Director or Golf Operations

My name is Sean Collins and I would liketo introduce myself as the new Director ofGolf Operations at The Dunes Golf &Winter Club. I just moved out to GrandePrairie a little over 2 weeks ago fromOntario, so I'm still finding my way aroundthe city.

For a little background on myself, Icompleted my 3 year BusinessAdministration diploma at MohawkCollege in 2009, then moved on tocomplete my 4 year bachelor of businessdegree in Golf Management at GeorgianCollege in 2012. I’ve worked at some ofthe top golf courses in the world, as Istarted off working in the groundsdepartment at Hamilton Golf and Country, moved to Liberty National in New Jerseywhich was host to the PGA Tour’s Barclays

event, then went on to work at BandonDunes Golf Resort in Oregon, currentlyGolf Digest’s number one rated golf resortin North America. After completing mydegree, I moved and spent the last 2 yearsat the Fairmont Banff Springs golf coursehere in Alberta.

I am very happy to be back in Alberta andexcited about the opportunity at TheDunes. As we’re starting to ramp up andget merchandise ready for the 2015season, I’ll be at the course quite a bit overthe next month, and I look forward tomeeting members and guests in thecoming season.

Turf Management

Greetings to everyone! Do I dare sayspring has sprung? I sure hope so. I amlooking forward to the long days, thegreenery and the smell of fresh cut grass. Ihope everyone had a wonderful winterand as always we look forward to seeingyou out on the links this season.

I would first like to welcome Andrea Pyperand Sean Collins to the managementteam. We look forward to working withyou continuing to make The Dunes thetop golf destination in northern Alberta. Ialso want to welcome back DavidOuellette (Assistant Superintendent) andMyles Mcallister (Equipment Technician)who continually work hard to provide thebest conditions possible. To all the Turfteam and all staff new and returning wewelcome you as well.

So many different tasks and maintenancepractices are performed during a golfseason we are often asked why we may bedoing certain things. Questions to do withgreen speeds, pest management, projectsand much more are common. In case youmay be wondering, I don’t control theweather, sorry! All of these maintenancepractices have to take place in a shortseason while the course is open. I thoughtI would try to touch on some of the itemsin my newsletters. Today’s topic isaeration: What, why and do you have todo that now! Well, aeration is an integralpart of a sound golf course maintenanceprogram. There are different types such ascore aeration, solid tine, spiking, deep and

shallow. All provide benefit and dodifferent things. Aeration in generalprovides a high oxygen environment forthe root system, improves watermovement in the soil, access to nutrients, removes thatch, reduces compaction, reduces disease/pests and provides betterturf health thus improving the playingsurface. We work really hard to minimizethe impact to the golfer and we reallyappreciate all the support. Your homelawn can benefit greatly from regularaeration. A little tip; do it in the fall, thenyou are ahead of the game in the spring.

Doesn’t cut in to your golfing time! I hopethis helps and let me know if you needinformation on anything else we do, Iwould be glad to chat.

Our focus this season is to continue toprovide the best conditions possible andto continue to improve the golf course. Our goal as always is to find more efficientways to do things and improve the coursein an environmentally friendly manner. Please help us out by encouraging othersto repair ball marks, fill divots and to usegolf cars in a manner that minimizes theimpact on the course. If you see thingsthat need to be brought to our attention, please let us know. If you have anyquestions or concerns, you can ask for meor send me an email [email protected]. Have a great golfseason!

Administration

It’s an exciting time of year! With theupcoming golf season steadilyapproaching, many exciting changes aretaking place. Leanne Venhola haswelcomed a beautiful baby girl, so EricCorcoran will be welcomed into TheDunes Family as our new AdministrationAssistant for the 2015 golf season.

I also just had the privilege of recentlyvisiting the Augusta National golf coursewhere The Masters is held. All we wereable to see was Magnolia Lane but it wasexciting to witness this level ofshowmanship first hand. This has meinspired for the 2015 season. Hope to seeyou on the course.
