The Columbia Notebookbegan with asimple premise: When an extraordinarybusiness or service is identified in one of ourown lives, its a tremendous service to othersto pass on a referral so that they can avoid

using unknown vendors/suppliers or firmswho may have little or nothing on the line.

The Columbia Notebookis our vehicle for referrals; inevery case, one of our staff is familiar with and has usedthe local firms in the various categories with satisfactoryresults, else they would not have been approached to befeatured in our guide.

It seems then and especially now, ten years later and ina much-changed economic environment as thoughliving up to ones established and proven reputation canensure a better purchasing outcome for consumers. It hasproven true over and over again, especially when we hearfrom readers about how much they appreciate havingconfidence in the companies and services within ourpages, even before they pick up the phone or go online tocontact them.

As weve built our reputation and worked hard to identifyand promote the undeniable excellence of our advertisers,we have found ourselves returning to a second premisethat strikes a true chord with our original foundation:

Columbia has the resources, the initiative, the people, theservices, the products and certainly the prices that make ushighly competitive in almost every market.

This is huge. We can, without a doubt, place our faith in thecomparable value of goods and services found right herein Columbia, which is a critical component in recoveringeconomic ground lost during the past several years.

Shopping local is more than a movement. Its a tangibleway we can support neighbors, friends and valuedassociates who make our lives better. When we shoplocal, we invest in the value of our community.

Columbia. We shop where we live. Come and shop with us!

Nail Polish ColorTrends for 2012This seasons most fabulous nail polishcolors have dbuted! Here, nail professionalsshare their top polish picks for the shades that aregoing to be everywhere this spring and summer.Youre not going to be able to resist stocking upon these cool colors!

PISTACHIO 2012 is all about the colorgreen, says Essie founder Essie Weingarten.Theres something really special about it, so youregoing to see a lot of it. Unlike last season, wherewe saw tons of hunter hues, springs iteration ispretty pistachio. Look for polishes that havecreamy undertones and lots of opacity you

want the color to really stand out on your nails.

TANGERINE Blame Pantone and 2012scolor of the season, Tangerine Tango, for all thebright orange nails youre going to be seeing thisyear. Offbeat orange and retro mod brights

straight out of the swinging 60s [will be big for2012], says CND founder Jan Arnold. Orange willbe a big color for next year and bright corals(orange with red pigment) will also be popular.

GLITTERY MIX Glitter gets an updatefor spring with new shapes, colors and sizes ofsparkles. The glitter craze is continuing, but willbe transforming into new variations the latestversions are 3-D holographics, but shiny shimmersstill continue to rule, says celebrity manicuristDeborah Lippmann.

MODERN NEON Ditch your high-lighter hues and try a new kind of bright. This isntold-school, 80s neon, says Butter London creativedirector Nonie Creme. Its a grown-up, moderninterpretation; the result of a neon mixed withpure white pigment to create a beautiful, pulled-back look. This is an evolution of neon stillbright and in the same color family, but moresophisticated and subdued. >

FOUNDATION NAILSMannequin nails make their return this spring, butthis time around, the focus is on matching your skintone, not making your nails look like a Barbie dolls.Beige is the new sheer pink and its popularity isrising, says Lippmann. Ive been doing nude nailsseason after season because it gives the illusion of

skin continuing and really lengthens your finger it feels modern. Were shifting to warmer,foundation-inspired hues because who doesntlove the idea of never-ending skin? Skin hasbecome so important to our culture were alwaysafter that glowing, dewy, gorgeous effect.Source: www.refinery29.com

agraffeThe wire that holds the cork

    in a champagne bottle.diningdiningspring/summer 2012

How to Open ChampagneImpress your friends by opening Champagne with

this method to reduce the risk of mishap. After all, wouldnt you rather drink the Champagne than haveit gush onto the floor?

Chill the bottle for about three hours in therefrigerator or half an hour in a bucket of ice water.

Wrap a towel or cloth around the bottle, to guardagainst the unlikely event of breakage.

    Remove the foil wrap.

Place one hand firmly on the neck of the bottle,

with your thumb maintaining pressure on themetal capsule against the cork.

Twist the wire ring six half-turns counter-clockwise.

Remove the agraffe (the wire cage!) and shift yourthumb to maintain pressure on the cork (in casebottle pressure pops the cork prematurely).

Tilt the bottle at a 45 angle, facing away from you.

Hold the cork firmly and slowly twist the bottle.(Yes, this is the correct technique: turn the bottle,

not the cork.)As you feel the cork begin to loosen and rise, holdit with back pressure from your hand. Allow thecork to slowly ease out of the bottle. If donecorrectly, you will hear a gentle sigh ratherthan a pop.

Pour a small amount ineach glass.

As the initial moussesubsides, pour more

    Champagne intoeach glass.

    Enjoy!

How to WearSprings Hottest ColorSince PantoneTM declaredTangerine TangoTHE color of 2012, youll need these tips forwearing orange this spring and summer.

Surprisingly, orange is a very flattering colorsince it instantly adds a natural glow to yourskin tone. But if youre not used to wearingorange, it can seem a little tricky. Heres how tomake sure youre wearing the right hues at theright time.

If you decide to wear orange near your face,

such as a top, a hat or accessories, pick vibrantshades ofmango for olive-to-dark skin tone. Ifyoure a little paler, opt for more muted orangeshades such as a sunset color. When trying ongarments at the store, just hold up the itemnear your face; if it makes your eyes pop andbrightens up your face, youve got a winner. Butif it makes you look pale ordrab, put it back!

If you want to sport acrazy neon orangebut youre afraid itwill look badagainst yourskin tone, go forsomething thatis worn awayfrom the face suchas a belt, skirt or a pairof shoes.

    And finally, when

youre wearing astatement color suchas orange, you shouldstand out, not yourclothing. Wear itconfidently and letyourself shine.

After many years in retail as a manager andbuyer (Happy Dashery, Parasol Boutique,Bonwit Teller, etc.), I decided I wanted toopen a shop that would offer the same cus-tomer service as a boutique, but I did notwant to own my inventory.

Information about consignment shops wasscarce, which meant learning as I worked tobuild my dream.

On May 1, 1992, with the help of my hus-band and parents, I opened Revente on thefoundation of a tiny investment and a lot ofhard work. This year, Revente is celebratingtheir 20th anniversary! Weve grown from asmall shop in 5 Points to a larger space, adding Sid and Nancy five years ago, and

opening Reventes Last Call, our charityshop, in 2009.

Each shop is different, yet they share thesame goal: provide the best in pre-ownedclothing and accessories at a fair price andoffer a way for local people to recycle their

clothing. You can find great new piecesevery day with the labels you love to wear, from business to evening wear to casualdresses and outfits, sizes 0 to 26.

Revente has been named Columbias #1consignment shop year after year by every

major publication in Columbia; Sid andNancy is now known as Columbias BestAlternative Clothing store; and RLC hasdonated more than $35,000 to TheWomens Shelter since opening.

Please visit our stores to discover uniqueand trendy items of clothing, shoes, jewelry, handbags, eyewear and other accessories,or check us out online to learn more abouthow you can recycle your gently worn

Is it Right for Your Business?

The best way to guarantee an income is bygetting disability coverage. Once someonecannot work due to disability, there are notmany options to maintain their currentstandard of living or to pay for necessarymedical expenses due to that disability. Many people put off purchasing disabilitycoverage because they feel it will not hap-pen to them, at least not right away. But ifit does suddenly happen, cutting off an

income stream can be devastating. Somepeople think that Government Disabilitycan provide enough income, if one is cov-ered, but in reality Government Disabilitycovers a very minimal amount.

    Why Get Group Disability?

The last thing an employer wants is anemployee hanging on to their job by athread just to keep their income stream

going. Firing an employee is not always aneasy answer and can come with legal con-sequences. Group Disability can help easea very painful situation, and is also goodmanagement because it reduces anypotential disruption and risks that canaffect the success of a business. Lastly, as agreat group benefit to offer an employee,it also helps keep the best employees loyalto the business as it can be seen as moreimportant than a higher salary offered by acompetitor.

The Group UnderwritingAdvantageGroup disability underwriting, dependingon the size of a group, can either be morelenient or, for larger groups, medicalunderwriting may be waived. Also, in mostcases pre-existing conditions are notexcluded under a group policy. A grouppolicy may be cancelled as a group, whileindividual policies may not be cancelled. Ifa policy is cancelled, there may or may not

be replacement options. Group policiesalso tend to have more favorable pricingthan individual policies. Group policy ben-efits are taxed, however, while individualpolicies benefits are not taxed. You maywant to consult with your CPA, though, asthere may be options to structure a grouppolicy so that the group benefits are nottaxable. Lastly, group policies may not haveas rich benefits as individual policies.

    Conclusion

Group Disability coverage is a manage-ment investment decision and is anexcellent choice for businesses that wantto minimize risk as well as round out theirbenefits packages to keep and attract thebest employees. In most cases, this costs afraction of the cost of health insurance andmay be the best supplemental benefit abusiness can offer. Since each business sit-

uation is different, its best to discuss withyour insurance professional the availableoptions in existence for your business.

The potential for change is one of the fewconstants in life. Whether your circum-stances evolve unexpectedly or as the resultof careful planning, you may have to alteryour investment strategy. The following aretransitional events that may present oppor-tunities or savings obstacles:

Changing jobs If you change jobs or getpromoted and receive a salary increase, con-sider investing at least some of the

difference for your long-term goals. Youwont miss the money if you invest it rightfrom the start.

Tying the knot The decision to marry orremarry could raise a variety of questionsabout your portfolio and financial plans. Willyour combined assets provide enoughincome for two retirements? Will the needfor just one primary residence free upincome? If so, you may be able to increase

your investments. Divorce also raises finan-cial questions. For example, will you need toinvest more aggressively to meet the cost ofretirement on your own?

Adding a family member The additionof a newborn to your family could signal theneed to start planning for someone elsesfuture. Aside from the usual expenses ofrearing a child, theres the cost of an educa-tion to consider.

Emptying the nest Many parents withgrown children often enjoy a parentalbonus after their children leave home. Ifyou anticipate a parental bonus, considerinvesting at least part of it for your retire-ment needs.

Caring for aging relatives The need tosupport aging family members, possibly atthe same time youre caring for children of

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)affects both men and women. IBScauses discomfort, bloating, abdominal pain and changes inbowel habits. People with IBS eitherhave diarrhea or constipation or acombination of both, and havethree or more bowel movements a

day. These symptoms vary from dayto day, and some are worse thanothers.

When physicians diagnose apatient with IBS, they look at all ofthe typical symptoms of IBS alongwith weight loss, family history andother features.

Unfortunately, there is no cure forIBS. People with IBS rely on medica-tions such as antidiarrheals forrelief. They monitor their fiberintake as well as reduce their intakeof raw foods. Although some of thedaily activities of an IBS sufferer getinterrupted, most learn how tocope with their symptoms.

To restore our skin to a healthy state, bothmen and women can call on an expert in

maintaining skin health and beauty: theesthetician, a trained professional in allaspects of proper skincare. The most effec-tive treatment in an estheticians skill settoward healthy skin is the facial.

A facial is recommended for most adultsabout once a month, because our naturalrate of cell turnover slows down after ourearly twenties and old cells no longer sloughoff naturally every 28 days. Our formerlyluminous skin begins to look dull, wrinklesmay become more defined and those oldcells can clog pores, leading to adult acne.

So what is a facial, exactly? A good facialexperience includes several basic steps. First, the esthetician should conduct a thoroughanalysis of your skin. This may include visualinspection under a magnifying lamp, as wellas questions regarding your current skincarehabits, and determining your skins naturalsensitivity and needs. Secondly, s/he will

cleanse your skin using an appropriatecleanser for your skin type, followed by anapplication of toner, which restores the nat-ural pH-balance of your skin after cleansing.

Typically, an exfoliant will follow the toner. The purpose of the exfoliant is to manuallyor chemically remove the excess dead skincells from the surface of the skin to revealthe healthy layer below. Your esthetician willdecide which type of exfoliant to use based

on your skin type and sensitivity. Commonlyused exfoliants include scrubs and enzymepeels.

Once the skin has been exfoliated, you willreceive a facial massage to loosen any hard-ened oil trapped in the pores. The massagealso further stimulates blood and lymphflow to carry nutrients to the skin and carrywastes away from the skin. Next, you mayexpect a steam treatment with either steamtowels wrapped around the face or the useof a steamer. The moist heat will help openyour pores, which then allows the estheti-cian to more easily extract any hardened oilfrom your skin, reducing existing blemishes.Following the extractions, s/he will cleanse

any debris from the skin and proceed to themask.

The mask is an excellent way to introducebeneficial ingredients into the skin. The

mask may have several benefits, includinganti-aging, toning and tightening, andhydration. A treatment serum may beapplied under the mask to provide addition-al benefits. The serum and mask will beallowed to remain on the skin for 5 to 10minutes before removal.

The final steps of your facial are moisturizingand protecting your freshly cleansed skin. The proper moisturizer will serve to rebal-

ance the water and oil in your skin. If you areprone to dry skin, your moisturizer may beoil-based; if your skin tends to be oily, youmay need a water-based hydrator. Once themoisturizer has absorbed into your skin, abroad-spectrum sunscreen should beapplied to protect your fresh, healthy facefrom the sun. Your esthetician will then rec-ommend the proper products to maintainand continue your skincare at home.

How can we help our skin maintain itshealthiest appearance? Todays environmentis harsh on our skin external and internalaggressors damage it, UV rays cause thebreakdown of healing functions within it,and common pollutants and chemical toxinscan cause premature aging. In addition, many of us do not drink enough water tomaintain a proper moisture barrier in theskin, and unhealthy food choices candeprive our skin of much-needed nutrients.

A facial once a month, sunscreen and top-ping up your water bottle can help youreplenish the glow.

Now youre ready to face the world!

    A facial once a month,sunscreen and topping

up your water bottlecan help you replenishthe glow.

At the beginning of the year, I decided thatthis was my year to truly commit to losingweight.

So I made a goal and a decision to do this, right?!

And now we are a few months into theyear and I am still ready to commit. I went ona diet for 10 days, then allowed myself to bedistracted. What are distractions? Those arethe things that you see (or eat) when youlose focus! So now I am back to my favoritepart of the HCG diet, which is the first twodays. The reason that I love the first two daysis because a person is allowed to eat what-ever they want within reason duringthis time period. You simply have to takeHCG and drink plenty of water. I strongly

suggest eating plenty of the things that, when you are on the diet for the next 28days, you will not be able to eat.

There was a lot of controversy over the HCGdiet, but fortunately the homeopathic imita-tors have been removed from the market. At

Midlands Medical Wellness Center, LLC, we

have been offering the HCG diet using theoral form for almost five years and manypatients have been successful. While we donot guarantee results, our patients average aloss of 20 to 25 pounds during the firstmonth. HCG, as it relates to weight loss, helpsto reshape the bodys metabolism whichenables you to more quickly get weight off.Although this diet is not for everyone, if youare ready to be seriously focused on losingweight then you should definitely consider

this as a solution for you or someone youcare about.

Since 1986, J.D. Power and Associates hasconducted a study to establish benchmark

assessments of new vehicle quality after 90days of ownership, and recently releasedtheir latest findings in the annual report,2011 U.S. Initial Quality StudySM (IQS). Thestudy has proven to be an excellent predic-tor of long-term vehicle dependability, which is the single most important reasonnew vehicle buyers choose a specific vehi-cle. More than simply a survey of models ofvehicles, the quality within the manufactur-ing plants is also judged and recognized

accordingly. In 2011, Lexus received four model awardsand three manufacturing quality awards, atestimony to the ongoing insistence ofLexus to meet the highest standards possi-ble on behalf of vehicle owners.

Of the more than 200 models included inthe 2011 study, four Lexus models rankedamong the industry top 10 in initial quality, leading all major industry nameplates over-

all in this years IQS.As you might expect, the LS is the highest-performing model in the study and the ES isthe second-highest-performing model.Even more outstanding an accolade to thequality that a Lexus vehicle offers its owneris the persistent consistency behind theawards:

Lexus LSHighest-Ranked Large Premium Car in

Initial Quality, Four Years in a RowLexus GSHighest-Ranked Midsize Premium Car inInitial Quality, Three Years in a Row

Lexus GXHighest-Ranked Midsize PremiumCrossover/SUV in Initial Quality, ThreeYears in a Row

In addition, the Lexus ES was namedHighest Ranked Entry Premium Car inInitial Quality.Importantly, in 12 of the past 14 years, themodel of vehicle with the highest initialquality industry-wide has been a Lexus, with

LS standing out as the highest-performingmodel of all vehicles in nine of the past 14years.

Lexus was one of only two automakers toreceive a Platinum Plant Quality Award, which recognizes the highest manufactur-ing quality among facilities that producevehicles for the U.S. market. This award is noless prestigious because it was won in a tie,as the co-winner was also a Lexus manufac-turing facility, providing themselves withsteep competition that few others begin tomatch.

Seventy-three thousand new vehicle own-ers or lessees answered the 228-questionsurvey, which is designed to help automak-ers in general drive continuous productimprovement. Unfortunately, Lexus vehiclescant offer them any insight except by theexample they set.

When you next visit Jim Hudson Lexus, wedbe glad to share a copy of the report withyou to help you make a more informed pur-

For years, my son had a dream: he wanted togo to a specific summer camp. The cost of thecamp itself was daunting; more than that, he

needed to be outfitted for the climate, adventure and skills he would be exploring.

Last summer, I discovered the way to fit hisdream into these worrisome economictimes!

I called a good friend whose son had gone toa similar camp. She suggested that I visit theoutdoor consignment store, Get Your GearOn. They have great deals on lightly usedcamping equipment for half the price of

other stores!Get Your Gear On was easy to locate; I founda nice backpack, tent, sleeping pad and cook-ing equipment plus Patagonia, North Faceand Columbia apparel. They had a bit ofeverything from kayaks and rock climbingto bikes and water skis all at super prices.

The shop owners are supportive and helpful. Their inventory of consignment items is

always changing, but they order anythingneeded and work with prices on new gear. Ithought, Wow! This kind of personal service

is unheard of these days. Then I saw the list ofRiver Tours they offer!

With many choices for different styles oftrips, I purchased an affordable Guided RiverTour for me and the friend who suggestedGYGO. A month later, while my son wasenjoying summer camp, my friend and I hada beautiful Ladies Day on the River.

Our guide was entertaining, professional andcareful to insure our safety on a fabulous

summer afternoon. Weve returned to GYGOoften for trips with family and out-of-townguests; theyre always glad to see me, outfitour next excursion and share whats new inthe shop.

Im hopeful my husband gets this hint: Idreally like him to take me on a Get Your GearOn Full-Moon Paddle Trip this summer!
