What Women Want…TheHeart of the Matter

At the end of the day, we believethat what women truly want is tohave made a difference, to havemattered in the lives of others.And so we take this opportuni-ty to honor a woman whomattered beyond measure tous, our mother, who will con-tinue to influence us andour family for generationsto come.

From the moment of birth,when a woman looks intothe eyes of her newbornand says, “You are beautiful.I love you unconditionally,”there can be no doubting amother’s bond with herchild. Our mother, whopassed away July 22, 2012, atthe age of 96, exemplified thestrength and power of awoman’s determinationto matter in the mostpositive ways, nurturingthat bond to her finaldays.

Mom led by example. Bekind; be charitable; takecare of your family; liveeach day as if it wereyour first (or last). Don’tlet material things havetoo much merit; the people in your life should mattermore. Live life to the fullest.

We were told that hearing is one of the last senses oneloses. At the end, surrounded by her family, we all got totell her how much we love her and that her love can neverbe replaced.

She is dearly missed by her five children, 10 grandchildren,eight great-grandchildren and the many, many lives shetouched. As a great and inspiring love in our lives, we knowshe is truly an angel now, as she prepared so well for therole. Spread your wings and fly, mama. You will always mat-ter to us.

In the heart of Columbia’s historic down-town, a hidden nook of romance has beenrestored after 30 years, returning a traditionof very special occasions to a much-lovedrestaurant.

Since 1940, Villa Tronco has provided mem-orable meals in a 19th-century firehousethat has now been lovingly renovated toeven better reflect its past. New exteriorfaçades reflect the status of both historiclandmark buildings that house the restau-rant, thanks to a grant from the City ofColumbia. Many homeowners learn the hard way that theirhomeowners' insurance doesn't cover propertydamage caused by floods. If you live in a potential-ly affected area — which could include everythingfrom a home on the coast that sees frequentfloods to one downhill from a stream that hasn'tflooded in years — you probably should buy aseparate flood insurance policy to cover yourhome and contents. Here in the South CarolinaMidlands we have recently seen heavy rains thathave caused floods by water flowing from pavedparking lots and roads. The Five Points Area is agood example.

You can purchase flood insurance from your bro-ker or agent through the National Flood InsuranceProgram (NFIP), which is managed by the FederalEmergency Management Agency (FEMA). Floodinsurance is available to any homeowner who livesin one of the many NFIP Communities which haveagreed to pass and enforce certain storm waterand flood plain management laws. Fortunatelymost, if not all of Columbia, is a NFIP Community.

A flood insurance policy through the NFIP can pro-vide maximum coverage of $250,000 for propertyand $100,000 for contents. (Property and contentscoverage must be purchased separately, eventhough they may form part of the same policy.) Ifyou want additional coverage, you can purchaseexcess flood insurance from private insurers. Theaverage flood insurance policy costs less than$570 per year, according to the NFIP.

If you buy a home in a designated high-risk floodzone and get a mortgage loan from a federally reg-ulated or insured lender, your lender must requirethat you purchase flood insurance.

If you live in a zone that's been designated moder-ate- or low-risk, you don't need to buy floodinsurance for your lender's sake -- but you maywant to do so anyway, especially if your own obser-vations indicate that the official designation onyour area are out-of-date (a common problem).According to FEMA, almost 25% of all flood insur-ance claims come from areas withlow-to-moderate flood risk. The good news is thatyou'll qualify for a preferred-risk policy. The premi-ums for this type of policy start at only $129 peryear (for both property and contents).

A transaction in which the proceeds from thesale of one security is simultaneously reinvest-ed into another is sometimes referred to as aswap. Such transactions are designed to poten-tially provide benefits to the investor in termsof income, credit quality, maturity target or callfeature, diversification and tax savings. Keep inmind that diversification does not guarantee aprofit or protect against a loss in a decliningfinancial market.

Realizing Gains and LossesMany individuals have unrealized capital gainsand capital losses in their investment portfolios,which may be unlocked through a tax swaptransaction. Capital losses can be used to offsetcapital gains on a dollar-for-dollar basis. For taxreporting purposes, you must first net short-term gains against short-term losses (securitiesheld for one year or less), and long-term gainsagainst long-term losses (securities held formore than a year). Any remaining short- andlong-term gains and losses can be nettedagainst each other. If net capital losses stillremain, up to $3,000 may be used to offset ordi-nary income. Any unused capital losses arecarried forward indefinitely.For example, if you sell an equity position for aprofit, you could offset the resulting capital gainby selling a fixed income holding for a capitalloss, and use the proceeds to buy a new bondwith a higher coupon. Such a swap may converta paper loss from the bond into a real tax savingon the equity position.

Avoiding the “Wash Sale Rule”The Internal Revenue Service requires a taxpay-er to defer any tax loss generated from the saleand purchase of substantially identical securi-ties if the transactions occur within 30 days ofeach other (regardless of whether the sale isbefore or after the purchase). This is commonlyreferred to as a wash sale. Generally, securitiesare not considered identical when they havedifferent issuers, or, for fixed income securities,where there are substantial differences in eithermaturity date or coupon rate. You should con-sult your tax advisor before making any swapdecision and to determine whether a sale willbe considered a wash sale.

Investment ConsiderationsAs with all investments, equity and fixedincome securities have inherent risks which you

should consider before investing. These includeequity market risk, interest rate risk, credit risk,reinvestment risk and call risk. In particular,should you sell your security in the secondarymarket, the price you receive may be more orless than your original purchase price or matu-rity value. In addition, any swap should alwaysbe considered in relation to your financialobjectives and goals, and you should considerany transaction costs involved.

Investment Goals and ObjectivesTax swapping can be an important tool in man-aging your investment portfolio. As thefinancial markets and your financial goals andcircumstances change, the investments in yourportfolio should be adjusted accordingly. Taxswaps are one way you can effect these adjust-ments. Many of us go through the day-to-day courseof life experiencing the ups and downs offatigue, sleep problems, mood irritability, mus-cle loss, joint aches, low libido and, of course,hot flashes. For many individuals these prob-lems may be hormone related. Beinghormonally balanced, however, can allow anindividual to maintain an active, healthylifestyle.

Bio-identical hormone replacement treat-ment (BHRT) has been in existence since the1930s and has gained popularity, given thecontroversies of commercial hormonereplacement therapy and its serious sideeffects. BHRT is plant-derived from naturalsources and chemically changed in a laborato-ry until biologically equivalent to what yourbody would produce. It is customized for eachindividual based on lab levels of hormones.

Imagine a machine that can take real-time, 3-D,HD images of the inside of your body duringsurgery. Doctors can see exactly what’s goingon inside of you and make sure every step iscorrect throughout the surgical procedure. Youprobably wouldn’t want to have surgery with-out it. And now — you don’t have to.

Lexington Medical Center is the first hospital inthe Midlands with the technologicallyadvanced O-Arm, a new imaging system forspinal surgery.

The O-Arm is a machine placed around apatient on the operating table. Before surgery,doctors use the O-Arm to capture images ofthe patient that help them develop a precisesurgical guide. During surgery, the O-Armimages allow neurosurgeons to confirm prop-er placement of instrumentation. Afterimplants are placed, neurosurgeons use the O-Arm again to confirm correct placement ofinstruments in the spine and address anythingfurther that needs to be done. Images are dis-played on a large, digital flat screen at a viewstation next to the operating table.

Before O-Arm technology, patients would havean MRI or CT scan before surgery and doctorswould use 1- or 2-dimensional images to guidethem. They would place instruments andimplants by using their best educated guessbased on standard anatomy. But in back sur-gery, doctors are working through a smallopening and it can be difficult to know whereyou are in the spine. Margins of error are mil-limeters — and implants must be placed witha great deal of accuracy.

Manufactured by Medtronic, the O-Armimproves safety for surgeons and staff mem-bers, lowers the chance of revision surgeriesand can enhance patient outcomes. Spinalproblems can be chronic and debilitating. TheO-Arm gives patients a great opportunity forexcellent results.
