How fast time goes by.It seems like we just put out ourSpring/Summer edition and our Fall/Winteredition is here. It reminds us that we need
to stop and take time for ourselves and theimportant things in life.
The first important thing that comes tomind is our health. We should never take our health for grant-ed. In the blink of an eye, our health can change, affectingeverything around us.
Make sure while you have your health that you do the thingsthat are important to you. Take that trip, write that book, vol-
unteer for a cause that reallymeans something to you, spendtime with your family and thepeople who have played a bigpart in your life, and always letthem know how much you careabout and love them.
When we fall or fail, we need topick ourselves up. Remember thepoem, The itsy-bitsy spider went up the water spout. Down came therain and washed the spider out.Out came the sun and dried up all the rain, and the itsy-bitsy spider
went up the spout again. For many of us, that was our first les-son in perseverance and it holds true today as a way to beatadversity and achieve success in any endeavor.
One thing our father told us when we were growing up wasthat in five minutes we will be 50, 60 and so on. How truethat is! So live for today, take nothing for granted and let thepeople in your life who mat-ter know how importantthey are to you.

Heat Worcestershire sauce and wine on medium heatuntil it begins to slightly boil. Reduce heat so as not tooverboil.
In separate pan, saut onions in olive oil until soft. Addtomatoes and cook on medium for five minutes.Season with salt and pepper.
Add sauted onions and tomatoes into Worcestershire-wine mixture and add honey, orange juice, lime juice,balsamic and cider vinegar. Return heat to high untilboil begins to increase. Stir continuously and cook forfive minutes.
Add sugar and stir to incorporate. Add remainingingredients and cook for ten minutes onmedium heat.
Thicken withsmall portion of corn starchslurry.
Enjoy with yourfavorite cut of meat.

A century ago, author Mark Twain wrote that thedifference between a taxidermist and a tax col-
lector is that the taxidermist only takes yourskin. Today, the IRS isnt any more popular. Whynot see if any of the following strategies couldallow you to keep more of what your invest-ments earn?
Look into tax-managed mutual funds. Portfo-lio managers of tax-managed funds can use anumber of strategies to help reduce the tax biteshareholders suffer. For example, they may striveto keep portfolio turnover low to help minimize
taxable gains, or they may actively use losses tooffset taxable gains.
Consider municipal bonds and bond funds.Because the interest on a municipal bond is usu-ally exempt from federal taxes, and sometimesstate and local taxes, it may actually produce abetter yield than a taxable bond with a compa-rable interest rate. The higher your income taxbracket, the more you may benefit from owningmunis.1
Contribute to tax-advantaged retirementvehicles. You can now contribute up to $5,000annually to an IRA plus an additional $1,000 peryear if youre over age 50 (for the 2010 tax year). Traditional IRAs offer tax deferral you pay notaxes on earnings until withdrawal and mayprovide tax deductions. Roth IRAs offer taxdeferral and qualified withdrawals are tax free,but no tax deductions. 2
Use gains and losses to your advantage.If you have an investment and hold it for at leastone year before selling, youll pay a maximumfederal tax of 15% on capital gains. The samerate applies for dividend income. 3 Keep it for lessthan one year and youll pay regular incometaxes up to 35%. Also keep in mind that if youintend to sell investments that have lost money,you can do so by December 31 and deduct up to$3,000 in investment losses from that years tax
return. Additional losses can be carried over andused to offset future capital gains.

Theres a simple way to keep summerannuals going over the winter and into nextspring. By taking cuttings from many of theplants you enjoyed through the spring andsummer, both in the garden and in contain-ers, you can keep the color and vibrancy aliveon your windowsill through the sometimesdreary and grey days of winter.
Before the first frost hits (usually by thesecond week of November here in theMidlands), look around to see which plantsyou have from which you can take cuttings.Coleus (Solenostemon scutellarioides) and
sweet potato vine (Ipomoea batatas) aretwo that you can stick in a vase and enjoytheir color inside all winter, as long as youchange out the water regularly. They willgrow roots, allowing you to transfer thecuttings back into soil come spring. Puttogether purple and chartreuse varieties of sweet potato vine with any of the colorfulvarieties of coleus the same combinationsyou used in the garden will look just as goodtogether in a vase!Other plants that thrive in water are ivy(Hedera helix), creeping wire vine (Muehlen-beckia axillaris) and Wandering Jew orspiderwort (Tradescantia albiflora).

Constipation is one of the most common gas-trointestinal complaints in the United States. Itis estimated that more than four million Amer-icans suffer from it each year. The problem is soprevalent that we spend $725 million on laxa-tives each year. The purpose of this article is todefine constipation, explain what can be doneto avoid it and what treatment options may beavailable to you.
In adults, not having a bowel movement everyday does not mean that you are abnormal. It is
normal to have as few as three bowel move-ments each week. On the other hand, it is alsonormal to have as many as three bowel move-ments in a day. Constipation is defined by theMayo Clinic as A symptom resulting in infre-quent bowel movements or difficult passageof stools.Constipation is not a disease but rather asymptom. The symptom of fewer than threebowel movements each week may indicatefunctional constipation, also known as Chron-ic Idiopathic Constipation. The medical termidiopathic means that the cause of this ail-ment is, as yet, unknown.
There are several factors that can cause consti-pation, which include: not enough fiber in thediet; lack of physical activity; medications; milk and milk products; irritable bowel syndrome(IBS); not going to the bathroom when your
body indicates that you need to; dehydration;stroke; and physical problems within thedigestive tract or problems with gastrointesti-nal function.
The American Dietetic Association recom-mends 20 to 35 grams of fiber per day.Unfortunately, the average American onlyconsumes approximately 14 grams. It isimportant to consume foods high in fiber or tosupplement your diet with fiber supplements.
Dehydration can be avoided by drinking fluidsthat do not increase dehydration. Water, non-caffeinated beverages and non-alcoholicbeverages are better beverage choices toavoid dehydration.
Physical activity is also important to assist inavoiding constipation and lack of activity isthe most common reason for constipation inolder adults.
There are many over-the-counter medica-tions. If over-the-counter remedies are noteffective, a physician can also prescribe med-ications to help. It is important to rememberthat an abrupt change in bowel habits (fre-quency, consistency, etc.) or rectal bleedingshould be reported to your doctor.

How does our skin maintain its healthiestappearance? In addition,many of us do not drink enough water tomaintain a proper moisture barrier in the skin,and unhealthy food choices can deprive ourskin of much-needed nutrients.
So what can we do to restore our skin to its
healthy state? Enter the expert on maintainingskin health and beauty: the esthetician, atrained professional in all aspects of properskincare. The most effective treatment in anestheticians skill set toward healthy skin is thefacial.
A facial is recommended for most adultsabout once a month, because our natural rateof cell turnover slows down after the early 20sand old cells no longer slough off naturallyevery 28 days. Our formerly luminous skinbegins to look dull, wrinkles may becomemore defined and those old cells can clogpores, leading to adult acne.
So what is a facial, exactly? A good facial expe-rience should include several basic steps. First,the esthetician should conduct a thoroughanalysis of your skin. This may include visualinspection under a magnifying lamp, as well as

Once the skin has been exfoliated, you willreceive a facial massage to loosen any hard-ened oil trapped in the pores. The massagealso further stimulates blood and lymph flow
to carry nutrients to the skin and carry wastesaway from the skin. Next, you may expect asteam treatment with either steam towelswrapped around the face or the use of asteamer. The moist heat will help open yourpores, which then allows the esthetician tomore easily extract any hardened oil fromyour skin, reducing existing blemishes. Follow-ing the extractions, s/he will cleanse anydebris from the skin and proceed to the mask.
The mask is an excellent way to introduce ben-eficial ingredients into the skin. The mask mayhave several benefits, including anti-aging,toning and tightening, and hydration. A treat-ment serum may be applied under the mask to provide additional benefits. The serum andmask will be allowed to remain on the skin for5 to 10 minutes, then will be removed.
The final steps of your facial are moisturizing
and protecting your freshly cleansed skin. Theproper moisturizer will serve to rebalance thewater and oil in your skin. If you are prone todry skin, your moisturizer may be oil-based; if your skin tends to be more oily, you may needa water-based hydrator. Once the moisturizerhas absorbed into your skin, a broad-spectrumsunscreen should be applied to protect yourfresh, healthy face from the sun. Your estheti-cian will then recommend the proper
products to maintain and continue your skin-care at home.

According to Wikipedia, using adisposable paper filter when brewingcoffee removes oily components calledditerpenes, organic compounds whichappear to increase the risk of coronaryheart disease. Basket or cone-shaped, thefilters come in both bleached or un-bleached form. Youll find that filters, likelyalready in your kitchen cabinet, are anextremely useful kitchen gadget foroh-so-many reasons!1. Cover bowls or dishes when cooking in the
microwave.2. Clean windows, mirrors and chrome
coffee filters are lint-free so theyll leavewindows sparkling.
3. Protect your good china by separating yourdishes with a coffee filter between each.
4. Filter broken cork from wine. If you break the cork when opening a wine bottle, filterthe wine through a coffee filter.
5. Protect a cast-iron skillet. Place a coffeefilter in the skillet to absorb moisture andprevent rust.
6. Recycle frying oil. After frying, strain oilthrough a sieve lined with a coffee filter.
7. Prevent a popsicle from dripping. Poke oneor two holes as needed in a coffee filter.
8. Put a few in a plate and put your friedbacon, French fries, chicken fingers, etc. onthem. It soaks out much of the grease.
9. Hold tacos. Coffee filters make convenientwrappers for messy foods.
10. Use them to strainsoup stock and to tie freshherbs in to put in soups and stews.
11. Use them as a spoon rest while cookingand clean up small counter spills.
12. Weigh chopped foods. Place choppedingredients in a coffee filter on akitchen scale.

Feline house-soilingis the most common
complaint among catowners in the U.S. It can
lead to banishment out-doors, relinquishment and
euthanasia.A common misconception is that the
perpetrator is acting out of spite orvengeance. In fact, this is a completely
normal and common form of com-munication in cats. It is adaptivebehavior in response to an aver-sion or stress. For example, a newbaby or pet, company in the house
or a change in the owners schedulecan lead to stress or anxiety in the cat. The catmay react by soiling inappropriately. This isnot vindictive behavior, but a reaction tohousehold circumstances. An inferior litterproduct, a dirty litter box, a hood over the lit-ter box are all common causes of litter boxaversion and inappropriate urination. Again,this is not spiteful behavior; it is the result of the cat reacting and attempting to cope byfinding a more preferred place to eliminate. There are two basic causes of inappropriateelimination: medical and behavioral. Medicalcauses include urinary tract infection, FLUTD(feline lower urinary tract disease), constipa-tion, diarrhea, arthritis or other illness thatwould make access to the litter box difficult,and diseases that cause increased thirst andurination.Behavioral causes can be broken down intotwo categories; marking and inappropriatetoileting. Marking refers to inappropriate uri-nation/defecation with the intent of communicating. Inappropriate toileting refersto inappropriate urination/defecation withthe intent only to empty bladder or bowels,typically due to an aversion to the litter box. There are several diagnostic criteria to discern
between the two. Marking often involves uri-nating on vertical surfaces while stilldefecating in the box. The target has no sub-strate pattern (it is not always on a wool rug oralways in a potted plant) and appears to berandom, but to the cat the location has nosocial significance. Inappropriate toileting
often occurs on a horizontal surface, the catalso defecates inappropriately and the targettends to have a substrate pattern.
Treatments:Markingn Spay or neuter if not already done; 90% of male cats show a significant decrease in mark-ing once neutered.n Reduce stress block the view of cats out-side, keep other cats away from thehome/yard, separate from other cats in thehouse if there is tension between them.n Have multiple feeding areas and multiplelitter boxes in different locations so that no catis prevented access to these resources.n Provide many perch areas at differentheights throughout the house.n Schedule enrichment time with thestressed cat. Cats prefer short spurts of inter-action and tire of play quickly. They have shortattention spans. It is recommended that youplay for 34 minutes with one toy, then pro-vide a 35 minute break followed by play witha different toy or different type of interaction. Try SlimCat or Funkitty toys.n Use Feliway feline pheromone diffusers. Becertain to have an adequate number of dif-fusers and place them in areas where theculprit spends time.n When needed, anti-anxiety drugs such asProzac and Elavil can be prescribed.Inappropriate Toileting
Examine the litter box situation and find solu-tions the cat can accept. Try the following:n Increase the number of boxes (rule of thumb: 1 box for each cat in the house + 1).n Change from a scented to a non-scentedlitter.n Choose fish or cedar scents over floral or citrus.n Change from clumping litter to non-clump-ing or vice versa.n
Cats prefer litter with carbon as the odor-control additive, such as FreshStep.n Get a larger box.n Scoop daily.n Move the box to a more accessible locationor spread the boxes out throughout thehouse.
