Women’s Wants Trump Wishing and Hoping

We are quickly losing the transitional “greatest generation” of women who smoothed the way into women having a voice, a presence of their own.

That wonderful generation, now in their 70s, 80s and 90s, who lost husbands and sons in wars with nowhere to turn, who were taught that June Cleaver was the icon for wife and mother, who buried their dreams, their potential, even as they fulfilled their expected roles as homemaker, companion and caretaker, is slowly diminishing in numbers as the women

of today replace dreaming with doing, with the full support of those who came before.

It hasn’t been an easy transition. Some of us remember not having the choice to take “auto shop” or “woodworking,” forced into “home economics” whether we liked it or not. And coming from homes where the male role encompassed financial matters, insurance purchases and every other major decision, our mothers didn’t always

have the skills to teach us how to balance a checkbook or comparison shop for important services such as appliance repairs. In matters of power tools and yardwork, few women were lucky enough to be taken under the wing of someone who could teach them the language and show them the ropes.

So the next generation, those of us in our 50s and 60s, learned the hard way, through trial and error, how to deal with contractors and pump our own gas and negotiate a better APR when purchasing a car from a dealer who always first approached and greeted any male in the shopping party.

Look at us now. When we consider what it is that women want so they can be successful today, we realize that women want to be informed so they can make sound and solid decisions based on facts. Women want to have the knowledge they need so they can control the outcome of a project, a life-changing decision or even a career goal ambition, not leaving anything to chance because we’re not about to settle for anything less than what we have earned. We research, we question, we read and we’ve learned to dig a little deeper below the surface because that greatest generation taught us that, yes, our time, our work and even our dreams ARE valuable, and we are entitled to the respect we have earned in busy lives that now cover many, many roles during a day.

And so the upcoming generation, in their 20s, 30s and 40s, comes into its own, demanding information so they can accomplish whatever they set out to do. They’re ready to take on the world, to shatter stereotypes, to write new tales of what the next “great generation” can accomplish — with nothing to hold them back.

At The Columbia Notebook, we salute every single one of these women, and hope the publication you’re holding makes it easier for you to be efficient, effective and just plain “great” in the course of your life.

We love to see great things happen!

In 1935, Julian D. Cromer sold p-nuts and a variety of vegetables from his one-man stand at the Assembly Street Curb Market in Columbia, S.C. Every morning he packed up his produce and drove downtown to the market where he roasted his own p-nuts. The fresh taste was a hit with the locals who were sick and tired of snacking on stale peanuts.

By 1937, Cromer’s one-man produce stand was booming, but his success could not go on unchallenged; another enterprising local set-up his own peanut stand directly across the aisle from Cromer’s. To lure customers, the new competition promised the “Best Peanuts in Town.” He even went so far as to tell everyone who walked by that Cromer’s p-nuts were not good.

Infuriated by what he heard, Cromer walked back to his produce stand and made a cardboard sign saying “Worst in Town.” Later, while he was still in a huff, he added one more word:

“Guaranteed.” His competitor was astonished that any man in his right mind would advertise his products that way. When customers walked by and chose between peanut purveyors, they made the logical decision — everyone flocked to Cromer’s and “Guaranteed Worst in Town” was

born. Business was so good in 1939 that Cromer quit selling other produce to devote all his time to the p-nut business.

After more than 79 years of business, Cromer’s is still a landmark in downtown Columbia, proudly displaying their infamous slogan. Today, Julian’s granddaughter, Carolette Cromer Turner, owns the family business. In the years since Julian Cromer first started his one-man produce stand, Cromer’s has grown to sell all kinds of fresh and flavorful snacks, as well as concession equipment, party supplies and advertising specialties. Of course, you can still get fresh p-nuts. And everything at Cromer’s is always “Guaranteed Worst in Town.”

We Want to Make a DifferenceSometime in our lifetime, we will all be touched by cancer, be it ourselves, a family member or a friend. Peggy and I made this bracelet for our family members. Each bead color stands for a word that helps cope with this terrible disease:

RED: for energy, love and strength

YELLOW: for hope

BLUE: for peace and calm

PURPLE: for spirituality

GREEN: for good luck

When we wore them, people inquired about them and asked if they could purchase one. We thought about it and thought “why not?” — there is strength in numbers and we would like to donate a portion of the sales to cancer research. If you are interested in owning one of these bracelets, please email [email protected] or call Cathy at 803-252-6162.

Sneakers were first produced in 1800. They had a simple rubber sole design and the name “sneaker” comes from the fact that their soles are smooth; that they hardly make a sound on the ground. Keds was the first company to produce sneakers, followed by Converse in the year 1917.Source: onceuponablackmoon.com

Midlands Medical Wellness Center, LLC services are expanding! Dr. Jandrette Rhoe, a board-certified physician, has been instrumental over the past seven years in helping to restore hormonal balance in both men and women. At Midlands Medical Wellness Center, LLC, Dr. Rhoe will evaluate you when you arrive for your initial consultation. Not only that, she will listen to you and address your specific concerns. After reviewing lab tests, she will make her recommendations, utilizing bio-identical hormones and supplements to maximize your body’s full potential. If you are experiencing mood swings, decreased sex drive, fatigue, vaginal dryness, brain fog, hot flashes, night sweats, inability to lose weight, headaches or muscle/joint aches, consider being evaluated for bio-identical hormone replacement.

More recently, Dr. Rhoe has become certified in the ONDAMED system, a machine that utilizes biofeedback to detect areas of inflammation in

the body. In the U.S., it is classified as a medical device that is used to treat symptoms relating to pain, stress and anxiety without using medications. People suffering from chronic conditions such as osteoporosis, fibromyalgia, arthritis and stress may find their symptoms improve. Many times patients become frustrated with medical care and Dr. Rhoe believes this may offer an effective answer

for some. Dr. Rhoe also had the opportunity to get intensive training in Germany, interacting with practitioners from all over the world who have been successfully treating patients for

two decades. She is excited about this modality!

Dr. Rhoe strives to help you become a better you! At our office there is no annual contract or monthly fees. Although insurance is not accepted, you pay only for services rendered. For more information or to schedule an appointment today, visit MidlandsMedWC.com or call (803) 223-9328.

Our pets are our four-legged family members and so deserve the best care we can offer to keep them healthy. Yearly exams, vaccinations, and monthly flea and heartworm prevention are all part of giving them the best foundation for a long healthy life. When our pets do become ill or are in pain, and medical intervention is needed, that same philosophy of providing the best and most comprehensive medical care that we can still holds true. Part of delivering great medical care includes offering several different options for your pet’s unique needs. That is where the term

“integrative medicine” was developed.

Western medicine, or the medical approach to disease with which most of us are familiar, includes the preventative medicine mentioned above and other common medical methodologies such as antibiotics and narcotic pain control that treat one problem at a time. These examples are both wonderful tools to treat infection and pain. Western medicine has provided several breakthrough advances in the treatment of disease.

The basic underlying principle of Western medicine however, is to treat ONLY the disease… not the entire patient. There are more comprehensive medical approaches that

“integrate” both traditional Western and more holistic alternative therapies for the benefit of our furry friends.

Integrative medicine combines all traditional and alternative therapeutic approaches to achieve the most comprehensive and thorough approach to your pet’s medical ailment. It is a holistic approach to disease. Holistic veterinary medicine means treatment of your pet’s medical conditions in a way that addresses the whole pet — from nose to tail. Instead of just treating one area of the body for disease, a holistic approach treats the pain of the

condition, the nutritional needs, environmental needs, emotional needs and all of the other medical ailments that lead to AND resulted from the onset of disease. Arthritis, for example, is a condition that is often treated with pain and anti-inflammatory medications.

Holistic treatment would include dietary management, supplements and herbal therapy, cold LASER treatments, chiropractic adjustments, and acupuncture and rehabilitative intervention in addition to simple pain management. This multimodal style helps to treat the arthritis itself and the underlying causes that led to the formation of arthritis.

Integrative and holistic medical intervention is uniquely tailored to each individual pet based on their needs and medical conditions. Cara Gardner, DVM, CVA, a veterinary acupuncturist specializing in integrative and holistic pet care, has joined

Four Paws Animal Clinic. Certified in veterinary acupuncture, K-LASER therapy and trained in veterinary chiropractic, Dr. Gardner combines traditional Chinese veterinary medicine with these complementary medical techniques to address the specific issues unique to each of your pet’s medical conditions.

Utilizing both Western and Eastern medical philosophies provides the most comprehensive medical approach to your pet’s health care needs

— osteoarthritis, kidney disease, cancer, anxiety issues, heart disease, seasonal allergies and several other complicated conditions often respond better and more quickly to this overall approach that treats the whole pet — from nose to tail. Dr. Gardner also has special interests in dermatology, behavior and nutrition.

On November 8, the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center will dazzle with the arrival of the Eighth Annual Pawmetto Lifeline Fur Ball, sponsored by Jim Hudson Lexus. A black tie event that raises money to support the mission of Pawmetto Lifeline, the Annual Fur Ball helps reduce pet overpopulation by providing funds for low-cost spays and neuters for pets, as well as the means to help rescue pets from being euthanized at the local municipal shelters.

Denise Wilkinson, CEO of Pawmetto Lifeline, is excited about the event this year, sharing, “Everything that we do at Pawmetto Lifeline is about moving our community to a No-Kill status, meaning that no companion pet dies simply because they are homeless. This is a community problem that will take a community to solve. We hope people will come to this spectacular event, have a great time and support our No-Kill Initiative.”

A colorful “Save the Date” promises food and adult beverages with music by Men of Distinction. The guests are invited to wear their most ravishing formal wear and the bars inside the ballroom will boast tasty signature drinks for the event, including “The Tail Wagger,” a long-time Fur Ball favorite.

The Fur Ball is held every fall as one of the major fundraising events for Pawmetto Lifeline, along with Bark to the Park in the spring. For its eighth year, volunteers are working very hard to ensure

that last year’s record of lives saved through the funds raised is broken.

The celebration benefiting homeless pets includes both a silent and a live auction. Live auction items at past Fur Ball Galas have included trips to Spain and Blue Sky paintings. This year promises new items and some of the old favorites. The silent auction is held throughout the event and includes items such as handmade couture clothing and special getaways to desirable destinations.

During the live auction, the Fund-a-Need portion of the evening will take place. Fund-a-Need raises money for special projects at the facility that are not included in the annual budget. “This evening is a representation of the dedication of our staff, sponsors and volunteers to the homeless pets of the Midlands,” Denise Wilkinson said. “For our guests attending the Fur Ball, we know they will give from their hearts and are dedicated to our vision of becoming a no-kill community.”

“Pawmetto Lifeline’s Annual Fur Ball is absolutely one of the best charitable events in South Carolina. The money raised goes to support more than 35,000 animals each year through spaying and neutering, health care and adoptions. In addition, approximately

4,000 animals are rescued from Richland and Lexington counties’ shelters each year. Instead of being euthanized, these animals end up in loving homes as family pets. It has been said, ‘You can judge the character of a community by the way it treats its animals.’ I encourage all of the Midland’s animal lovers to join us on November 8 at the Convention Center for this worthy cause,” Ron Roe, Fur Ball chairman and Pawmetto Lifeline Board member enthused.

To participate in all the fun and attend the Eighth Annual Fur Ball Gala, you can visit pawmettolifeline.org or contact Sarah Johnson at 803-465-9174 or email [email protected].

Get Your Gear On offers all that and more!

As the summer heat dissipates, the cool rivers call us to enjoy the afternoons with family and friends. Even when that familiar Columbia mugginess sticks around through the fall months, one of the best ways to unwind from a long week is to spend a little time outdoors — and the refreshing waters of the Saluda River are ideal for this!

Get Your Gear On provides river trips throughout the year, but the Autumn months are particularly outstanding.

The Saluda River, an outstanding local attraction, offers a range from tranquil stretches of calm water to lightly exciting whitewater. Everything from tubes to guided kayak trips are available. Other trip options are offered on the Broad River and the Congaree River, with the lovely possibility of combining all three for a full morning-into-afternoon experience.

Romantic evenings watching the harvest moon rise on the more calm sections of the Congaree River are a beautiful way to introduce the evening to that certain special someone. Get Your Gear On offers those trips, too. Plus, as the cooler air comes in and the leaves begin to change color, trips on Congaree Creek (only a few minutes from downtown) offer calm, winding waterways with cathedraled branches over a reflective black-water creek.

Columbia and the surrounding areas have so much to offer in terms of quiet escapes into natural settings. Get

Your Gear On is all about introducing people to the outdoors, whether on the rivers, hiking trails, biking trails, canoeing, kayaking or standup paddleboarding. With the store ethos of “Keeping the Outdoors Affordable,” you are guaranteed to find great deals on quality consigned outdoor gear and apparel alongside the most reliable and affordable new gear for all of your outdoor outfitting needs.
