LettersDear Editor,I’d just like to give a big “thumbs up” to our long time local artist Stella Henry for winning the Best Local Artist and Best Artist Over-all awards. Stella has always sketched and painted all her life, many locals have one of her paintings (for the pricey sum of $30 in-cluding the frame) Our family has a painting done by Stella of our old farm, which we will always treasure. Congratulations Stella you are a very talented lady and well respected by many of our generation. Cheers to the quiet achiever!

Huh…Huh…HAYFEVER!This time of year is beautiful, but for hay fever sufferers the flowery meadows are a night-mare of red eyes and runny noses. Sensible advice is to minimise your contact with aller-gens… but this isn’t so easy if you live smack bang in the middle of canola fields! If you dis-like dosing up on drowsy drugs to beat the sniffles, natural remedies could be the best

VEGETATION MANAGEMENT

Why?To protect public safety and reliability of electricity supply, network assets are regularly inspected to ensure minimum safety clearance zones are maintained between vegetation and overhead powerlines.

To ensure the safety of our crews and the public, planned supply interruptions may be necessary.

Any customers affected by these scheduled supply interruptions will receive notification in advance.

Where?Vegetation will be trimmed in Canowindra and surrounding areas including Cargo, Cudal, Eugowra, Gooloogong, Mandagery, Moorbel, Murga and Toogong.

When? Commencing early October through to late November 2014 (weather permitting).

What do you need to do?You don’t need to do anything. If you have any questions regarding the removal of trees, please contact your local Essential Energy vegetation control officer on 13 23 91

Essential Energy has developed a Tree Planting Guide to assist residents in determining suitable species to plant near powerlines.

thing for you. Some options that could help are as follows… Vitamin C is a known natural antihistamine and can be found in oranges, lemons and other citrus fruits. Red capsicum and chilli peppers contain capsaicin, which is a com-ponent that, when eaten, opens nasal pas-sages and helps reduce congestion. Garlic is nature’s wonder drug, it boosts immunity, is an anti-inflammatory and surprise, surprise,

can alleviate minor hay fever symptoms. Another natural road to go down is acupunc-ture, which is available from Aligned Health & Wellbeing. This ancient Chinese medicine can dramatically reduce symptoms such as itchy eyes. Using sterile needles, acupunc-ture can pinpoint specific areas of our bod-ies. Take action this Spring and stop suffering those sneezes!

Don’t Be Tricked By Telstra Hoax!

During the past few weeks you may have noticed some perfor-mance issues with phones. Fraudsters have used these tech-nical problems to their advantage and have been contacting people in Canowindra pretending to be Telstra officers. In the phone calls they sound plausible, reciting (fake) job numbers and talking about corrective activities…then they ask for fi-nancial details. Sadly, some members of the community have been fooled by these scam artists and have suffered loss of money or inconvenience as a result. Scammers will try any-thing to get your attention and fool you into providing access to your personal information. Woolworth’s have also alerted the public about a phishing scam where a Woolworths gift card is offered once you fill out a “Customer Satisfaction Sur-vey”. “Phishing” is a scheme in which well-known brands are imitated to try and get personal information. If you’re unsure about whom you’re talking to, do not pro-vide any information or grant them remote access to your computer. To confirm the legitimacy of the call, ask for a ref-erence number and call back on a trusted number (a number in the phone book). If you want to find out more information on the latest scams visit: www.stgeorge.com.au/scams or sign up for regular online safety and security updates with Stay Smart Alert at www.staysmartonline.gov.au/alert_service Do not be fooled by these scam operators, regardless of how plausible they sound! Never give any form of bank details or passwords over the phone.

Show Snippets - This year’s Show was a cracker! Whether it was trying not to throw up on the Cha Cha, cheering on the shear-ers or comparing flowers in the Pavilion there was something for everyone. A few of the highlights this year were Tommy Jeff’s humungous beetroots which nabbed a first prize ribbon (they were bigger than my head) a 92 year old lady named Cecile Farley who enjoys sketching trees at Nangar and won a well-earned first prize certificate for one of these sketches and an extremely fluffy black chicken. Another great addition for this year is the Canowindra Bakehouse Farmer’s Chal-lenge. 6 teams competed: Hassad, Cargo Cobras, The Todd Wyburn Extremes + 3, Ar-mageddon, Bonanza and Pythons Dads. The teams had to complete a series of tasks including rolling up swags, stacking hay bales and carrying buckets. All teams gave it their best shot but the Pythons Dads were the victors!

IGA Price Match Promise! On Wednesday IGA’s Price Match Promise kicked off! Price Match means that they have reduced prices on hundreds of favourite products in store to match the everyday shelf price of major supermarket chains Woolworths and Coles. Price matches will be chosen based on the

The harmonious couple have been playing music together for around 15 years. They both are blessed with unique voices that suit the rock and country

genres. Pete is known for being a bit of a clown on stage and is always able to make the audience laugh with his antics. The two compliment each other with their humour and talent and love to watch the audience as they perform and accommodate to their tastes. Orange Civic Theatre will be hosting a new rural musical this November which all farm-ers won’t be able to resist! Pete the Sheep is based on Jackie French and Bruce Whatley’s quirky and quintessentially Australian pic-ture book. The story goes as follows; Shaun is the new sheep shearer in Shaggy Gully. All the others shearers have sheep dogs to help them, but Shaun’s partner is a sheep-sheep! The other shearers in the shed are not happy with Shaun and his sheep-sheep and reject Shaun and Pete. Shaun and Pete set up their own Shearing Sa-lon in town where they are inundated with woolly clients, who are delighted with Shaun’s styling prowess. This hilarious musical com-edy, imaginatively told by four performers playing shearers, dogs and sheep, explores the challenges and rewards of being an in-dividual whilst working with the flock!

IMAGE: Retirees enjoying the Oak Tree lifestyle.

Retirees Have Something To Smile About National retirement village operators Oak Tree Group understand retirement should be a time to enjoy life, a time to do the activities that make you smile… Remember, as you reached 55, retirement was something you started to look forward to. You pictured time spent reading the clas-sics on the porch, tinkering in the shed and taking the old cruiser out on road trips, but then you woke up and reality set in. Now you are standing on the back steps,

looking at more household responsibili-ties than recreation. Daily chores, weekly upkeep and regular repair work; you have maintenance on the old weatherboard, mowing of the quarter acre block and clear-ing the leaves from the gutters, it is quite daunting and understandably not how you envisaged retirement would be. Recognising that physically demanding maintenance can become overwhelming and time-consuming for seniors, Oak Tree

have the solution. Oak Tree Retirement Vil-lage Orange, a community lifestyle village for 55yrs and over with an on-site Village Manager to oversee all the service mainte-nance projects from communal landscape gardening, external cleaning and pest control through to path clearing, community centre jet blasting and more. “When a resident moves to one of our Oak Tree communities, maintenance becomes a thing of the past,” says Oak Tree Region-al Sales Manager Melissa Luck. “They no longer need to climb up a ladder to paint the house or clean the gutters, they don’t even need to be pushing a mower, our Village Man-ager looks after all of that.” With less heavy gardening and mainte-nance, as an Oak Tree Village resident you have more time for social activities. The vil-lage which is currently under construction, will have easily accessible recreational fa-cilities, such as bowling green, landscaped gardens and a function venue to entertain family and friends. The Village Manager will also oversee a calendar of events from daily activities to keep the mind and body active such as billiards, cards, Tai Chi, through to special events and outings to the movies and local places of interest. With their intentional regional focus Oak Tree is helping to keep seniors at home in the areas they’ve grown up in, lived in and loved. If you are ready to embrace a carefree re-tirement lifestyle make enquiries today on 1300 367 155 or visit www.oaktreegroup.com.au and make it your time to take it easy.

Asparagus is hereEveryone loves spring; warmer weather, lush green landscape, blossom, the new leaves un-furling, hay fever, pesky birds scratching up the garden … Spring also means asparagus. I know we can get asparagus virtually year round these days, but it is never as good as when it is in season. No surprises there. NOW is the time for asparagus. I prefer spears with thick stems because they are much juicier than the thinner ones. There is no difference in the quality, just the maturity of the plant. Look for spears that have the tip tightly closed with no sign of flowering and ones that have smooth stems, creases mean the asparagus has been picked for a while and is beginning to dry out. We mostly have green asparagus in our shops but keep an eye out for precious white asparagus. This is actually the same plant but the soil is heaped up around the stem as it grows meaning no chlorophyll can develop. White asparagus is usually quite thick and strangely needs to be cooked for slightly longer than the green, giving it a delicious buttery quality. Asparagus is best treated simply so its bril-liance can shine. I cook mine in lightly salted boiling water until tender. Then I drain it then rest it on tea towel to absorb excess water. Then all is needed is some good salt, freshly ground black pepper and a pour of your fa-vourite extra virgin olive oil, local of course. If I want to have the asparagus cold I do ex-actly the same thing but then leave it to cool in its own time rather than plunging into cold

water; the colour isn’t quite as vibrant but the flavour is vastly better. Cooked like this, asparagus teams superbly with soft cooked eggs, smoked fish, toasted chopped hazelnuts, shaved parmesan, silky prosciutto, crisp bacon or any combination you wish. Pile it up on your favourite platter and include it in your salads. Buy it little and often and eat as much as possible. Then wait for next year. Now is asparagus time.

Happy cookingLesley Russell

Asparagus Throughout HistoryAh asparagus, you noble and honourable veg-etable. In the 1st century B.C Romans loved asparagus so much that they preserved it by freezing it in the Alps. Plus Queen Nefertiti of Egypt proclaimed that asparagus was food of the Gods! Here are some fun facts about our much beloved plant…

1. It takes three years to go from seed to harvesting.

2. If you eat too much of it, your pee smells funny.

3. White asparagus is one of the most la-bour-intensive vegetables to grow.

4. Oceana County, Michigan, is self-pro-claimed asparagus capital of the world.

5. Chickens can help farm asparagus.6. Asparagus is recognised as one of the

world’s leading natural aphrodisiacs.Who said vegetables were boring?

Audrey is bigger than she was yesterday. Now she needs a bigger house. So she tells her dad to build her one. At the top of a tree. The house is perfect in every way. Except for one thing … This is a gently humorous story that explores the clash between a quest for independence and the longing for security. A House of Her Own captures all that is wonderful about fa-thers and their little girls. Recommended for 2-6 year olds.

Your Local Business Insurance ExpertsInsurance Specialists, Morgan Chamberlain and Associates Director Jim Morgan believes that whether you’re a farmer, a small busi-ness owner or a major industry, you should take just an hour out of your day to review your insurance options with a professional broker. “Frequently people just call an in-surance company or go online and select a policy based on the cheapest price,” Mr Mor-gan said. “You won’t know until you have a claim whether your policy is suitable. Often you’ll get by, but if a claim gets knocked back the consequences for you and your family or business can be disastrous.” Mr Morgan said Morgan Chamberlain and Associates have achieved some great outcomes for their cli-ents to date. “It’s amazing how often we find people are paying too much for their insurance because they haven’t had someone go over it for them. Not only have we been able to save them money, but we’ve been able to secure them better coverage than they previously had.”

Morgan Chamberlain and Associates spe-cialise in rural and commercial insurance, offering products from over 30 insurers worldwide. According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, people living in rural communities are more likely to suffer from cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and other serious illnesses compared to people living in the major cities. One way to turn this around and to improve your potential for a long and healthy life is to participate in a program of regular exer-cise. Doing nothing is easy, but if you wish to make a difference in how you look and feel while significantly increasing your life expec-tancy, then start exercising today!

Roses are a feature in many of our gardens and have been so across the world for many hundreds of years. The Romans apparently were rose enthusiasts and Europeans began to widely cultivate roses from the eighteenth century when new cultivars were developed from species imported from China. Here in Australia we have a massive choice of rose colours and growth forms to choose from-some of which were developed over-seas and others which have been developed by Australian rose enthusiasts. Each year I receive catalogues from prominent rose fam-ilies such as Treloar (Victoria), Swane (NSW) and Ross (SA) and each of these have 400-600 roses to choose from! Some of the rose cultivars that catch my eye are listed below, but there are obviously many others that gardeners love.White flowers: Iceberg, Mothers Love, Glamis CastleRed: Mister Lincoln, Red Riding Hood, Papa MeilandScarlet/Purple: The Dark Lady, Princess Anne, Young LycidasYellow/Orange: St Patrick, Splice, Gold Bunny, French Lace, Lady of ShalottPink: Perfume Passion, Addictive Lure, Herit-age, Queen ElizabethMulticoloured: Eyes for You(pink/white), Gar-den Delight (red/yellow), Ballerina (pink/white)Climbers:PierredeRonsard (pink), Veilchen-blau (violet/white), Zepherine Drouhin (pink), Altissimo (red). Groundcovers: Purple Rain (violet), Heides-ommer (white), Mainau Feuer (red). After selecting the roses that are the colour or form that you want, a few tips for getting the best out of your rose bushes are:• Fertilize roses in spring and then mulch around them with hay or sugar cane mulch• Lightly prune back stems with spent flow-ers during the growing/flowering season.• Heavily prune bush roses (to about a third of their full height) towards the end of winter• Don’t prune climbing roses for the first 3 or 4 years of growth• Minimise black spot (a fungal infection on leaves) by avoiding over leaf watering and remove infected leaves. Use fungicide spray every 10 to 14 days if the black spots are in-creasing during wet, warm weather.• Keep an eye out for aphid insects accumu-lating on fresh shoots of rose bushes-rub them off with your fingers. Spray with a low toxicity insecticide if they continue to build up.

Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers among Australian women. Although survival rates continue to improve, timing is the most crucial element, with early diagnosis key to beating this disease. Octo-ber is Australia’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which provides us with an opportunity to focus on how it impacts our community. Women should check their breasts every day for changes, get to know them. Get your partners involved, I’m sure they’ll be happy to oblige! Changes to look for include:• a new lump or lumpiness, especially if only in one breast • a change in the size or shape of your breast• a change to the nipple, such as crusting, ulcer, redness or inversion• a nipple discharge that occurs without squeezing• a change in the skin of your breast such as redness or dimpling• an unusual pain that doesn’t go away. Many people do not realise that men can also develop breast cancer. Both men and women have breast tissue, although men obviously have much less. Breast cancer is uncommon in men but can happen; in 2010 127 men were diagnosed with breast cancer in Australia. Remember, timing is important, if you think something is wrong with your body don’t be afraid to speak up. You are not wasting a doctor’s time if it puts your mind at ease and definitely not if it saves your life. Libbie Douglass is the President of the Breast Cancer Support Group for Orange and the surrounding districts. Libbie founded the group after she discovered she had breast cancer at the age of 38 and the group is now about to celebrate its 25th year! Members meet on the first Wednesday of every month at the HACCS Centre in March Street, Or-ange. All are welcome to attend. Libbie says “the big message is don’t be afraid. Keep up with your treatments; they’re very good these days. Initially it can feel like power and control is taken away from you and it’s all a bit full on but once that calms down its good to attend a group where people are going through the same experience that you are.” Anyone in need of support can contact Libbie on 0411518266 and for free resources and support, including the My Journey Kit for newly di-agnosed women, go to www.bcna.org.au or contact the Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA) on 1800 500 258.
