The BEAT spoke to Carel Coetzee, the owner of Spar, who said that the fire was caused by a short in one of the oven’s electrical circuits. He said that although the fire was not large, the bakery would be non- functional for a few days. They were expecting technicians to assess the damages on Wednesday. Coetzee expressed his relief for the limited damage, as the incident took place next to the store’s gas storage unit. “There was no need for panic and the situation was dealt with very quickly,” he said. The alleged squatters in thenewly formed informal settlement,Malema View, say that they willfetch water from neighbouringsections, light candles, and usewood in place of electricity anddig pit toilets to make themselvescomfortable in their new homes. They said this during an

address by former Bela-Belamayors Freddy Hlungwane andHenrietta Ledwaba on Thursday,16 April. The address by theformer mayors follows the illegaloccupation on what is believed tobe a private farm.Ledwaba advised them to stop

being hard-headed and leave theland to wait for the municipality tofind suitable housing for themwhere they can be provided withbasic services such as water, electricity and sanitation.Ledwaba told the residents that

if they do not vacate the area,

things might turn ugly for themshould the municipality file acourt case against them. Shealso said that because the landalready has an owner themunicipality will not be able todeliver the expected services tothem. The residents allegedly invaded

part of a private farm in theprocess of carving out theirstands, and the leadership feltthat they had to intervene.Hlungwane told The BEAT that hehad no clear knowledge of thesituation, but said that he hadheard rumours about the landbeing privately owned and notmunicipal land. He said that hehad called in Ledwaba toaddress the matter. The residents told Ledwaba to

leave them alone, and said thatthey had waited for far too longfor their municipality to noticethem and delivery their rightfulservices so they served

themselves instead. They alsotold her that as former mayor, she failed to help them when shehad had the chance, and refusedto listen to her now that she ispowerless. They warned her not to mention

any political party in her address,as the gathering was not political, but concerned with disadvantagedresidents seeking homes. Theytold her that if she wanted to talkpolitics she could mobilize herown people at her own time andorganize her own meeting, whereshe could speak freely.Lasi Maswangwanyi, Neo

Moloko and Sunday Modike, leading the residents, said thatthe municipality should stoptelling them that the land belongsto someone else and show themthe title deeds and supportingdocuments to prove the issue athand. They said that until then, they

would consider the area theirs.

involvement in an attempted murder andhousebreaking at a residential home inLeeupoort in February of 2014. Magistrate’s Court, Groenewaldt testifiedthat Munetsi had been involved in theattack, and that he had taken a T-shirt onthe morning of the attack, which shecomplained belonged to her.A photo of Munetsi wearing the T-shirt

surfaced on the Internet shortly after theattack.“Trymore stole a ladies’ Spar Marathon

shirt which belonged to me on the night ofthe attack. He wore it when they arrestedhim after the attack. I know that the shirt ismine because I got it at a ladies’ race inPort Elizabeth in 1996. You can’t find this

Munetsi had worn on the day of his arrest, and said that she had received the shirt atthe same event in 1998.Munetsi denied the claim and told the

court that the t-shirt had come to him fromhis brother, who works at Spar, andbelongs to him.Munetsi claimed that he had been

assaulted by the police from the Rooibergstation.Constable Klaas Ledwaba of the Rooiberg

police denied the allegation and stated thatthere is no proof of any assault on thesuspect.De Beer said that Munetsi must be lying

about the provenance of the shirt, and saidthat Munetsi’s brother should be called totestify that he had indeed sent the shirt tohim.“Munetsi is lying his way into more

Klaas Mabunda, a Modimolleresident, writes: South Africa ourhome, the land of receptiveness, the soil fertilized by shelter, the skycovering good heartedness, theSun that shines upon humanbrotherhood, the night that assurespeace, tranquillity and safety. Our hood that’s defined by the

rainbow of assorted tribes andbeliefs, the environment we havenever detached from harmony, thesociety that on its independent ownis welfare and an example ofeverything good.Barbarism has been known but is

not contained in the South Africanculture. We know humanity, we livemorality, our pride is in caring andour gifts are in giving, yet we are ofa materially imperfect design, butnever espouse carelessness.I have been constipated by

dismay. The actions of my fellowSouth Africans have overfed mynot-so-big tummy with rocks andsand. My soul is contaminated bydisbelief, and I have no doubt thatmy brothers and sisters areintoxicated by sudden evil, forreasons known only by the hatredthat is not naturally a part of theirnatures. The recent actions of those I

consider patriots of love;administering violence, intoleranceand rapid victimization of those whocame in our country for refuge, issad. The relentlessness of our fellow

countrymen and women submittedus to scared threats by cowardlyterrorists, with a libido supersedingthe ruthlessness of a gun, rascalswhose attacks are targeting theunprepared and defenceless, theBoko Haram. The indecent xenophobic attacks

planned by filthy mouths are notonly opportunistic but acompromise to our state security, rendering our writings to questionthe intelligence of the NationalIntelligence Agency of our country,as these devilish actions shouldhave been detected andintercepted immediately theyshowed their ugly thoughts. The NIA should perhaps suspend

their focus in dividing politicalparties, tabbing telephoneconversations of harmlesscivilians, being used to protectindividuals, and prepare thecountry to peace and strategicdefence against vulnerability andopportunism.Let us not rise against

Xenophobia on reading and writingplatforms. Let us rather conveneour community meetings withpatriotic members of the SouthAfrican Police Service, to teach ourpeople that only language used forvalidation of xenophobic attackscan make our stupidity feelintelligent.Tell our people that we are a

society of Christianity, Muslim andother religions, we are broughttogether by faith, and kept alive byour unconditional love, becausenot only love is life but it isrevolutionary in all tasks.Any bloodshed and displacing of

people is a sequestration ofrighteousness.Let us rise and defend humanity!

Thabo Marema, a Bela-Belaresident writes: It is quite clearthat the so called xenophobicattacks are fuelled by a lot ofunderlying factors, althoughthese attacks should becondemned in the harshestpossible terms and the culpritdealt with as heavily as possible.Everyone should take

responsibility of what ishappening now.Firstly Government should

make sure it tighten theimmigration laws and it must alsotake its responsibility of patrollingborders seriously in order to dealwith illegal immigrants.Government should also find away of dealing with crimescommitted by foreigners.Secondly, it is the responsibility

of Government to deal with theissue of poverty andunemployment as this is one ofthe frustrations faced by theyouth in our country. It is timethat Government stop paying lipservice and do what is supposedto be done: create jobs andalleviate poverty.Having said that, it is true that

some of the foreigners areinvolved in crime and that doesnot help the situation at all. It isthe responsibility of all foreignersto conduct themselvesresponsibly and subjectthemselves to the laws of thecountry or they should peacefullyleave this country and go home.It is a time now when we don’t

need spectators. People shouldby now know that South Africabelongs to all those who live in it,therefore all citizens, regardlessof colour and creed, as well asGovernment should standtogether and face this problem, let us all do what is expected ofus and make sure we create abetter life for all

Donkeys play a huge role in Africa’seconomy, yet these magnificent beastsare often mistreated and overworked inseveral countries. A gathering withdelegates from across Africa washosted on Wednesday 15 April atForever Resorts in Bela-Bela, by theNational Society for the Prevention ofCruelty to Animals (NSPCA) and wasmade possible by the DonkeySanctuary, a non-profit organizationwhich focuses on the wellbeing ofdonkeys on a global scale.“Donkeys are often seen as invisible

animals but these animals are theeconomic driving force in manycountries. They are used for harshlabour and not well looked after,” saidthe Donkey Sanctuary’s director ofinternational operations in the UnitedKingdom, Stephen Blakeway.Blakeway said that the aim of the visit

to assess the overall working conditionsof local donkey owners and thecondition of the carts that are used.Blakeway explained that the aim was notto report mistreated donkeys to the localauthorities but to advise owners on howtheir donkeys could be better lookedafter.During assessments each cart was

judged by its size and weight and eachdonkey by its physical condition. It was discovered that the majority of

carts were made out of steel and leftover car parts which made it veryheavy. Each donkey was also inspected for

ailments and injuries.Wendy Wilson, an inspector at the

NSPCA said that dramatic changes hadto be made regarding the behaviourtoward the animals. According to herdonkeys are often unnecessarilywhipped or injured and the organizationhas conducted these visits todiscourage this type of behaviour.Local donkey owners, Piet Hlongwane

and Isack Seema spoke about theirdonkeys, the work that they do and thechallenges they face.“I use my donkeys to transport water

to people in the township. I work withthem for five days a week and allowthem to rest. Our cart is made out ofsteel and admittedly very heavy, wehave tried to use a wooden cart beforebut this was damaged due to the stateof our roads,” said Hlongwane.Seema said that medical treatment for

donkeys is a big challenge that ownersface. He explained that there is nomedical facility in the township and thatlocal veterinarian is too expensive forthem to use.“We would like a medical supply

centre for our donkeys because wecannot afford the fees at our local vet. Itis important for us and the communitythat the donkeys stay healthy,”

training. The main aim of FEDSAS remainsensuring quality education and this canonly happen if everybody has equal accessto opportunities.”FEDSAS’ governing body training focuses

on three key questions, namely:What should a governing body do?What should a governing body try to

avoid? How can FEDSAS help you? It’s a multimedia presentation of three

hours and is very practical in nature.“We encourage schools to send the full

governing body – parents, staff andlearners – to attend the training. Thegoverning bodies will manage theirschools for the next three years and it isnecessary to get everyone on the samepage in order to start focusing on thekey functions of a governing body,” saysDeacon.Contact details of the various provincial

managers are available on the FEDSASwebsite at www.fedsas.org.za. FEDSASmembers can register directly on thewebsite, and those seeking furtherinformation can contact Dr Jaco Deacon,Deputy CEO of FEDSAS at 083 795 2928
