The MEC for the Department of Safety,Security and Liaison in Limpopo, MapulaMokaba-Phukwana, and Manager for RoadTraffic in the Waterberg District, SimonKekana, extended words of gratitude to thefour traffic officers who made a breakthroughin busting a cigarette-smuggling syndicate.

This follows an incident on Friday, 25 March.The officers involved include Ati BrainsPhashi, Kedibone Matsaung, Sello Maleka,Harry Monawa and Solly Ndlovu.

The officers were on duty when Phashi andMatsaung saw a suspicious-looking vehiclepassing on the road where they were working,travelling south towards the N1. Phashi toldThe BEAT that the vehicle, a white RenaultSandero sedan, failed to stop when ordered.

They chased after it, calling on theircolleagues for back-up. As they werechasing the vehicle, a black NissanNavara bakkies drove up behind theofficers and apparently pretended to beassisting them while instead attempting todistract them.

The sedan was nabbed at the Settlers-Codrington off-ramp, while the bakkie wasfound abandoned in the veld. Kekana toldThe BEAT that the driver and passengersabandoned the vehicle and fled on foot.Only one suspect from the bakkie wasarrested, and later identified as PatsonChabikwa. He was found in possession ofthree cellphones and two illegalpassports. The police checked the phonesand found calls and messages linkingChabikwa to the incident. He wasdetained and appeared before the Bela-

was rented.According to the investigators, the bakkie

was escorting the sedan and had fivepassengers in it, while the sedan’soccupants included only the driver andone passenger. The sedan’s seats wereremoved to make space for the cigarettes,a total of 2540 cartons with an estimatedstreet value of about R100 000.During an interview with The BEAT, the

officers said that the scene seemed likethey were shooting a movie and theyenjoyed every minute of the chase.They said that they only came back to

reality after the incident, when theirbodies were feeling the aftermath. Theyalso said that they often long for this

kind of excitement, as it reminds themwhy they joined the department in thefirst place.Kekana and Mokaba-Phukwana said

that the officers did an outstanding joband deserved a great reward. They addedthat dedication and determination leadsto an officer going beyond the call of duty toensure great results and the incident provedjust that.“I always advise my colleagues to say their

final goodbyes to their families when leavingtheir homes for work because they are not surewhether they will return unscathed. Our kind ofjob is dangerous and poses risks to the lives ofthe officers involved,” said Kekana.The officers made their statements to the

police to open cases and determine charges forthe syndicate.Investigations are continuing.

Police pounce onlocal drug dealers

Local drug dealers got a nasty surprisewhen members of the Bela-Bela CrimeIntelligence unit and the Provincial DrugUnit pounced on an alleged distributor inPhagameng, Modimolle.

According to Colonel Lindie Marx, theBela-Bela station commander, the officersfound a variety of drugs with an estimatedstreet value of R500 000 in a house atPhagameng on Thursday, 24 March.

A woman was arrested on the scene andwill be appearing in court soon. Morepeople are being sought in connection withthe incident, according to Marx.

Marx said that it is being alleged that thesedrugs were being transshipped in Bela-Bela, and would have been distributedsoon. This is the fourth successful drug bustsince January.

The police were unwilling to release moreinformation regarding the case at this time.

Cops foil dagga harvest Ronél van Jaarsveld

A flourishing tunnel farming businessoutside Modimolle ran into trouble with thelaw on Thursday, 17 March, whenModimolle police arrested two daggafarmers during a raid.The police received information that

dagga was being cultivated in tunnels onthe farm on the Elandsfontein Road nearLoubad.Two South African citizens, Gordon

Gastard (55) and Jacqueline Ziji (45) werearrested. They appeared in the ModimolleMagistrate’s Court on Friday, 18 March oncharges of cultivating dagga. They will beappearing again in April.According to Warrant Officer James

Findlay, the Modimolle Policespokesperson, these dagga plants areslightly different from the kind normallyfound in the area.The police found plants that had grown up

to shoulder-height, as well as already-packaged product in baggies and glassbottles.The value of the find has not yet been

confirmed.

Five of the thirteen trial-awaiting suspects who hadescaped from the Modimollepolice holding cells have allbeen re-arrested.

Modimolle policespokesperson Warrant OfficerJames Findlay said that thesuspects forced open the wiremesh in the roof of theexercise room using someunknown object and escaped.

Tshepo Lelang was arrestedfor burglary, and wasrecaptured on Wednesday, 16March near Pienaarsrivier.Phillip Phasha, who wasarrested for common robbery,was found in Vaalwater onThursday, 17 March. Anotherrobbery suspect, AndriesShimika, was allegedly foundin possession of dagga whenhe was recaptured on Friday,18 March in Phagameng,Modimolle.

Warrant Officer Findlay saidthat the search for theprisoners who remain at largecontinues.

Limpopo Policespokesperson Colonel RonelOtto said that although initialreports had 14 prisonersescape, it was later confirmedthat the number was only 13.

The re-arrested prisonerswere expected to appearbefore the ModimolleMagistrate’s Court onTuesday, 29 March to face anadditional charge of escapingfrom lawful custody each, ontop of whatever charges theywere already facing.

At the time of this writing, itwas believed that eightescapees remained at large.

Young woman mutilated in allegedrelationship brawl

A young woman from Bela-Bela was mutilated during afight in Extension 5, formerlyknown as Mandela Village.

Johanna Sebelebele told TheBEAT that she was attackedby her lover’s wife anddaughter on Thursday, 24March. She said that she wasattacked after a formerboyfriend, the father of herchildren, told her lover’s wifeabout the relationship.

“When my lover found outthat his wife knew about us,he told me to deny everythingif she confronted me,” shesaid. “To my surprise, Ifound that he had admittedeverything to her after I haddone as he told me.

“She confronted me with hertwo daughters and her son-in-law, and they attacked me.”

During the scuffle thatallegedly followed,Sebelebele says that one ofher assailants got her teeth

into Sebelebele’s lower lip,and refused to let go. The otherwoman is alleged to have bittenoff part of Sebelebele’s lower lipand spit it out.

“She said she would do it againif I do not stay away from theirfather,” she said.

Sebelebele said that she wantsother women to know the risks ofadultery.

She also, however, said thatsince she will now be scarredand, according to her, unable tofind another man, she intends tokeep the other woman’s husband.

“I became his mistress becausemy boyfriend was troubling me,”she said. “My boyfriend and Ibroke up four times. Recently, Itold him that I would not becoming back to him againbecause he cheats on me. That’swhen he went to my lover’swife.”

She says that she lives in fear ofbeing attacked, but plans to fightback if she is attacked again.

Hospital workers’ ‘go-slow’ continues

Health workers at the Bela-Bela Local Hospitalare continuing with their go-slow, following arecent protest to raise their demands with theirsuperiors before the Easter holidays. WilsonMatlaisane of NEHAWU confirmed that thego-slow is still taking place as the members areawaiting management from the district level tointervene. He added that if matters arediscussed internally and the gatheringsubsequently fails to reach amicableresolutions, the external management has to beengaged for further intervention.

The go-slow started from Tuesday, 8 Marchas a means of drawing the hospital’smanagement’s attention to the employees’problems. Their memorandum of grievancesincluded among others shortage of staff, thedissatisfying Performance ManagementDevelopment System evaluation process,overtime payments, the prioritisation ofoutsourcing services and poor security.

Various unions’ executives representing theworkers including NEHAWU, DENOSA,HOSPESA and PSA met several times with the

Lizzy Bapelahospital’s management to discuss the workers’demands and reach satisfying solutions, but thematter is still in discussions.

“We sent all necessary documents to amember from the province who will berepresenting the district manager and we arewaiting for them to respond with a date for ameeting between us and their office. We areback at work but still on a go-slow, meaningwe are now not compromising what we wereappointed for in our line of work. Themanagement has not yet met or resolved evenone of our demands, which is why we optedfor upper management. If they also fail us, wewill resort to the MEC’s office, failure towhich we will engage into what we call astrike,” said Matlaisane.

Dressed in their unions’ T-shirts, the workerschanted and danced throughout the hospitalcorridors, calling to their managers to listen totheir demands. They were also singing againsta rumour saying that whoever is participatingin the go-slow will be charged and not paidfor the days spent not working.

Meanwhile, the workers stood by theirstatement that they will not attend to patientssent from Modimolle’s FH Odendaal Hospital

unless they receiveextra payment forthese additionalpatients. Patientsfrom the hospitalwere also leftunattended when theworkers mobilisedfor support in allhospital units onWednesday, 16 March. At that time, theunions’ representatives were attending anothermeeting with management.

The hospital management promised torespond with comment after the meeting withrepresentatives of the unions.

Malema listened to the problems laid outby the members of the party.

Among other issues raised was theleadership of the party in Bela-Bela;members complained of alleged feelings ofsuperiority among senior party members, aswell as alleged illegal meetings.

They also mentioned the issue ofmembership card for the new members.“We have to work in unity so that we can

follow the same vision” said Malema. Healso said that no one in the party wasallowed to hold meetings at their homes.“From now on meetings will be held at

public places like the community hall orparks, and not at someone’s home,” saidMalema.He said that he was giving them until 1st

Monageng said that Malema‘s visit wasimportant as the party was having problemswith factionalism.“I am happy because everyone managed to

raise their issues and now we have commongoals ahead of the local governmentelections,” said Monageng.Party agents were given T-shirt as part of

Modimolle water situation progressively improving

Modimolle Local Municipalityspokesperson Patrick Shika has on Tuesday,29 March indicated that there was tangibleprogress in the area regarding theremedying of the current water crisis.Shika told The BEAT that at least fourboreholes at Driehek have already beencompleted, equipped and tested.

According to the municipal spokesperson,the four boreholes are working well, andwill be ready when their electricity isconnected.

He said a constructor is already on siteand the electrification process will becompleted in due course.

Another borehole was also drilled atExtension 10 and according to Shika, it wasstill being tested.

The re-drilling of a borehole in Extension5 proved fruitless, as the hole found nowater.

Extension 5 residents have beenexperiencing severe water shortages andrely mostly on water tankers which aredispatched by the municipality to the area.

Shika said the water tankers will bedispatched to Extensions 5 and 13 until the

situation has been fully resolved.He said Extension 5 residents are still

experiencing water challenges because theyare situated on a high lying area.As a solution, the local pressure tower has

been repaired and was expected to startassisting in boosting water supply to thisproblematic area of Extension 5.The drilling work process will now focus

on Modimolle’s Extensions 8 and 13.Shika has indicated that the municipality is

also working hand in glove with theDepartment of Water and Sanitation, andMagalies Water in refurbishing the waterpurification plant, to ensure that the

drinking water quality in the area improves.He told The BEAT that the municipality

will continue to implement tight waterrestrictions, and water cuts will be appliedin all areas at specified times to reducestrain on the main supply system.“We are still pleading with members of

the community to use water sparingly.Those who are running car wash businessare also urged to use water with extracaution. Water leakages must also bereported immediately, and if faults are onthe consumer’s side, we are advising themto find an authorised way of fixing them,”he said.

Escalators needed for upper level centre shops Justin Steyn

A number of shops opened on the lowerlevel of the Pick ‘n Pay Bushveld centrein November last year, while its secondfloor remains mainly empty with only afew shops at its entrance.

Upgrades to the centre were completed

in July of 2015 and it now boasts a secondstorey which is planned be home to at leastthirteen shops.

The centre’s lower level now hosts a newPep store, extended PNA, a larger Shoe cityand a new coffee shop named CaféHaarhoff.

The centre’s leasing agent, Anton Killian,told The BEAT that the shops at the upper

level have remained vacant awaiting thearrival of an escalator to the area.“We have ordered an escalator for the

centre and the shops will only be occupiedonce they have been installed and declaredoperational,” he said in a telephoneconversation.When asked if any of the planned new

shops such as Steers and Panasonic will be

part of the centre, Killian said that he willhave to verify this with his head office.In July last year Killian said that not all

of the shops that were planned to openwill do so at the centre.According to Killian a gym was planned

to be housed at the centre, but later pulledout because the owners were not happywith where they would be located.

Julius Malema, formerly known as the head of the EFFpolitical party, has declared himself King of South Africa.

His Serene Majesty Julius I said in a statement that plansfor his coronation on 29 February 2017 are proceeding well.

“Of course it will be a very big affair,” King Julius said. “Iplan to ride down Church Street on an elephant. There willbe a parade and a spectacle so that all my subjects mayadmire me.” King Julius also plans to distribute free R100

coins stamped with his likeness duringthe event.

He expressed his hope that SouthAfricans across the country will

embrace the new monarchy and helphim in his effort to throw off the

shackles of democracy.“I believe that this is the best

possible move for the country as awhole. We need a united, strongleadership which is not chained

to political agendas and canmove strongly to take SouthAfrica into a shining newfuture!”

Waterberg and Capricorn District Schoolsteams are waiting for school to reopen onMonday 4 May to join the third team in theregional Championship of the DanoneNation Cup.

Limpopo province is nearing thecompletion of their regional finals inpreparation for the provincial finals, to bestaged at Noorderland Primary School inPolokwane on 30 April.

Soccer fanatics were treated to a day of funin the sun during Bela-Bela’s annual EasterGames.

Lehlabile beat Leseding 4-1 in the firstround. Leseding took their loss out onMingaz Car Wash team, who received a 3-2loss from the sore losers. Leseding then lost5-4 on penalties to Lehlabile, who went onto claim first place.

According to the games’ coordinatorTshepo Phoffu, the day went very well.

“We weren’t able to get a lot of sponsorson board but we are planning to engage afew so that all the teams who participatedcan get medals,” he said. The winning teamis to receive a roving cup.

“It’s always a good feeling to see formerplayers taking part in these games whenthey are home for Easter,” he said.

will be playing in the provincial finals for thethird time. They previously competed in the2013 and 2015 winning the provincial titleboth times, but not managing to win thenationals. They are hoping that this will betheir year to be the first team to representLimpopo in the world finals.

During a media briefing, the coach RichardSidebi said that their school is a sportsacademy so they go out and recruit the bestplayers they can.

“The challenge, however, is to get theparents of talented youngsters to agree tosend their sons to the school. There’s afeeling that soccer is a short-term career andit is not guaranteed that the children willmake it, so they are often reluctant to allow

their kids to even try,” he said.“This is the first time that Sekakate Primary

School has qualified for the provincial finals,which is a great achievement for a ruralschool where the kids rely on the schoolfeeding scheme to get a solid meal everyday,” said coach Douglas Magabane.At the provincial finals, their biggest

challenge will probably come from Benny’sSport where the players have bettercoaching, facilities and equipment.However, they have some skilled players

this year and plan to give Benny’s a run fortheir money.“There’s a chance that Benny’s will spot a

player or two and scout them, which wouldbe a good thing because it would be anopportunity for them to better their lives,”said Magabane.
