Term 3 - Week 2 Wednesday 31 July, 2019

Calendar - Term 3 - 2019

From the Principal’s Desk Welcome back! I think term 3 is one of my favourite times of the school year. Everything is running smoothly and it is an exciting term with the events that are scheduled. Major events include:

• Boys and girls touch football State Knock outs.

• Stage Two Choral Festival • Stage Three Southern Stars • Education Week including Open Day on

Friday 9 August. • Brokers Athletics • School Starters Playgroup • Father’s Day stall ( thanks P and C) • Book Week including a performance “Big

(thanks P and C) • ICAS tests for those students who wish to for

English and Maths • Colour Run (thanks P and C) • Stage Three to Canberra

These events would not be possible without staff and community who are willing to go above and beyond to give our students opportunities. Thank you to the leaders of each initiative and also a thanks to the team of staff and community who, behind the scenes make sure that these things can happen. Each time a teacher organises an event, there is a knock on effect where others have to cover duties, supervise extra students and rearrange so that all of our students are safe and learning. Teaching instruments. Quality Teaching Rounds are designed to support teachers in negotiating diverse views about what matters in teaching and learning in a collaborative environment.

QTR involves four or more teachers working together to observe and analyse lessons in each other’s classroom. As teachers observe and discuss teaching in a non-confrontational environment, they become more aware of their strengths and what they can improve to help their students learn.

This process is led by the University of Newcastle and has had significant effect on teaching and learning. Our staff are all involved (including myself) in this rigorous and academic process. I commend our staff in all being involved. We hope that through this process to improve the understanding of the Quality Teaching Framework, be more analytical in lesson feedback based on evidence, deepen the quality of our conversation around teaching and learning and positively impact on our students. QT provides a framework from which to commence important conversations not only about the specific lesson observed but also about teaching in general. Our students can only benefit by the collective efficacy of our teachers. During Education week it is time to stop and reflect what Balgownie, as part of the Public Education System of NSW delivers every day to all students: • World class education programs. The public

education system sets the direction and standard for education across NSW for everyone.

• Quality teaching. Highly educated, skilled and dedicated workforce.

• Responsive and flexible education. Broad and relevant educational programs meeting student and community needs.

• Values, care and citizenship. Safe and nurturing learning environments that develop respect, understanding and responsibility. Public education provides a well-rounded education that values and supports the intellectual, creative, physical, social and emotional development of every child.

• Choice and diversity. A broad range of opportunities catering for individual needs and interests.

• Opportunities for all. Environments where all students, regardless of background, can

realise their full potential. • Local and accountable. Meets local needs

and statewide standards. • Competitive. By any standard our results are

outstanding. Balgownie Public is proud to be part of a system that plans and delivers quality education for every student in our school, both in the classroom and in the broader life of our school. Happy Education Week!! A reminder to parents to notify the school about your child’s health We welcome information from parents about your child's health, even if you are not requesting specific support from our school. Our school asks for medical information when you enrol your child. It is also important that you let us know if your child’s health care needs change or if a new health condition develops. Information about allergies, medical conditions such as asthma and diabetes and other health care related issues (including prior conditions such as medical procedures in the last 12 months) should be provided to the school by parents. Please provide this information in writing to the principal. This will greatly assist our school in planning to support your child’s health and wellbeing. If your child has asthma or anaphylactic reactions, it is your responsibility to update your child’s medical plan and medications. Please also remember to notify staff in the school office of any changes to your contact details or to the contact details of other people nominated as emergency contacts. What to do if you are concerned. Our school is committed to maintaining a safe and happy environment for students, staff, parents and the broader community. We encourage parents and carers to advocate on their child’s behalf and, as part of this, expect them to raise concerns about their child. Sometimes these concerns may relate to the way a child may have been treated by another student at this school. It is natural for parents and carers to feel protective of their children. However you must not raise any concerns you have about the behaviour of another child directly with that child (or his or her parents while they are at school) but should instead report your concerns to the principal or a member of the executive team. Your concerns will be taken seriously and responded to promptly. If a parent, carer or other community member raises their concerns directly with a child (or their

parents while they are at school) this may result in the access that person has to the school site being restricted or withdrawn. We greatly value the contribution parents, carers and other community members make to the school community and do not wish to take any action that impacts on their participation in school activities. Please let us know if you have concerns about the behaviour of another person’s child while they are at school or on school related activities. Playgroup is underway

Thanks to Miriam Galvani, our parent led playgroup will be on again this year! It is wonderful to be part of a community who contribute to our children. In Term 3, the playgroup will be down at James Pearson Park. The dates for Term 3 playgroup are: Wednesday 14 August Wednesday 28 August Wednesday 11 September Wednesday 25 September The playgroup will then be on each Wednesday in Term 4 from 8 October to 26 November. We are lucky enough to have a list of applications for enrolments for Kindergarten. It will be easier to make plans for 2020 if we know how many local enrolments we have. If you know of anyone, or are a parent of a child beginning school next year, please apply to enrol.

Education Week Balgownie Public School will be celebrating Education Week on Friday 9th August. Classrooms will be open from 10-11.00am, followed by a picnic lunch. Families are welcome to visit during this time as we celebrate learning in our public education system. A coffee van will also be available at lunch time. We look forward to seeing you on this special day. Additionally the school museum will be open from 10.30-1.00pm.

Sports News Congratulations to our girls and boys touch football teams who have done Balgownie proud once again by winning their recently played games. The boys played Bowral and won 10-3 and the girls played Corrimal East and won 7-4. Well done!!! Talented Sports & Development Program Second Trial Information On Wednesday August 14th, Illawarra Sports High School will be holding the second Talented Sport Program Trials. Waste Free Wednesdays Balgownie Public School will be starting a ‘Waste Free Wednesdays’. The schools’ Environmental Leaders thought that this was a great idea after we conducted a Waste Audit in Term 1. We realised that we throw away a huge amount of non-recyclable plastics each day. Over the course of a week, a term and a school year this is equivalent to tonnes of land fill. We can make a difference and it’s pretty easy too. Every Wednesday, every week don’t bring any plastics or pre-packaged foods to school for the day. Instead use containers like lunch boxes for your food and snacks. If you do bring pre-packed food

to school, simply take your rubbish home and put it in your bin. This will reduce the amount of waste here at school and who knows, it may change your behaviour every day and lead to families saving money. Compulsory Educational Fees Please note any outstanding Educational Fees need to be paid now, this is an annual fee of $30 per student. These fees are for subscriptions, IPad apps, Reading Eggs, etc. and are charged on a per-student basis. These items are used at school to develop your child’s learning through Technology. This fee must be paid before any extracurricular activities are undertaken. SOUTHERN STARS COMES ALIVE IN 2019 – Tickets on sale! Last week Southern Stars 2019 COME ALIVE was officially launched at the BlueScope Visitors Centre in Wollongong, where Executive Producer, Paul Roger, announced the theme, and that tickets were officially on sale to the public. The show once again will have something for everyone. The theme and show segments are all based around how students come alive when they perform. It’s the biggest show in the history of Southern Stars with over 3,000 students from over 100 schools in the Illawarra and around NSW. The students will take part in a world-class two hour arena style variety show that will feature pop, country, rock, and opera. As in past years, community support of Southern Stars is vital to ensure its success, and the easiest way of showing your support is by attending one of the four blockbuster shows. Over 12,000 people are expected to attend the four performances at the WIN Entertainment Centre in Wollongong on Friday August 31 (10am and 7.30pm) and Saturday September 1 (2pm and 7.30pm) - make sure you are one of them! Please note that tickets should be purchased only through the official ticket booking site of Ticketmaster. http://ticketmaster.com.au

Balgownie Public School P & C 2019 Colour Run Meeting ALL MEMBERS OF OUR SCHOOL COMMUNITY ARE INVITED TO ATTEND OUR FIRST COLOUR RUN MEETING TO BE HELD AT:

• Collegians Balgownie • Sunday 4th August at 12 noon

Come join us for a drink or lunch to hear about what the P&C Colour Run committee has planned for our inaugural Colour Run Fundraiser! A reminder that as the second Wednesday of July falls in the school holidays, the next P&C meeting will be on Wednesday 14th August, 7:15pm in the school library. Double Deal - Helping your school & the environment! You probably know about Return & Earn? What you may not know is that you can contribute Return & Earn money to Balgownie Public School! Return & Earn works for those small single serve plastic bottles (eg. gatorade), cans or glass bottles. Milk cartons or big juice cartons etc are not accepted. You can recycle them in your yellow bin at home. Where is Return & Earn located? The automatic deposit machine is located at the back of the Fraternity Club in Fairy Meadow. When you get to the Return & Earn collection point, simply scan the barcode below and start feeding your bottles down the chute. This money is then sent to the P & C's PayPal account which will help us raise money throughout the year. Every little bit helps and your children are always the recipients of material bought with the money raised for the school. Of course recycling in any way is better than it going to landfill, so you can involve your children in Return & Earn where they can earn some pocket money, or you can choose to donate it to one of the charities or organisations listed. Happy bottle & can collecting!

2019-2020 Entertainment Book Memberships There were over 80 families who purchased digital or book memberships last year and have enjoyed their savings and fun experiences using the fabulous vouchers (which are still valid in the current edition until June 1st). If you would like to continue getting huge discounts on your groceries, petrol, eating out and kids holiday activities then please buy the new membership and support our school! It costs $60 and contains hundreds of local restaurants, cafes, shopping and entertainment vouchers. Every membership sold raises $12 for our school, which buys educational resources and other items to create a wonderful learning environment for our children. Order forms have been sent home to kindergarten families, but the easiest way to preview the vouchers or place an order is online www.entertainmentbook.com.au/orderbooks/280m215k

Healthy Lunch Box! For back to school term 3, CCNSW is running a campaign promoting our Healthy Lunch Box website healthylunchbox.com.au to help inspire and assist parents to keep packing healthy lunch boxes throughout the year. On the website parents will find snack ideas, sandwich alternatives, recipes, tips and easy healthy swaps for those common lunch box items that are not the best for our kids. Parents can also get their kids involved in choosing lunch box foods they will actually eat and enjoy using the interactive Healthy Lunch Box builder. In a recent review by Flinders University in Adelaide, Healthy Lunch Box rated highest when compared with other lunch box apps and websites (https://www.saxinstitute.org.au/publications/22904/). This reflects the websites high level of functionality, quality of information and design. What’s New For term 3 we have the following new seasonal recipes:

• Vegie pasta soup

• Turkey, apple & avocado crepe

• Vegetable pasta bake

• Vegetable dumplings

• Mexican baked sweet potato

• Yoghurt rice pudding

Dear parents, guardians and carers

Re: Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD)

Every year, all schools in Australia participate in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD). The NCCD process requires schools to identify information already available in the school about supports provided to students with disability. These relate to legislative requirements under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Disability Standards for Education 2005, in line with the NCCD guidelines (2019).

Information provided about students to the Australian Government for the NCCD includes: • year of schooling • category of disability: physical, cognitive, sensory or social/emotional • level of adjustment provided: support provided within quality differentiated teaching practice,

supplementary, substantial or extensive.

This information assists schools to: • formally recognise the supports and adjustments provided to students with disability in schools • consider how they can strengthen the support of students with disability in schools • develop shared practices so that they can review their learning programs in order to improve educational

outcomes for students with disability.

The NCCD provides state and federal governments with the information they need to plan more broadly for the support of students with disability.

The NCCD will have no direct impact on your child and your child will not be involved in any testing process. The school will provide data to the Australian Government in such a way that no individual student will be able to be identified – the privacy and confidentiality of all students is ensured. All information is protected by privacy laws that regulate the collection, storage and disclosure of personal information. To find out more about these matters, please refer to the Australian Government’s Privacy Policy (https://www.education.gov.au/privacy-policy).

Further information about the NCCD can be found on the NCCD Portal (https://www.nccd.edu.au).

If you have any questions about the NCCD, please contact the school.

Kind regards

Principal
