The Pastor’s Message Sisters and brothers, Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers of our parish! Today we take pause to remember all that our mothers have done for us, and to express our gratitude and love – with flowers, chocolates, gift certificates for facials and pedicures, and, of course, fixing a meal for her, or taking her out to dinner. Let us also remember to pray for our mothers, living and deceased. In the American Bishops’ book, Household Blessings and Prayers, there is a suggested table blessing to be used on this day. It is: Loving God, as a mother gives life and nourishment to her children, so you watch over your Church. Bless our mother. Let the example of her faith and love shine forth. Grant that we, her family, may honor her always with a spirit of profound respect. Bless us, O Lord, and these your gifts which we are about to receive from your bounty. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. Many, many thanks to everyone who showed up last Saturday morning to give the church a good, deep cleaning. Scraping gum off the bottom of the pews (shame on you gum chewers!), cleaning windows, floors, dusting, washing, in every nook and cranny. It took several hours, but the church sure did sparkle afterwards. It’s great to know that so many folks care about and want to keep our beautiful church shiny and beautiful. Thanks to all who helped out. Today we celebrate the Feast of the Ascension of our Lord. The end of today’s Gospel reveals some of the mystery of this feast. The next to last sentence tells us that Jesus is now in heaven, seated at the right hand of God. But the following sentence tells us that Jesus continued working with his disciples here on earth. The feast of the Ascension tells us that Jesus is now with the Father. The joy of this mystery is that, where the Father is, there is Jesus. And because the Father is everywhere, we know that Jesus, while at the right hand of the Father, is also at our right hand, always walking at our side. Jesus, who once walked the dusty roads of Palestine, now walks the streets of Frankfort and the roads of Clinton County. He walks at our side always. He will never leave us. This of course also points to next week’s feast of Pentecost, when we celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit upon and within the disciples. The joy of Pentecost is that Jesus not only walks at our side, he actually lives within us. His Spirit dwells inside of us,

breathing into us Life, and Grace, and Love beyond telling. If, of course, we live open to that Spirit. Jesus, with his life, death, resurrection, ascension, and sending of his Spirit, removes the separation between heaven and earth. Jesus’ ascension is not to a different place, but rather to a different way of being. Heaven is not somewhere, but, more, somehow, a living in open, loving relationship with God, and, with all that is. Which is to say that “heaven” is not “out there”, somewhere out in space. Heaven is as near as the most gentle breath, the Breath of God, the Breath of the Spirit. To have that Spirit within us, filling us with Life and Light and Love – this is to Be, to be fully alive, to be fully aware that “heaven” is right here and right now, that the Father and the Son are not only at our right hand, they dwell within us. It is to be in the most intimate communion with God, with the saints and angels, with all that is. Jesus has opened the gates of heaven by ascending to the Father. He pours heaven into us, by his gift of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost. This is the mystery that we celebrate today. This is the mystery that we open ourselves to next Sunday. “Why are you standing there looking at the sky?”, the angels asked the disciples after the ascension of Jesus. I imagine them asking us the same question. If we are looking for Jesus somewhere else, if we are waiting for heaven after death, then we have missed the point. Jesus is not “somewhere else”. He is with us. He lives within those of us who believe. And heaven, well heaven is only ever a “breath” away. During this coming week, let us open ourselves to that Breath, that Breath of Jesus, that mighty Wind of the Holy Spirit. Let us allow the Spirit to enter more fully into our lives every day, removing every obstacle from our union with God, removing every fear, everything that is not holy, removing the scales from our eyes to see Who is at our right hand, filling us with the love of the Father and the risen life of Christ. May the Spirit of the risen Christ fill each of you, and flow through you, giving Life to all you meet. With peace and prayers, Fr. Chris

Building Fund – Second Collection – May 19-20 Next weekend, there will be second collection to support the repair work to the HVAC water piping under our church. There’s over 750 feet of 3”, heavy, type L copper piping that has to be re-placed, along with a lot of fittings, cutting, solder-

ing. The work is progressing, a bit slow, but steady. All the pipe has to be cut in short pieces, and the workers have to crawl on their stomachs through the very narrow tunnels to do their work. The church will be without heat or air-conditioning the rest of May. Please be generous as you can to our Build-ing Fund so we can complete this final part of the renovation of the heating and air-conditioning system of our church.
