Opportunities for Nov. 14th - Nov. 24th , 2018

Not that anyone asked for it, but

here’s an idea to consider as a

2019 discipleship project. Since

everything seems to have an

acronym nowadays, I’ll call it

MUFP or the Making Unlikely

Friends Project.

As any American with a heartbeat

knows, division is a demon on the

loose in our society. I’ve preached

about it about as bluntly as I

know how. (Not that this church

is in trouble or that every

business meeting is a pitched

battle. Thankfully, not!) But in

our neighborhoods, our city, and

our society distancing, if not

hostility, stalks us. In many ways

the “United” States of America is

more a name than a reality as we

enter 2019.

As disciples of the Prince of Peace

our challenge and opportunity is

to be peace-makers. To me that

begins with knowing and talking

to one another rather than

withdrawing from and firing

accusations against one another.

So, how about intentionally

making some unlikely friends this

coming year? Reaching out to

share a cup of coffee or some

lunch dates and conversations

with persons who are different

from you? That difference could

be political. Or it could be

theological. Or it could be racial,

cultural, educational, economic

or any of the dozen silos that

have us trapped.

The point is to befriend or re-

friend someone whose worldview

or opinions you don’t share. The

object isn’t to show them the

error of their ways; the object is

to listen, to understand, to

demonstrate interest, to reveal

who you are and why, to discover

common ground—to make an

unlikely friend.

“Witnessing” has traditionally

meant telling someone about

Jesus. It still is. But is there any-

thing wrong with enlarging the

scope of witnessing to include

showing Jesus’ interest in people,

all kinds of people, and being an

intentional seeker of relation-

ships? “The salt of the earth” has

to get out of the shaker to do any

good. Surely, making an unlikely

friend can’t be that far from the

Kingdom, can it?

So very much good can be

accomplished when we work on

being “us.” One example of this

came to me last week from Bill

Stillerman of the Baptist Retire-

ment Homes of NC. It was a thank

you letter for a recently received

gift from this church. He closed

by saying that Clayton’s gift,

joined with other NC Baptists’

gifts, meant that more than $3.5

million were provided last year to

this state’s “poor elderly,” folks

who can’t afford residence in one

of the BRH facilities. That’s a lot

of care! It indicates what can be

done when folks work together

rather than hunker down in

separate silos.

Here’s my vote for MUFP for

2019! dd

In Our Prayers...

Teresa Breeden is at LifeCare, 1051 Noell Drive, Rocky Mount, NC 27804 (252) 451-2333. Please pray that Teresa would feel God’s grace, love and strength surrounding her. Visitors are welcome.

Horace Cox is in Springbrook, room 206. Please pray for recovery and strength for Horace.

Laura Lee Pittman is at Springbrook, room 508. Please pray that she will recover quickly from the broken humerus bone and the bulging disc in her back. Please pray for strength and a good rehab.

Jenny Coats is at Springbrook following her bypass surgery. Please pray that her rehab and recovery go well without any complications. Please pray for strength for Jenny and Thomas as he ministers to Jenny. At this time, the family is asking that there not be any visitors.

Rudy Oliver is home recovering from cornea transplant surgery. Please pray that Rudy’s recovery would be quick and without complications.

Please continue to pray faithfully for our Pastor Search Committee:

Missions…

Jo Anne Norris is part of a 6 member Baptist Women’s Mission Team that left for Cuba on November 10th and will be returning home on the 17th of November.

Please pray as Jo Anne and the team minister to the Cuban people that they are a blessing to them and to our Lord and Savior. Please also pray for traveling safety.

A very familiar passage that is quoted

around Thanksgiving is Psalm 100:4 NIV - Enter His gates with thanksgiving, and His

courts with praise; give thanks to Him and praise His name.”

The gates and courtyard symbolized the idea of meeting with

God.

May we offer thanks to God for His many blessings to us all

through the year. Count your blessings, name them one by one.

We do not need to only do this at Thanksgiving, but daily all

through the year. It is a wonderful blessing for Phil and me to

fellowship with FBC all through the year. God bless you in this

holiday season.

Phyllis

NBC - Monthly Senior’s Program

with Kyle Stephenson

Our Senior Adults will meet on Monday, November 26th at 11:30

am in the Fellowship Hall.

We are pleased to have the talented Kyle Stephenson return to

play a wide variety of music on the piano for our enjoyment.

Kyle is the son-in-law of Sally Bierce.

Plan now to bring a covered dish and a friend.

WINTER IS COMING... For many of us the cool days of autumn are a welcomed relief from the heat of summer. Probably all of us have a warm home and a coat hanging in the closet to ward off the cold days and nights that we know will soon follow. But there are those that have good reason to dread the cold days ahead. As hard as it is to believe, there are those not too far from our own homes that do not have a home, do not have a warm coat, do not have a hat or gloves or warm socks. I am so grateful that there are shelters in place, such as the Wilmington Street Shelter for Men, where our church has served for many years, that try to meet the needs of area homeless men.

FBC is once again giving you an opportunity to provide gloves, hats, and warm socks for the men of this shelter and for the homeless that are here in Clayton as well. Your donation of $10.00 will cover the costs of outfitting one person. Please prayerfully consider supporting this ministry. Our goal this year is to provide for 200 men and women. Donations should be made through the church office and marked WARM WINTER 2018.

~Anne Abene

Please join us on Sunday evening, November 18th at 5:00 pm. The church will provide the turkey, ham and dressing. Church family, please bring a side dish and a dessert.

We hope you will be able to attend. If you have out of town guests visiting that weekend, please bring them with you.

Any senior adult who needs a ride because they cannot drive at night, please call the church office at 919-553-4161 by noon on Friday, November 16th!

THE OUTLOOK WILL NOT BE PUBLISHED

THE WEEK OF THANKSGIVING.

THE CHURCH OFFICE WILL BE CLOSED ON FRIDAY, NOV. 23

Thank you…

Ben and Sharon Clifton would like to thank each and every one of you who sent cards, food, gifts and prayers to us during Ben's surgery and recovery. He is doing great and does not need to do out-patient rehab. He is doing everything the doctor ordered and should be driving in a couple of weeks.

It is such a joy to be a part of a loving and caring church and we certainly enjoy your thoughts and concerns. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Ben and Sharon Clifton

"Christmas for Cooper" Tree

The Frances Carroll WMU group has partnered with Cooper Academy again this year to provide Christmas gifts to students in

need as a mission focus.

The "Christmas for Cooper" tree will be located in the side vestibule and will have "ornaments" with Christmas wish list items from Cooper students. Due to the overwhelming response from our church last year to support 10 students, this year, we will be providing for 15 students. The tree will be up on Sunday, November 25, and we ask that you place unwrapped gift(s) with the "ornaments" attached in the box outside the church office no later than Sunday December 9.

You can also donate towards a larger item or make a donation towards unpurchased gifts with an online contribution.

We appreciate your support!

Come help us serve the needy in our community as we

provide a meal and meaningful fellowship!

“What we do by ourselves matters;

What we do together, really makes the difference. When we give, we get back!”

First Baptist Church will be providing the Living Nativity again this year as part of the 2018 Town of Clayton Christmas Village and Tree Lighting on Thursday, November 29th. The Missions Council would like assistance setting up the stable for this special event.

If you are able to help, please meet at the church at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 29th. Following this event, we will need a group to assist in moving and setting the scene back at church. Plan to meet at 7:30 am on December 1st for breakfast at Jones’ followed by moving the equipment.

Wednesday, November 21st / 5-7:00 pm / Fellowship Hall

A Note from the Pastor Search Committee

We have updated our "Pastor-Search Process" poster in the vestibule next to Choir Room to reflect the following:

2.1 - The Congregation survey was completed and results reported to the congregation.

2.2 - The Pastor Search Committee does not recommend further study of Denominational relationships or other issues.

2.3 - The Senior Pastor profile has been developed based on survey responses, comments and discussions with members requesting to be contacted.

2.7 - Our committee has made the decision to accept Senior Pastor applications and resumes online only. We are currently developing this process in addition to gathering information listed in Stage Two of our process.

In addition, our current plan is to begin advertising and accepting applications in early January 2019.

We encourage you to contact any member of our committee if you have questions, suggestions or concerns. Thank you for your continued prayer.
