Play Hard!

We’ll be here where you’re done.

Historic aircraft are ondisplay both Saturday and Sunday, but thecrowds are thinner on Sunday. This gives youmore of an opportunity for discussion withaircraft pilots and owners. And when planes aredeparting on Sunday, they may buzz the fieldbefore turning their noses toward home.

It gets hot on that tarmac,so bring a hat and water. Seating is available onsite, but packing a portable chair is a nice extra ifyou want to rest closer to the action.

Planes startarriving early, even a day or two,

before the event. So be watchingthe skies for some of the specialaircraft as they come in for theevent… as you may get a little airshow!

Planning to attend Warbird Weekend,Saturday and Sunday, July 12-13?

Here are a few tips to get as much out of thistwo-day event as possible.

Hey, take some cash asthere are souvenirs to buy, as well as food isavailable.

Young Eagles freeflights for kids (ages 8-17) areextremely popular, and the number of flightsdepends on the volunteer planes that show up.So your best chance to get a flight is being onsite bright and early.

Give the young kids abreak on the National Guard obstacle

course; burn off some of that excess energy soyou can get back to the exhibits.

These events are greatfor hearing stories. Find agroup and eavesdrop. Veterans love talkingabout their aviation tales, and the pilots loveshowing off their planes.

Can you touch? Check thesigns on what you can touch or not, and whereyou can grab and step. These are historicplanes, so some are definitely “eyes only” forthe exhibit. Unsure? Ask the pilot.

The tours are reallycool. Everyone who goes through theAnderson Aeromotive tour really says howmuch they enjoyed it, so do it! Also, right thereis the USFS smokejumper facility … and didwe tell you this is where smokejumping firstgot its start – on the Nez Perce National Forest, back in 1940? Yep, right here in Grangeville, soit’s definitely worth checking out.

Taking the museumtour on Saturday gets you out of

the heat, so check out the movie (it’s prettygood). And the museum has some greatexhibits on area history.

Local businesses andorganizations work hardto help put this event on, so let them know youappreciate their support for this fun (and free!)community activity.

Since 1951, the Grangeville Smokejumpershave provided aerially delivered firefighters towildfires across the United States.Smokejumpers specialize in the use ofparachutes and fixed-wing aircraft as a meansfor rapid deployment of resources to remotelocations. While smokejumping and firemanagement is their specialty, the jumpers

have a wide range of skills and backgroundsthat offer a diverse and highly adaptableorganization that can fill any niche. Smokejumping was born on the Nez Perce

National Forest. It was on the Nez PerceForest's Moose Creek Ranger District thatRufus Robinson, of Kooskia, Idaho and EarlCooley, of Hamilton, Mont., made the nation's

first "live" fire jump, at the Martin Creek Fireon July 12, 1940. Robinson's and Cooley'ssquad had been positioned by the Region OneSmokejumper Program at the remote MooseCreek Ranger Station, where a parachute loftwas built in 1941 to better accommodatesmokejumper operations in this vicinity.
