April 2019 Dear Parents/Carers, As always, there is so much going on within school as you will see from this newsletter. Our student leadership team have been particularly busy of late showing amazing team work and school spirit as they effect positive change within the school and raise money for charity. Our two Head Girls even attended the latest Governors’ meeting last week, wowing all present with their presentation and more importantly showing an incredible attitude to their peers, teachers and the school. Well done team! In the final few weeks leading up to the exams, year 11 students are being issued with their own magazine called ‘The Final Countdown’ to help them through this challenging time including: advice; top tips; revision guidance; important dates; careers and further education advice. There’s also a section where teachers can congratulate the students on their attitudes, progress and level of effort. If you fancy a peak please see our school website. On a more serious note, I mentioned two important updates in my last newsletter regarding mobile phones and chewing gum, for which I have summed up key points below for your information. In addition to this there is a brief update about ‘ParentPay’ at the end of the newsletter for which there are also full details on our website. Please note our next ‘Parent Voice’ meeting is at school on Wednesday 19 th June 2019 at 4.00pm; all parents and carers are welcome to attend and we will send out a reminder next term. For further information in the meantime, please contact Mr Thompson at school. The last day for students this term is Friday 5 th April with school reopening at 8:50am on Tuesday 23 rd April. We wish all students and their families a wonderful Easter break! Thank you for your ongoing support. Yours sincerely, Andrea Radcliffe Headteacher A polite reminder about mobile phones in school Mobile phones must be switched off and kept in a bag (not a pocket) for the full duration of the school day including break and lunchtime. Any phone seen in school will be confiscated and a parent/carer may need to come in after school to collect it. If a pupil refuses to hand over their phone immediately and without argument, a parent/carer will need to come into school for a meeting. Pupils needing to contact parents during the day can do so via Student Services. Parents needing to communicate urgent messages to their child can do so by calling Reception. A polite reminder about chewing gum Just a reminder that chewing gum is banned in school – I’m sure that anyone who has ever had any stuck on their shoe/clothing will understand why. Any pupil caught chewing or in possession of chewing gum will be kept after school to carry out community service which may include litter picking or carrying out a task which makes a positive contribution to our school. THANK YOU FOR YOUR ONGOING SUPPORT!

Dear Parents/Carers,

As always, there is so much going on within school as you will see from this newsletter. Our student leadership team have been particularly busy of late showing amazing team work and school spirit as they effect positive change within the school and raise money for charity. A polite reminder about mobile phones in school

Mobile phones must be switched off and kept in a bag (not a pocket) for the full duration of the school day including break and lunchtime.

A polite reminder about chewing gum

Just a reminder that chewing gum is banned in school – I’m sure that anyone who has ever had any stuck on their shoe/clothing will understand why. Any pupil caught chewing or in possession of chewing gum will be kept after school to carry out community service which may include litter picking or carrying out a task which makes a positive contribution to our school.

Student Leadership News We ran a ‘Selfie Frame’ to

raise money for Comic Relief. Students and staff could pose in silly hats and wigs and have

a photo emailed to them. Lots of people joined in the fun

including our Headteacher!

GCSE Art Students

In February several of our KS4 art students joined a live online ‘life drawing class’

broadcast by the Royal Academy in London from their historic ‘life room’.

From their own homes, students were able to have the same life drawing environment as past masters such as William Blake and

JMW Turner. The live class attracts tens of thousands of artists world-wide to draw together. Our

students will have been amongst the youngest to join and the results they produced are mature and stunning.

What a privilege to teach such talented young people! Mrs Wrigley.

Your child has access to a service called

‘GCSE Pod’ which provides hundreds of professionally produced mini-lessons in the

form of short videos called ‘pods’. They contain all your child needs for GCSE

success. Mrs Mallon

Fancy going to Disneyland? We still have places for our amazing trip to

It has been another busy term in the Music Department with Y11 GCSE and BTEC coursework deadlines looming! The department has seen a big increase in the number of students signing-up to instrument lessons (11% of the school now have lessons). If your child would like instrument lessons whilst at Hyde please email [email protected]. It has been pleasing to see 14% of the current Y9s opting for music next year; double the national average! All students who opted for GCSE and BTEC music will now receive fully funded instrumental lessons from next half term and should check their lesson times with Mr Anthony. New Revolution continues to represent the school brilliantly across the region. Aiden J (Yr8), Matthew S (Yr8), Zak H (Y9) and Ben R (Y10) are going from strength to strength writing, performing and recording their own music.

Hyde CC Records This term the music department has launched a new record label called ‘Hyde CC Records.’ Students can now arrange a time with Mr Anthony or Mr Garlick to record and release their own music. The record label is already proving popular with students (and staff)! Latest releases can be heard by searching ‘Hyde CC Records’ on YouTube.

Badges of Excellence Students continue to work hard to collect ‘excellence stickers’ in music. Once students have collected stickers for excellent: behaviour; effort; performance; homework and presentation a ‘badge of excellence’ is awarded. The badge allows students access to practice rooms during lunch times and an invitation to have access to our annual music trip to London. The music department would like to thank the following students who have been awarded with their badges this term:

Supporting Your Child During Exam Time (Young Minds)

As we start to move towards exam season, Young Minds have launched advice for parents about supporting their children.

Tips include:

Encourage your child to take revision breaks and find a balance between studying and doing things they find enjoyable and relaxing.

Make sure they are eating and drinking at regular intervals.

Reassure them – reinforce that you are and will be proud of them no matter what happens.

Remain positive and hopeful!

Let them know their feelings are valid and normal, but also offer support and solutions where possible.

Anxiety is often worst at night and this means it is useful to encourage good bedtime routine
