This week’s Gospel reading provides an appropriate transition from the end of one liturgical
year to the beginning of a new one. We are alerted to Jesus’ second advent, when he will return
from heaven to claim his own. We are encouraged to “look up,” “raise your heads,” “take heed,”
“watch,” and pray, for his second coming will be as real and redemptive as was his first. We are
encouraged not simply to wait but to wait actively.
With all the upheavals in the world at present, it is natural for us to wonder if we are
witnessing the signs to which Jesus referred – the “wars and rumours of war”, the “distress of
nations in perplexity”, the “fear and foreboding of what is coming to the world”. Are these the
signs of the end-times? Is Jesus’ second coming imminent?
It is not for us to know the time – that is known by God alone. People in 1939 and the early
1940s may well have seen the upheavals in their world as a prelude to the second coming of
Christ. That was not the time. Is it now? It is not for us to know.
Our calling is to wait, to prepare, to be ready. We are to be joyful in anticipation. ‘Joyful
Anticipation’ is the catch phrase that will link us back to Jesus’ first coming, as we prepare with
joy to celebrate Christ-mass.
As part of that preparation, may we pray, as St Paul directs us: “May the Lord make us
increase and abound in love to one another and to all people”.

Have you heard of a Travelling Book ?
A Travelling Book belongs to no-one. It moves from person to person being read, then passed on . The parish has bought 3 copies of Laudato Si, the pope’s encyclical, Care of our Common Home. These will become Travelling Books. They will start their journey soon. You might be given one .You will know it because it will have a notice on it . Read it and pass it on. Keep the journey going!
