Many people think of prophets as fortune-tellers who predict the future. In reality, they are much more like social critics or op-ed writers. They challenge political and religious leaders and their people to do what God wants them to do. They frequently attack political and economic elites for not taking care of the poor. They even criticize foreign entanglements and wars. And they frequent-ly do it with harsh words.

Isaiah spoke in this tradition. In last Sunday's reading (Isaiah's 58: 7-10), he has the Lord telling the people and their leaders, "Share your bread with the hungry, shelter the oppressed and the home-less; clothe the naked ... ."

Despite this exhortation thousands of Australian households are food insecure; thousands are homeless; and rather than wel-coming to the "oppressed" we lock up those seeking asylum and refuge in off shore detention centres.

Isaiah goes on to say, "remove from your midst oppression, false accusation and malicious speech." Racism, sexism and homopho-bia still oppress whole categories of people. And as for "false ac-cusation and malicious speech," good luck on that one in our cur-rent political climate.

The teaching of the prophets and the gospels is summed up for Christians in the seven corporal works of mercy: Feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked, shelter the homeless, visit the sick, visit the imprisoned and bury the dead.

Many preachers focus on these as individual or church responsibil-ities. That is true, for "They will know that you are Christians by your love."

But the prophets also spoke to political leaders. Taking care of the hungry, the homeless, the oppressed, is not just an individual

As a Catholic Community we respect the Wurrundjeri people, traditional custodians of the land upon which our parish resides, and commit ourselves to reconciliation and justice for all in our community and nation.

Inclusiveness Hospitality Service Mission

Prophets are social critics not fortune-tellers One of the challenges of preachers is that they must preach each Sunday on the Scripture readings in the Lectionary rather than simply use their favourite passages of the Bible. This protects congregations from hearing the same homilies over and over again or only hearing the preacher’s favourite scriptural passages. It also keeps preachers honest by confronting them with a full spectrum of Scripture readings. I had to wonder what conservative preachers did with last Sunday’s reading from the Prophet Isaiah.

Retirement on the Horizon Our Parish Secretary, Ruth Villani, has given notice that after more than 15 years as Parish Secretary she will re-tire on 3rd July 2020.

Appointed by Fr. John Cunningham in 2004, Ruth has served the Parish faithfully and has seen off three Parish Priests and is working on her fourth. This is not the time to eulogize Ruth for the way she has lived out her special vocation within the Parish - there will be time for that come July. But as Ruth prepares for a handover within the Parish Office, and also prepares more personally for her transition to retirement, I would ask you to remember her in your prayers in the months ahead. Change comes with all sorts of challenges for all of us as individuals but as St. John Henry Newman reminds us change helps us move towards perfection.

Visitor from Bethlehem University Come and hear Brother Peter Bray FSC (Vice Chancellor of Bethlehem University) speak about life in Bethlehem and the amazing ministry of the only Catholic University in Palestine and its challenge to educate a new generation of young Christian and Muslim leaders in a land ravaged by injustice, occupation and oppression. Sunday 23rd Feb-ruary, 6.00pm at The Cunningham Centre (opposite St. Bernadette’s School) 53 Stanley St, Ivanhoe. Please RSVP to Parish Office by tomorrow (Monday) 9499 1515 or [email protected] All Welcome!

Parish Climate Action Group

Our group will continue to challenge the parish commu-nity with the teaching of Pope Francis’ Laudato Si with its description of climate and environmental degrada-tion, its causes, the consequent injustices to the poor and future generations and the call to action to heal the earth - to heal God’s creation. On April 29th we will be holding a public seminar featuring Mark Delaney, author of ‘Low Carbon and Loving It’. Mark’s work is guided by his ethical and Christian perspective and he has attract-ed media attention for his views and his work as a faith-based activist.

“A true ecological approach always becomes a social approach; it must integrate questions of justice in de-bates on the environment, so as to hear both the cry of the earth and the cry of the poor.” - Laudato Si

Tip of the week: Are there any groups that you can join to help build our common home? Tree-planting or weed-ing groups and clean-up groups might be a start.

The Australian Response to Religious Climate Change (ARRCC) or Transition Banyule, which has an Ivanhoe branch, might appeal ([email protected])

1st Reading Sirach 15:15-20

A reading from the book of Sirach

If you choose, you can keep the com-mandments, and to act faithfully is a matter of your own choice.

The Lord has placed before you fire and water; stretch out your hand for whichever you choose. Before each person are life and death, and which-ever we choose will be given.

For great is the wisdom of the Lord; he is mighty in power and sees every-thing; his eyes are on those who fear him, and he knows every human ac-tion. He has not commanded anyone to be wicked, and he has not given anyone permission to sin.

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God

Responsorial Psalm

R. Happy are they who follow the law of the Lord!

They are happy whose life is blame-less, who follow God's law! They are happy those who do his will, seeking him with all their hearts. R.

You have laid down your precepts to be obeyed with care. May my foot-steps be firm to obey your statutes. R.

Bless your servant and I shall live and obey your word. Open my eyes that I may consider the wonders of your law. R.

Teach me the demands of your stat-utes and I will keep them to the end. Train me to observe your law, to keep it with my heart. R.

2nd Reading 1 Corinthians 2:6-10

A reading from the first letter of Paul to the Corinthians

My brothers and sisters, among the mature we do speak wisdom, though it is not a wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are doomed to perish. But we speak God's wisdom, secret and hidden, which God decreed before the ages for our glory. None of the rulers of this age understood this; for if they

had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.

As it is written, "What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the human heart conceived what God has pre-pared for those who love him." These things God has revealed to us through the Spirit; for the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God.

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God

Gospel Acclamation Alleluia, alleluia! Blessed are you, Father, Lord of heav-en and earth; you have revealed to little ones the mysteries of the king-dom. Alleluia!

Gospel Matthew 5:17-37

A reading from the holy Gospel ac-cording to Matthew. + Glory to you, O Lord.

On the mountain, Jesus gathered his disciples around him and he taught them, saying: "Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets; I have come not to abolish but to fulfil. For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. "You have heard that it was said to those of ancient times, 'You shall not mur-der'; and 'whoever murders shall be liable to judgment.' But I say to you that if you are angry with a brother or sister, you will be liable to judg-ment; and if you insult a brother or sister, you will be liable to the coun-cil; and if you say, 'You fool,' you will be liable to the hell of fire.

"So when you are offering your gift at the altar, if you remember that your brother or sister has something against you, leave your gift there be-fore the altar and go; first be recon-ciled to your brother or sister, and then come and offer your gift.

"You have heard that it was said, 'You shall not commit adultery.' But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust has already com-mitted adultery with her in his heart.

"Again, you have heard that it was said to those of ancient times, 'You shall not swear falsely, but carry out the vows you have made to the Lord.' But I say to you: Do not swear at all.

Let your word be 'Yes,' if 'Yes' or 'No,' if 'No'; anything more than this comes from the evil one."

The Gospel of the Lord:

Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

mandate, it is a civic responsibility. The prophets threatened dire conse-quences to the nation if it failed in its responsibility. The marketplace cannot solve all problems. There is a legitimate role for government in caring for the poor and marginal-ized.

The new breed of Christian funda-mentalists (beloved by many of our politicians) preaching what they call “the prosperity gospel” promise indi-vidual success and wealth but the prophets tell us to not worry about ourselves but to take care of those in need. St. Paul warned the Corin-thians about eloquent preachers who were undermining the work of Christ.

Rather we should listen to Jesus, who said, "your light must shine be-fore others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heaven-ly Father."
