THIS EUCHARISTIC FEAST

Some things about human nature don't change, even over the course of centuries. When we celebrate a holiday, we have a meal; when we celebrate a significant event, we have a feast. In today's first reading, Lady Wisdom is setting a feast, a sign of cele-brating the covenant that Israel has with God. Israel's central remembrance of its sav-ing Exodus covenant is the Passover meal.

So it is natural--and not coincidental--that the Christian celebration of the new covenant sealed by the blood of Christ on the cross happens at a meal, our Eucharist, offered first by Jesus in the context of Passover remembrance. It is easy for us, sometimes, to forget the very long and rich religious and human origins of our eucharistic feasting on the bread and cup that are the Body and Blood of Jesus.

Today, and for the next few Sundays that we hear the "Bread of Life" discourse from John, let us bring to mind the loving covenant that God makes with us, and be filled with great joy at this marvelous feast that we have come to attend!

PARISH NEWS & EVENTS

BACK-TO-SCHOOL SUMMER CLEARANCE—For a limited time, all Lighthouse CDs are on sale for $1 so we can make room for new inventory. Sale ends Friday, August 31, or while supplies last. The Lighthouse Media display rack is located on the wall in the vestibule of the church. Thanks! Coordinator of this ministry is Cathie Gutman.

SPREAD THE WORD!—The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA). RCIA is a process by which adults learn about Catholic beliefs and teachings over the course of several months in order to make an informed decision to become Catholic. Weekly inquiry sessions are 7pm to 8pm each Tuesday at Carpenter Hall (our parish office) for 3 months beginning THIS WEEK, August 21. Weekly sessions include an incredible video followed by a Q/A discussion about the content of the video and/or the topical handout given the previous week. INFORM AND INVITE family and friends about this opportunity to learn and ask questions about the Catholic faith. The Holy Spirit will do the rest. It’s helpful if can attend the first meeting or two with them to ensure their comfort and ease. Need more info? Contact Sam for more details, (321) 431-2660 or [email protected].

MOVIE MADNESS—Our final movie of the summer is Ignatius of Loyola: Soldier Sinner Saint. The final showing is at 6:30pm Saturday, August 18 at Holy Spirit’s Carpenter Hall (Church Office). Bring your own chair & movie snacks. Doors open 1 hour before movie time for those who want to bring a brown-bag lunch/dinner. (Pixar movie shorts will be shown 5:30pm to 6:30pm.) Kids ages 13 & under must be accompanied by an adult. The IGNATIUS movie contains war violence and

may not be suitable for kids under 13 years old.

THE NEXT 50 BEGINS—The Anniversary Committee is asking for current photos that distinguish your home and family life as “Catholic” as we move into our 51st year as a parish. Photos should specifically be from 2017 or 2018, the celebration time-frame of our 50th Anniver-sary as a parish. Examples include family photos with a holy water font, a crucifix, blessed statue or picture, rosary, Advent wreath, nativity set, Bible study materials, Catholic reading material, prayer space or home altar. Review your photos or take a few new ones, and send your favorite “Catholic at Home” photo JPG to [email protected]. Your photo will be used in a ‘memory book’ — a compilation of our 50th anniversary events.

ELIJAH CUP—Our parishioners pray for an increase to the priestly and religious vocations in our parish and diocese with the sacred vessel which once held the Precious Blood—the Elijah Cup. A booklet with suggested daily prayers is included in the case with photos for displaying the Cup in a place of honor in your home. The signup binder is in the vestibule .

This week: Sunday, August 19, 11:00am — Jeff & Bobbie Lakaszcyck Next week: Sunday, August 26, 8:30am — Maryann & Steve Rapanaro

CONFESSION TIMES EXPANDED!—Effective immediately, Father Andrew is available after each morning Mass to hear confessions. This is a good sign of the spiritual growth of our parish mem-bers. Morning Mass is at 8am on Tues-day, Thursday and Friday. Need help preparing for a good confession? Pam-phlets are available in a rack next to the confession room.

THE EUCHARIST IS ALIVE — FROM “7 SECRETS OF THE EUCHARIST” BY VINNY FLYNN HOMILY SUMMARY ▪ FATHER ANDREW WOJTAN ▪ AUGUST 12, 2018

If a stranger who knew nothing about the Eucharist were to watch the way we receive, would he know this? When you and I approach the Eucharist, does it look like we believe we are about to take into our bodies the living person, Jesus Christ, true God and true man? The Host that we receive is not a thing! It's not a wafer! It's not bread! It's a Person - and He's alive!

In 1916, as a year of preparation for Our Lady's appearances at Fatima, the Angel of Peace appeared three times to Lucia, Jacinta, and Francisco. The most dramatic scene is the third visit, when the angel comes with the Eucharist. Suspending the Host and the chalice in the air, he throws himself prostrate on the ground and has the children repeat the following prayer three times:

Most Holy Trinity, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, I offer You the most precious Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Jesus Christ, present in all the tabernacles of the world, in reparation for the outrages, sacrileges, and indifference with which He Himself is offended. And, through the infinite merits of His most Sacred Heart and the Immacu-late Heart of Mary, I beg of You the conversion of poor sinners.

I'm not suggesting that we all run up and throw ourselves on our faces in front of the Eucharist the next time we go to receive. But interiorly we can. Whether we stand or kneel to receive, we can always, in our hearts, minds, and souls, be prostrate in adoration of the living God in the Eucharist.

As Pope John Paul II points out, we "need to cultivate a lively awareness of Christ's real presence," and we should take care "to show that awareness through tone of voice, ges-tures, posture, and bearing."

Pope Benedict XVI says: What is important is reverence: It is quite wrong to argue about this or that form of behavior. We should be concerned only to argue in favor of ... a reverence in the heart, an inner submission before the mystery of God.

And the Catechism the Catholic Church adds: Under the consecrated species of bread and wine, Christ himself, living and glorious, is present in a true, real, and substantial man-ner. CCC #1415

It is this living and glorious Christ who complains to St. Faustina:
