THANK YOU - THANK YOU - THANK YOU

The memory of this past month that will be most treasured for me will be how my mother, on that Saturday night, longed to see the Son of God. I arrived at my mom’s house at 6:30 pm. All of my siblings, and all of my nieces and nephews had spent the day with their mom and grandma. I was the last member of mom’s family she needed to see. I spent 20 minutes with her alone, talking, praying, and telling her that I loved her. And by 7:15 pm she was looking into the Face of Christ.

This is what life—and death—are really about, a longing to see the Son of God. It is what gave my mother joy and peace as she began her own passage from this life. We long to see her now, to wish that this had never happened. But the direction we all must aim for is this same one, the one that will enable us to see her again.

I reflect daily on my mom’s passing. When I wake up, it’s the first thing on my mind. During the day, there are infinite reminders. When I go to sleep, it’s the last thing I think of. When a parent of an adult dies, there is almost an unspoken expectation that it will not hit you head on. An adult is expected to accept death as a part of life, to handle all sudden losses in an appropriate adult manner. But really, what does that mean? That you should not be sad? That you should be so grateful they didn’t die when you were a child, that you don’t need to mourn your parent? The above considerations demonstrate an under-estimation of grief.

Grief is the reflection of the connection that has been lost. That loss does not diminish because you are an adult or because your mother or father lived a long life. Our society places enormous pressure on us to get over loss, to get through the grief. But how long do you grieve for the woman who was your mother for 50 years? The loss happens in a moment, but its aftermath lasts a lifetime. The grief is real because the loss is real. Each loss has its own imprint, as distinctive and unique as the person we lost. It doesn’t matter how old we are. We will never have another father. We will never have another mother.

We sometimes forget the depth of connection we have with our parents. They are often our main connection in the world, and to the world. The death of a parent means the loss of one of our first and most important connections. For one's parent is really one's first friend. One's longest first friend. No friend we will ever meet on life's journey will have been so interested or committed to us. No other friend will have known our first step or our first smile or our first tear. No other friend will know us through and through in such an intimate manner as to call us by our name—a name they themselves have chosen and given us. A parent is one who calls us by name for the first time.

I know I could not have gone through this without the Prince of Peace community. During this time of COVID, we were not able to gather in a tradition that we were used to. A visitation, funeral and cemetery. But the amount of prayers, cards, mass cards, those who joined to watch the funeral live streamed, and all the well wishes truly gave me and my siblings the support we needed as we mourned the loss of our mother. I could not have done it without you.

My mom would be so happy. I have received almost 60 mass cards that will be said for the repose of her soul. She had more priests at her funeral than we did for my father, and we were also able to get Bishop Rassas to do the Final Commendation. She would joke, that because she had a son who was a priest, she was going straight to Heaven. I would remind her that, “I am the priest, and I am not even sure I am going straight to heaven!” With all of you assisting her, I am comforted knowing she is seeing the face of God.

I do need to give some special thanks for those who helped me during this difficult time, and that is the Staff of Prince of Peace. After 25 years of priesthood, and the number of parishes I have been a part of as priest and seminarian, I want you to realize how blessed we are to have the people we do working on our behalf. From the deacons, their wives, Barb Ruhl and the rest of the parish staff and school they allowed me to grieve as a son who lost his mother.

MASS Intentions for the Week

I would also like to thank, personally, Andrew Ringa and Chris Baran, from Ringa Funeral home. If I could share some advice, plan ahead as much as you can! My mom did, and it made the week of her death a little less stressful. Please call Deacon Jim Minor, at our parish, to talk about services, and then call Andrew Ringa from Ringa Funeral home. As you stand looking into the face of Christ, those you leave behind will greatly appreciate it.

Finally, I would like to share with you the most valuable lesson my mom ever taught me, and that is the story of Jesus. I will do my best to continue to share that lesson with you as your pastor. Peace and love,

Fr. Gerald

Attention Weekday Mass Attendees

Please be aware that school opens for face-to-face learning on Wednesday, August 19th. This year we will be using ALL doors for arrival and dismissal. This means we will have students entering through the gathering space. Please use extra caution when arriving and parking. The main activity for drop off will be between 7:15am and 7:40am, therefore the drop off procedure should not interfere with your arrival to morning Mass, but we ask for your patience as we return and settle in to our new procedures. Thank You!

A Prayer for Vocations:

Heavenly Father, Your divine Son taught us to pray

to the Lord of the harvest to send laborers into His

vineyard. We earnestly beg You to bless our

Archdiocese and our world with many priests and

religious men and women who will love You fervently,

and gladly and courageously spend their lives in service

to Your Son’s Church under the guidance of the Holy

Spirit. We pray that their lives may be always centered

on our Eucharistic Lord; that they be always faithful to

the Holy Father; and that they may be devoted sons

and daughters of Mary, our Mother, in making You

known and loved; and that all may attain Heaven.

Bless our families and our children and choose

from our homes those whom You desire for this

holy work. We ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Evangelization Event

Amazing Possibilities with Matthew Kelly Update We wanted to give all of you an update on the Amazing Possibilities event with Matthew Kelly that was scheduled for our parish November 7th. When the pandemic hit, we became somewhat discouraged that there would be a possibility it would be cancelled. We are overjoyed that the event will still be taking place on November 5th. However, it will now be in a virtual format. It is certainly disappointing that Matthew is not able to be with us and see the enthusiasm of our great parish community in person, but it is still an opportunity for all of you to come together virtually to experience the inspiration and prayer that he will provide us that evening.

Perhaps now more than ever, as we continue to weather the changes that have happened to all of us over the last months, we can use this time to set ourselves on a new path that will re-energize us about our faith, but also provide us an opportunity to share our Catholic faith with others. What better way to help us with that, than by coming together and being with many other people from around the world that night, albeit virtually. When the event was first publicized earlier this year, we had already sold over half of the available spaces for the night. The hidden grace that comes from this now is that instead of worrying about reaching capacity in the parish life center, we can now offer this to everyone in the parish and allow them to view it in the comfort of their own homes.

Those who have purchased tickets have received an email from Dynamic Catholic with an invitation to simply show up on November 5th. We hope you are able to accept this invitation! But for those who haven’t purchased tickets, the event is now open for you as well. Watch the bulletin, check out our website and listen to Mass announcements in the coming weeks to see how you can participate.

Because the event is now virtual, Matthew Kelly is now offering some additions to the programming. First, he has offered to do a time of live, interactive Q&A. So, you will be able to submit questions and hear them answered that night. Other perks include an interactive Dream Session that he will lead us through, a chance to meet his children, and hear great music. Finally, the book, Amazing Possibilities will be shipped right to your door.

One of the ways we can set ourselves on a new path with this event is not only to purchase tickets, but also to invite family who might not necessarily view or attend the event to come to your home that night and watch it with you. What a perfect way to evangelize our families and to inspire them with the message of our Catholic faith.

We are also working on some creative ways to help those of you who are not tech-savvy to be able to enjoy the event as well. Stay tuned for those details in the coming weeks.

One of the lessons all of us have learned in the last months is that first and foremost, our Catholic faith does not go away with a pandemic. Jesus is present to us today just as He was a few months ago. But what we have to do is practice and be inspired by our faith in different ways. This event is giving us an opportunity to be inspired by Matthew’s message and take that inspiration into our lives and the lives of the people we meet every day.

If you have any questions, please let us know.

Deacon Jim Minor

Next weekend, August 22-23, with our normal schedule:

Weekday Mass August 17 – August 21 at 8:00am - WITH RESERVATION SYSTEM

Reconciliation is currently by appointment

Please call the parish office & leave a message or email Fr. John at [email protected] or Fr. Gerald at [email protected] to make an appointment.

The Cardinal recognizes that many parishioners are concerned about their health, and may be reluctant to gather for Mass, so, the dispensation from attending Mass is still in effect. Since parishioners are still dispensed from coming to Mass, we will continue to record the Sunday Mass and have it available on our website.

We need to clean the church between Masses, so, we ask that parishioners exit the church building, to the parking lot, immediately after Mass so that this can be done.

We are using an online reservation system to monitor the number of individuals we can safely have in the church and maintain safe social distancing. If you are unable to access the reservation site by computer or cell phone, you can call the parish office and we will manually enter you into a time slot.

This sign up system will be used for Masses AND Eucharistic Adoration. We are asking everyone to use the reservation system which is available from the front page of our website (www.princeofpeacelv.org).

If individuals come without a reservation it may be necessary to turn parishioners away if the church gets too full. I ask that you please understand the situation and please do not be offended if this happens. Again, I want to thank everyone for their patience and understanding.

Thank you for your cooperation with these new protocols we must follow. It has been wonderful to see everyone again. We look forward to when all of us can join together around the Lord’s table. Father Gerald, your parish staff and volunteer team

We would not be able to offer Mass & Eucharistic Adoration without the dedicated team of volunteers that we have! Please consider volunteering a couple hours each week - call the parish office for more information.

Have You Thought About RCIA?

Have you thought about becoming a Catholic? Are you a Catholic who has never moved beyond the Sacrament of Baptism? Do you know others who have mentioned an interest in learning about the Catholic religion, those never baptized or baptized in a different Christian religion? Or, do you know someone who was baptized Catholic but never received further instruction to receive First Communion and Confirmation? RCIA is here for all of you!

This year’s RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) formation group is scheduled to begin meeting on September 8, 2020 (this date is like all other dates at this time, likely to be changed since it is dependent on our ability to get together safely). Once you have made contact as listed below, we will keep you informed on our status and plans.

Meeting on Tuesday evenings at 7:30 p.m. until about 9:00 p.m., people who meet the conditions mentioned in the questions above come together to learn about the Catholic religion in an adult learning environment. The class format allows and promotes interaction between the presenter and the participants, and asking questions is strongly encouraged.

No commitment to become a member of the Catholic faith is required of those who attend until well into the process. All are welcome to come and see what the RCIA is all about and to join the group’s leader, Deacon Tim Leonard, on this journey of faith discernment. Please contact Deacon Tim at (847) 265-0686 or email [email protected] if you have an interest in exploring the Catholic faith or if you would like additional information. He’s waiting to hear from YOU!

Our prayers and sympathy to the families of

James Murphy (husband of Margaret Murphy),

and the recently departed.

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord.

Weekend Stewardship Collection For the weekend of August 8-9, 2020

Total Envelopes $ 9,945.50

Electronic Giving $ 6,264.50

TOTAL COLLECTION $16,210.00

“For the gifts and the call of God are irrevocable.” (Romans 11:29)

God has a special mission in mind for each of us. He has given us the gifts we need to accomplish that mission. We are called to be good stewards by using those gifts to do the work that He has planned for each of us. If we deny our gifts or fail to use them as God calls us to use them, then some part of His work will be left undone.

10

How do I handle my Sunday Contributions during this Time …

For the past several months, while we were unable to attend Mass, and now that we cannot pass the collection basket at Mass, the Sunday contributions received have been significantly lower than what we normally experience. As our lives and finances are impacted during this time, please remember the church’s expenses continue. We are present to meet the needs of our parish community as we are able.

There is a “Donate Now” button on our parish website that you can use for your Sunday donations. You can also sign up for continued Electronic Giving for your Sunday Stewardship contributions, either by direct debit from your bank account or credit card, on a monthly or weekly basis. A form is available on the next page or on our parish website. After signing up, never worry about forgetting your envelope again! It continues your support to Prince of Peace when you are out of town, on vacation or unable to attend Mass.

Parishioners who donate electronically to the Sunday collection receive a quarterly envelope packet, which contains envelopes for any special collections (i.e. Sharing Parish, St. Vincent de Paul & Archdiocesan collections) rather than the full monthly packet you receive now. Providing you with this new quarterly packet results in a savings to the parish.

If you prefer to write a check, or use cash, and use your envelopes, please deposit them in the box when you enter the church or mail your Sunday donations to the parish. Thank you for your continued support of Prince of Peace!!

St. Paul exhorts us to remove all bitterness, fury, anger, shouting, abuse and malice from our relationships. Instead cultivate kindness, compassion and forgiveness. (Eph 4:31-32). Strive to follow this advice today.

ELECTRONIC GIVING FORM

Our Electronic Giving program assures a continuation of your support even when you are not here. We encourage all of our parishioners to seriously consider utilizing this program. Most of us find that we attend Mass at parishes other than Prince of Peace during the year, related to vacations, family events, etc. We have received positive comments from parishioners who already utilize this program such as, “this makes it so much easier” and “I have peace of mind knowing that when I am out of town my obligations have been met.”

Direct debits and credit cards can be processed dependent on your preference. Please see below for options. If you require a different schedule please call Barb Ruhl, in the parish office.

I (we) hereby authorize Prince of Peace Church, to initiate debits to my (our) account as indicated below. I (we) authorize the financial institution below, to credit the amount of such entries to my (our) account. This authority is to remain in full force and effect until I (we) revoke the agreement. Any revocation is effective only after Prince of Peace Church has received notification from me (us) to terminate this agreement in such time and manner as to afford a reasonable opportunity to act upon the notice.

Please complete information below & then select Direct Debit and/or Credit Card option. advising us of changes as soon as possible. Welcome to Prince of Peace! We are glad you are here!
