Some 600 were on hand Feb. 28 for the annual Honoring Our Heroes event sponsored by three 2-S5

clubs. Bryan Evening, Bryan Noon and College Station Noon Lions joined the 100 Club to provide an

evening of fun, food and entertainment to area first responders and their guests.

The sponsoring organizations shared more than $10,000 raised by the steak dinner and music show,

which featured nine-time Grammy Award winners Asleep at the Wheel.

PDG Ron Gay of the College Station Noon club chaired the steering committee.

The event is not just a fund raiser for Lions Club charities. It also helps the 100 Club. The 100 Club cares

for widows and orphans of first responders killed in the line of duty. Gay noted the 100 Club has paid

out more than $1 million to the families of area first responders killed on duty in the last two years.

“We need to do what we can to support that organization and those families,” he said. “In addition,

this is a great opportunity to thank those who are still serving us every day. It gives them a chance to

relax with a guest for a few hours and lets them know there are people in this community who

appreciate what they do every single day.

“When you and I get up each day, we don’t have to strap on a Kevlar vest. We don’t have to worry if

the next person we meet is a friend or foe. That takes a mental toll. We owe these people a great

debt.”
