The Carthage Noon Lions Club recently celebrated reaching their goal of having20 members participate in The Century Club.

The Century Club is a giving program which raises money to support the TexasLions Camp. Texas Lions Camp is a residential camping facility for children withphysical disabilities, type 1 diabetes and cancer. The Camp is located on over500 acres in the beautiful Texas Hill Country, and is designed to introduce the"Can Do" philosophy to children dealing with special medical conditions.

Children with special needs from all over the State of Texas are invited to attendone of 9 weeks, which we hope will become one of their life-long childhoodmemories. A week designed for fun, exploration and challenge.

The primary purpose of the Camp is to provide, without charge, a camp forphysically disabled, hearing/vision impaired, and diabetic children from theState of Texas, regardless of race, religion, or nationalorigin. Our goal is to provide an atmosphere whereincampers will learn the "Can Do" philosophy and beallowed to achieve maximum personal growth andself-esteem.

Dear fellow Lions, I hope you will grab acup of coffee and read this to the end, Iapologize for the long length, but this isinfo you need to know as sponsors of ourLago Vista Leo club. As co-advisor of theLago Vista Leo Club alongside Vernon, Iwould like to take a few moments of yourtime to tell you some things that youmay not know about our Lago Vista LeoClub. First of all, did you know thatevery single one of these kids are theelite of Lago Vista High School? By this Imean that these kids are not youreveryday, get up and go to school kids. They are very hard working in school. Most are in more than one club. They areinvolved in athletics, drama, theatre, debate, Spanish club etc. They havejobs, they pay for their own things athome. They are not in this just for apossible chance at a scholarship. Theyrealize to get anywhere in this world, youhave to work harder than your averageperson, you have to want more andaccomplish more.

Did you know that we have one seniorwith whom I asked if I could write aletter of recommendation for as Leoadvisor and he kindly thanked me andsaid he is joining the armed forces in thehopes to become a pilot one day sotherefore he did not need a letter. This isthe same boy who made homemade piesfor our Thanksgiving feast boxes. Hewanted these people to have somethingspecial and from the heart. He did notask for any recognition nor did he do itfor a possible Leo scholarship, he did itbecause it was important to him.

Lago Vista Leo club

We also have other outstanding kids. Wehave several that got up at 3:00 AMwhen it is just slightly above freezingoutside to go work on a horse farm tomake a special day for children after afull week of rain and mud everywhere. We have several who give up theirSunday's to go scoop poop and washnasty cages at the animal shelter, one ofwhich is even allergic to cats!

We have Leo's who wake up at 4:00 AMto assemble to go to meetings inHouston, Kerrville and Austin, just to doLeo work. They even work in the car enroute to these meetings to be betterprepared for the day.

When I took a bunch of Leo's to Kerrvillerecently to attend a leadershipconference, there was a dance anddinner one night. While most of the otherLeo clubs were staying up all nightpartying, my group wanted to go back tothe room and finish their homework. These kids are in Pre AP and AP classesand time is precious to them! When wehad an almost altercation with a drunkman, the boys in the club decidedtogether they would stay by the girls andescort them to their rooms safe andsound!

Page 17: Texas Lions MD-2 Dec Newsletter 2013

Pg. 17 Kemah Lions Club Inducts New Members

We have Leo's who come from brokenfamilies. I have listened to their storiesand have hopefully tried to coach andcounsel them as best I can as a motheras well as Vernon giving out advice too!I have heard from several that becauseof their involvement in the Leo Club, theyhave a second family that they can relyand call upon. These kids want to make adifference in their community so thatothers lives will be impacted and so thatothers will feel the worth of theirexistence.

We have kids that gave up nearly everySaturday of their summer to workalongside the Lion's at the Lago Vistalibrary to assist with children and theykeep saying they cannot wait til nextsummer to do it again. We have Leo'sthat ask for a day off from work to gowork on a Leo project, when they couldjust as well be at work earning money topay for their car insurance!

We have Leo's that have never knowtheir grandparents, ones who served inWWII and knew what they as well as theworld endured during those times, butthanks to the Leo Club, they got to talkto survivors and interview them. gettingthe tender story of their lives, theirsloves, there losses as well as their dutyto their country.

We had several Leo's attended the longweekend meeting in Kerrville whowanted to wake up at 3:00 AM onSunday, skip the free hotel breakfast, just so they could get to the Race for theCure walk in downtown Austin this year, proudly representing the Leo's. I know, because I had to wake up that early todrive them and then wait for them towalk!

Lago Vista Leo club (con’t)

We have a Leo who was not afraid tostand up and speak directly to the LionInternational President and be so excitedto tell him what our Leo's do alongsideour Lions. Ok, she was my daughter, butif you know Lily, she lives in a protectiveshell and public speaking is not her forte!

We have Leo's that worked twoweekends in a row in 35 degree weatherat Lowe's market asking the communityfor food donations and they filled the boxfull twice-and if you saw our boxes, theywere huge! I know, because I was rightthere with them for all those days andhours! Ok, I did leave once to get coffeeand jackets for them! These kids handsorted the food into boxes for needyfamilies and we made sure each familygot enough canned goods for not onlyThanksgiving but for Christmas andbeyond! I had one Leo call spanishspeaking recipients and speak to them inSpanish because my one year of Spanishover a hundred years ago was not doingthe trick of conveying the message of wehave a special Thanksgiving box for youand then go on to explain who we wereand why we were doing this for them!

We have Leo's that withstand the bittercold to hand out food to the communityunder a Lago Vista Lion sign and while Iwas just the driver that day, I stood inthe background beaming at how happythey were and when a few friends cameup to me at various times and asked whythe kids were working with the Lionsbecause they thought they were just aclub for older people, I happily explainedthat we all work side by side for thecommunity and I affectionately call themmy "Baby Lions." I even had a couplesay, "Hmm, how can I get my childinvolved…" to which I gave them mycontact info.

Page 18: Texas Lions MD-2 Dec Newsletter 2013

Pg. 18 Kemah Lions Club Inducts New Members

We have Leo's who met on a Sunday, during the busiest season of the year to go tothe mall and hand pick two children, a boy and a girl off of the Salvation Army AngelChristmas tree and spent their time as well as their own money to buy gifts for thesechildren while representing the Leo Club to try and make these two children'sChristmas's a little happier!

We had a past member who has recently graduated and a recipient of a Lago VistaLion Club award who confided much of his past life in me, one that I would wish uponno one... who always just kept telling me he just likes to help people! He still keeps incontact with me and other Leo's and yes, is working hard at college helping people!

So, you see the success of our Leo Club is transitioning into all aspects of their lives. Itruly believe these kids are our future and that each will move on to glorious thingsand always look back on their high school lives and say, "Yes, I made a difference"

Thank you for listening and getting to know our kids as well as sponsoring andworking side by side with them. They truly represent Lionism, even as teens!. I hopeyou can see it is not "our club" speaking of Vernon and myself, but it is "their" club, speaking of the kids who are members. I hope that each of you will one day see all ofour pics and slideshow.

Merry everything and happiness in the New Year and always!

The second annual Lions Walk for Diabetes Awareness or Southeast TexasStrides was organized to help educate the community about the management ofdiabetes and related illnesses. The walk began at 8 a.m. with a twenty dollardonation per adult and ten dollars for walkers under 15 to participate and allproceeds from the event benefit Texas Lions Camp in Kerrville, Texas; a StridesT-shirt was included for each participant with his or her donation. All proceedsfrom this event held by the Lions of District 2-S1 goes to Diabetes Sessions andprograms at the camp Total distance covered was five kilometers, with healthscreenings and information from local companies was available to the publicfree-of-charge in the infield of the track.

There were around 100 participants in this year’s event with eighteen LionsClubs represented and twenty five health and community organizations involved.Local Walgreens stores performed blood-sugar testing and blood-pressurechecks, and other entities had booths where diabetes information was available, said Robert Blackburn, co-chair of the event. A live DJ was on hand to providemusic for the walk. The first lap was done in silence because diabetes is a silentkiller. In light of the fact that the event was held just before Veteran’s Day, thesecond lap was made in honor of the Military and all of our Veterans.

Children from Southeast Texas and all over Texas are able to attendthe camp at no charge, thanks in part to fundraisers like Southeast TexasStrides, which was held on Saturday, November 9, 2013 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.at Ty Terrell Track on Jimmy Simmons Boulevard next tothe Shelia Umphrey Recreational Sports Center on theLamar University campus in Beaumont, Texas.

“The steps that we take today helpothers to take steps tomorrow,”said Trish Wilson, developmentdirector at Texas Lions Camp. “Thisevent is something that is simple;it’s easy, … it’s life changing … forthose you’re raising money for —those at Texas Lions Camp,” Wilsonadded, that the event will changethe lives of Strides participants aswell, knowing that they are makinga difference in children’s lives.Texas Lions Camp providesdiabetes-affected children with fun, educational, social and physicalactivities during their stay in thebeautiful Texas Hill Country inKerrville, Texas, one hour northwestof San Antonio.

At the camp, the medical staff, which stays with the children intheir cabins, performs blood glucosechecks throughout each day andeducates the children on diabetesand how to live with the disease,Wilson said. There is also a dieticianon staff to teach the children abouthealthy eating habits and how tolimit their diet to diabetes-friendlymeals. “It starts to teach them howto take care of their daily living andteaches them life skills to be able tomaintain and control their diabetesas much as possible,” she said.“When they go home they’re able tohelp their parents and familyunderstand, ‘this is something I canlive with, but we have to worktogether.’”

Southeast Texas Strides (con’t)“We have over 500 acres of sheerheaven for kids,” Wilson said. “Theycan horseback ride, swim, paddleboat, kayak and canoe. Wehave a climbing wall and upperelements that they can walk 30 feetup in the air on telephone poles. It’san adventure waiting to happen.”“They feel sometimes like they arethe only person that has thisdisease, and they feel like they arealone … that it’s something theyjust don’t know how to deal with,”Wilson said. “But when they get toTexas Lions Camp … they realizethat there are 200 children fromacross the state of Texas with theexact same disease right there. They immediately have an army offriends who know exactly what theyare going through.”

“This years StridesWalk raised $9,000.00 for the TexasLions Camp and will be used toenhance the Diabetes relatedprograms at the Texas Lions Camp”said Lion Robert Blackburn, co chairof this year’s event. Lion RandyWilkins of the Sour Lake Lions Clubsingle handedly raised in excess of$1450.00 for this year’s event afterraising more than $1200.00 lastyear. For his support of SoutheastTexas Strides the committeepresented him with a custom madejacket. We are looking forward tonext year’s walk and adding newand exciting things to attract moreparticipants.
