Largo Vista Leo Club News

Pg. 5

LAGO VISTA LEO CLUB NEWS By: Leo Lily Jameson The Lago Vista Leo’s are back to school and are also starting a new Leo Year with our newly elected officers! The Lago Vista Leos actually never stopped helping this summer! More Leo news: District Leo Chair, Liz Bumguardner will be applying for the Leo Leadership Grant Program to help all Leo’s in our district. The goal of the program is to further develop Leos’ leadership skills, specifically in the areas of project management, communication, teamwork, creativity/innovation, and planning community service projects. Each multiple district, sub-district or single district can only receive financial assistance for a Leo leadership conference once every three fiscal years. The Youth Programs Department of Lions Clubs International will approve eligible grants on a first-come, first-served basis. Wish her luck! Lion Linda Jameson (aka-my mom) has submitted an application for our Lago Vista Leo Club for the Leo Club Excellence Award! We have been told that no one from our district has ever applied!

He was interested in the concerns of the ladies. Many voiced their opinions, suggestions and problems. I was astonished to hear that so many clubs didn’t know if they had a Leo Club. Those that did, did not seem to work together with their Leo’s. I swallowed hard and raised my hand. I wanted to tell everyone in attendance about how our Leo club works closely with our sponsoring Lion’s club and we do many activities together. I told of the many things our club does throughout the year and about our club officers. I was somewhat embarrassed when the crowd clapped and congratulated me and was even more excited when Mr. Palmer said he would like to give me something the next day. On Saturday, the State Leo officers met, planned, and made decisions for upcoming Leo meetings. I had so much fun and found myself a lot of new friends! All a sudden, the door opened and in walked the International President! He walked right up to me and gave me a copy of his book he had written on following your dreams! I was red faced when all the Leo’s clapped for me but felt very honored that the Int. President sought me out and came to our meeting to say a few words. He joked that we were the ones with the accent, not him! He used the word, y’all...but it still came out sounding very Australian! All in all, it was a great weekend and there are many exciting opportunities in the near future for Leo’s! I’d like to thank each and every Lion for sponsoring us and being supportive in everything we do.

It was a race against time to get signatures from the Leo District Chair and the District Governor for this highly prestigious award, but all was turned in on time and signatures acquired! And lastly, I wanted to tell you all about my experience at the State Leadership Conference in Kerrville,Tx! Friday afternoon I was able to attend the “Lady Lion” meeting with my mother. The Lion’s International President, Barry Palmer was our speaker.

By: Leo Lily Jameson Wow! Have the Leo’s been busy this month! First off, we had 7 Leo’s attend the MD2 Texas Leo Council meeting at the Bergstrom Hilton on Saturday June 1st. Cheyenne, Marquia, Blake, Madeline, Emily,Jocelyn and myself all attended workshops and networked with other Leo’s. Our Leo’s club had thelargest attendees and were also known as the “green shirt” club! We gave a presentation with our computer to highlight our club and the other members were so impressed, they asked us help them do the same sort of slideshow to highlight their club. We have new District officers that were elected that day, they are: Madeline 1st VP, Emily is 2nd VP, Jocelynn is our Tail Twister and I am the District Secretary. I am also the State Secretary! Our training will be in Kerrville, Tx Aug 3rd at the State Leo Conference Planning Committee Session. The goal for the meeting is to plan the LEO State Leadership Conference to be held in San Antonio November 8-10, 2013 which we plan

More than ten years ago, the Canyon Lake Noon Lions envisioned a public pavilion located in the Hidden Valley Sports Park. The Community Resource and Recreation Center (CRRC) submitted a development plan in 2006 for park expansion. Canyon Lake Noon Lions worked closely with the CRRC Board and Advisory Board toward planning a 2,100 square foot covered Pavilion complete with a kitchen, restrooms and storage rooms. The Pavilion will be able to serve area residents as a social gathering place for family reunions, fundraising events, and educational use. Groundbreaking is on the horizon and dedication of the Pavilion is planned for early November. This community gathering place will be dedicated to County Commissioner Jan Kennady in recognition of her unwavering support of the parks development programs and her support of the Canyon Lake community. The Canyon Lake Noon Lions donation has been planned and budgeted for many years and now the project is becoming a reality.

A citizen of Kemah Texas contacted Lions International and said that her child needed glasses for school. Lions International took her information and contacted Kemah Texas Charter President Lion Bill Kerber who was on vacation at the time. Lion Bill Kerber contacted Guiding Lion Denny Holt to see what we could do to fullfill the request. Lion Denny Holt contacted Charter Membership Chairmen Tracy A. Hanes to make it happen. Knowing that Kemah Wal-Mart Store Manager and the optometrist were charter members made it very easy to make this happen. Lion Carol McCants and Lion Tracy A. Hanes went to the Wal-Mart to speak with Lion Brendon Jensen the Store Manager and Lion Julie Pham who happened to be the Optometrist and charter member of the Kemah Lions Club. We explained the need and they donated glasses and the eye exam.

Second Annual Strides Walk event Pg. 17

Lions of Southeast Texas are hosting the Second Annual Strides Walk event at Lamar University’s Ty Terrell Track on Saturday, November 9, 2013. This is a District program. Last year we had nineteen clubs involved and raised ten thousand dollars for Texas Lions Camp. Imagine what we can do this year. This year’s walk will be a 5K with a 1K for the kids and all Clubs in the District are asked to be involved. We need sponsors and participants. Adults will be charged $20 and children under 15 will be charged $10. Sponsorships are available at various amounts to clubs, companies, and individuals. Please see the enclosed form. All proceeds will go to the Texas Lions Camp. Information and forms are also available on our website setxstrides.wordpress.com,the District website www.district2s1.org, and on our facebook page, or email us [email protected] if you have questions. Diabetes affects many people in our area and is of great concern in our local communities. Many in our communities have learned to live with this disease and manage it. Many still need our help in becoming aware of the symptoms and treatments available. We ask that each club help with this Strides Walk. Booth space is available to Lions Clubs for $10.00. We will provide you a space, you are responsible for the setup. Sincerely, Southeast Texas Strides Committee

Lions Club MD-2 State Convention Cruise Pg. 19

The MD-2 Council of Governors for 2013-14 invite you to attend the greatest State Convention on record aboard a Carnival cruise ship on May 15-19, 2014. Hosted by District 2-S4, the ship will depart from Galveston on Thursday after-noon at 4:00 p.m. and return to port on Monday morning at 8:00 a.m. stated PDG Lewis Gardner, Council Chairman for 2013-14. This is going to be a family oriented convention with many seminars available for the regular Lion, according to DGE Ron Martin, Convention Chairman. This convention will be different in that there will be no meal functions, according to Gardner. Most of the general sessions will be held in the mornings, with the afternoons devoted to family activities and fun. Professional entertainment will be available each night. There will be no Lions activities on the day we will be in port, added Martin. This will be a four night, 11 meal (24 hour buffet) cruise. Bring the kids, grand-kids, friends, fellow Lions. The more the better. For more detailed information and cabin deposit forms, go to http://www.md-2texaslionsstatecruiseconvention2014.com/. Carnival has opened all of 2013 for reservations at this time and it is estimated within the next 6 weeks they will open the first half of 2014. At that time, we will compete with the world for space. Get your cabin deposit in SOON. We don’t want you hanging on the side of the ship. Come and be a part of this great event. If you don’t cruise, you lose.
