Tackling Machine: S Ryan Clark has teamed with perennialAll-Pro Troy Polamalu to form one of the finest safety duos in theNFL. Since coming to the Steelers in 2006, Clark has started 95of 96 regular-season games played, including at least 15 gamesin each season from 2009-12.

Clark started the season opener last week versus Tennesseeand recorded career-highs with 15 tackles, including 13 solo. Histackling helped limit the Titans to 2.7 yards per carry while he waspart of a secondary that only gave up 117 net passing yards.

Below are some highlights from Clark’s 2012 season:• Finished third on the team with 106 tackles. It was thefifth consecutive season he recorded at least 100 tackles.• Clark recorded at least seven tackles in nine games.• He led or tied for the team lead in tackles in seven games.• With two forced fumbles, Clark tied his career high set in2005.• Registered two interceptions, which tied (2010) for thesecond most he registered in a single season (three in2005).• In Week 3 at Oakland, he registered an interception off ofQB Carson Palmer and returned it for a career long 26yards to the Oakland 36-yard line, helping set up a Steelers’touchdown.• In a Week 5 win over Philadelphia, Clark forced a MichaelVick fumble at the Steelers’ one-yard line that LB LarryFoote recovered in the end zone for a touchback.

Not Backing Down: CB Ike Taylor is consistently matched upwith the other team’s top receiving threat, routinely minimizingtheir impact. Before missing the last four weeks of the 2012season due to injury, Taylor had played in 135 consecutive games.

Taylor returned to the field for the season opener versusTennessee and helped limit the Titans to 117 net passing yards.

It was a continuation of what Taylor and the secondary did lastseason:

• (at NYG) Taylor earned AFC Defensive Player of the Weekhonors for the second time in his career (Wk. 5 vs. Seattle,10/7/07) by intercepting QB Eli Manning once andregistering five tackles. Taylor led a secondary that heldManning to a passer rating of 41.1, the sixth lowest ratingof his career and the lowest since 11/25/07 againstMinnesota (33.8).• (vs. Was) Taylor helped the Steelers limit Redskins QBRobert Griffin III to season lows in quarterback rating (72.8),yards per attempt (5.2) and completion percentage (47.1)as well as his second fewest passing yards (177).• (at Cin) Taylor was primarily matched up with WR A.J.Green, who entered the game averaging 104.7 receivingyards and 7.2 receptions per game. Against Taylor andthe Steelers secondary Green hauled in one pass for aneight-yard touchdown.

Since Taylor became a regular starter (2005-present), theSteelers have led the league in pass defense, allowing only 190.7net passing yards per game. Since 2005 Taylor has started 104of the 125 regular season games he has played in. In those 125games the defense only allowed seven players to record double-digit receptions in a single game. Also, in those 125 games,Pittsburgh’s defense allowed only nine 300-yard passers, including only one in 2011 and none in the 12 games he played inin 2012 or the one so far in 2013.

Allen Steps In: CB Cortez Allen is a third-year player thatcontinues to establish himself in the defensive backfield. Datingback to last season, Allen has started four of the last five gamesthe Steelers have played.

In his first start in a season opener, Allen registered three solotackles and helped limit Tennessee QB Jake Locker to 125passing yards and a rating of 74.0.

Allen played his best in the final two weeks of the 2012 season, playing a role in five turnovers. In Week 16 vs. Cincinnati. WithTaylor out, Allen primarily was matched up on WR A.J. Green. Heregistered two interceptions off of QB Andy Dalton and forcedGreen to fumble. Dating back to 2000, it was the 12th time aSteelers’ player recorded two interceptions in one game. Allenwas the first player to record two interceptions in a game since STroy Polamalu on 12/12/10 vs. Cincinnati.

The following week vs. Cleveland Allen recorded a career-higheight tackles and forced two fumbles, one that was recovered byLB Lawrence Timmons at the Browns’ 24-yard line and the otherAllen recovered himself and returned 21 yards to the Cleveland

27-yard line. Both turnovers resulted in Steelers’ touchdowns onthe ensuing drives.

Gotta Be Da Beard: DE Brett Keisel started the 2013 seasonjust as he ended the 2012 season, by getting pressure on thequarterback. In Week 1 Keisel tied for the team lead with twoquarterback pressures. In 2012, he led the team with a career-high 40 quarterback pressures, 21 more than LB LawrenceTimmons who finished second on the team with 19. It was themost quarterback pressures by a Pittsburgh defender since LBJames Harrison recorded 44 in 2008. Since the start of the 2011season Keisel has totaled 77 quarterback pressures to lead theSteelers.

Keisel also led the defensive line with 58 tackles in 2012, tying(2006) for the second most he has registered in a single seaonin his career (63 in 2009). Keisel started off the 2013 season bytying for the lead among defensive linemen in Week 1, with sixtackles against Tennessee.

It’s Worilds’ World: In his first three season LB Jason Worildswas limited in his defensive opportunities due to the players hebacked up, Pro Bowl linebackers James Harrison and LaMarrWoodley. When Worilds got his opportunity to play on defense hetook advantage.

Worilds has started 11-of-43 games played during the regularseason since he entered the league in 2010. After recording fivesacks in his first two seasons, Worilds finished third on the teamwith five sacks in 16 games in 2012, while also registering 26tackles and eight quarterback pressures to go with four specialteams tackles.

Twice during his career, Week 12 at Cleveland in 2012 andWeek 14 versus the Browns in 2011, Worilds has regsitered twosacks in one game.

PITTSBURGH – The Steelers lost their 2013 home opener tothe Tennessee Titans, 16-9. It marked the Steelers first home-opening loss since the 2002 season.

On the opening kickoff, Titans RB Darius Reynaud fielded theball just outside the goal line, and then took a knee into the endzone for a safety. It marked the first time that there was a safety onthe opening kickoff since September 18, 1988 (New York Giantsvs. Dallas Cowboys).

Midway through the second quarter, QB Ben Roethlisberger’spass to WR Emmanuel Sanders was picked off by CB AlterraunVerner. Tennessee then went 49 yards on 12 plays on a drive thattook up almost seven minutes of clock time. RB Jackie Battlescored on a three-yard run to cap off the drive to give the Titans a7-2 lead.

Late in the third quarter, K Rob Bironas connected on a 26-yardfield goal to give the Titans a 10-2 lead. Bironas made a 44-yardfield goal midway through the fourth quarter to extend Tennessee’slead, 13-2. And with less than four minutes remaining in the game,Bironas connected on a 27-yard field goal to give the Titans a 16-2 lead.

Late in the game, Roethlisberger led the team on a nine-play,75-yard drive that was capped off with a four-yard touchdownpass to WR Jerricho Cotchery. On the drive, Roethlisbergersurpassed 30,000 passing yards to become just the 35th

quarterback in NFL history to throw for at least 30,000 yards.Despite the loss, the Steelers’ defense held its opponent to

less than 17 points for the ninth-consecutive home opener. Datingback to last season, this marked the seventh game in a rowwhere the Steelers’ defense did not allow a single touchdown inthe first quarter of a game.
