JERRICHO CATCH-ERY

Jerricho Cotchery is no longer a secret weapon. On the open-ing play of the second possession of the 2008 season, BrettFavre hit Cotchery after a play-action fake for a 56-yard touch-down pass. Against ARI, 9/28, Cotchery grabbed four passesfor 67 yards, including two fourth-quarter touchdowns. In2008, Cotchery is tied for the team lead with Laveranues Coleswith 18 receptions for 243 yards and three touchdowns. Lastseason, Cotchery improved to 1,130 yards (13.8) from 961(11.7) in 2006. He registered four 100-yard receiving games, and 13 receptions of 25 yards or longer, which was tied for sec-ond in the NFL with Terrell Owens and Roddy White, trailingonly Reggie Wayne. His combined total of 164 receptions in2006 and 2007 tied for the second-best two-year total in Jetshistory with Coles, who produced 164 receptions from 2005-06. The duo set the Jets record for most catches by a tandemwith 173 (Coles 91, Cotchery 82) in 2006.

Most players remember their first NFL touchdown, but ChansiStuckey’s first NFL touchdown on opening day at MIA, 9/7, wasjust plain memorable. On fourth-and-13 from the MIA 22 in thesecond quarter and kicker Mike Nugent nursing a thigh injury, the Jets went for it. After the snap, Brett Favre avoided onewould-be tackler, and as he was hit, he threw the ball in the di-rection of Stuckey, the second-year WR making his NFL debut.Stuckey made a leaping grab at the goalline for his first careerreception and touchdown. Favre: “I tried to throw it to wheresomebody was and just give someone a chance. I saw him, butI didn’t think he had a chance in hell in catching it.” Stuckey:“Somehow he maneuvered and was able to get the ball off. Itseemed like it was up there forever.”

Stuckey became the 46th player to catch a touchdown passfrom Favre. Stuckey has caught a touchdown in each of his firstthree NFL games, the first player to do that since Andre Davisand Donte Stallworth in 2002. He was the first Jets playersince the AFL/NFL merger in 1970 to catch a touchdown passin his first two games and the first Jets player to score a touch-down in his NFL debut, excluding 1987 replacement games, since safety Darrol Ray returned a fumble 75 yards in a season-opening, 17-14 loss to the Colts, 28 years earlier to the day,9/7/80. The last Jets rookie to score on offense in his NFL debutwas tight end Mickey Shuler, who caught a one-yard touch-down pass from Richard Todd in the Jets 33-20 win over MIA,9/1/78. Stuckey, with 14 receptions for 134 yards and threetouchdowns, is third on the team in receptions.

TOP OF THE LINE

The Jets are the first team to start four first-round draft picks onthe offensive line since the 2002 Steelers (Alan Faneca, WayneGandy, Jeff Hartings and Kendall Simmons).

The Jets “other” member of the offensive line has perhapsbeen one of the the most consistent Jets over the past four sea-sons. Brandon Moore, who first signed with the Jets as a freeagent DEFENSIVE tackle in 2002, learned how to play offen-sive guard by spending time on the practice squad and NFL Eu-rope in 2003 and was signed to the Jets active roster,10/22/03. GAME NOTES

CHARTING SHAUN ELLIS

Shaun Ellis is the longest-tenured player in the Jets organiza-tion. Ellis has played in 128 regular season games in nine sea-sons, fourth-most among Jets defensive linemen. He now trailsMark Gastineau (137 games) for third place. Ellis picked up asack in three of the first four games this season, moving his ca-reer total to 56.5 sacks, fourth in franchise history. Next on thelist is Gerry Philbin (1964-72), whose 64.5 sacks rank third.

RIVETING REVIS

Darrelle Revis, the second-year cornerback from Pittsburgh, leads the Jets in interceptions with three. He picked off KurtWarner twice, 9/28, including a 32-yard interception return forhis first career touchdown. In the opener, 9/7 at MIA, Revis in-tercepted Chad Pennington in the back of the end zone in thefinal 10 seconds of the game, outdueling Ted Ginn Jr. for theball to preserve the Jets 20-14 victory. Revis has 15 tacklesand four pass breakups this season.

RHODES TO SUCCESS

Fourth-year veteran Kerry Rhodes has started every game inhis career at the safety spot. Rhodes is fourth on the team with20 tackles, has three tackles-for-loss, a quarterback pressureand a pass breakup in the first four games.

Over the 2006-07 seasons, he led all NFL defensive backswith seven sacks and, in that same time period, he led the Jetsin take-aways (interceptions + fumbles forced) with 11.

BIG JENKS

Kris Jenkins, the eight-year veteran and three-time Pro Bowlerwhom the Jets acquired from CAR via trade, 2/29/08, hasplayed as advertised. Through four games, the nose tackle has11 tackles, four tackles-for-loss and a sack of NE’s Matt Cas-sel, 9/14. He blocked the fourth kick of his career in the firstquarter vs. ARI, 9/28, when he plunged through the middle ofthe line and got a hand on Neil Rackers’ 37-yard attempt. Jenk-ins play in the middle has been a big part of why the Jets stoodfourth through four weeks in the NFL in rushing yards per at-tempt (3.1) and fifth in rushing defense. Jenkins now has 21.5sacks in his NFL career.

ABOUT DAVID HARRIS

As a rookie in 2007, linebacker David Harris logged a team-leading 116 tackles, including 101 in the last nine games, afterstepping in for an injured Jonathan Vilma. He also registeredfive sacks, to share the team lead with Shaun Ellis. Harrisstarted 2008 with an 11-tackle performance at MIA, 9/7, andleads the team in tackles with 37.

SMART BARTON

Ten-year veteran Eric Barton, who is tied for second on theteam with 22 tackles this season, has been credited by CoachMangini for helping with the development of David Harris in2007, and for the ability to recognize formations and readplays. After Jonathan Vilma was injured last season, Bartonswitched inside linebacker positions to enable Harris to step into the other ILB slot. While Harris took over relaying the sig-nals from the sidelines, it was Barton who helped him makereads and calls. Barton had a solid year on the field as well, reg-istering 98 tackles, two sacks and an interception, including arare sack and interception on the same series vs. WAS,11/4/07.

BT LEADS SACK CHARGE

The Jets have registered 13 sacks this season. Bryan Thomashas led the way with four, including a career-high tying two ofhis ex-teammate Chad Pennington in the opener at MIA, 9/7.Thomas had two sacks in a game one other time in his career, getting David Carr vs HOU, 11/26/06. In 2008, Thomasnabbed Matt Cassel for his third sack, giving him 20.5 sacksin his career. Shaun Ellis has three sacks, Calvin Pace has 2.5sacks, David Bowens registered his first two sacks vs. ARI,9/28, Kris Jenkins has one sack and defensive back David Bar-rett, who split a sack with Pace of Cassel, got credit for a sackfor the first time in his nine-year career.

BARRETT’S RECORD SEASON

David Barrett earned the start at safety at SD, 9/22. Barrett, inhis ninth season in the NFL, had started 75 games in his ca-reer at cornerback. In his fifth season with the Jets, he hadstarted previously for the team in 36 games, all at cornerback.Barrett picked up an interception of Philip Rivers, the 18th ofhis career, and returned it 25 yards for his first career touch-down. Barrett's interception marked the eight consecutive sea-son in which he has recorded a pick, going back to 2001.

When Barrett recorded a half-sack of Matt Cassel vs. NE,9/14, it was his first appearance in the sack column in his 122NFL games. According to Elias, no player has gone further inhis career to record his first sack credit since sacks becamean official statistic in 1982.

Ten-year veteran David Bowens posted a two-sack game for thesecond time in his career when he dropped Kurt Warner twice,9/28. Both sacks were strip-sacks that led to turnovers, one re-covered by Bowens and the other by Calvin Pace, that pro-duced 11 points. Bowens other multi-sack game was vs. OAK,11/27/05 for MIA, when he sacked Kerry Collins twice.

BOWENS BREAK-THROUGH

Calvin Pace, who signed with the Jets after five years with theCardinals, is tied for second on the Jets with 22 tackles and isthird on the team with 2.5 sacks. Pace has been active in thefirst four games, with five pressures, three tackles-for-loss, onepass breakup, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.

August 14, 1959: The American Football League’s first organiza-tional meeting was held in Chicago under the leadership of LamarHunt of Dallas. Charter franchises were granted to New York andHarry Wismer; Dallas, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, Denver andHouston. After some shuffling of cities, the league established itsdivisional setup, grouping the Titans in the East with Boston, Buf-falo, Houston and placing Dallas, Denver, Los Angeles and Oak-land in the West.

About the Titans’ original owner, broadcasting legend Harry Wis-mer (from various sources):

A native of Port Huron, Michigan, Harry Wismer displayed great in-terest and prowess in sports at an early age, earning letters in foot-ball, basketball, and baseball at St. John’s Military Academy inDelafield, Wisconsin. He later played college football at both theUniversity of Florida and Michigan State University, his playing ca-reer ending at the latter school when he damaged a knee severelyduring a game against the University of Michigan. He then beganbroadcasting Michigan State sports on MSU’s radio station WKAR. In 1934 he was hired as the public-address announcer for the De-troit Lions, who were then owned by the same man, Dick Richards, who owned Detroit radio station WJR. Wismer soon began doing aten-minute daily radio show covering the Lions in addition to his PAduties, while continuing as a student at Michigan State.

In the late 1940s he provided the voice talent to numerous 16 mmcollege football films. Wismer often added the sound commentarylong after the games were over, and added a radio style commen-tary with sound effects such as referee whistles to recreate an au-thentic sound. He was owner of HarFilms, a short-lived NewOrleans based sportsfilm production company.

Wismer achieved the height of his fame as the voice of the Wash-ington Redskins. His first game for the Redskins was a most in-auspicious one, their 73-0 loss to the Chicago Bears’ great“Monsters of the Midway“ team in the 1940 NFL ChampionshipGame. At one point Wismer was a 25% owner of the club as well, with the majority of the stock being retained by founding ownerGeorge Preston Marshall. However, the relationship between thetwo had greatly degenerated by the mid-1950s over several issues.

In the early 1950s, he was involved in an early attempt to expandfootball into prime time network television, when ABC, now with arenewed interest in sports, broadcast an edited replay on Sundaynights of the previous day’s Notre Dame games, which were cutdown to 75 minutes in length by removing the time between plays, halftime, and even some of the more uneventful plays. (While thisformat was not successful in prime time, a similar presentation ofNore Dame football later became a staple of Sunday mornings formany years on CBS with Lindsey Nelson as the announcer.)

Also that season was the first attempt at prime time coverage of profootball, with Wismer at the microphone on the old DuMont Net-work. Unlike ABC’s Notre Dame coverage, DuMont’s NFL gamewas presented live on Saturday nights, but interest was not ade-quate to save the DuMont Network, which had by this point al-ready entered what would be a terminal decline (although it didmount a subsequent 1954 season of NFL telecasts, minus Wis-

mer, which proved to be one of its last regular programs).

In 1953, Wismer was spokesman for a syndicate interested in buy-ing the St. Louis baseball Cardinals from Fred Saigh, who eventu-ally sold the team to Anheuser-Busch. In June 1956, Wismer waslisted as a vice president and 25 percent stockholder of the Wash-ington Redskins on the NFL. He feuded with Marshall, the clubpresident. However, the relationship between the two had greatlydegenerated by the mid-1950s over several issues.

Nov. 22, 1959: The AFL held its first draft, lasting 33 rounds, then20 more rounds 10 days later. The New York Titans took NotreDame QB George Izo with their first overall pick. Izo signed withthe NFL Cardinals.

Dec. 18, 1959: Wismer hired Hall of Famer-to-be Sammy Baughas the first coach of the New York Titans at $28,000 a year. Later, the Titans show some scouting prowess, finding flanker Don May-nard, a free agent after playing one season in the CFL, who be-came the first Titans player to sign a contract. Wismer gainedaccess to New York’s Polo Grounds for Titans home games and es-tablished his team’s colors of blue and gold.

Head Coach Sammy Baugh, on April 26, 1960:“We’re going to have a real team. We’ll start training up in NewHampshire with about 70 boys, none of whose names, probably, are known to the general public. But what’s in a name? Give meboys like we have signed, most of them 200 lbs. and over andmost of them quick and I’ll have a football team. Steve Sebo, our general manager, who’s been coaching some him-self and knows talent when he sees it, informs me, for instance, that we will have nine outstanding quarterback prospects. He hasan imposing list of halfbacks, fullbacks and linemen too.I don’t mean to give the impression that the Titans, in their firstyear, will be the greatest football team ever organized. We’ll haveto build and experiment and change. But we’ll have a football teamat the start that’ll be worth watching.” –From the NY Times

From the NY Times:DURHAM, N. H., July 9 – Twenty-six somber men arrived herefrom New York tonight on a bus named Desire. It was an odd as-sortment – some crew-cut, some shaggy-headed, some sloppy fat, some hard as anthracite. But each had the same goal, elusive asit may be: professional football glory. These were 26 of the 103 men who have been invited to the train-ing camp of the New York Titans, one of the eight teams in thenew American Football League. Some of the men who took theseven-and-one-half-hour bus trip to the University of New Hamp-shire, where practice opens tomorrow afternoon, have been out ofcollege for four or five years or longer. Some never finished college. Some who have had tryouts with National Football League teams, were dropped before the coach even knew their last names. One ortwo, who have had experience in the N.F.L., but were overshad-owed there, hope to become stars overnight in the American Foot-ball League. And others, who have toiled on the sand lots of seasonafter rocky season, think they will become another Johnny Unitas.

This could be a great opportunity for these dreamers, or the endof a fruitless search. They know that if they don’t make it now, it’s

back to the sand lots and oblivion. They also know that by Sept.11, when the Titans open their season, only thirty-three of the 103players will have survived the exhaustion and pain of two-a-daypractice sessions and the elbows and pressure of the four-gameexhibition tour.

As in other pro football camps, there will be those who will notsurvive one day. They will steal out of camp late at nightand hitcha ride home, rather than ask for their fare, because they couldn’ttake it. And the tream will have ended.

Some Boys May Cry“It’s better this way,” say Sammy Baugh, the head coach, who

was sitting in the front seat of the bus. “Some of these boys will beeating dirt from the first day, but they won’t quit. Then you have totell them, and some go away and cry.”

Only three or four of the players making the trip knew each otherwhen they met at the Manhattan Hotel at 10:00 o’clock this morn-ing. The lobby looked like a reception center at Fort Dix. Those whowere alone with their thoughts – the big and hard, the big and fat,and the tall and skinny – rested a foot on cheap piece of luggage,or held overnight and duffle bags in their hands.

Sometimes, when they thought nobody was looking, they staredat another player five or ten feet away as if to say, “Maybe he’s theguy I’ve gotta beat out. He looks tough. I wonder if he’s as worriedas me.”

“That’s how it is at the beginning,” said Sid Youngelman, a 260-pound tackle with five years experience in the N.F.L. “They’re allsuspicious and nervous and maybe even scared of the next guyuntil that first scrimmage. Everything’s okay after they knock thedaylights out of each other.”

At 10:10 Baugh, a former Washington, Redskins’ great quarter-back, breezed into the lobby. He went over to the players, most ofwhom he never had met, extended his had and said, “I’m Sambo;I’m Sambo.” The players snapped to attention as if they were beingaddressed by their C.O.

Worhman Is ConfidentBill Worhman, a 27-year-old halfback from the University of

South Carolina and Bloomingdale, N.J., remained in a corner withhis wife Delores and their two children. He is 6 feet, 2 inches and195 pounds. He had a short trial with the Cleveland Browns in1955 and was head coach at Dickinson High School in New Jer-sey last year. He quit his job because he said he was sure he wouldmake the team.

“I can always get a coaching job,” the blond athlete said. “But Ican’t always get a shot at something like this. I can’t get footballout of my system. I have to find out definitely if I have it. I think Ido.”

The players boarded the bus. “Scott,” Mrs. Mrs. Worhman saidto her son. “Hold Valerie’s hand. Daddy’s going away. Wave tohim.”

Worhman was sitting on the opposite side of the bus and he did-n’t see them.

The players found seats, but few talked to the man beside them. Two who found something to talk about were Bob Mischak, a 242-pound guard who played for West Point and the New York Giants, and Mike Friedberg, a 250-pound tackle from Philadelphia.

“I feel I can make this outfit,” Friedberg said. “I’ve been around.”

Mischak said, “I enjoyed my stay with the Giants, but money’sa little better here, and the conditions are, too.”

Youngelman, Mischak and Friedberg were among the most im-pressive looking specimens, but there were two or three playersaboard who looked like they couldn’t qualify for Brooklyn Tech’sJ.V.

Sept. 11, 1960: The Titans make a successful debut at the PoloGrounds, beating Buffalo in the rain, 27-3, before a crowd of10,250 (5,727 paid).

Nov. 24, 1960: The First ThanksgivingWhen Titans’ founder Harry Wismer announced the 1960 sched-ule, he trumpeted the Thanksgiving Day game as an annual fixtureto the AFL landscape. The victory for the Titans that first Thanks-giving Day was the first of three straight for the franchise, which inbecoming the Jets in 1963 gave up the traditional spot on the cal-endar. The Jets have only appeared twice since on Turkey Day, los-ing to the Lions in 1972 and 1985. Now, 47 years later, New Yorkand Dallas renew the Thanksgiving Day rivalry that almost was.

TITANS 41, TEXANS 35 From legendary Dick Young in the New York Daily News“A piping-hot Turkey Day football feast, stuffed with 76 juicy points, whetted the appetites of 14,344 late diners at the Polo Grounds,as the Titans outgorged the Dallas Texans, 41-35. This was thehighest-scoring game of the infant AFL, and so typical of its wide-open play; replete with long passes, longer runs, and virtually de-void of aerial defense...Most responsible for the satisfying PG finalewas Al Dorow, the hairless wower. He fired the ball 301 yards via21 completions in 33 heaves – mostly to Don Maynard and ArtPowell, the most sure-handed duo in the loop. Maynard, the Giantreject, was particularly exciting with ten grabs good for 179yards…It seemed, with the fourth period well under way, that theTitans had a breeze. Maynard’s incredible pass clutching, with de-fenders clinging to his thin neck, had moved New York ahead, 34-13. Then the Texans came on with a rush as big as all Alaska. Theyscored three TDs within a space of seven minutes – and in betweentheir second and third scores, the Titans also put one across. That’sthe type of game it was.”

NEW YORK TITANS TIMELINE

Post 1960 Season: Guard Bob Mischak was named All-AFL, be-coming the first all-league selection in franchise history.

Sept. 24, 1961: Dick Christy starred in the Titans’ 35-28 home-opening win over Denver with 70- and 64-yard punt return touch-downs, still tied for the most punt return scores in a game in leaguehistory.

From the NY Times: “Al Dorow, the New York Titans Spartan quarterback, was ahuman target for the Denver Broncos. The target suffered, so didthe pursuers. For while every black helmet and padded white shoulder at thePolo Grounds was aimed at Dorow’s Adam’s apple, two of the Ti-tans less herculean performers – Dick Christy and Don Maynard –became as elusive as Lamont Cranston, The Shadow. …Christy, who had trials with five pro football teams before he joinedthe Titans last month, slipped tackles like Houdini while scoring ona 69-yard punt return with five and a half minutes gone. Twelve minutes later, after Maynard proved during a 34-yard pass-run scoring play that he could run with the ball as well as catch it,Christy had another opportunity. The left halfback, who has a rep-utation in pro football for being as good as he wants to be, appar-ently wanted to be good again. And he was. He took a punt on New York’s 36-yard line, eluded four tacklers, cut to the sideline, eluded two more frantic clutches. Sixty-fouryards and a conversion later the Titans had a 21-7 lead. With four minutes left in the half, Maynard performed even morebrilliantly than he had earlier. He took a pass from Dorow on theDenver 25 and completed the 39-yard touchdown play by zigginga tackler here, zagging a tackler there. So at the end of the first half the Titans led, 28-7, and Dorow wasstill in one piece.…When Dorow left the field, limping slightly, he did so with theproud expression of a man who had been a human target and hadwon.”

Dec. 2, 1961: Minnesota QB Sandy Stephens was the Titans’ firstpick of the 1962 draft.

Dec. 18, 1961: Harry Wismer named Clyde “Bulldog” Turner tosucceed Baugh as the Titans’ head coach, then when Baughprotested, agreed to pay off his former coach’s contract and keepTurner.

From the NY Times:“A 280-pound Texas cattle rancher became head coach of the NewYork Titans. He is Clyde (Bulldog) Turner, generally regarded asthe greatest center in the history of professional football. He wasinducted into the Hall of Fame in 1960.The former Chicago Bear succeeds another Texas rancher, SammyBaugh, who guided the Titans to second-place and third-place fin-ishes in the Eastern Division of the AFL in 1960 and 1961, re-spectively.Baugh’s original three-year contract still has a year to run. He willremain with the club as a consultant for the same salary he re-ceived as coach — $20,000 a year.Turner signed a two-year pact calling for $20,000 a season. He

said he had “the greatest respect” for Baugh and would be happyto have him on his staff. “I don’t know how he’d feel about that though,” Turner added. The deposed coach was unavailable for comment. However, aweek ago when Harry Wismer, the Titans president, threatened todemote him to an assistant coach, Sammy retorted: “That’s won-derful. I’d like to be an assistant at these prices.”Sept. 9, 1962: Lee Grosscup, the Giants’ backup quarterback in1960-61, was signed just before the season opener, got the start-ing nod and directed a 28-17 victory over Oakland.

Nov. 8, 1962: Wismer was unable to meet his payroll and the AFLassumed the costs of running the Titans until the end of the sea-son.

March 28, 1963: A five-man syndicate — David A. “Sonny”Werblin, Townsend B. Martin, Leon Hess, Donald C. Lillis andPhilip H. Iselin — purchased the New York franchise for $1 mil-lion.

Werblin: “We plan to give New York the football we know. We’ll gofirst class all the way. We still have the legal details to complete butby next week we will start work to obtain the best managementand playing material. Our goal is to make this the best footballteam we know.”

April 15, 1963: The new owners made two very important an-nouncements on this day: A new nickname for the franchise (Jets)and a new general manager/head coach, Weeb Ewbank.

Sonny Werblin, the club’s president and CEO, renamed the teamthe Jets. The reasons were twofold. At the time, the United Stateswas entering the “Space” or “Jet” age. Commercial airlines were fill-ing the air and soon there would be men walking on the moon. Also the Jets’ new venue, Shea Stadium, would be located inFlushing Meadows, between LaGuardia and Idlewild (later re-named Kennedy) airports. Hence, the name “New York Jets.”

Gothams, Borros and Dodgers were the other leading contenders.Dodgers was discarded because the baseball people were not infavor. Borros (a pun on boroughs) because there was fear the teamwould be called the jackasses, and Gothams was dismissed be-cause someone said that it would be shortened to Goths – “andyou know they weren’t such nice people.” -NY Times, April 16,1963

Why the change from Navy Blue and Gold to Green and White?“New York is a green-conscious town, from the dividing stripe downFifth Avenue to the verdant hills and dales of Westchester to thebeautifully landscaped parks of Long Island,” said Ted Deglin, aclub spokesman. “Through the ages, green had always signifiedhope, freshness and high spirits.” -NY Times, April 16, 1963

After he was named the 14th full-time head coach of theNew York Jets on January 17, 2006, Eric Mangini led the Jetsto a 10-6 record and a trip to the AFC Wild Card Game.Mangini’s Jets used an innovative, multiple-formation offensethat emphasized the strengths of his players in getting the mostout of his offense. The defense morphed each week dependingon the opponent. Mangini’s efforts were recognized when hewas named AFC Coach of the Year by the Kansas City Com-mittee of 101.

Mangini is in his second stint with the Jets, having previouslyserved on Bill Parcells’ staff from 1997-1999, where he workedprimarily as the defensive assistant/quality control coach re-sponsible for advance opponent film breakdowns and analysis.Between his stints with the Jets, Mangini spent six seasons withthe New England Patriots under head coach Bill Belichick. Hewas the defensive backs’ coach for five years before he was pro-moted to defensive coordinator for the 2005 season.

Mangini played nose tackle and earned four letters (1989-90, ‘92-93) at Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT. Hebegan his NFL career as a ballboy with the Cleveland Brownsin 1994. He then moved into an intern position in the Browns’public relations department where his efforts were noticed bythen-Cleveland head coach Belichick, who offered Mangini aposition on his Browns’ coaching staff in 1995. When theBrowns relocated to Baltimore in 1996, Mangini moved withthe franchise and joined Ted Marchibroda’s staff.

Mangini was born on January 19, 1971, in Hartford, CT. Hehosts a one-day Football Fundamentals mini-camp in Hartfordeach year giving athletes in grades 8-12 a chance to be taughtby some of the NFL’s top players and coaches. Proceeds fromthe camp benefit The Carmine and Frank Mangini (CFM) Foun-dation.

Mangini and his wife, Julie, have two sons, Jake and Luke, and a third due any day as this goes to press.

After establishing himself as a record-setting NFL defensivecoordinator, Marvin Lewis was named the ninth head coach inBengals history January 14, 2003. Lewis is in his sixth seasonas Bengals head coach. Only Paul Brown and Sam Wyche havehad longer tenures (eight seasons each), or more career victo-ries. Lewis’ record over five previous campaigns is 42-38 in reg-ular season, 0-1 in postseason and 42-39 overall. He is 13wins behind Paul Brown (55-59-1) and 22 wins behind Wyche(64-68). He is one of three Bengals coaches with a winningrecord, joining Forrest Gregg (34-27) and Bill “Tiger” Johnson(18-15).

With the departure of Brian Billick as head coach at Balti-more, Lewis enters 2008 as the senior head coach in the AFCNorth Division. Overall in the NFL, only eight coaches havelonger current tenures with their teams. Lewis entered 2007 asthe only Bengals head coach never to experience a losing sea-son, but the ‘07 club got off to an injury-plagued 2-6 start andcould rally to only a 7-9 finish. The 2005 Bengals won the AFCNorth title.

Prior to his arrival, Lewis was the Washington Redskins’ de-fensive coordinator (2002), serving as an assistant head coachin addition to his coordinator’s role. He spent six seasons(1996-2001) as defensive coordinator with the BaltimoreRavens, a tenure that included a Super Bowl victory. In the2000 season, Lewis’ Baltimore defense set the NFL record forfewest points allowed in a 16-game campaign (165) and hasbeen widely considered as oone of the best NFL defenses of alltime. The 970 rushing yards allowed was the fewest in NFLhistory for a 16-game season. The Ravens’ four shutouts werethe most in the NFL since 1976. Prior to joining Baltimore, hespent four seasons (1992-95) with Pittsburgh as linebackerscoach.

Lewis earned All-Big Sky Conference honors as a linebackerat Idaho State (1978-1980), and saw action at quarterbackand free safety. He received his Bachelor’s Degree in physicaleducation from Idaho State in 1981, and earned his Master’sDegree in athletic administration in 1982. Inducted into IdahoState’s Hall of Fame in 2001. He began his coaching career atIdaho State (1981-84). The team finished 12-1 during his firstseason on the staff and won the then-NCAA Division I-AA cham-pionship. Lewis was also the linebackers coach at Long BeachState (1985-86), New Mexico (1987-89), and Pittsburgh(1990-91).

He was born September 23, 1958 in McDonald, PA. Lewisand his wife, Peggy, have a daughter, Whitney, and a son, Mar-cus.

The last time the Jets changed training camp andheadquarter locations occurred before the 1968 season, whenthe organization moved fromPeekskill Military Academy to Hof-stra University.

Here’s how The New YorkTimes reported the New York Jetslast change of venue, 3/20/68:

“The Jets will find a con-siderable improvement in their liv-ing quarters at Hofstra. Instead ofbeing housed in a two-storywooden house, they will reside inone of six modern dormitories Hofstra has constructed in thelast two years.

“ ‘Our dormitories are all air-conditioned and the Jetswill have telephones in their rooms,’ said Howdy Myers, theHofstra athletic director and football coach. ‘We have three foot-ball fields, two of them fully marked. Our stadium seats 8,000should the Jets decide to charge admission for certain scrim-mage games.’ ”

After getting used to their new surroundings, the 1968Jets went 11-3 in the regular season, capturing the AFL East-

That team, led byHall of Famers Joe Namath andDon Maynard, AFL All-Stars AlAtkinson, Verlon Biggs, EmersonBoozer, John Elliott, Dave Herman,Winston Hill, Gerry Philbin, GeorgeSauer and Jim Turner, as well asSuper Bowl heroes Matt Snell andRandy Beverly, went on to defeatthe Raiders in the AFL Champi-onship game, 27-23 at Shea Sta-

The New York Jets take great pride in playing an active role in making a year-round commitment to our community.

Programs funded by the New York Jets Foundation touch the lives of countless young men and women in the tri-state area. Re-alogy Corporation, a premier global provider of real estate and relocation services, and its subsidiary com-pany Burgdorff Realtors ERA are title sponsors for all of the Jets' community relations programs. Overthe past eight years, the Jets and their charitable foundation have donated or contributed more than $8million to promote youth health, fitness and education, particularly in disadvantaged communities.

From fighting childhood obesity through the Generation Jets: Be Lean & Green initiative to launching afootball team in a Harlem high school, urging students to eat right and move more, and supporting theefforts of the Alliance for Lupus Research, the New York Jets invest in programs that make a differencein the lives of others. In addition to the Jets Foundation, which supports our own extensive youth initiatives, the Jets partner withnumerous established charitable organizations and participate in causes sponsored by the NFL.

Florham Park Residents are Seeing Green

On Oct. 7 from 4-6 pm, players and representatives from the New York Jets will take part in the NFL’s annual Hometown Hud-dle, an NFL-wide day of service with United Ways across the nation, by renovating a park in their new hometown - Florham Park,NJ.

Jets players James Dearth, Vernon Gholston, Erik Ainge, Dustin Keller, Dwight Lowery, Jehuu Caulcrick, Kenwin Cummings,Ropati Pitoitua and Marcus Henry will conduct a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate thecompletion of renovations to Beechcrest Park, located off Joyce Court in Florham Park. Theentire project, estimated at close to $150,000, includes a fitness cluster in the play area, installation of a new basketball court, swings, park benches, a backstop, and trash recep-tacles. Sponsors for the project include the New York Jets, Borough of Florham Park, Realogy Corporation, Burgdorff Realtors ERA,NFL Charities, and United Way of Morris County.

“For years this municipal property was sadly in disrepair. Missing baskets, dilapidated tennis courts, antiquated fencing andbleachers for the baseball-soccer field, and not nearly enough fitness equipment did not allow kids to have any meaningful op-portunities to play and use Beechcrest Park,” commented Scott Eveland, Mayor of Florham Park. “Happily that is no longer thecase, thanks to the park improvements brought about through the 2008 "Hometown Huddle" cooperation by the Jets, United Wayof Morris County, and the Borough of Florham Park. Together we can proudly celebrate this new asset for our community. We lookforward to beneficial relationships between our town, our United Way charitable umbrella organization, and our "hometown" NewYork Jets Football team for many years to come.”

To promote youth health and fitness under the NFL’s Play 60 campaign, Jets players along with volunteers from Burgdorff Real-tors ERA, Realogy Corporation, Florham Park Falcons Youth Football and United Way of Morris County will help complete the fit-ness zone project, including final installation, assembly, and painting. Then, players will play flag football with the Florham ParkFalcons, a team of second graders all hailing from Florham Park. A few eighth grade players will be on hand to help out as well.Designed to tackle childhood obesity, NFL Play 60 focuses on the health and wellness of young fans by encouraging them to beactive for at least 60 minutes a day.

“The Jets are proud to call Florham Park home and look forward to getting more involved in this great community,” said Matt Hig-gins, Jets Executive Vice President of Business Operations. “The Jets and our charitable foundation are committed to promotingyouth health, fitness and education.
