The New Kemah Lions Club Celebrated the forming of the club by having their charter night, several Lions commented that it was a charter night to remember. Kemah located south east of Houston nestled on the Galveston bay is a great location for a noon club. On May the 18th at the Elks Lodge in Kemah 80+ Lions joined in the celebration. Lions Clubs from all over Texas came to celebrate, eat and support with donations, 50/50 drawing and door prizes. PID Lion “Mike” Butler was the guest speaker. Follow us on Facebook.

By: Leo Lily Jameson Wow! Have the Leo’s been busy this month! First off, we had 7 Leo’s attend the MD2 Texas Leo Council meeting at the Bergstrom Hilton on Saturday June 1st. Cheyenne, Marquia, Blake, Madeline, Emily,Jocelyn and myself all attended workshops and networked with other Leo’s. Our Leo’s club had thelargest attendees and were also known as the “green shirt” club! We gave a presentation with our computer to highlight our club and the other members were so impressed, they asked us help them do the same sort of slideshow to highlight their club. We have new District officers that were elected that day, they are: Madeline 1st VP, Emily is 2nd VP, Jocelynn is our Tail Twister and I am the District Secretary. I am also the State Secretary! Our training will be in Kerrville, Tx Aug 3rd at the State Leo Conference Planning Committee Session. The goal for the meeting is to plan the LEO State Leadership Conference to be held in San Antonio November 8-10, 2013 which we plan
On June 9th, we had 5 Leo’s attend the opening of the Texas Lion’s Camp. Our job was to serve the campers and the staff homemade goodies as well as sno cones. We all had a blast and it was such a joy to see the smiles on the faces of the campers! They were so excited! The camp counselors were very enthusiastic and loved my moms little Lion cupcakes! We can’t wait to go back next year and help out again! In all honesty, I know I speak for all the Leo’s that attended that day, Emily, Madeline, Cheyenne and Preston, as well as myself...we loved getting personal with the workers and found out they were from all over the world! We got to talk to girls from Australia, Wales and of course, all over Texas! We were all very touched by the campers and their adaptation to their disabilities, it was really our “reward” to help the lives of the children that day, it is an experience we will never forget.

Here’s some information on one of our favorite projects during 2012-13. We were approached by the ACE Program at our school for ideas for a joint project. There was a plot of ground in front of our Fine Arts Building that needed some fresh planting, and I am an avid fan of native plants. The resulting garden was a most enjoyable collaboration between Harlingen High School South Leo Club, our sponsoring Lions Club—the Harlingen Amigas Lions Club, the ACE afterschool program, and Mike Heep Nursery. Ramiro Rodriguez of ACE set up the advance work to contract for plants and materials, Mike Heep created a beautiful landscaping plan and set up the materials, and Leos and Lions gathered on February 23 to plant the garden. Mike taught the Lions and Leos some very easy planting techniques, and it took exactly 2 hours and 11 minutes of actual labor in the garden to accomplish the result you see in the photograph. With a couple of recent rainstorms our plants are thriving.

Lions Joe Conger and Terry Hickman presented a check in the amount of $640 to Tracy Wancho, Special Olympics Head of Delegation for Lago Vista Independent School District (LVISD). The Point Venture Lions donation funded two athletes who attended the Texas State Special Olympics in Arlington, TX, May 23-25. LVISD sent 6 athletes to compete in the Special Olympics. Pictured are athletes Kaitie Malone and Alex Woodhull. Kaitie and Alex competed in the 100 meter dash and javelin throw. Alex also competed in the 4x100 meter relay and had the great honor of carrying the torch into the stadium to begin the games.

This year marked the 9th annual Point Venture Golf Tournament and it was a successful, fun tournament for all participating players held at Point Venture Golf Course. Over $20,000 was raised for our charities and projects that includes scholarships to Lago Vista High School graduating seniors. The Club financially supports the Texas School for the Blind & Visually Impaired, the Texas Lions Camp in Kerrville which host summer camp sessions for disabled children who enjoy swimming, horseback riding, art and music projects. We also make donations to the Texas Service Dog, Inc in Dripping Springs and annually, sponsor Lago Vista students to attend and participate in the the Texas State Special Olympics competition. We have used funds to make improvements to the PV Community Room and our park. Other prizes were given out for longest drive, closes to the line and longest putt. The golfers enjoyed breakfast before the tournament, cold drinks and snacks throughout the day while playing golf and after the tournament a delicious meal of brats, hamburgers, beans, chips and ice cream. Golfers went home with a goodie bag and a nice door prize. (See picture attached)
Do you know the difference between lunch and dinner? Apparently the definition of this meal varies depending where you hail from! Canyon Lake Noon Lions ordered 145 pizzas to serve what we thought was lunch to the campers at Texas Lions Camp in Kerrville on Friday, June 21st. However, upon arriving we found a San Angelo Lions Club in full swing cooking fajitas for the campers! Oops! Following frantic phone calls, our pizza was rescheduled for delivery for the dinner (supper?) and the Camp personnel agreed to serve the evening meal. Noon Lions then made the 40 mile trip to the YO Ranch where we had reservations and spent a great day of fellowship. Saturday we had a guided tour of the 30,000 acre YO, home to many diverse exotic game species, where we fed cookies to the giraffes. Lions headed back to Canyon Lake after lunch (or dinner, depending on your perspective!)

Galveston Lions have sponsored and confirmed 16 children with diabetes to attend Texas Lions Camp for the 2013 summer session. The club chairperson Lion Juan Pena sponsored 17 children for the summer of 2012, and is planning on expanding outreach beyond diabetes. Congratulations to Lion Juan Pena who joins the ranks as a new Jack Wiech fellow.

Second Annual Strides Walk event Pg. 12
Lions of Southeast Texas are hosting the Second Annual Strides Walk event at Lamar University’s Ty Terrell Track on Saturday, November 9, 2013. This is a District program. Last year we had nineteen clubs involved and raised ten thousand dollars for Texas Lions Camp. Imagine what we can do this year. This year’s walk will be a 5K with a 1K for the kids and all Clubs in the District are asked to be involved. We need sponsors and participants. Adults will be charged $20 and children under 15 will be charged $10. Sponsorships are available at various amounts to clubs, companies, and individuals. Please see the enclosed form. All proceeds will go to the Texas Lions Camp. Diabetes affects many people in our area and is of great concern in our local communities. Many in our communities have learned to live with this disease and manage it. Many still need our help in becoming aware of the symptoms and treatments available. We ask that each club help with this Strides Walk. Booth space is available to Lions Clubs for $10.00. Lions of Texas are once again answering a call for help. This time, however, it’s a long distance call from Lions in Tuticorin, India. One of the world’s oldest seaports with a population of more then 400,000, Tuticorin is also one of the world’s most impoverished cities. PDG Suraj Bagala of Lions District 322 B1 has appealed to Lions of MD-2 for 160 personal energy transportation (PET) vehicles. And he needs them ASAP. San Antonio Northside Lions and College Station Noon Lions are working with PET affiliate workshops in the Alamo City and Bryan to build the vehicles. They hope to ship the PETs in July. Building the PETs is one thing. Getting them to their destination 9,416 miles away is another. Money is needed to purchase and ship the 40-foot container from Bryan to Tuticorin. The total cost is estimated at $5,500. Lions of India and Texas will share the cost, meaning organizers need Texas Lions to contribute $2,750. (Con’t)

“A personal energy transporter is a wheelchair-type vehicle used by persons in third-world countries who use their arms and upper body strength to power themselves and cargo across rough terrain where standard wheelchairs cannot go,” said Lion Dick Witherite of the College Station Noon Lions. Lions of India District 324 B4 have 4,300 Lions in 113 clubs who will distribute the PETs. PDG Bagala will handle import and clearance with the Indian government. The United Nations estimates 22 million people worldwide have lost the use of their legs because of landmines, disease, accident or injury. Of these, 15 million are bedridden or in wheelchairs. That leaves seven million needing transport. To help with the shipping costs, send a check payable to the Brazos Valley P.E.T. Project, Inc., to the organization at 506 E. 28th St., Bryan, TX 77803. The MD-2 Council of Governors for 2013-14 invite you to attend the greatest State Convention on record aboard a Carnival cruise ship on May 15-19, 2014. Hosted by District 2-S4, the ship will depart from Galveston on Thursday after-noon at 4:00 p.m. and return to port on Monday morning at 8:00 a.m. stated PDG Lewis Gardner, Council Chairman for 2013-14. This is going to be a family oriented convention with many seminars available for the regular Lion, according to DGE Ron Martin, Convention Chairman. This convention will be different in that there will be no meal functions, according to Gardner. Most of the general sessions will be held in the mornings, with the afternoons devoted to family activities and fun. Professional entertainment will be available each night. There will be no Lions activities on the day we will be in port, added Martin. This will be a four night, 11 meal (24 hour buffet) cruise. Bring the kids, grand-kids, friends, fellow Lions. Carnival has opened all of 2013 for reservations at this time and it is estimated within the next 6 weeks they will open the first half of 2014.
