The NXplorers program is funded by Shell and was designed in collaboration with Scitech, Perth. The program provided students with resources and time in class to develop their critical thinking and problem-solving skills as they worked collaboratively on small team projects focused on addressing issues of sustainability and food security in the local community. The project gave students the chance to discuss and think about the environment they will be living in for their future and their individual and collective impact on the world. The program brought together aspects of the curriculum students had been learning in both Science and HaSS throughout Year 9. Some of the ideas worked on included increased solar power plants, the use of hydroponics to improve food security, the utilisation of wind energy during natural disasters and the implementation of wave energy farms on coastal towns to provide more sustainable power options. On September 23, students showcased their final group projects at Nyamba Buru Yawuru, receiving some very positive feedback from the broader community. We would like to thank the Year 9 students for their proactive participation in tackling big issues in their projects and we are excited to see a group of talented and enthused young students becoming increasingly passionate about providing solutions to some of the challenges that our future society faces. Mathew Burt I Principal

Ngaji Gurrijin, Welcome back to Term 4. I hope that you all enjoyed the two-week break and returned to school feeling refreshed and ready to be the best that you can be for the final school weeks of 2019.

We have kicked off the term with our focus on the Year 12s as they finish their schooling with us, we say farewell and they put their last preparations in place for their final exams. The Year 10 and Year 11 students will also sit their exams soon and final assessments for Years 7, 8 and 9 are well underway. We also will be welcoming a new cohort of Year 7 students for 2020 and look forward to presenting our school to them on their up-and-coming Orientation day.

Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Bili Money and Lathan Sebastian, having recently being selected as Broome Senior High School Head Boy and Head Girl for 2020. Bili and Lathan will be great representatives for the student body and the school; I look forward to working with them both in 2020.

Ms Hustler in the running for literary book awardsCongratulations to our very own teacher Hakea Hustler who's book Black Cockatoo (Magabala 2018) co-written with Carl Merrison has recently been nominated for the Queensland Literary Award and Speech Therapy Book of the Year. Winners of both awards will be announced soon in November. Black Cockatoo is about a young Aboriginal girl from a remote community in the Kimberley. She is saddened by the loss of her brother as he distances himself from the family. She feels powerless to change the things she sees around her, until one day she rescues her totem animal, the dirran black cockatoo, and soon discovers her own inner strength. A wonderful small tale on the power of standing up for yourself, culture and ever-present family ties. The novella also recently won Honour Book in The Children's

Book Council of Australia (CBCA) awards and has been studied in schools across Australia. Hakea and Carl also recently signed a contract with Magabala Books for their latest manuscript Tracks of the Missing to be published in 2021. Hakea is the English, Maths and Health teacher in the Year 7 Broome Girls Academy Engagement Class. She has loved sharing her story writing experience with the students in the class and is very active helping them craft their own stories.

A healthy rivalry encourages staff and student participation

The annual Staff vs Student Soccer match took place on the first week back of Term 4. A fearsome student team co-captained by Shamayne Tigulu and Ulani Hayter Otaola appreciated the chance to complete against the staff team captained by the always inspirational Ben Kenney. Everyone had a lot of fun and it was a great opportunity for the students to engage with staff outside of the classroom. The game ended up a 2-2 draw with goals from Mr Beatty and Ms Gibson for the staff team and for the students the scorers were Mati Cameron and Lachlan Bonner.

Year 9 student Jon Moschion has joined the Radio Goolarri 99.7fm team as a junior volunteer presenter with a new radio show called Jonno’s Jukebox. Jon can be heard over the airwaves every Friday at 6pm and is joined by some of his Broome Senior High School mates with some great interviews. Jon is naturally talented on radio and is never lost for words. His show can also be heard on the Radio Goolarri facebook page and on Soundcloud. We are very excited to have Jon as part of the Radio Goolarri broadcast team.

Kimberley Girl facilitates positive personal developmentCongratulations to Year 11 student, Tecaylah Lawford who was one of 11 young women from around the Kimberley region to progress to the Kimberley and Pilbara Girl Finals over the school holidays. Goolarri Media Chief Operations Officer and founder of the Kimberley Girl Program, Kira Fong, said; "Tecaylah participated in two weeks of intensive professional and personal development workshops and leadership training, with the facilitators praising her on her overall capacity to overcome challenges, adapt to the environment and engage in the learning process. Tecaylah was an absolute pleasure to work with, especially in the photoshoots which saw her awarded with the title for Most Photogenic. Congratulations Tecaylah and we look forward to seeing where you will take yourself in the future." The Kimberley Girl Program began in 2004 as a valuable initiative targeting young indigenous women between the ages of 16 and 25. Each year, girls engage in workshops and attend events that address contemporary issues, helping participants to overcome the impact of social, economic and isolation disadvantages. The main aim of the program is to instigate positive change in the personal and professional capacity of young indigenous women, directing them to make positive life choices and forge constructive pathways.

School exchange day program a highlight for the JLE students.Emily Criddle I H&SS teacherThe Japanese Learning Experience (JLE) ran from September 10 to 20 this year and was an exciting and successful trip for all. We visited Tokyo, Hiroshima and Kyoto and enjoyed a variety of experiences from each place. Tokyo, being the most populous city in the world, was a ‘hustle and bustle’ city that left our Broome students wide-eyed and gaping-mouthed with its busy and colourful streets, shrines and temples, cafes, train stations and shopping streets.

We arrived in Hiroshima via a bullet train. This historic city gave a calm presence that encouraged the JLE group to consider and embrace the history of the atomic bomb and the experiences of the people. A big highlight of the trip was the school exchange day program at Honkawa Elementary School in Hiroshima, where students exchanged notes and details and worked hard to get to know each other through language barriers. Kyoto is a beautiful city that boasts beautiful architecture and stunning shrines and, of course, Universal Studios. It was a whirlwind of a 10-day trip that everyone will surely remember.
