NEWS AND HEALTH EVENTS
World Teachers’ Day Friday 25th October
Most countries around the world celebrate World Teachers’ Day on October 5. However, as this date usually falls during the Australian school holidays, we celebrate World Teachers’ Day on the last Friday of October instead. In 2019, World Teachers’ Day celebrated teachers with the UNESCO theme, “Young Teachers: The future of the Profession.” The day provided the occasion to celebrate the teaching profession worldwide, to take stock of achievements, and to address some of the issues central for attracting and keeping the brightest minds and talents in the profession. We know that the LLW@S program is an additional focus for teachers which we hope enhances teaching and learning experiences for all. Thanks for the efforts you make to promote a healthy school environment at your school.

Maths ‘N’ Movement Workshop recap
During Term 3, 26 teachers attended the Maths N Movement Workshop at North Ryde presented by Rachel McCann.
Teachers learnt a number of ways to integrate movement and fundamental movement skills into teaching maths
concepts of fractions, probability, chance and addition. One teacher commented, “This workshop was excellent as we
got to do more and was very relevant. Added bonus of free resources.”
A fun afternoon was had by all!

RESOURCES AND QUICK LINKS
Link between physical activity, behaviour and learning outcomes
Are you looking for a simple approach to use in your classroom to improve behavioural and learning outcomes? Classroom based physical activity might be of interest to you! Classroom based physical activity is a simple and practical way to incorporate physical activity into your classroom, with clear links to the curriculum. It has been shown to have a positive impact on your students’ academic outcomes, social and emotional skills, intrapersonal skills and behaviour. It’s also a highly effective approach to use with students with learning or behavioural needs. We are currently offering schools support on practical ways to build physical activity into the classroom environment, including a NESA accredited workshop called ‘Integrating physical activity into the classroom’. To find out more contact your LLW@School Health Promotion Officer or email: [email protected]
Brain Break Corner Brain breaks are a quick and energising way of changing the physical and mental state of our students (and teachers) by activating, energising, stimulating or calming brains and bodies.
Try this Brain Break in your classroom: ‘Air writing’ Formation: Standing at desks or in small groups Stage: Early Stage 1 – Stage 2 Equipment: None 1. Students begin by moving on the spot or around the room using an activity like
jumping, marching, skipping, twisting, hopping or galloping.

3. Students will draw the letter, number, word or shape in the air using their hand, arm, leg, head, elbow, knee, bottom or any combination of body parts.
4. Once completed the teacher calls out a new activity like jumping, marching, skipping, twisting, hopping or galloping.
5. Teacher calls out another letter, number, word or shape and students stop the activity e.g. circle.
6. Students will draw the letter, number, word or shape in the air using their hand, arm, leg, head, elbow, knee, bottom or any combination of body parts.

GARDEN GURU AND GIGGLES Fun Facts: Who likes avocados? Smashed avo on toast maybe? Do you know how avocados grow?
Avocados grow on evergreen trees. Evergreen means the
tree doesn't shed its leaves in the autumn. Avocado trees
need to grow in an area that has excellent drainage,
porous soil and is sheltered from strong winds and frosts.
They prefer a climate that is tropical - cool winters and hot
humid summers. Learn more here:

Giggles & the Garden
Q: How do you fix a broken tomato?
A: Tomato paste!
Planet Ark - Schools Recycle Right Challenge Monday 7 October - Friday 15 November 2019 Planet Ark provides free recycling activity guides, lesson plans and Australian school
event ideas designed to engage students and teachers to learn by doing and having fun!
Check out the Getting Started Guide at schoolsrecycle.planetark.org/ to help you plan
and promote your Schools Recycle Right Challenge activities.
Registered activity coordinators will have access to other resources throughout the year.
It’s a great time of year for the More Green, Less Screen challenge. This stage 2 & 3 resource is mapped to the PDHPE curriculum & requires limited planning with all resources and student prizes provided. It’s a 2-3 week challenge that provides a great opportunity for students
to turn off their screens and get active outdoors. It is also an important
message to leave with your year 6 students before they embark on
the increased digital influences at High School. Contact your Health
Promotion Officer if your school is interested in being involved.

How to make a vertical garden from plastic bottles After a fun project at school or home? Vertical gardens made from plastic bottles
are a great way to save space and help the environment through recycling. All you
need is clear plastic bottles, soil, rope and seeds. Follow these simple steps to
make your own vertical garden.
Step 1: Cut a large horizontal opening in 2L plastic bottles
Step 2: To hang the bottles cut 4 small holes, 2 on each side of the bottle
Step 3: Using rope or wire thread it through the holes. Tie a knot at the end to secure
Step 4: Cut small holes in the bottom of the bottles to allow for drainage
Step 5: Fill the bottles with soil, start planting and hang your masterpiece!

Healthy Kids Expo 2019 The bi annual Healthy Kids School Canteen Expo was recently held in Rosehill. Over 350 canteen staff from around NSW attended to see and taste all the latest products available for school canteens that comply with the new canteen strategy requirements. There was also cooking demonstrations by canteen managers, Tim Cullen (a MasterChef contestant), and Kathy who hosts the Kathy’s Kitchen facebook page to inspire other school canteens. The NSLHD team attended the Expo and connected with Northern Sydney schools there. It was a fun and rewarding day with many positive ideas on offer to support school canteens.
