Message from Mrs Barr Dear Parents

A busy half term is now drawing to a close. I have been impressed with the year 7 boys commitment to sleeping on the floor this last week in aid of our school charity, Stand By Me. If you would like to sponsor them, in order to support their courageous efforts, please follow this link https://www.standby.me/appeals/chepstow-students-february-on-the-floor

Several staff have also been taking part in this initiative and I am amazed at how fresh faced they are still looking, I am sure that half term will be a welcome break, with the promise of returning to a comfortable bed to sleep in.

With the coronavirus very much at the forefront of the news at the moment, can I please assure you that the school is very much continuing to monitor and follow the World Heath advice, as outlined via a link in the letter and flyer that was emailed to you earlier this week. The children and staff are very focused on good hygiene habits and hand sanitizer is available throughout the school. This has always been our best practice and will continue to be..

Best wishes

NEWS FROM MUSIC DEPARTMENT We’ve had a lot of performances this week at Chepstow House School. First up was a grade 1 recital by a boy in year 1. Next Grey Hawks followed with their vocal and instrumental performance of the song ‘Tune Up and Play!’ during the celebration assembly. This was replicated by Harrier Hawks with their rendition of the same

song on the Wednesday and then the Golden Eagles surprised everyone with their flash mob dance and musical sequence to AJ Tracy’s ‘Ladbroke Grove’ in the middle of lunch service. Photos can be found below and additional media on the assembly performance page of FROG.

NEWS FROM ART DEPARTMENT As always, it’s been a busy half term in the art room. Reception started the term reading the Colour Monster by Anna Llenas, learning all about colour and emotions. They finished by learning about positive and negative shapes in Art. Year 1 have been inspired by Henri Rousseau and created their own collaged jungles

where they also created textures by colour mixing in oil pastel on their tiger heads. Year 2 have been learning more about shapes- positive, negative, organic and geometric. Year 3 are in the middle of their fair trade unit, looking at Adinkra symbols found on the Divine Chocolate Company labels, and have created their own symbols, tie-dying and printing their own reusable shopping bag. Year 4 have been developing their sculpting skills creating a wire dragon. Year 5 have been inspired by William Morris and felt making, with Year 6 looking at the work of Jim Dine and his tool studies to create their own etching. Lastly Year 7 have been

looking at the human figure and how it moves, creating sculptures out of wire and mod roc. Check out the Art Frog page to see more artwork.

NEWS FROM SPORTS DEPARTMENT Year 6 and 7 rugby vs Wetherby @ Park Club – 10th February 2020

The Year 6 and 7 boys travelled to Park Club to take on 2x Wetherby teams. In the ‘A’ team fixture, Chepstow started brightly and were soon 15-0 up within the first part of the game. Olly making some invaluable tackles

and Alex N excelling at the breakdowns. Wetherby came back into the game in the second half, bagging 4 tries. Chepstow produced a sloppy second half display, lacking the fight, determination and tackling skills demonstrated in the first half. Chepstow came out 25-20 winners. The ‘B’ team dominated from start to finish in an extremely one sided fixture, winning 80-0. Everyone contributing to an outstanding win, Konstantin and Pacha (year 5s) running brilliantly with the ball to bag a number of tries. This was a professional performance from the ‘B’ team.

On Tuesday 12th February Chepstow House hosted a swimming Gala between Notting Hill Prep and Southbank at Kensington Leisure Centre. Despite missing some of the children from our swim squad Chepstow managed to come out on top in each year group with many of our children swimming against the older year groups. This is a huge win for Chepstow, a big well done to all swimmers, especially Zoe who has made huge improvements over the past 5 weeks and Anuradah for settling in so quickly to swim squad.

Final Results:

Year 4 CHS – 49 NHP – 42 SB - 46

LITTLE CHEPSTOW NEWS Love is in the air at Little Chepstow. The children have been talking about the special people in their lives and why they love them. Nursery has been a hive of activity with Valentine cards and cookies being made as well as heart collages and heart sponge printing.

The highlight of the week was our Valentine fun day when everyone came either in Valentine themed dress up, pink or red. Many Valentine themed activities took place and we all enjoyed special heart shaped biscuits for snack.

Another exciting event was our first visit to the Wild Area this year. The sun was shining and it was so wonderful to see the children playing freely and exploring this amazing resource. We are so lucky to have it.

In the words of a three year old, “Oh my goodness it’s like being in the middle of an exciting new world!” ☺

RECEPTION NEWS This half term we have truly turned into dinosaur experts! From carnivores to herbivores, tyrannosaurus rex to triceratops, we know all there is to know about dinosaurs. This week, we’ve learnt about sharing numbers into equal groups – we were especially keen to make sure each group had the same amount when sharing sweets! We also loved our Valentine’s topic this week and had some lovely conversations about people we love and what makes them so special. A big well done to the Robin class for their first ever assembly too. We hope you have a great half term and come back raring to learn all about Kings and Queens!!

YEAR 2 NEWS In English, we looked non-fiction information leaflets. First, we collected examples for homework and then in class we looked at the layout and language features used. Then, continuing our focus of Scotland and Katie Morag, we have researched the Isle of Coll, the island based on Katie’s fictional home. Finally we created

factual leaflets that present physical and human features of the island.

YEAR 3 NEWS On Monday we had an exciting visitor from Blendavenda. We talked about the benefits of cycling and healthy eating, then used pedal power to create delicious fruit smoothies!

Year 3 now have lots of knowledge about Tutankhamun. This knowledge was used to write diary entries

pretending to be Howard Carter, on the day he discovered the tomb.

We have finished off our orangutan topic by writing persuasive letters to the Secretary of State for the Environment, to ask for help with tackling the problem of deforestation. We hope to receive lots of replies!

It’s been a busy half term and we are all looking forward to a well-earned break. We hope you have a lovely holiday.

YEAR 4 NEWS This week in English, we have revised lots of grammar features such as expanded noun phrases, prepositional phrases, fronted adverbials and subordinating conjunctions. Can you spot the aforementioned features in the sentence below?

Before she walked to the station, Ms Morris put on her black, shiny Dr Martens that she had left beside the door.

In geography, we have continued our topic on Climate Change. We thought about the impact that climate change is having on people and our planet and then made a consequences wheel to show our understanding.

They finished their Irish myths during our English lessons, which we are all very proud of. Please look out for them during our next book look!

We hope that everyone has a great half-term break and look forward to everything we have planned for when we return.

YEAR 6 NEWS During Mental Health Week we started using Headspace, an online space to meditate. It gave us time to think and relax, we found it helped us to calm down and took away some of our stresses. We also created emotion booklets where we wrote down the activities we were doing and how they made us feel. In maths,

we have been problem solving with Pythagoras’ theorem and have been having very competitive games of Jeopardy testing our maths skills. Some children experienced The Smoothie Bike, where a mix of fruit was put into the blender and then the children rode the bike to generate power to make the smoothie. It was a delicious smoothie!

CHARITY NEWS February on the floor has been a real challenge. There are a number of tired and achy people at Chepstow who are looking forward to climbing into a comfy bed this evening! Thank you so much to everyone who has donated this week. We really appreciate your support. At the time of writing, we have raised enough money to buy 25 beds with mattresses, pillows, sheets and blankets. These will make a huge difference to families in Ethiopia who, for the first time, will be able to sleep somewhere warm and comfortable.

You can read more about ‘February on the floor’ by visiting https://www.standby.me/go/february-on-the-floor.
