NEWS FROM SPORTS DEPARTMENT Year 6 rugby vs Notting Hill Prep – 28th January

The year 6 boys travelled to Linford Christie to take on a depleted Notting Hill Prep team. The boys played in one game, with the boys being rolled on and off so everyone had equal game time. The year 6s dominated the game throughout, Jago showed his class with some excellent well timed tackles and some domineering runs through the NHP defence. Gyula tackled nicely and Josh was again very consistent at the breakdowns. A brilliant 64-5 win by Chepstow House School.

Year 4 rugby vs Notting Hill Prep – 30th January

On a cold and blustery day year 4 travelled to Linford Christie to take on NHP in three contact rugby fixtures. The ‘A’ team were again impressive in a 35-35 draw against an evenly matched NHP team. The way the team are now playing, cohesively and making rapid progress is a delight to see. Salah was again instrumental in attack and Tristan in defence, Konstantin made some rapid run through the NHP defence and pocketed one try. The ‘B’ team played their usual attacking style of rugby, dominating in attack. Sofian showed his consistency in the tackle, along with Ralph, Frederik bagged 3 tries in another entertaining game from Mr Wilkinson’s men. They came out 65-40 winners. The ‘C’ team played in another enthralling game, the score finished 50-45 to NHP but lots and lots of positives were taken from the game, especially Michael H and Kaya who dominated proceedings. This was another good experience for all the year 4 boys, they continue to impress us.

Year 5 rugby vs Falcons at Richmond Athletic Association sports field – 24th January

The year 5 boys travelled to Richmond to take on two strong Falcons teams. The ‘A’ team started brightly, Henry attacking and defending brilliantly, he made some strong tackles. Mati dominated the breakdowns/rucks and Chepstow were playing nicely. Chepstow missed the odd tackle which opened the door for Falcons to run into, they created several openings in the first half. In the second half, Oliver made some excellent runs, backed up by Tristan. The tries were shared around in a good team performance, the score ended 40-35 to falcons in a very tight encounter. The ‘B’ team played excellently in their first fixture of the season, Sachin bagging a try, along with everyone else contributing to a 65-45 winning scoreline. Otto (year 4) was sublime in attack and defence, showing great promise. Mr Wilkinson was impressed with the ability to work as a team, along with the awareness to be quick to effect the breakdown.

Year 6 Hockey vs NHP

On Monday 28th January the Year 6 girls played against NHP at Linford Christie, despite the cold weather the team were all in high spirits with plenty of energy. The team were focussing on accurate passing towards goal and putting pressure on the opposition. The girls were fast paced working up and down the pitch using strong, long passes to gain ground on NHP. The opposition had a few shots at goal in the first two thirds of the game which were greatly defended by Sophia as sweeper and Grace as goalkeeper. The team worked well together and didn’t give up or lower the energy levels for the duration of the game, the team were just defeated by the opposition in the final third of the game, but should still be

incredibly proud of their efforts and team work. The team are now working on new tactics in morning training sessions, focussing on using the right hand side of the pitch on the far wing in order to attack the opposition on their weak side giving more opportunity to shoot for goal.

On pitch two the year 6 girls were also helped out by a selection of Year 5 girls for the afternoon. The team were a mixture of year 5 and 6 girls who worked well together as a collective despite the difference in year groups. The team were focussing on dribbling with the ball through spaces in order to gain ground before passing to avoid a tackle. With plenty of opportunities to shoot for goal the team managed to score a whopping 8 goals throughout the game! The team have been discussing the power needed when shooting from inside the D which proved effective by the final result. The player of the match on this pitch, chosen by NHP and very well deserved went to Farrah for her amazing contribution to the game.

Year 4 Hockey vs NHP

On Tuesday 29th January the Year 4 girls played field hockey against NHP at Linford Christie. The girls were split over two pitches and played both teams in three 10 minute thirds. On pitch one the team got off to a good start taking the first centre pass. The girls focussed on staying in their positions on the pitch.

On pitch two the team were primarily focussing on their use of dribbling after receiving the ball, in order to maintain possession of the ball and gain ground on the opposition. The girls all gave 100% effort to this tactic and all said after the game they felt incredibly proud of their dribbling skills and control. Another focus for this team was the put more pressure on the opposition by approaching them for a tackle before they get a chance to get near the D. Putting pressure on the opposition gives us more opportunity to intercept their passes and clear the ball from our goal area. Player of the match on pitch 2 was Freya for her incredible stamina within her centre midfield position. Freya managed to cover the entire pitch chasing the opposition to win back the ball and accurately passing it back to the Chepstow players. Freya also used her initiative to hang around just outside the D when our team was shooting to retrieve any loose balls that were heading away from the D, returning them to our strikers. Emma showed ample amounts of controlled dribbling and some very close misses shooting at goal which she was extremely proud of. The team managed to score a goal in the final third of the match and finished the game feeling very positive and proud of themselves and each other.

NEWS FROM SCIENCE DEPARTMENT Year 6 investigated the murder of the Nobel Prize winning Professor Hartley, who was found dead on the science laboratory floor. The children were asked by the police to investigate the suspects and discover the identity of the industrial spy who murdered Professor Hartley, so that they could steal her latest discovery. To ensure that their knowledge and skills were up to scratch the children quizzed themselves about their knowledge of the respiratory and circulatory systems.

LITTLE CHEPSTOW NEWSWho thought that ‘ice skating’ would become part of the Early Years Foundation curriculum? Well Jack Frost has obliged and frosty mornings have added a sparkly layer on our playground which have had the children clamouring to be outside early, in order to ‘skate’ down the slope.

So, another busy and exciting week comes to a close at Little Chepstow. The Dormice have been enjoying learning about Jungle Animals. This has included listening to and identifying animal noises, making animal footprints and monkey and tiger masks. They have also been learning about volumes by pouring coloured rice into containers and guessing how many spoonful’s each will hold.

The Field Mice are becoming ‘model citizens’ as their topic is British Values. This includes taking turns through games, considering others and being inclusive. We have carried out role play scenarios, talked about similarities and differences and also what we are good at. Whilst all these skills are an ongoing theme throughout nursery, having a focus week just supports this learning further.

As well as this, we have had a very busy ‘Vets Role Play Area’ and our skilled medics have carried out complex operations

on all variety of creatures. Another exciting development has been our amaryllis, which has now got five flowers. We have measured it daily, watered it and even sung to it. No wonder it is now in full bloom.

RECEPTION NEWS This week reception have been writing their own subtraction sums. The children used ten frames and cubes to work out the answer. In literacy the children have been writing facts about dinosaurs. The teachers are so impressed with all the children’s writing. Some of it is neater than ours! Keep up the hard work Reception! We also learnt all about volcanoes and did a very exciting experiment. We made a volcano erupt. Why not try

it at home. All you need is some kind of model volcano and then a little vinegar and some baking soda. In cookery we made yummy pancakes. What a treat ☺ .

YEAR 1 NEWS The y1 production is well underway! The children had their first full run through as a year group and we have been so impressed with the children’s acting, speech and dancing! A huge thank you to Miss Norman for adding special Chinese New Year themed steps this week. The children will also be making various props for the play in their art lessons from now until the performance, which we are very excited to show you!Continuing our Goldilocks work, the classes have been writing out the full story, focusing on a variety of adjectives, connectives and openers. The children also enjoyed correcting a teachers mistakes! We gave them example paragraphs full of spelling mistakes, missing capital letters and full stops – they certainly think we should be listening in lessons now too!Partitioning has continued in maths with our addition and subtraction bubbles. But the key activity of the week for the children has been their frog jump number lines. We all enjoyed jumping up and down our lines outside to show our number bonds and extended number equations. We also practised grouping as an introduction to multiplication.

YEAR 2 NEWS Year 2 had an amazing time celebrating all things Scottish. After arriving at school in our finest tartan, we spent a day learning all about Burns Night and how this special day is celebrated. From making shortbread, to learning a Scottish dance to trying haggis, we felt just like Katie Morag! Weaving our own tartan was so much fun and we had to think carefully about replicating our pattern exactly. In other news, we are loving ‘Harry Potter’ and really wanted to receive a letter to attend Hogwarts! However, our letters haven’t arrived so we have started planning formal letters of complaint…we’re sure that Professor Dumbledore will write back soon!

YEAR 3 NEWS This week, we have been looking at maps of the UK and learning about the difference between the UK, Great Britain and the British Isles. In topic, we got creative and discovered our inner ‘Stone Age Boy’ whilst carving tools and weapons out of bars of soap. We’ve also enjoyed writing story endings about a little boy who wants to drink a growing potion but drinks the wrong one, with disastrous results! You can read all about it in the Waterstones window display in a few weeks’ time.

YEAR 4 NEWS This week in Year 4 we have continued to write our diaries as either Romulus or Remus. We have included some fantastic vocabulary to describe thoughts and feelings. We kicked off the week in PSHE by giving each other a great big hug and talking about how to be a good friend. In Geography, we have looked at the causes of climate change and the impact this is having on animals, including humans

YEAR 5 NEWS After delving into the story involving the Irish legend, Finn McCool, we’ve been busy creating our own Irish myths. We began with week look at character development, imagining some fantastic mythical beasts like Nico’s half pig half yeti called ‘Piti’. What makes your Irish legend special? Does he have the ability to teleport? Can she shapeshift? Does he sleep with his eyes open? Is she approachable or devilish? After creating our main characters we thought about setting, storyline and using sophisticated language. We thought of simple sentences such as “I looked around the dark cave” and added in connectives, coordinate and subordinate clauses and elegant language. What word can we replace dark with? Draughty, dank, damp.

Symmetry, rotation, reflection and transformation, as well as algebra, have been on the menu for maths this week. Initially algebra scared us, but it was so satisfying being able to work out what the value for ‘n’ in in 2n+10=16!

We took half an hour out of our busy days to visit Nursery on Wednesday. The Little Chepstow Nursery VETS opened for business on Wednesday morning and we were told to bring down our sick pets. The wonderful 2 and 3 year old veterinary physicians did an excellent job brining our pets (otherwise known as cuddly toys) back to full health! They would give the Yorkshire Vet a run for his money!

YEAR 6 NEWS Maths has focused on Pythagoras’ Theorem this week with activities including making our own shapes using the theory as well as solving and making our own word problems. It’s been a fun and triangle-filled week of Maths! In English, we have focused on the 1000 Year Old Boy by writing persuasive discussion texts on whether we would like to live forever or not. The arguments ranged from experiencing an amazing wealth of history to having to keep making friends over and over again… On balance we decided we don’t want to live forever, just a normal life will do! We also considered what the different character’s perspectives are of shady Uncle Jasper in the book and theorised a lot on what his real persona is. In Geography we have been carrying on with the country files which are beginning to get to Lonely Planet levels of information! Everything from famous landmarks, to food, people and the cities of note within the country; we can’t wait to see them when they are all finished. In Current Affairs, we took on one of the global inequality themes that we learned about last week to create our own campaign awareness posters. We had some really fantastic and thought provoking slogans with a lot of messages based around gender equality. Chloe had a lovely message for her poster,

‘Gender doesn’t matter, it’s dreams that do.’ Next week we have another round of fixtures for the boys (who secured a stunning 15-1 victory on Monday!) and a packed lesson on RS for the girls who have their fixture the week after. Another busy but fun-packed week in year 6!!

YEAR 7 NEWS This week has been a little different with Miss Crix off on maternity leave and Miss Thamia stepping into the role of form teacher. We have also had our first lessons with Mr Thamia where we have been studying Medieval churches and religion, and creating poems for the Waterstones display based on our own mythical creatures. In maths this week we have been learning all about linear function, how to draw straight line graphs and investigating the equation y = mx + c. This week Gyula and Jahan were given the task of choosing our class reader and we look forward to reading Artemis Fowl together!
