Term 3, Week 10 Wednesday 27 September 2017 Kia Ora Parents and Caregivers As it’s nearly the end of the term I wanted to encourage you to build some reading time into your children’s days over the two weeks holiday. You’ll being doing a lot to make sure that they don’t lose any ground with their reading. Even a couple of weeks without any reading practice can have an impact on a child’s progress. The good news is that just 10 or 15 minutes a day reading (even three lots of 5 minutes) makes all the difference. It’s disappointing for everyone if a child’s reading progress drops back over the holidays. This is especially true for younger or struggling readers. See if you can build the daily habit into these short school holidays, and then you’ll be set to do the same for the long summer holidays when it can really have an impact some children lose as much as 6 months progress over the summer if they don’t keep doing some reading! Our Learning Celebration last Friday was a wonderful celebration of the some of the learning opportunities our tamariki have been involved in this term. Highlights of the morning included hearing students from Travis Studio sharing their writing and a song with us; the success of our basketball teams; the success of our PTA Walkathon; receiving Bronze Award from 40 Hour Famine; watching our dance crew perform; updates on REAL Challenges and seeing children achieving in their maths. Today our Enviro team students are leading the Silver Reflection Day with Enviro School representatives. Everyone in our school have been working really hard on their environmentally sustainable projects both at school and in our community. This is the day where all of those projects are shared and we evaluate whether we have achieved the criteria for Silver. Keep an eye out and we will let you know how we go! Enjoy a relaxing holiday; see you back next term refreshed and ready to learn. Kia Ora Parents and Caregivers

As it’s nearly the end of the term I wanted to encourage you to build some reading time into your children’s days over the two weeks holiday.

See if you can build the daily habit into these short school holidays, and then you’ll be set to do the same for the long summer holidays when it can really have an impact – some children lose as much as 6 months progress over the summer if they don’t keep doing some reading!

ENVIRO NEWS

Beeswax Lunch wraps For sale outside the CHOICE Room on Friday morning before school. These lunch wraps are very useful for wrapping sandwiches and food products like a block of cheese or half an avocado. They are really great to have instead of glad wrap. The best thing is that they are reusable so you can use them over and over again! They will be selling for $9 each, 2 for $16 and 3 for $24.

Soft Plastics Recycling The Love NZ Soft Plastics Programme: keep plastic bags and packaging out of landfill.

The enviro team want to support this programme. Bring your supermarket bags, bread bags, frozen food bags, toilet paper packaging, confectionery and biscuit wrap, chip bags, pasta and rice bags, courier envelopes, shopping bags, - basically anything made of plastic which can be scrunched into a ball, to school. Just make sure they are empty, dry and leave them in the ‘Soft Plastics’ bin by Woody’s shed. We will take these to our local supermarket to be recycled. Waitākiri Worm tea is great for your garden. An excellent way to grow healthy, hardy organic plants, promote natural soil balance, and reduce garden pests, is to use Waitākiri Worm tea on your plants and soil. It is for sale again at $2 a bottle.
