I regularly speak to mums and dads who are really positive about the way this school has managed the stresses around the pandemic and the clear communications from the school to home. Year 11 Students Show Great Work Ethic Throughout Difficult Times

The Year 11s survived the uncertainties of Semester 1, and we couldn’t be prouder. The year began smoothly with the students stepping up to their new position as school leaders with a level of maturity that had never been seen before. They faced the first round of OLNA testing head on, attending weekly tutoring sessions to ensure they were as prepared as possible. The progress made was indicative of the hard work of both the students themselves and their dedicated teachers. Attending Tafe was a new venture which they all took in their stride; whether it be engineering, automotive, building or childcare they impressed their lecturers with their conduct and keen attitude. Along came COVID 19 which saw a move to online learning, something way out of the realm of normal for students, teachers, parents and guardians. Despite the challenges, lessons were still learned, work was still submitted, and progress was still made.

In week 1, Term 2 students began to re-emerge on site and the transition back into regular school life began. I want to commend the hard work of the Year 11’s in getting straight back into it, ensuring assessments were caught up on and submitted, as well as heading back to Tafe ready to learn, despite all the challenges faced. The resilience displayed throughout the Semester has been impressive. We ended the interesting Semester with a pizza lunch, volleyball and some minute-to-win-it games, a well-deserved, relaxing afternoon.

Thank you to everyone involved in ensuring the Year 11’s success in Semester 1, they couldn’t have done it without you. Semester 2 is off to an optimistic start with visits from Regional Specialists and the School Based Training group already off to Tafe, we are looking forward to celebrating all the positives 2020 is yet to reveal.

Year 12 Photography Students Show off their Talents

The Year 12 photography class have been experimenting with a range of abstract photography techniques for some very creative work. The students conceived a mini-series of abstract works that represent their inner selves. The final production was so beautiful that the class displayed their photographs in the library and had an opening celebration during lunch! Caitlin Dominey │Arts Teacher

Last term the Senior School Engagement class explored their fitness levels and participated in a beep test activity with ther fellow Engagement classes, TOP and LSEP. It turned out to be a fun lesson, with the students demonstrating some impressive skills. Owen Wardle reached the highest score, Level 11. Due to the success of the excerise, SSEP have decided to attempt it again this term and record improvements.

Y.I.C. Visits

Milli Maya Welcomes in Term 3 with Great Appetite

Welcome back to school!A warm Welcome to Term 3, 2020 from Milli Maya students and staff. During this term, we will be unveiling our new flags, provided by Kevin Michel. Kevin is the local Labor Member for the Legislative Assembly, representing the Pilbara Electorate. The flag poles have been painstakingly refurbished by local industry employees. A big thankyou must be extended to Kevin from Goodline, Mrs Ballantyne and Mrs Wuruki from HSHS for their diligence in following this through.Adding to this, our students are studying hard and learning about the school values. In using RESPECT, RESPONSIBILITY, COURTESY and CARE at school and in the community, Milli Maya have seen a noticeable change in the positive interactions that are occurring within the school and with visitors that come to visit. This is very exciting and will carry our students through life in a positive framework. We also welcome Y.I.C. (Youth Involvement Council) into Milli Maya twice a week for one hour each session. Y.I.C. have helped the students with mindfulness activities, photography, jewelry making, painting, basketball skills and cooking. Our classes have been a vibrant mix of positivity through learning life skills such as cooking. The students organise the meal they wish to prepare on Monday’s and the ingredients are purchased, ready for a fabulous cook up on Tuesday. Such things as pizzas, tacos and Asian cuisine have filled us all up to the brim. Finally, we have successfully enrolled two students in a Certificate 1 Sport Leadership course conducted by Vocational Training Services (V.T.S.). This is run from 9am-2pm on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. The girls will learn Leadership skills with a sports focus. Not only will this give both of them an industry qualification but it will also provide them with confidence and values that can be carried through life.

Please feast

on some

stay happy!

Year 12s Charge Through Semester 1 with Tremendous Success

Despite a challenging start to 2020, the Year 12s charged their way through their final Semester 1 at HSHS. In March and April, Sarah Maea, our Youth Worker, ran sessions with each Pastoral Care class designed to help equip our students develop a growth mindset and become more aware of how they recognise and manage stressful situations. Hopefully these will be invaluable skills they will take to the workplace and beyond.

The hard work of SIDE students was acknowledged through Cupcake Day and students were lucky to sample the delights provided by Mrs Williams, the SIDE supervisor. We know that the delay of the school ball and the cancellation of Country Week was a very disappointing loss for our students, but we still wanted to recognise everyone’s hard work and commitment over an incredible two terms. Our end of term picnic and volleyball games were a huge success, with students enjoying a catered lunch and the chance to unwind with their friends. The Year 12 group have countlessly presented themselves as role models promoting a positive school environment at recess and lunch. Their spirit will be missed at the end of the year.

Already in term 3, we have had regional specialists working with the ATAR group. The students in the Certificate II Sport and Recreation course successfully completed their First Aid and many other students are steadfastly completing their Certificate courses. We look forward to celebrating the successes still to come this year.

Science & Technology Captivates Engagement Students

Lower, middle, and senior school engagement

classes have continued their investigations into Science and Technology

this semester with a wide range of topics.

Students have investigated creating electrical circuits,

measuring the pH of different liquids using

home-made indicator, and the best ways to increase friction for starting a fire.

The Welcome Centre have also had a great time getting involved

and practicing using all of their senses to learn about the world around them, including making

their own dinosaur fossils and testing different

precipitation reactions for the most spectacular

colour changes!

SAP is Back with Exciting Changes for Semester 2

The Specialist Arts Program is back with some exciting new changes and we would especially like to welcome Anita Ozolins to the team as the Visual Art SAP teacher! This semester SAP is all about creating a fun environment where the students can develop their Arts skills with exciting events coming up such as FunFest, Awesome Arts, the FORM Photography Incursion and the end of year SAP Showcase. The SAP teachers are excited to welcome every student back and look forward to many amazing experiences. This term the SAP Photography and Media students have been learning some advanced manual camera settings. Students worked on controlling aperture and shutter-speed to create light trails and ghost like figures. Their eagerness to experiment through hands on and practical activities has meant they have already been able to fit so much learning into the first few weeks of term. Next up is portrait photography with a personally researched theme and model. We look forward to their exhibition at the much anticipated SAP showcase in Term 4.

Ministerial Boots on the Ground for Workplace Learning

The Hedland Senior High School Workplace Learning Program would like to thank the

Honourable Stephen Dawson MLC for his generous donation of work boots.

It is quite common that our students are not able to provide their own work boots. By

removing this financial burden, we can place more students into workplaces. This results in

more opportunities for many of our young aspiring workers to enter the world of work.

The Workplace Learning Program (WPL) at Hedland SHS is an essential link between

students and local employers. Here at Hedland SHS we are always looking to grow our

network of local employers and industries. If you would like to support the program, then

please contact us at the school.

Farewell to a School Favourite

After 3 and a half years, a much-loved member of our

staff, gardener Davis Kokkattil-Ouseph, has left our

school community to move to Perth and be with his

family.

Davis has weaved his green thumb magic throughout

the school over the years and has made the grounds look

new and beautiful.

We are really going to miss his smiling face and his

wonderful handy work, and we wish him the very best

for the future. Davis’s new school is certainly very lucky

to have him.

V Swans Kicking & Shooting Goals News

Well didn’t Term 2 finish off flying! The last 3 weeks of term was jam packed with the V Swans SEPEP windups and awards sessions, leadership luncheon and 100 Club! We would like to say a big thankyou to all our 100 Club invitees for attending the awards session and being so well behaved. 100 Club is for the students who meet the V Swans program expectations; experience continual transformation; respect the program, teachers and students within the program and have a strong school attendance.

What a start to Term 3! Shooting Goals students kicked off with an introduction to the KNEE program which incorporates correct movement patterns and landing approaches to prepare the knees and lower body joints for netball drills and match play! This term we will be teaching the students Fast 5 netball – Which is a slightly altered (5 people on court) netball game that adds a bit more excitement.

Our after-school activities started in Week 2 and what a great turn out we had. Our first session of Swan Strength was a success – the students were taken through an agility and speed circuit! After 2 stations it was safe to say the students were starting to worry about what they were in store for moving forward. We are focusing on a different area of strength and conditioning each week and then revisiting these areas later in the term to observe their improvement.

V Swans netball tournament had a great response with 3 teams of 9 students currently on the fixture. Our first round saw the dominant ‘Chicken Fingers’ show some early skill against ‘The Furious Fairies’ and ‘Blue Tongues’. The Chicken Fingers, made up of Year 9 and 10 students, were asked to pull from their skill bank when Shooting Goals teacher Renae took their team down to 5 V 7 to make the competition even. Chicken Fingers still came away with the dominant win. There were some stand out skills shown early from Poppy Zadow, Zaliya Edgar, Lidia Teitzel and Lila Zadow – well done girls! Shout out to Tayla Fahey for umpiring throughout the session for us and to Rob for taking some fabulous shots!

V Swans Kicking & Shooting Goals News Cont...

Lastly, our after-school activities included commencement of training for the Development squad members. This squad was chosen by the Port Hedland Netball Association and, throughout 2020, were to be were to be developed for their next level of netball and pushed to a higher skill level. Unfortunately, with COVID-19 this was unable to happen. Our plan is that the girls do not lose their current level of netball and we can develop them as much as possible in 2020 to keep netball in Hedland moving forward. We had 14 girls attend on Thursday and we started from the basics with ball skill, leads and landing. Throughout the term we will work on all aspects of their play and team building.

On a side note – We have the annual Year 10 incentive trip in Term 4! We will be visiting schools from Perth and the South West for netball games, team building and exposure to what different netball and sporting programs look like in different regions. We will sneak a cheeky trip to Simmo’s ice-creamery also to experience ALL the flavours they have on offer! If you think you can support these girls in any way for their tour, please let us know!

Coming Up for V Swans – Newman High’s Port Hedland tour, Broome Cup and much more inbetween!
