Public Speaking Competitions: Last week, our public speakers competed in the Eastlakes Zone Public Speaking Competitions at various locations. Our public speakers performed extremely well in very competitive fields across our zone. Congratulations Darwin Merindah, Patrick, Reece , David, Holly, Amelia and John who represented us in this competition.
The Hunter Multicultural Public Speaking Regional final will take place next Monday 25 August(W7) at Cardiff South PS. We will be represented by John M from Year 6. All the very best John from the Eleebana PS learning community.
Future School Planning: The third and last parent survey will come home as a hard copy next Monday 25 August. This survey will focus on community participation in school programs, activities and events. The survey will provide an awareness of what is available and current participation. We will be asking for factors that limit community participation in school programs, activities and events. We will be asking for suggestions that could overcome these limitations and strategies for implementation over the life of the next school improvement plan. This survey will close next Friday 29 August 2014.
Eastlake Zone Athletics Carnival: Congratulations to all students who represented Eleebana Public School at the Eastlakes Zone Athletics carnival last week. Kaitlyn Klein was successful in making it through to Hunter Region Athletics carnival. We wish her all the very best.
Band News: The Band program going forward will include:

Farewell Mrs Gibbs: Mrs Margaret Gibbs will be finishing her teaching career this Friday 22 August. Mrs Gibbs will take long service leave for the remainder of 2014 and officially retire from the service in January 2015. We thank Mrs Gibbs for her time at Eleebana PS and for her service to the Department of Education and Communities over many years. Mr Rhys Thomas will teach 2G for the remainder of 2014. We all wish Mrs Gibbs a long and happy retirement.
Nationals News: Last week Lachlan J returned from the National Hockey Championships in Hobart. Lachlan represented the NSW team at these championships. Along the way NSW played games against Victoria (lost 1-0), ACT (won 8-1), SA (won 5-0), Tasmania (won 11-0), WA (drew 1-1), and Qld (drew 1-1). These results place NSW third(bronze), behind WA(silver) and Victoria(gold).
Congratulations Lachlan, we are all very proud of your effort and the results from your team.
The NSW girls hockey team won the gold at the National Hockey Championships.Times
2015 Student Enrolments: We are now being asked to provide anticipated enrolment numbers for 2015. We are particularly interested in securing our 2015 Kindergarten enrolments as the Kinder orientation meetings are organised for later in Term 3. All students who are 4 ½ to 6 years of age are entitled to start school in 2015 in our Kindergarten classes. If you have students who are in this age group, or know of families of students in this age group, or any neighbours who currently attend other schools and would like to attend Eleebana PS in Kinder to Year 6 in 2015, could you (and tell them to) please contact the school office for an application form for enrolment. Thank you everyone.
Spring Fair: The major P&C fundraiser, our Spring Fair is fast approaching. We are now officially in the planning stage for this event and the P&C are desperate for support from parent and community members to assist with this event. Volunteers are needed to assist committee members now. If you can assist in any way, please contact our P&C fundraising coordinator Debbie Fenwick on 0421 355 401.
Parking: Please avoid parking in the driveways of local residents as this can cause great inconvenience for them. It is timely to remind community members to avoid parking in no stopping or no parking zones around the school as there are significant fines for doing so.
2014 School Watch Team: Mr Max Broadbent is the 2014 School Watch coordinator. Max has a number of parents on this team, but would welcome anyone else who would like to join. For information about School Watch, Max can be contacted on 4942 8001.

Parent helpers needed with new K-2 books
Some new books have recently been purchased for teachers in K-2 to utilise in their Guided Reading lessons. Miss Meehan and Mrs Hughes-Dann would appreciate some assistance with stamping and sorting them. If you are able to give an hour or two of your time this week (preferably Tuesday or Wednesday) could you please make yourself known to either Miss Meehan or Mrs Hughes-Dann.
Library News
1 week to go until this year’s Premier’s Reading Challenge is over. Congratulations to Lily KM, Ali and Will KH, Thomas 1D, Bailey 1SS, Darcy and Mason 1/2HD, Jahnavi 2P, Amber , Isabella , Mohammad and Seon 3T, Jack 4JG, Lachlan 4M, Ruby 5HM and Abbey 6G who now join 240 other students who have completed the Challenge. All completed reading logs need to be returned by 22nd August to allow validation to be completed before the cut off date. To enter the books on to their online reading log, go to www.schools.nsw.edu.au/premiersreadingchallenge
Enter the student’s user name and password that they use at school and go to Student Reading Record. Enter the ID number of the book in the box and the details will be automatically entered to allow a cross-check that it was the right book. When the correct number of books has been reached, it will not allow any more books to be entered. Either, send the original reading log, or a print out from the computer record to Mrs Forbes. Students will only be able to enter their logs online until Friday, 22nd August, after that date the site will be closed off to students and only authorised teachers can enter records but after 31st August no further entries can be made.
Those who read – succeed, Robyn Forbes
Basketball News
On Thursday the 8th August Eleebana Public participated in both the Senior Girls and Senior Boys Hunter Region Basketball Knockout tournament. Both teams played four games each in the round robin format and after some wonderful displays of ability and skill both teams finished this part of the tournament undefeated. Both teams finished second in their pool on for and against. The senior boys played a very strong Heaton team and were unlucky to go down by around 8 points in their semifinal. The girls were even more unlucky, having a draw in their semi-final and losing on count back. Both teams showed a tremendous amount of team unity and wonderful sportsmanship. Thank you to Mr Kibble who gave up a week of his own mornings to help train both teams. Also a big thank you to our parent supporters who cheered on both teams on all day. Thanks, Mr Burrows
OOSH News
Last week at OOSH we made loom band jewellery, did an awesome scavenger hunt and painted plaster figurines. This week is National science week and so we will be doing a lot of science experiments and activities, such as making our own snow, making a clock that runs on water and growing crystals.
Two of our staff members Kendall and Ashleigh are away from OOSH until the end of Term 3, as they are completing their final internships for their Early childhood/Primary teaching degrees. We have a new staff member working with us Tannon Muller. Tannon is completing his fourth year of his Primary Teaching degree, and is already very popular with the children.
Our next committee meeting will be held Tuesday 26thth August at 6:30pm in the OOSH room. All interested parents and community members are invited to attend. Our AGM date is also set for the 28th October at 6:30pm in the OOSH room.
Happy Birthday to the following August children; Aedan C, Amelia K, Chloe M, Lara L and Logan P, We hope you have very special birthdays, from all your friends at OOSH.
For OOSH enquiries or information please phone Carolyn or Kate on 49428186 or visit us between 7-9am or 2.30-3.00pm (please avoid after 3pm as this is our busiest time of day).
Thank you, Carolyn and Kate

Handball (whilst stock lasts)
Scented Pencils (whilst stock lasts)
