College Principal’s Report

Congratulations and a huge thank you to the Director of the show, Chris Magilton. Thank you Chris, for your tireless efforts over the last few months. Chris devoted many hours to The Wedding Singer and we appreciate his efforts in organising such a big production. Thank you also to Andre Vikas, Musical Director, and our wonderful team of Instrumental Music Teachers, who all combined to provide an excellent soundtrack for the show. Thank you to Di Hayes for once again taking on the role of Stage Manager. One last thank you: to all the staff, students, past students and friends of VUSC who gave up their time to assist with costumes, sets and front of house duties. The Wedding Singer was a hit and we can’t wait to see what is in store for 2015! Staff: Chris Magilton – Director Andre Vikas – Musical Director Dianne Hayes – Stage Manager Neil Gracey – Band and Vocal Coaching Instrumental teaching staff performing in the band: Stacey Long, Adam Grech, Dan Nillson, Sam Oliveri and Ian Langford. Rob Bertagnolio, Bev Baka, Peter Mossemenear, Barbara Goad, Sue Atzarakis, Vicky Zhang, Anne Marie Narracott, Tracey Grant, Giselle Grant – Front of house Cast: Year 12 - Monica Lamb, Jasmine Pinter, Kim Lai Year 11 - Cailey Young Year 10 - Kristina Santos, Cassidy Clayton, Kyle Clayton, Gabby Bilobrk, Kevin To, Aaron Sciortino, Kaeleb Gornall-Rundell, Brandon Zerafa, Janelle Noonan-Long, Rishi Rajasekhar Year 9 – Chad Rosete, Chloe Spiteri, Saila Kaminski, Dylan Vassallo, Hayley Gould, Cassandra Martin, Daiyejhare Autufuga-Brown, Jackielynn San Miguel Year 8 - Juliet San Miguel, Paige Rapley-Flaskis Year 7 - Natasha Kalaitzis, Kayla Court, Lisa Nguyen, Cassandra Sawyers, Hannah Pell Our very talented music students are performing for the school community this Wednesday 27th August at the Annual Music Concert. It will commence at 7.00pm in C Block at the Junior Campus. We hope to see as many families there as possible to support these students and enjoy a wonderful evening. The Year 8 concert band played to lunch time shoppers at Brimbank Central last week, showcasing our students’ terrific musical abilities to the public. Well done to the students who participated. The parent information evening for students commencing Year 7 next year is coming up on Tuesday 9th September. We require all parents to attend this important evening with their child to receive information that will assist the transition to secondary school. Multicultural Day is coming up at both campuses on Wednesday 3rd September. I encourage all students to dress in their national colours and participate in the various activities that will be held on the day. This annual college event is always a fantastic display of the wonderfully diverse range of cultures that comprise our school community. Help kids leapfrog their difficulties with these ideas Whether it’s going to a new school for the first time, making new friends or even going to school camp, children often experience difficulties that they need to overcome. A parent’s attitude to their child’s difficulties will determine how successfully they meet and overcome many of the obstacles and hurdles they meet. Frame the difficulty as a challenge rather than a problem. Kids take their cues from their parents so the frame of ‘challenge’ gives kids something to rise to rather than be overwhelmed by. Coach kids to do well. Talk kids through their challenges, give them ideas to cope and manage. Consider rehearsing some skills or language that they may need. Cheers, Genevieve Simson College Principal

ANNUAL CONCERT

On Wednesday 27th August, the music department will be holding its first Annual Concert at the Junior Campus gym from 7pm. Prior to this year, audiences may remember we have held separate Junior and Senior Campus concerts, called the Junior and Senior Soirees. From this year we will now be merging the two events into one

large concert that will alternate venues each year.

This means all concert bands, rock bands, the junior campus choir, VCE groups and the Percussion Ensemble will be performing at one ‘show-stopping’ event! So please come along and witness some of the fantastic talent on display here at VUSC.

Junior Campus Gym, Wed 27th August at 7pm. Family and friends most welcome!

Year 11 VCAL Excursion to the Old Melbourne Gaol

On Friday 15th August, the Year 11 VCL students went for an excursion to the Old Melbourne Gaol. The first half of the excursion was dedicated to the re-enactment of a court room drama that actually took place in 1964. The students thoroughly enjoyed taking part in different roles ranging from judge, barristers, doctors, police officers and witnesses. It was great to see the students perform in such an exemplary manner in a different kind of platform. This was the highlight of the excursion. The tour of the Old

Melbourne Gaol was also a thrilling experience as the students obtained first-hand information through a tour and historical information session which transported all of us to the Ned Kelly era. Jessica Horvath, Haris Kadusic, David Whelan and Chris Beck need to be commended for an excellent organisation of the excursion. Ms Devi – 11V Teacher

EMA is Changing

The Education Maintenance Allowance currently provides financial assistance to low-income families to help meet costs associated with the education of their children. What is changing?

In the recent School Reform agreement signed with the Commonwealth, the Victorian Government has changed the way it helps low income families with education expenses. From 2015, the Government will distribute the funds previously used for the EMA directly to schools. DEECD will develop the arrangements to be used to distribute these funds to school. When we receive more information regarding the EMA in 2015 we will advise accordingly.

*********************************************

YEAR 8 LEAP On Monday and Tuesday of Week 6, the Year 8 students undertook a series of workshops designed to give them some idea of the possibly careers that are available to them. The workshops included: ‐The HEALTH industry (including nurses, doctors, paramedics etc); ‐The LAW industry (including lawyers, legal secretaries, police etc); and ‐The DESIGN industry (web design, industrial, graphic design etc).

Our students were engaged in these workshops delivered by members of RMIT, Deakin University, Monash University and

Victoria University. Using a combination of discussion, role playing, and hands on activities, our Year 8s were given a taste of what it would be like to enter these highly sought after and prestigious professions.

Congratulations to ALL students who represented the school with pride, and ensured that our Values of Respect, Aspire to Achieve and Strengthen the Community were displayed and put into practice. Well done to all students and staff who were involved in a fantastic program.
