Welcome

Hello and a very warm welcome to you all on our first anniversary issue.

It doesn’t seem possible that, as I am writing this, my fifth intro page, a whole year has passed by so quickly since issue one went out in September 2012.

It is because of you, the advertiser, sponsor, participant and reader that we are able to publish this issue and look forward to producing issue six in December.

On behalf of myself, Steve, Gyles, Robert and the team may I say a big thank you for supporting us since we started contacting businesses in March 2012.

Without that support I would not be writing this and already planning Issue 6!

Since the inception of the magazine we have met so many interesting characters and diverse businesses in the Tendring region and are constantly finding new contacts along the way.

Our networking events have proved to be a great success this year and, as promised, we are still moving it around the Tendring area, and this we will continue to do.

Our last event, held at The Harbour Lights Restaurant, was a great venue and was well attended, as usual. Coupled with glorious weather and a great view over the Marina, it was a fantastic way to start a Friday.

The Importance of Data Backups for SME’s

There are many reasons for backing up your data. A user could perhaps delete an important file. Your hard disk might fail.

A virus may wipe out your data. Or worst case scenario, a fire destroys the hardware on which your data is stored.

Whilst large enterprises have detailed disaster recovery procedures in place, most small to medium enterprises cannot justify the investment that is required to implement such disaster recovery plans, and must rely solely on the integrity and recoverability of their backups.

In the extreme case a loss of data could potentially stop your business trading. In reality our experience tells us that the majority of companies have one or more of the following elements present:

• Data is backed up infrequently and irregularly The danger of this is that, assuming the data backups are recoverable, the actual data is obsolete.

• Data backups entail the copying of data from one hard drive to another The danger here is that, in the case of theft, fire or hard drive failures, all of the data copies will be lost.

• Data is written to CD, DVD, Tape or flash drives This method of backing up has no inbuilt integrity or verification checks meaning there is no guarantee that the data is recoverable.

• Data is written to a removable hard drive and taken off-site daily It is easy to overwrite “good data” with corrupt data before the corruption becomes apparent. This can easily create an environment where all data backups contain corruptions that render vital data unusable.

• A well implemented backup procedure is in place whereby a series of backups are created and overwritten sequentially in a way that minimizes the possibility of data loss. Data tapes and HDD’s have a finite useful life and need to be replaced to ensure that the backup integrity remains valid.

• One or more of the above backup procedures is in placeHowever the log files generated by the backup process are not routinely checked to ensure that the backup process completed without errors. A data backup could be defined as a file or multiple files that CAN BE RESTORED! If the backup process terminates improperly or incompletely, the resultant output will not conform to this definition.

We at Naglotech suggest that the following backup procedure be put in place:

1. Implement a backup process that generates a report that indicates the success or otherwise of the process. This immediately precludes a manual process whereby an individual is tasked with writing data to flash disk or CD on an infrequent basis.

2. Ensure that an authorized person is accountable and that this person does check the log files on a frequent basis!

3. The backup procedure should include the following:

• A series of daily and weekly backups that are overwritten sequentially over a defined period. The frequency of the backups should be determined by transactional volume, meaning the more transactions that are being processed, the more frequently you need to backup.

• A monthly backup should be stored off-site for between 6 and 12 months (dependant on compliance requirements), so that at any point in time, a series of daily or weekly and monthly backups exist. This creates an environment whereby it is always possible to recover data whether it is a day old, a week old, a month old or older. The chance of multiple backups all being irrecoverable is highly unlikely.

Whilst it may seem expensive to implement a sound backup policy due to the cost of the media requirements, the initial cost is likely to be a fraction of the expense and lost revenue that may be incurred in the event of a data loss where no recoverable backups exist.

A bright future for Jamesons

The future is bright for leading Tendring accountants, Jamesons. August saw them take over the accountancy practice of S M

Walsh & Co, a long established business based in Crouch Street, Colchester. In addition to continuing to provide all existing services from their base in Clacton, they are now able to offer clients the opportunity to meet at their Colchester office.

It gives the company a springboard to further develop their services and, coupled with stronger links with the North Essex business community, keep them well placed to meet the challenges of the improving economic environment. Managing Director Alan Brown commented

‘We view ourselves as a different type of accounting firm and the main criteria when looking at acquiring a practice in Colchester was to find a business which held the same values as ourselves.’Alongside this exciting development, Jamesons also learned in August that they had been rated as one of the country’s top 10 medium accounting firms in the Accounting Web Practice Excellence Survey. One of the key drivers in this success story has been the firm’s commitment to understanding the needs of their individual

clients and offering a flexible approach to meet those needs. Alan continued

“To score so highly in every category and achieve the top 10 position is immensely pleasing. Our focus and passion is on helping business owners realise their goals and dreams. Where this focus fits with our client we can often make a significant impact on the profitability and value of the business, not to mention the quality of life for the business owner.”If you believe your business would benefit from working with an accountant who does more than simply crunch numbers then contact either Alan Brown ([email protected]) or Simon Garner ([email protected]) to arrange an informal consultation.

In Issue 3 we spotlighted Appliance Care Recycling. TBCM revisited them recently and are pleased to say that the company is still expanding and there

are some exciting developments in the pipeline.

In the March issue we told you about their start up in March 2011 with only 3 co-directors, Russell Dow, Matthew Dow and Alex Jones.

They were joined shortly afterwards by Russell’s daughter, Lucy, and now in the summer of 2013 employ 33 full time staff and hold the prestigious double *AATF status award from the Environmental Agency. (*Approved authorised treatment facility).

ACR take electrical items for recycling, and refurbishing and nonferrous metals for recycling. The company operate a dual service. One is to recycle and the other is to, where possible, refurbish appliances by their trained engineers and offer them for sale at their retail outlet on the Woodlands Business Park.

ACR offer a collection service for businesses and households alike, and also welcome personal callers who wish to drop off their surplus, redundant, electrical and nonferrous metals.

For more information about these unique services please call 01206 251400 or for more information about the range of domestic appliances for sale please call their retail outlet on 01206 617256 or visit the shop at Unit 3 Woodlands Business Park, Tenpenny Hill, Thorrington, Essex CO7 8JD.

All appliances offered for sale, such as, fridge freezers, washing machines, cookers, televisions, computers and much more, come with a six month guarantee (t&c’s apply) and, as stated above, are stringently tested by their qualified engineers (Dyson and Bosch trained professionals) prior to reselling, thus giving peace of mind and confidence in the items you may wish to purchase.

ACR now operate from Lincolnshire to The Isle of Wight.

ACR handle an astonishing 800 appliances a day!

With a fleet of 15 vehicles constantly out the road there is no let-up in the company’s day to day business.

Having obtained a further acre of land, plans are in progress to expand the services offered, and there will be some exciting developments later on this year.

We will keep you fully posted on ACR’s advancements in future issues.

Please visit their website at www.appliancecarerecycling.co.uk for a further in depth look at the many services available.

Xmas LightsAppeal 2013The Clacton Town Partnership (CTP) is a voluntary group of local shopkeepers, managers and local business people wanting to make Clacton and the surrounding area somewhere everyone can be proud of.

One of our key priorities is to ensure Clacton has a ‘festive feel’ each year by having the funds to put up and operate the Christmas lights within the town – which can be very expensive! However, if it wasn’t for the hard work and massive generosity of local business people passionate about our town, Clacton wouldn’t have these lights each year. We are trying to find a long term solution for this so we don’t have to continuously ask for donations year after year, but this will only happen with the support of the whole community.

The CTP receive no funding from Tendring District Council whatsoever.

Please help to give Clacton some festive cheer by donating as little as £5.00 or as much as you can will give the town a cheery atmosphere this Christmas. For more details on how you can donate please email [email protected] or telephone Mandy on 07958 249 095.

A history of Holland-on-Sea and The Kingscliff HotelThe Kingscliff Hotel is going through an extensive £1 million refurbishment program. We invite you to come and see for yourself!

The history…

Even though The Kingscliff Hotel is quite a prominent presence amongst many residents living and working in the Clacton to Frinton stretch of the Essex Sunshine Coast, very few people are aware of its interesting history.

In the year 1900 the area was known as Little Holland, and the landowner at the time decided to divide and sell the area in sixty individual plots of land. Included in the sales notice was a “noble corner hotel site fronting the sea”. This indicates that the intentions to build a hotel on the land were there since the very beginning. However, it took a further 32 years to finalise the plans and for the hotel to be built.

Preston’s influence…

At the auction in 1900 all sixty lots of land were purchased by Mr David Cripps Preston who then proceeded to divide the area into four building estates (amongst which The Kingscliff Estate was one) and sell the individual sites from a marquee on the cliffs. Mr Preston withdrew the hotel site (then priced at £675!) as he had the vision to build a hotel on the plot, allowing the new landowners to reside there to visit and oversee the building work on their own estates. A frustrating period followed (partly due to WWI) with very little building work and development taking place, however, roads were built to improve the infrastructure and many of these, to date, still carry names given by Preston.

Finally…

32 years, several applications and changes of ownerships later, The Kingscliff finally opened its doors.Even though the country was going through a difficult time, following the Wall Street crash and WWII (when the hotel was used for officer’s billets) Holland on Sea flourished and more and more people started using the coastal towns of Clacton, Holland on Sea and Frinton as a holiday destination.

The decline…

The more affluent period of the 1970’s saw many people travelling abroad for holidays caused a big decline in tourism for the area.

Now 40 years later the local authorities are working hard to regenerate the beautiful Essex Sunshine Coast and new investors are encouraged to help realise the transformation.

Surya Hotel Group and Legacy Hotels…

The current owners of The Legacy Kingscliff Hotel (Surya Hotel Group, Flying Trade Group PLC) saw potential in the little seaside hotel, and have invested one million pounds to restore the famous Kingscliff Hotel to its former prestigious glory. In addition to this The Surya Group have also formed a collaboration with the professional hotel management company Legacy Hotels, who are now running the hotel to the high level of Legacy standards.

Issue 5 September 2013 / December 2013 11

The new facilities…

The refurbishment program has meant the hotel now has 30 brand new luxurious and contemporary bedrooms (of a standard that will give any 4 star coastal hotel a “run for their money”), a stylish new Preston’s Restaurant and lounge bar as well as two elegant function suites which all offer stunning views over the North Sea.

The Hotel also offers free parking and WIFI usage for residents. Preston’s Restaurant is now open for lunches, dinners, afternoon tea and Sunday lunches and also can cater for any special occasion or celebration. The Preston Suite and Kings Suite offer state of the art facilities for corporate meetings and conferences. An extensive festivity program is available for the December period.

More jobs…

The new facilities has meant that many new jobs have been created for the local area with more recruitment planned in the next 12 months.

The expected increase of residents, diners, events and weddings is also expected to boost business for other small businesses in the area.

The launch…

On Friday the 4th October the Kingscliff Hotel will be holding a re-launch evening for local residents and businesses and welcomes all to step inside, have a look around, and join us in a toast to the start of a new successful era of this renowned hotel.

The hotel management invites anyone to call 01255 812343 for more information or just come and visit to see the new facilities.

SAS Assessments

Celebrate Your Victories

Your business and your employees are your greatest assets and by law need protecting. In these austere times people are, quite

understandably, looking to save money, but all too often they make savings in the wrong areas.

It is now a legal requirement that all business and public premises carry out a “suitable and sufficient” fire risk assessment.

“Fire…. it won’t happen to me.”

Hopefully not, but it only needs to happen once and, according to national statistics, 70% of business premises destroyed by fire didn’t start up again!

Although Health and Safety Law often gets a bad press, did you know that since the introduction of the Health and Safety at Work Act in 1974 fatal injuries to employees have fallen by 83% and non-fatal injuries by 77%? Frank Bates of SAS Assessments Ltd has over forty years’ experience in fire fighting, fire prevention and risk and safety management. Frank was a London fire-fighter for sixteen years after which he went into the print industry as a fire prevention officer. He later joined Network Rail where he was an Operations Risk Control Co-ordinator.

We Brits are famed for many things – stiff upper lips, Yorkshire puddings, The Beatles – but self-praise isn’t one of them.

We’re notoriously bad at owning our successes, opting instead for either false modesty or genuine self-deprecation. To say ‘Yeah, I’m really proud of myself for that’ just seems too… big-headed. It might make us sound arrogant, or worse – American. But is it really such a bad thing to do?

A survey by Gumtree.com last year showed that 92% of British jobseekers lacked confidence in talking about themselves during job interviews. And employers said that 42% of candidates undersell their skills. Modesty has become too entrenched in our minds, and whilst it’s true that no one likes a bragger, there is also no honour in hiding away your abilities. Not recognising what we’re good at can cost us our livelihoods.

This issue of TBCM marks the magazine’s one year anniversary – a great achievement! And thinking about what a success this magazine has been in its first year got me thinking about how bad we are at saying ‘well

Fire…are you sure your staff and business premises are safe?

Frank says, “Our role is to offer you a comprehensive fire risk assessment and reduce the chances of fire ruining your business.” SAS offer an audited report on your processes and procedures and assess the likelihood of a fire occurring and the possible ensuing consequences. The key role of SAS Assessments is to identify and prioritise potential problems to help keep your staff, visitors and business safe and compliant with UK fire legislation. Affordability: Prices start at just £149.00 depending on the size of your company.

SAS Assessments do not provide or maintain fire safety equipment so you can rest assured our assessment is an independent and reliable reflection of your fire safety needs. Frank acknowledges that equipment such as extinguishers and automatic fire alarms have a huge part to play in protection from the consequences of fire, but is a firm believer in prevention being better than cure.

SAS Assessments….. Suitable and Sufficient.

done’ to ourselves. I find it hard too. It’s much easier to congratulate someone else for doing well. But if you’ve just seen an increase in profits, gained a new qualification, set up a new social media account, or even if you’ve simply given your work space a new lick of paint, it’s important to acknowledge that you’re doing a great job.

The mantra of ‘we learn from our mistakes’ is often bandied about, but don’t we also learn from our successes? Those deserve your attention too. And patting yourself on the back won’t make you big-headed or arrogant; it just means you can see where you’ve done things well. Seeing what a good job you’ve done will help you continue doing what works. And feeling good about yourself and your business will help spur you on towards your next victory, no matter how big or small it may be.

Employment Law ChangesRichard Porter, Head of Employment Law

at Thompson Smith and Puxon reports on a number of significant changes to

employment tribunal litigation introduced at the end of July. The proposals aim to reduce the cost of employment disputes to both the employer and the Public Purse.

The first major change is the introduction of fees to employment tribunals for the first time since they were created in the 60’s. Cases are now divided into category A cases (straightforward cases such as claims for unpaid wages) and category B cases (complicated cases such as unfair dismissal and discrimination claims). A single claimant will have to pay a fee of £160 on presenting a claim in a category A case and £250 in a category B case. Claimants will also have to pay a further fee of £230 for category A cases and £950 for category B cases if the matter proceeds to trial. It is hoped that the changes will deter potential claimants from making purely speculative claims.

Secondly new employment tribunal rules were introduced to allow a procedure to sift out unmeritorious claims. Now, after the tribunal receives the employer’s response, the case papers will be reviewed by an employment judge who will decide whether the claim or response should be dismissed because it has no reasonable chance of success. Whilst compensation for claims of discrimination remain unlimited, the latest change is the cap on compensatory

awards in unfair dismissal cases. This has now been fixed at one year’s gross pay or £74,200 whichever is lower. However, the new cap will probably have limited effect as most compensatory awards have always fallen within these limits.

TIP: Prevention is always better than cure! Review your contracts of employment and make sure they are up to date. Make sure you review your policies and procedures. Are you making the best of them? If you are in any doubt, we can help.

Ribbon & Label Supplies Ltd …another local success story

15Issue 5 September 2013 / December 2013

Mark Lister, Managing Director of Ribbon and Label Supplies Ltd has been involved in the label industry for over 20 years and

has just expanded his operation with the opening of new offices in Colchester this July.

R&LS provide a comprehensive range of product identification and labelling products and services. These include:

• Thermal printers

• Thermal printer labels and thermal printer ribbons

• Laser printers

• Laser printer labels and laser toner cartridges

• Bar-code software, scanners and readers

• Printer service contracts

• Retail products – tickets, labels and stickers

R&LS have a diverse customer base including manufacturing, retail, government, healthcare, logistics, entertainment and hospitality. Although the company has a large stock of popular labels and ribbons that are available for next day delivery, 90% are bespoke manufactured to meet their customers needs. Whatever your requirements, Ribbon and Label Supplies can meet them. Mark says, “Because we choose to work with well-known and trusted brands, you can be sure that the printing and labelling solutions we provide will stand the test of time.”

Mark’s decision to start his own business began when he became disenchanted with how customer care was being handled at the company where he was employed. As he had all the expertise that was required to start up on his own, Mark began building up his own company that puts the needs of his client first.

The High Wycombe Journey (Literally going that extra mile..Or eighty!) His dedication to his clients was demonstrated in early August when a large order came in that had to be filled that day. Mark placed the rush order with his suppliers and began the journey to collect from the supplier and personally deliver the order to the customer. First there was an accident on the motorway and he came to a standstill. Diverting to another motorway he hit heavy traffic and was further delayed. He finally reached his destination two hours late, but he got there! The return journey didn’t fair much better - another accident had occurred on the M25 causing chaos on the surrounding roads and to top it off Mark got a puncture and the aerosol puncture repair did not work. As he waited for assistance from a roadside recovery angel (RAC), he was on the phone assuring his client that the order would be filled. Vehicle repaired and back on the road he reached his destination at 7:00pm delivering the order to the customer that same day - as was promised. This demonstrates a commitment to their clients that is second to none. Not only does R&LS fulfil their delivery promises, they also offer customer support and advice that will guarantee the best options for their clients.

The new offices that have been opened recently are in the thriving enterprise hub of Central Colchester Business Centre, 1 George Williams Way, Colchester CO1 2JS. Mark continues to build on his customer orientated business and has plans to expand further in two years’ time. Our team of solicitors are dedicated to serving and protecting your interests and providing the best possible service.

For Business:

We are proud to offer our legal services from three branch offices in Tendring; Clacton, Dovercourt and Frinton.

Ellisons are pleased to announce the recruitment of solicitor, Fay Debrick, who has recently joined the Clacton branch.

Fay is no stranger to Ellisons, having completed part of her training with the firm back in 2004. Upon qualifying, she has built up her expertise within the Private Client sector and is now a new addition to the Clacton office.

Within her new role, Fay will deal with the preparation of Wills, Administration of Estates, Inheritance Tax Planning and Lasting Powers of Attorney.

Managing Partner and Head of Private Client, Tim Logan, said: ‘‘I am delighted that Fay has joined our ever expanding Private Client Department.’’

‘‘Fay has joined the firm at an exciting period and I’m sure she will be an asset to the Clacton branch.’’

Our local business publication has been running for one year now and I have been pleasantly surprised by the level of support

offered by our little peninsular.

Quotes of “it’s about time we had some good news” and “finally! Something worth reading” spring happily to mind. However I have also heard some ask if it is possible to compile a directory that can be distributed to all businesses so we can continue the momentum that the magazine has started to source locally and keep Tendring trading!

Having thought long and hard about this I have decided to dedicate a page in our next issue to a Tendring Business

Fay commented on her new role: ‘‘I am really pleased to have joined Ellisons Solicitors. The firm has a very broad range of clients and a great ethos. I was brought up in Clacton and still live here, so I already know many of the businesses in and around the town. It’s great to get out there and meet people with my Ellisons hat on.’’

Ellisons has a large Private Client department spread over each of its four offices in Colchester, Clacton, Dovercourt and Frinton. The department has a wide variety of specialisms.
