Welcome

A very warm welcome to you all on our fourth issue.

Firstly may I thank all advertisers, sponsors, and participants who have made Issue 4 a reality.

Time really does fly. As I am writing this we are already making preparations for our first anniversary issue due out in September 2013.

Watch this space for a very special announcement about the first anniversary networking event.

The magazine is fast becoming a “household name” within the Tendring Business Community and we are receiving new enquiries on a regular basis with new companies wishing to advertise or participate in the growth of the publication.

The publication is also being read “outside” Tendring and we continue to get enquiries from Ipswich, Chelmsford, Witham, and even London, about advertising.

Although I hate to turn down potential advertisers the magazine remains exclusively for Tendring businesses. I would also like to welcome Robert Wong on board as the TBCM official photographer.

Robert is well known in the commercial photography world and is a great addition to the team.

Our last networking event was held at the Colne Yacht Club in Brightlingsea and was attended by over 26 businesses.

I would like to express my thanks to all at the Colne Yacht Club for helping to make the event a great success with their hosting and excellent breakfast.

It was great to see so many old and new faces relaxing and networking in a very informal, but above all, great location.

Doing Things Differently

It’s usually the people who do things differently that make the most impact. It’s the inventors, the pioneers and the rebels who change the

world and go down in history. But it’s scary doing things differently to how other people are doing them, isn’t it? It means standing out there by

yourself. It means doing things in ways you haven’t tried and tested before, because new things are, by their very nature, well… new.

But if you don’t try new things sometimes you’re likely to stay exactly where you are. Sometimes that’s not a bad thing. But other times, staying the same can be the absolute worst thing for you and your business.

Sometimes we have to ask ourselves honest questions about how happy we are with the way things are going. Maybe we’re tired of getting the same old lack-lustre job applicants coming for interviews, or our sales have

reached a plateau. We might look around and think, ‘Well, I’m doing what everyone else is.’ But that’s exactly the problem.

Maybe to get better applicants applying for your positions, you’ve got to change the way you advertise your jobs.

Instead of writing the same old boring job descriptions that ask your new candidates to be exactly like the last one (you know, the one who just left or got fired), you can have a fresh think about the type of person you’re open to hiring. Maybe someone a little different would be better this time. Maybe someone with some new ideas?

Or if your sales have reached a brick wall, instead of selling harder in the same ways you’ve always done, try new avenues. Ask yourself where your potential and existing customers hang out online, and go talk to them. On Twitter, Facebook, blogs, wherever. They’re already there, why not go and join them?

Business is changing more rapidly than ever. That means you can’t afford to be afraid of doing things differently. But never fear; you’re a creative, innovative person. You wouldn’t be running a business if you weren’t. So what are you waiting for? Get your thinking cap on!

Beware theill-considered emailEven if your business has just one employee

you will know that when it comes to Employment the law is constantly changing.

In what we hope will become a regular feature for TBCM, Richard Porter, Thompson Smith and Puxon’s (TSP) Head of Employment Law, will share an Employment Law tip with TBCM readers.

This issue’s tip is taken from an article Richard has writtenentitled “Beware the ill-considered email”.

We all now wonder how we ever survived without email.Modern pressures of time and location will often leadsenior managers to despatch a quick confidential emailabout an employee which is intended for the recipient’seyes only. However, notwithstanding the best of intentions, higher rules apply. If the employee makes a “subjectaccess request” under the Data Protection Act or issuesa questionnaire under the Equality Act or subsequentlytakes the employer to an Employment Tribunal, the emailmay have to be produced. TIP: All managers should betaught that they should not commit anything to writingunless they are prepared to answer questions about it in anEmployment Tribunal.

Richard’s article - which also details when certaincommunications may be privileged against disclosure - aswell as a number of checklists and updates covering allareas of employment law, can be viewed or downloadedfrom the TSP website at www.tsplegal.com.

Richard and the TSP Employment team work closely withbusinesses of all sizes to ensure that they are operating inaccordance with the current legal requirements. The teamcan help with practical advice on a wide range of policiesand procedures, from employers’ documentation suchas contracts of employment to advising on employee disputes.

The TSP Employment Law Retainer Agreement is designed to prevent employment difficulties occurring in the first place. The service provides all of the employment law advice and assistance needed to ensure the smooth day-to-day management of your business.

BaillieBiz...The Office Products Specialist in Tendring

BBS was founded in 2004 by Chris Baillie to service the Clacton-on-Sea and surrounding areas. Over the past nine years BBS has grown

steadily and offers not only an on line service but also welcomes business users and the general public alike to call in at their busy shop based in Great Clacton.

BBS now supplies not only the Tendring Business Community, but nationally, across the UK with a guaranteed next day delivery on most “in stock” items.

Chris Baillie, Managing Director says:

“Since BBS started trading nearly 10 years ago we have built, year upon year, an extensive client base that is still growing. Our ethos is to supply our customers with the right product at the right price at the right time.We have an extensive stock of everyday items in our warehouse, thus making it possible, in most cases, to deliver within 24 hours from receipt of orders. Most of our orders are done online and once received the orders are passed on to our warehouse for picking and distribution. Our vehicles are out daily from Monday to Friday delivering to clients with a professional and personal service.

Since the advent of our online services we now deliver to clients’ right across the UK via an overnight delivery network.”BBS also have a retail outlet based in Great Clacton set up for businesses and welcome the general public to call in and purchase their goods “over the counter”.BBS is a family run company and you can be assured of not only a warm welcome, but be served by staff who understand the needs and requirements of their customers and offer advice, where needed, to ensure the products they are buying are right for them and at a fair competitive price.

From a ballpoint pen to a new printer for your computer and all the sundries (far too many to name) you know that you are in good hands at BBS.

Clacton Women in BusinessClacton Women in Business, established in

2011, is a networking group for women in and around the Clacton area. Members

are from a wide range of businesses including banking, hospitality, retail, finance and legal. The group aims to bring together like minded business women to share knowledge and experience.

The group have also been actively involved in raising funds for charity. Two of their members (Julie Searles and Lisa Kiley) recently took part in the Pier to Pier walk and raised over £600 for St Helena Hospice. The next event is to enter team from Clacton Women in Business into the Relay for Life which runs over 24 hours, from midday on September 14th to midday on the 15th. The relay is based in the grounds of Alton Park School and is open to the public during the day, to come along and support.

On the day of Relay For Life Clacton you can expect a celebratory mix of music, games, entertainment, food, fundraising and perhaps a few surprises! Whilst the event is in full swing, team members will take turns to walk

around the track for the duration of the Relay. All events are overnight as this marks the fact that cancer never sleeps. Team Captain Julie Searles (David Charles Financial Services) will be encouraging fellow team members Christine Brown (Jamesons) Karen Healy (Thompson Smith & Puxon) Lisa Kiley (HSBC) Louise Capra (Forever Living) Lisa Alligan (Charnallies) Olivia Hill (Tower Security), Janice Hopkins (M. Hopkins Plumbing & Heating) through the 24 hour event. Anyone wishing to support the CWIB team can do so through the following link: Relay For Life Clacton: Clacton Women in Business - Relay For Life - Cancer Research UK relay.cancerresearchuk.orgRelay For Life 2013 Blueprint. Events like Relay for Life are vital in funding Cancer Research UK’s life-saving work on the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer. By making a donation, you can help more people survive. So please dig deep and sponsor us online - it’s quick, easy and totally secure.

Clacton Women in Business hold monthly lunchtime meetings – if you would like to come along and join us please contact Christine Brown ([email protected]).

NetworkingAs we move in to a more digitally focused

communication era it seems that we, as humans, need to reach out and connect on a

more personal level not only in our private lives but in business too.

There are many types of networking groups from the exclusive clubs to the inclusive relaxed organisations. An exclusive club will offer you the benefits of a regular (sometimes weekly) networking event where you will be the only representative of your trade. You will have to speak at every event and will be expected to deliver referrals at each meeting. Some clubs also expect you to attend every event and if you are unable to, you will have to send a representative of your organisation in your place. There is normally an annual fee for these types of clubs and you will be expected to pay for every event also. These are great if you want the exclusivity and need the structure of these organisations to help build your business with the referrals you will receive.

An inclusive group allows all comers and offers an opportunity for a person to network in a relaxed environment without the pressure to buy. It gives a person the flexibility within their calender that the dynamics of life can sometimes disrupt and helps to build the confidence that will move you and your organisation forward.

You first need to decide what it is you want to achieve as a result of joining a group and what your motivation is. Simply stating that you want sales and your motivation is money will not create the network of contacts that will generate leads or establish a solid foundation for future prospects. The networker intent on sales alone will push potential contacts and clients away.

A better approach is to engage each new contact at a networking group and listen to what they have to say, build trust and create a friendship. Throughout the many years that I have been networking I very seldom overhear a conversation that is purely about buying or selling. Networking creates an environment that generates comfortable business relationships that lead to trade and referrals from your connections. To really kick start your network be sure to use the services of as many of your connections as possible. They in turn will be more likely to use your products or services when they need them.

I can only speak from my own experiences and say that without networking and constant communication within my network I would not be self employed today!

Jamesons - your most trusted business advisor

Forward thinking and innovative - these are the words most readily associated with Jamesons. The business was founded in 1935 and over the

past 60 years has grown into the largest independent accountancy firm in the Tendring area, giving it a unique position in the local business community.

The Jamesons corporate identity is very different to the more traditional image usually associated with chartered accountants, and is a reflection of their proactive approach to the needs of its clients. This holistic approach means that they will listen to what their clients say and tailor an individual solution to meet their requirements.

The experienced Jamesons team offers a wide range of skills enabling them to meet the financial needs of businesses and taxpayers. From accounting ,auditing, and tax through business management, to retirement and succession planning, they have the expertise to offer support and as a consequence are ideally placed to add value to all client relationships.

Jamesons’ client base is as diverse as the advice they are asked to provide. These range in size from newly established sole traders to large owner managed companies. This has allowed their traditional expertise in advising and working with small and medium sized enterprises to be developed further.

In addition to their core services, Jamesons recognise that businesses owners often require more than the traditional accountancy services. Having an accountant who understands how their business works can transform results. As well as working with their clients to develop and grow their business, Jamesons have continued to provide

additional services in their role as ‘most trusted business advisor’. In 2011 they launched their Business Advisory Service to help businesses at every stage of development - from start up to exit - giving their clients the support to move forward with confidence so they can unlock their potential and achieve their goals.

2012 saw the launch of a series of free webinars which run on a monthly basis covering topics such as “The Curse of FTI (Failure to Implement)” and “How to raise needed finance” in addition to hosting regular seminars on topical issues.

The latest initiative is the “Be your own Boss” informal drop in clinic which will be held every second Wednesday of each month from 2.30pm at Jamesons offices. There will also be a banker on hand to offer advice and they are able to call upon legal and HR resources too if required.
