not have time for their bread to rise and so they left with unleavened bread. By referring to the holiday as Chag Ha-Matzot, God is reminding God’s self that we left Egypt quickly to be able to follow God into the wilderness. In other words, God is remembering our ancestor’s faith in God.The name by which we call the holiday, “Passover,” is a reminder that God passed over the Jewish homes, spar-ing the Jewish people from the tenth and fi nal plague, namely the “Slaying of the First Born.”According to Rabbi Levi Yitzchak’s teaching, we both are remembering what the other did to make the Exo-dus from Egypt possible. Inherent in this message is that the Exodus from Egypt happened only because God and the Jewish people together made it possible! Even be-fore our ancestors arrived at Mt. Sinai where, according to tradition, Moses received the Torah and brought it to the people, God and the Jewish people were already co-operating and working together. The way by which God refers to the holiday and the way by which we refer to the holiday is a constant reminder of our need to work with God.The primary goal of the Passover Seder is to experience the Exodus from Egypt. So, as we celebrate Passover together with family and friends this year as we do every year, let us remember that the Exodus was only possible because of human and Divine cooperation, and that is something which we must emulate today to help make our world a better place.

Dear Friends,Spring is almost here and as you can see from our calendar, we are as busy as ever at Temple Emanu-El. I read the following on the URJ website and felt it would be of interest to all. It is written by Rabbi Paul Kipnes who is the spiri-tual leader of Congregation Or Ami in Calabasas, CA.

What does it take to be a positive Jewish role model? • Talk Jewish: Jewish talk is filled with kindness, caring, and concern for the poor, the widow, and the stranger. It involves more kvelling (praising) than kvetching (complaining). Talking Jewish is thoughtful and hopeful. • Show enthusiasm for learning: As Am haSefer (people of the book), we value the contents of our brains. Jewish role models strive to accumulate wisdom, recognizing that when our minds are open, the world opens up with new possibilities. • Read Jewish books and see Jewish themed movies: Fic-tion or non-fiction, historical or fanciful, the Jewish arts can nur-ture a deeper Jewish self-awareness. • Involve yourself in social justice causes: Ever since Moses, Aaron and Miriam stood up to Pharaoh to speak up for the down-trodden, Jews have been in the forefront of every significant so-cial justice cause. Jewish role models get involved because we remember the experience of being at the mercy of others. • Plan a(nother) trip to Israel: Visiting Israel unites the Jewish past and present. Through the mitzvah (religious deed) of Ali-yat haNefesh (spiritual journey of the soul), we seek intellectual, spiritual, and personal transformation. • Sing along at services: The act of praying is an active ex-perience. Engage your brain, move your lips, open your mind, and you may be inspired. Of course, first you need to go to services! • Give tzedakah to Jewish organizations: Jews believe that we have been given sufficient resources so that we may give generously to help others. Your investment in Jewish organiza-tions and synagogues ensures that there will be a Jewish future. • Light Shabbat candles: Once weekly, alone, with family, or with friends enrich or celebrate. You choose your life by mark-ing the holy day. Let the candles adorn your dinner table or light them as you get ready to go out, and then blow them out.Wishing you a Happy Passover,

Lotsa Helping Hands: Why Bother?Your friend lost their job, but still has kids to take care of at home and the spouse is seriously ill. A child has been diagnosed with a serious illness and has to be taken to Boston regularly for care, but the family can’t drive. You know someone who is being treated for cancer and needs all kinds of support, but doesn’t know where to turn. How many of us have encountered situations like this and have said, “What can I do to help?” or even personally, “Where can I turn for help? I’m sinking.”Who wouldn’t do what they could or help find resources? But in our busy day-to-day world, we many times don’t become aware of these needs, or don’t know what the needs are, or how to respond. Especially when these are people close to us, congregants in our community, we would help if we knew what to do.The Chesed Committee at Temple Emanu-El is aware of needs similar to this within our community, has confi-dence that members want to participate, and is in the final stages of assembling how to participate. The program, that was announced earlier this year, is called Lotsa Helping Hands. It’s a nationwide program that they’re adapting specifically for the Temple Emanu-El of Haverhill community. It will enable registered congre-gants to become aware of what those needs are via a secure internet link (individually password protected) and allow members to select when they can help and commu-nicate with each other. Signing up and selecting a pass-word incurs no obligations and doesn’t require members to commit long term or continue to provide a service they may have provided even once. But it does allow them to see what the needs are, assess if the needs are being met in a timely fashion, and decide each and every time, if they can offer some help one time, multiple times, or every time.Communications will go out shortly (via email) to inform congregants how they can register to be a part of this program. They can view areas of need and decide at any point whether they are in a position to “lend a hand” now or at some later time. Contacts will be made available that can answer questions about the program or ask for help in either being one of the Lotsa Helping Hands or how to provide information on a community need.

HEFTY NewsJanuary was a busy month for HEFTY with two major events; Shul-In and Shabbaton. Shul-In was an overnight at the Temple on Saturday, Jan. 19th with activities, games and contests around the theme of Jews in Entertainment. Shul-In is one of the most popular events of the year. Every year we hang out, eat, enjoy activities and icebreakers, watch mov-ies and play games late into the night. We had record atten-dance this year with 14 members enjoying the event.Shabbaton is our annual weekend retreat to the White Moun-tains. 16 teens and 7 adults left the temple on Friday after-noon, January 25th and convoyed up to Campton, NH in time for dinner and a short Shabbat service. We all slept in on Shabbat morning and then had a huge breakfast to celebrate Shabbat, went sledding on a killer hill, hiked, swam at the community sports center, watched movies and much, much more. Sunday morning arrived too soon and after a hectic pack-up and clean-up we returned to the Temple by noon. Our February activity succumbed to the after effects of the “Blizzard”. We would have enjoyed a nice lunch at Wasabi in Salem on Sunday February 10, but alas, this is winter in New England. However, coming up for March is NFTY’s Regional Concalvette the weekend of March 22-24 in Schenectady, NY. We already have several members signed up to go. On March 3, HEFTY will run the food concession at the Temple’s Purim Carnival. This is an annual event for HEFTY under the direction of Max Koffman with the most capable assistance of Jay and Claire Koffman and HEFTY members.Hefty is having an amazing year, with record participation and exciting plans for events and activities over the next few months. Please plan on joining us!!! If you have any ques-tions feel free to contact our Youth Advisor Jesse Kamien at [email protected], Youth Chair Trudy Zakin at [email protected] or Ben Shalek, HEFTY Communica-tions, [email protected].

NEW Programs &NEW Opportunities

Chesed CommitteeDuring the past month of February, the American Heart As-sociation sponsored the Go Red Campaign, for heart health. That, plus Valentine’s Day, celebrating those we love, have warmed us during the depths of winter. As we look forward to Spring, the Chesed Committee applauds those who continue to open their big (and hopefully healthy) hearts by offering rides, meals, telephone calls, or a warm greeting at services. The big hearts at Temple Emanu-El speak. We (actually, Fred Feldman) are diligently working on getting Lotsa Helping Hands (LHH), our “online helpline,” up and run-ning. The goal is to more effectively and effi ciently coordinate member needs and volunteers within our community.Along with Hebrew School parents, members of the Chesed Committee baked Hamantaschen for Purim activities and then distributed lovely plates to homebound temple members. We welcome Karen Newborn to the Committee, and her and her husband, Norton, to our temple.Stay tuned: LHH is coming to your internet soon!

Sharyn Russell, Chairperson

Honor your Mother and your FatherThe Torah tells us that we must always honor our parents. Our Jewish tradition extends that law to say that we must honor all our loved ones, and remember them in death. There is no better way to remember and honor the memory of your departed family members than to have a Memorial Yahrzeit Plaque on the wall of the Temple sanctuary.

You have seen the plaques on the wall of the sanctuary. Each week, the plaques belonging to our beloved departed, whose Yahrzeit, or anniversary of death, is that week, are lighted. This is to recognize the anniversary of that person, and to give us an opportunity to lovingly honor the memory of that person, at least once every year. Also, three times per year, on Yizkor, all the plaques are lit to remember all the loved ones of our Temple.

The plaque contains the name of the deceased, both in English and Hebrew, as well as the date of the person’s death. The plaques are available whenever the sanctuary is open, so someone can always see the name and remember the loving memories of the departed family member. This is a loving way to remember a parent, spouse or child.

The cost of a memorial Yahrzeit plaque is a one-time cost of $250. This cost includes the engraving of the plaque, placing it on the wall, in alphabetical order, and having it lit on Yahrzeit and Yizkor to perpetuity. To purchase a plaque, contact Nancy or the Rabbi at the Temple, (978) 373-3861.

As I write this article, Hamantaschen has been baked, mish loach manot (baskets) are being fi lled and Pu-rim is upon us! Purim gives us a chance to let our hair down (or put it up!) and have some fun. The spirit it brings can be felt everywhere in the temple. It knows no age limits as we dress up, sing and drown out the name of the evil Haman. There

is always anticipation of the theme and of course the dis-appearance of the rabbi. We all wonder who will show up in his place. The Purim Carnival, (March 3rd) thanks to Larry Jacobs and his committee, is one of the most popular events the religious school sponsors each year.We had a lot of participants for the Read-a-Thon this year and they read an equivalent of over 250 books! All the readers receive a certifi cate of participation and an ice cream sundae. The winners, who receive gift certifi cates to Barnes and Noble, for TAPT through grade 2 were: An-gelina Lucia (1st prize), Rebecca Katzen (2nd prize) and Madeline Katzen (3rd prize). For grades 3 through 7 the winners were: Rebecca Spunt (1st prize), Tirzah Shalek (2nd prize) and Max Newman (3rd prize). Passover will be here in a few weeks. Grades 3 - 7 will be celebrating their Model Seder on March 20th. On Sunday, March 31 (6th day of Passover), please do not bring in any food or drink, including coffee into the Temple. The temple will be providing snacks and drinks on this day. Please see me if your child has special dietary needs.

Help support the Temple!!!

Scrip Comes to Temple Emanu-El!Shop with Scrip is an easy way to support Temple Emanu-El. Simply purchase gift cards (or “scrip”) for places where you plan to shop, and use those cards instead of cash or credit. The Temple purchases the gift cards at a discount and sells them at full face value; you use them at full face value at your favorite retailers. The beauty is that you put your regular shopping dollars to work. You earn money for the Temple without spending a single additional penny. Keep cards for Shaw’s, Kohl’s, Starbucks, Target, CVS, Dunkin’ Donuts and many other retailers in your pocket to use just like cash. Scrip can be used for all your household purchases: groceries, clothes, household supplies, gasoline, entertainment, dining, and gifts, to name just a few.Our fi rst two orders, though small, were quite successful. As we increase our participation, this has the potential to be a great fundraiser for the Temple.Order forms and additional information are available in the Temple offi ce and library, as well as on our website at www.TempleEmanu-El.org/fundraising. You may also order scrip online at www.shopwithscrip.com. Watch your email for the next ordering deadline, and thanks for participating! PASSOVER ANNOUNCEMENTS

MAOT CHITTIM - The custom of donating money to a Maot Cittim Fund immediately before Passover is an ancient one. Maot Chittim means “portions of wheat,” referring to wheat needed to bake matzah. Since during Passover Jews may not eat bread or products that ferment, a special fund is established to assist the poor in purchasing Passover necessities. Please consider helping those not as fortunate as you are and send your contribution to the Rabbi Ira L. Korinow Chesed Fund.

Checks can be made out to “Temple Emanu-El” and indicate “Maot Chittim” on the memo line.

MECHIRAT CHAMETZ -It is customary before Passover to free ourselves of leaven in our homes via “Mechirat Chametz,” the selling of the leaven. Rabbi Korinow will be pleased to assist in the process. Please call him at the Temple office or fill in the written agreement to be found below and mail it to Rabbi Korinow with a contribution to buy it back after Passover. Chametz should be sold by the morning of Monday, March 25th

PROJECT MAZON - In addition to selling your chametz, you may wish to donate this food to those who are hungry. If you can bring whatever food items you have to the Temple office by noon on Monday, March 18th, we will deliver it to a local organization for distribution to the needy. A monetary contribution can also be made to “MAZON: A Jewish Response to Hunger.” For an envelope, please call the Temple Office.

SHARE YOUR PASSOVER SEDER - Passover has traditionally been a time when families, relatives and non-relatives join together in celebration of the Passover seder. Many small families band together for the seder. Single individuals, like college students who are away from home, or others who have no family, need to be invited to a seder. Please call the Temple office to express your desire to be invited to a seder, or to express your desire to invite another family or individual to your seder. The Temple staff will serve as sensitive and careful Passover seder matchmakers.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Authorization for the Selling of Chametz

I authorize Rabbi Ira Korinow to sell my chametz to someone who is not Jewish in the community. I also agree to buy back my chametz at the end of Passover.

Enclosed is my contribution to tzedakah (charity) for $ ____________ .

Sunday, March 10 • 9:30amTracing Jewish Roots Along the River MysticMystic River Jewish Communities Project

East Boston was the port-of-entry for thousands of European Jewish immigrants during the early 20th century – and it is where they established the fi rst Jewish cemetery in 1844 in the Greater Boston area. In the following decades, they surged into the communities surrounding the Mystic River!A few decades later, the numbers dwindled as the fl ow moved outward in all directions to suburban communities. But their roots were in these cities and towns. There lie stories of determination, endurance and success in America.Lisa Berenson of the Jewish Cemeteries Association of Massachusetts (JCAM) will be visiting us and presenting a slide show on this and other projects that the Association is involved in as well as talking to us about the social, cultural, historic and artistic elements of Jewish cemeteries in Mas-sachusetts.JCAM is preserving this history with the Mystic River Jewish Communities Project that will be housed in the famous chapel at East Boston’s Ohabei Shalom Cemetery. It will be dedicated to teaching the skills and inspiring the values of the Jewish pioneers. This project aims to transport you back in time to where life along the Mystic River – the towns of East Boston, Chelsea, Everett, Revere, Medford, Malden, Somerville and Winthrop – was bursting with Jewish culture, music, and business. Our speaker aims to bring to life the sights, sounds and stories of these early Jewish immigrant communities to educate, pro-mote, and strengthen the ongoing work of transforming the Ohabei Shalom Chapel in East Boston into the Mystic River Jewish Community Exhibit.

The Adult Education committee will sponsor a breakfast starting at 9:30 am and the program will begin at 10:00 am. There is no registration fee required although an RSVP would be appreciated to the Temple Offi ce to fa-cilitate planning.

Save the Date! Adult Education

Have You Remembered Temple Emanu-El?A bequest to Temple Emanu-El is an excellent way of fulfill-ing the mitzvah of securing a future for our community. When preparing your will or when making changes, please remember the Temple. Your gift will provide for you and your loved ones a lasting way of supporting Jewish life in the greater Haverhill area.

For the sake of Jewish continuity, remember Temple Emanu-El!

Hospital VisitsRabbi Korinow visits the Merrimack Valley Hospital in Haverhill weekly or as needed.

The Rabbi wants to visit any member who is in a hospital. If you know that a member of Temple Emanu-El is hospital-ized in any hospital, please call the Rabbi to let him know.

If you are interested in talking about a potential gift to the Campaign as well as payment options, please call me at my office (978) 372-1451 or at home (978) 685-4535.

Thank you! Larry Cowan, Chair
