FROM THE RABBI’S STUDY

With Rosh Hashanah, YomKippur, and Sukkot behindus, there’s a little “dryspell” before we come toour next holiday, Chanuk-kah. But still basking in theglow of our Holy Day ser-

vices, we seemed much more engaged in our comingtogether this year. Whether it was because of the trou-bled times in which we are living or for some otherreason, it seemed that the sounds of prayer in oursanctuary were more resonant than in recent times. The room seemed fuller, and more people stayed formore services. People didn’t leave the building soquickly either once services were over. While I don’tknow the reason(s) for the change, I know that I foundit very haimish and family-like, and that felt verygood.

As the holy days concluded I overheard someonementioning that he thought we Jews were not only the“people of the Book,” but perhaps even more so thepeople of the calendar. Depending, of course, on one’slevel of observance, it is true that traditional Jews’lives really are guided and shaped by the calendar. Weare aware of differences between the Gregorian calen-dar and the Jewish one. Not every person observes theJewish holy days and holidays, so we have more – orat least different – observances to keep in mind. If weare really on top of things, we know that Jewish cele-brations and observances never come “early” or“late”; they come at exactly the same time each yearin the Jewish calendar. But since most of us don’t usethe Jewish calendar as our primary calendar, it cer-tainly seems that Jewish dates are all over the place.

But as one of the people attending Torah study onYom Kippur afternoon wisely pointed out, evenkashrut, the system of Jewish dietary laws, probablyexists as much as a means of making us mindful ofhow we live our lives in relationship as it is a way ofhaving us follow certain laws and practices. In otherwords, while we may not follow every Jewish dietarylaw to the letter, the fact that we are mindful of whatwe eat, how it is brought from field to table, etc., may

be as important as the laws themselves. The dietarylaws can be seen in that light as a mechanism for help-ing us to be more mindful of the relationship of ourbodies to what nourishes them.

So, too, the rest of Jewish law and practice. The Tal-mud contains volumes of interpretations of law. Theexistence of so much interpretation means that there isprobably more than one way to do most of the thingswe do. Choosing the best way to do something is aprocess that also benefits from mindfulness. Through-out the Jewish world there are variations on customsand practices that have their basis in Jewish law. Oneexample that comes to mind is the amount of time thatis supposed to pass between when one eats meat andwhen one eats dairy. Another is the number of candlesthat one lights on the eve of Shabbat. If you thinkabout it at all, you realize that it probably doesn’t mat-ter how much time passes between eating dairy andmeat, or how many candles you light to welcomeShabbat. What is important is that you are mindfulthat there are implications to what you eat, how youprepare it, etc., just as it is important that you aremindful of the need for and wisdom of having Shab-bat.

Somehow I got the impression that there was a greatdeal of mindfulness in our midst during the HolyDays. The challenge for us will be to see if we cankeep that mindfulness going, and perhaps even to ex-pand it, throughout the year. We all benefit when wethink beyond ourselves; the way in which we live ourlives really does matter. Some ways of living our liveshave proven themselves over time to be better thanothers, benefitting more than just ourselves. As wemove toward Thanksgiving this year, the lessons ofthe Holy Days would be good ones to keep in mind.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGEA few days ago I read a storyabout how China seems to havecollectively lost their respect forhuman dignity. The story wasabout an incident where a childwas run over and many peoplewere there (it is China after all) butnot a single person stopped to help.

This past year there has been muchdiscussion about civility in our

public discourse. There is a growing realization that ourinability to deal with broad range of problems is related tothe destructive ways in which those problems are beingaddressed.

Now that the business of operating the Temple is back ontrack, I find that I am increasingly being called to managethe relationships in our synagogue.

I am alarmed by our own lack of civility. What are weteaching our kids about respect when we cannot show theproper respect to each other. We have always had issueswith communication. Early last year, I set up some emailgroups so that everyone who was active on a committeewould be in a particular group email and we would all getthe same message at once. What happened there is thatsome people discovered the technology was not workingfor them and did not participate. You make a choice whenyou do nothing.

Another behavior I have come across is that we often sayone thing and then, like a game of telephone, a few weekslater discover that the thing said was interpreted to meansomething completely different. People get offended andnow there is even more to clean up than if someone hadjust asked the clarifying questions– did I hear you cor-rectly? You said you want ……..?

Clearly, being civil to one another has to mean somethingmore than politeness. We need to be able to ask toughquestions and present our cases when we feel our interestsare not being addressed.

I think we might consider empathy. Empathy begins withthe awareness of another person's feelings. If you knewthat I had been experiencing the stress of an illness or lossof job, would you take a step back before judging mywords or actions, or would you ask yourself if perhaps this

was not a good time for me and maybe we could table thisdiscussion for a bit..? Would you complain about anotherperson or understand that perhaps life was just not easyright now?

Empathy is closely related to compassion, but empathymust also come before compassion. When we feel empathyfor someone we are getting emotional information aboutthem and their situation. By collecting information aboutother people's feelings, you get to know them better. Asyou get to know others on an emotional level, you arelikely to see similarities between your feelings and theirs, and between your basic emotional needs and theirs. Whenyou realize that someone else's basic emotional needs aresimilar to yours, you are more able to identify with them, relate to them, and empathize with them. Then, you mighteven listen to them differently, respectfully and withoutjudging. This can only create better understanding of thecommunication and a better relationship for all those in-volved.

Haim G. Ginott (1922–1973) was a school teacher in Is-rael, He was also a child psychologist, psychotherapist andparent educator. He pioneered techniques for speakingwith children that are still taught today. His book, BetweenParent and Child, stayed on the best-seller list for over ayear and is still popular today. This book gives "specificadvice derived from basic communication principles thatwill guide parents in living with children in mutual respectand dignity."

I am taking liberties here by paraphrasing one of his mostfamous quotes. I think we all need to take some personalresponsibility for the ways in which we interact with oneanother:

I am the decisive element in the room.It is my personal approach that creates the climate. It ismy daily mood that makes the weather. I possess tremen-dous power to make another’s life miserable or joyous.

I can be a tool of torture or an instrument of inspiration.I can humiliate or humor, hurt or heal. In all situations, itis my response that decides whether a crisis will be esca-lated or de-escalated.

B’Shalom,

Cindy Berk

EDUCATION NEWS

Dear Temple Israel Commu-nity:

I am not one to take forgranted the generosity and

hard work of others. I am so grateful when peoplepitch in to make a complex program a successful pro-gram. With more than 60 students, teachers and teach-ing assistants, it takes many hands to drive interestingprogramming forward. Todah.

The Religious School is already off to a fabulous startdue, to a great extent, to our wonderful parent volun-teers:

Thank you to Jessica Lindsey and Mel Waldorf,Leslie Sauter, Bella Karlin, Tracy and RogerBecker, and Steve Ellson for “working” the Bookand a Cookie events. The children were introducedto a Jewish author and illustrator. We are big onencouraging literacy. Plus the religious schoolearned some much-needed dollars.

Thank you to Rosa Goldberg and Nick Sauter whohelped with the challah-making program. The chil-dren really enjoyed making the challah…..andthen eating it. And thank you to the Great HarvestBakery on College who generously donated thewhole wheat dough.

Thank you to all the Simchat Torah helpers: Rosaand Marshall Goldberg and Karyn Ogorzalek. Anda GIANT thank you to Silvia Kruglikov who pro-vided the homemade honey cake. Yum!!

Thank you to Raviv Moore and Tyree Jackson foraccompanying me on Jewish Music Sundays. Wemake a great trio, if I must say so myself. And Ithink we may be joined in the near future by NoahBerk, sixth grade teaching assistant, on ukulele. Itgives me great joy when I see the students hum-ming a melody later in the day that they learned atour Jewish Music session. (And by the way…..anyone and everyone is invited to these sessions. It’s 20 minutes of musical ruach. Our next JewishMusic Sunday is November 20th from 9:30 – 9:50)

Thank you to David Graber who has volunteeredto teach Hebrew to the advanced Hebrew learnersin the Amitim class. As that class has three distinct

groups of Hebrew-proficient learners, we needed athird teacher to challenge the advanced students.

Thank you to Heather Dutton who has volunteeredto lead the Sunday morning tefillah service. Weare eager for students to be exposed to and learnthe prayers and songs. Heather is a remarkableleader and we are grateful.

And an amazing thank you to Jerri Kaplan who isembarking on a project with the Amitim studentsto create two tapestries that will be displayed onthe inside of the ark. Each student will design andcreate their own rendition of The Tree of Life outof material. They will begin the project at theAmitim retreat, November 12 – 13, and the tapes-tries will be installed before May 2012. Thank youJerri for leading this wonderful mitzvah project.

And my gratitude goes to the Education Commit-tee, the Snack Committee, the Holiday Committee, the Class led Shabbat Committee and the Classparents who give of themselves even though theirplates are very, very full. Thank you.

The religious school has an interesting program com-ing up. Each student will be making a glass kiddushcup. Glass artist, Trish Culbert will be leading a work-shop with all the students (Alef Bet and Gimmel Daleton Sunday, Oct 30, and Grades 4 – Amitim onWednesday, Nov. 9th). Last year Trish led a workshopto make Chanukah hanging decorations and they cameout spectacularly. I expect the same this year.

Mazel tov to Daniel Waldman on his upcoming barmitzvah!

WANT TO HELP CREATE AN INTER-FAITH OUTREACH COMMITTEE?

Are you a partner in an interfaith relationship? Do youhave family or friends who have non-Jewish partners?Do you love Temple Israel and wish you could help eve-ryone to feel as good about our synagogue as you do?Here’s your chance! We are starting an Interfaith Out-reach Committee to better support our interfaith familieswho are giving us the gift of raising their children Jew-ish.

More than half of our member families are interfaithones. Often, these families have special needs that cancause stress in the home. The committee will discusspossible programming and what participants believe tobe the questions and concerns of our interfaith familiessuch as: Do you wonder how other Catholic parentsmanage the parents and in-laws? Are you an atheist un-certain of how to talk about God to the kids? How can Iteach Jewish rituals and customs when I don't knowthem myself? Will dying Easter eggs or going to afriend's Easter Egg Hunt undermine the kids’ Jewishidentity?

Together we’ll brainstorm program ideas and gatheringsas we prepare for the arrival of the next rabbi. Shouldyou be interested in starting this committee, contactb o a r d m e m b e r K i m b e r l e e M a c V i c a rat [email protected] or 510-299-0450. Kimberleeis not chairing the committee, but is merely bringingpeople together to get us started, so if you are interestedin chairing, please let her know. Thank you.

PAGE 6 TEMPLE ISRAEL BULLETIN

One of the burning passions of my adult life has been my love for, and fascination with, almost all things Israeli. I try tovisit the country every year, I find both ancient and modern Israeli history not only interesting, but also deeply personal, and the more I experience of the country and its culture, cuisine, ethnic and religious mix, worldview, and a host of otherthings, the more I want to know and understand. Part of my retirement plans include making aliyah and working there asa volunteer as much of the time as I can.

But before any of that happens, I wanted to share my love of Israel with you to the greatest extent possible in this, mylast year as rabbi of Temple Israel. Fortunately, our own Temple member, Howard Sidorsky, in his capacity as a memberof the East Bay Jewish Community Relations Council, brought to my attention the possibility of having some very highquality Israel-focused programming here at the Temple over the course of the coming year. I jumped at the opportunityand wanted to share with you the first fruits of the collaboration with the Jewish Community Federation of the East Bay,the Jewish Community Relations Council, and Temple Israel.

Temple Israel will host a five-session adult education program on the third Wednesday of five months, beginning Sep-tember 21, continuing through February 15, 2012. Under the general heading of “Momentous Moments in Israeli His-tory,” the series will feature Riva Gambert, well-known, highly-respected, and beloved member of the East Bay JewishFederation’s staff, speaking on these subjects:

November 16: “Harry [Truman] and Zion: Presidential Decision-Making and the State of Israel”December 21: “From Garibaldi Street to Jerusalem: The Hunt for Adolph Eichmann”January 18: “Saving the Lost Tribe: The Rescue of Ethiopian Jewry”February 15: “Exodus 1947: How One Ship Changed the Course of History”

All lectures are free and open to the public. Programs begin at 7:30 p.m. and will include time for questions and an-swers.

Even if you believe that you are well-versed in these moments in Israeli history, it will be worth your time to hear Riva’sperspective on them. She is an undisputed expert on these subjects, is one of the most knowledgeable and affable speak-ers in the Bay Area, and her profound love and respect for Israel is unmatched. Please mark your calendars now andbring your friends with you.

THE MIDWAY SHELTER COOKING PROJECT

The Temple Israel Dinner Cooks are proud to have been preparing dinner once a month for the residents of theMidway Shelter for the past several years. Many religious and community organizations in Alameda take partin this activity, so that the women and children who are putting their lives back together at the Shelter get anourishing, healthy dinner each day.

Please note that there are several ways you can help with this mitzvah. If you’d like to participate We needshoppers, cooks, and someone to deliver the meal to the Shelter. The meal always includes protein, one ormore vegetables and/or fruits, a starch, and juice or milk. In October, Nancy Freed, Gretel Gates, Mary Gold, and Alison Harris shopped, prepared and delivered chicken wraps, bean salad, “Neiman Marcus” cookies, andjuice to the Shelter.

We cook on the third Wednesday of each month. Our next cooking session will be on November 16. Four orfive volunteers are needed, and if you’d like to help, please contact Alison Harris at 521-3375 or [email protected].

WHAT A WONDERFUL BREAK-THE-FAST!

At the conclusion of the Yom Kippur services, the congregation enjoyed a delicious, heimish, Break-the-Fast.

Many thanks to the Ritual Committee for hosting this event, and the Board of Directors for budgeting themoney for it! And, this couldn’t have happened without the hard work of our volunteers: Beverly Blatt, RitaDiamond Cohen, Gretel Gates, Mary Gold (chair), Dorie Guess-Behrstock, Alison Harris, Lauren Helfand, CJKingsley, Blessing Kobey, Elaine Kofman, and Doris Weiner –Gluckman.
