TEMPLE BETH ISRAEL BULLETIN
AT TEMPLE BETH ISRAEL, NOVEMBER IS A WONDERFUL MONTH FOR THANKSGIVING AND TZEDAKAH
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
We are truly blessed and thankful to be members of a Jewish congregation that will be celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2019. We share and enjoy the benefits derived from the commitment and vision of 25 families who believed that Longboat Key needed a house of worship as a Jewish community center, for religious, education and social functions. Remarkably, the Temple building was constructed through the generous financial efforts of these families and others, without the burden of a mortgage. During the past 40 years the Temple membership grew and thrived with more than 500 members. Today, we continue to provide an outstanding array of religious, educational, intellectual and social opportunities, even though our membership is now 264 members. Our current membership has a similar vision and foresight for the future.
The month of November is an excellent time to show our thanks for all that the Temple makes available to us and to give Tzedakah for the continuation of these programs and activities. Of the many opportunities available, two of my favorites for the immediate impact they create, are the Leadership Circle and the Building Maintenance Fund. The funds from the Leadership Circle provide additional resources to enhance our operational budget for all religious and educational programs. The monies from the Building Maintenance Fund enable us to provide essential maintenance, repairs and replacement of outdated equipment. Your financial support will make you feel good that you participated! Projects that have been delayed or wait listed will be accomplished through your tzedakah.
You can make a positive and significant difference in the life of Temple Beth Israel. A contribution amount of $600 to $5000 enables you to join the Leadership Circle. You are recognized for your Tzedakah on a permanent plaque on display in the Social Hall. A check, in any amount, will enable the Building Maintenance Fund to support needed projects. For information on how to contribute, please call Jen or Shana at the Temple office, 941-383-3428.
Shalom,
H. Murray Blueglass, President

FROM THE RABBI’S STUDY
Germany, in what was Austria, and the Sudetenland. Engraved In our minds are pictures of centuries old buildings and more recent magnificent landmarks of Jewish life in Germany going up in flames. In 1988, the 50th anniversary of Kristallnacht, I was living in Sharon, Pennsylvania. It is a small town, between Pittsburgh and Cleveland, with a small Jewish community. A few days before the anniversary, I wondered if I could find out what the local reaction in Sharon, Jewish and non-Jewish, was to the horrific events. I went to the public library and asked to look at the microfilm of the local newspaper for November, 1938. I didn’t expect to find much. Several hours later I left the library with 28 pages of notes. On Friday night, November 9th I plan to share with the congregation some of what I discovered and what my reactions were then and what they are now. My Tuesday morning class is now a Tuesday morning discussion group. We will meet on Tuesdays at 11:00 a.m. except for the second Tuesday of the month when I attend the Sarasota Manatee Rabbinic Association meeting. Bring questions or topics for discussion. This can be a good opportunity to discuss what we did over the high holidays or, for that matter, the format of our weekly Shabbat services. In advance, let me promote our Miniversity. I am looking forward to sharing some background on Hanukkah, specifically why we light the lights the way we do by sharing some not so well-known texts from the Talmud. My session on Christmas will have nothing to do with the standard Jewish dilemmas at this time or whether Jews are supposed to eat Chinese food on Christmas eve or during Christmas day. (I was once seriously asked which is the proper time.) Instead I want to focus on some obscure, if not practically forgotten, Jewish folk customs surrounding that day. I will say something about my sessions on the Haggadah in the spring. Meanwhile, be well and join me on this journey of Jewish learning.
Rabbi Stephen L. Sniderman
We should never take our synagogues for granted especially this year, the 80th anniversary of Kristallnacht. During the evening of November 9th – November 10th, 1938, an explosion of fury and hatred against Jews in Germany resulted, among other devastation, arrests and deaths, in the ransacking, burning, desecration and destruction of synagogues in

FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S DESK
I am writing to enlist you as our Goodwill Ambassador. What does that entail, you say?
Temple affiliation patterns are expected to change over the next several years, creating a more competitive environment. As priorities shift, members continue to demand quality programming and the kind of hospitality that will keep them coming back. The Union for Reform Judaism calls this “Audacious Hospitality.” We call it our “Temple Family!” It is time to dedicate ourselves to share the enthusiasm we have for our amazing Temple with as many people as possible. You can lead by example. This is where you, our goodwill ambassador, can make a difference. Take it upon yourself to attend services, participate in programs and most of all, volunteer in running some of the many activities. We are in dire need of volunteers. I would be delighted to hear from you to explore your passion and encourage your participation.
We are blessed with a caring, scholarly, engaging and dedicated Rabbi, Stephen Sniderman. Our services are inspiring, and the sermons are informative and thought provoking. We have a choir that continues to thrill us with ever improving music, thanks to Dr. Ann Stephenson Moe and her many professionals and volunteers.
Our programming continues to improve with every added offering. Please review
this issue for the many events we’ve prepared for you this season. Ask your friends, members and nonmembers alike, to join you in registering for all the great programs.
Our Bulletin, Directory and publicity are the envy of other organizations, thanks to Dr. Sandy Packard, Allan Goldfarb and Barbara Pressman. Our dedicated and talented leaders, with President Murray Blueglass at the helm, are working diligently to provide us with the level of expertise, financial responsibility and vision for a better organization. Get to know your very competent board members and I believe you will be impressed with the level of excellence they bring to the table. Their enthusiasm is catching, let it rub off on you.
It is time to let the secret out, to tell as many people as possible and to make it our mission to bring in guests and visitors with the hope we can engage them in a meaningful way. It is nice to have a hidden gem, it is far better to have a shining diamond.
This coming year we will celebrate our 40th Anniversary, that is quite an accomplishment and a responsibility to perpetuate the “Center for Jewish Living on Longboat Key.” Help your temple continue its progress towards the next forty years.

BETH ISRAEL WOMEN PRESIDENT’S LETTER
Beth Israel Women is a group of wonderful, smart, maybe even sassy women, who run an organization that helps our Temple. where and whenever we can. In addition to contributing to the Temple funds, we also hold monthly meetings where we invite interesting people to inform and entertain us. Our president, Sylvia Pastor, fixes up a lunch that leaves everyone raving about the cuisine. This month we were enlightened by the poetry of Lucia Blinn, commenting on the vagaries and oddities of life. Everyone enjoyed her work. She also kindly donated a portion of each book she sold to the Temple. Thank you, Lucia.
Our next speaker will be Al Tripodi, who will speak to us about healthy aging. Dr. Tripoldi is a board-certified geriatrician with thirty-five years of private practice in Syracuse, N.Y. He is also affiliated with the Ruben center for healthy aging which is part of the Federation Center in Sarasota. His credentials go on, but you can hear from him and learn as well at next month’s meeting - slated for Tuesday, November 13.
In addition to all of this, BIW runs the fashion show of fashion shows. This year’s spectacular will be held at the newly renovated Michael’s on East, The date for that is February 4th. Men are invited as well.
We at BIW would love to have every female member of our Temple also be a member of BIW. Joining costs only $40 a year. To eat Sylvia’s cooking is worth twice that much! So, if you haven’t joined us yet, please do. We have a wonderful Chanukah dinner planned among many other things. Tune in next month to learn more. Judy Goldstein, Co-President, BIW

BETH ISRAEL WOMEN PRESIDENT’S LETTER BOOKS & BROWN BAGS
The six session BIW sponsored book club starts on Monday, November 12 with Judy Glass discussing The Saturday Wife by Naomi Ragen. Come at 12:30 with a sandwich or snack; coffee and dessert will be available. Each meeting begins at 1:00 p.m. and lasts about one hour.
Tena Tessler will be the facilitator for And After the Fire by Lauren Belfer on Monday, December 12. This is a very provocative book that tries to establish the authenticity of a piece of music supposedly written hundreds of years ago. The action moves back and forth between events several centuries ago and the machinations of members of academia today. All of the action is bound up in the life of the young woman whose uncle found the piece of music and left it to her when he died.
Join BIW and attend these very stimulating book discussions.

FROM THE LIBRARY
What follows is a book review by Judy Glass. We’ll be discussing this book at the April 8 meeting of Books & Brown Bags.
Hope and Honor: A Memoir of a Soldier’s Courage and Survival by Sidney Shachnow and Jann Robbins
This well written, fascinating account about one of the most highly decorated military heroes in this country, is all the more compelling because Major General Sid Shachnow - a Vietnam War veteran who received two silver and three bronze stars with V for Valor– is a Jew who was born in Lithuania and survived the Holocaust by escaping the Kovno concentration camp there. The details of his military exploits and achievements are amazing from any perspective; more so because so much is attributable to the skills he developed surviving the camp. My only criticism: I wish Sid had made a stronger connection between his two lives and the connection between his experiences in the camp, his rise in military ranks, and his incredible leadership skills. This may be more a matter of the collaborative authorship. An autobiography might have revealed more of his emotions and personal life. It’s a book that you should look forward to reading.

BEYOND THE BIMAH: Steven & Gayle Kammerman
A Serendipitous Introduction to TBI
Sixteen years ago Steve and Gayle Kammerman were vacationing in Sarasota when, by a stroke of coincidence, their Rabbi from Philadelphia, Simeon Maslin, was a visiting lecturer at Temple Beth Israel. They paid a visit to our Temple to see him. It was then that they met Rabbi Eisenstat and they were so impressed with him that they told themselves if ever they were to move to Sarasota, TBI would be at the top of their list!
All these years later, we are delighted to introduce you to two of Sarasota’s newest residents and TBI new members! Steve and Gayle landed in Sarasota after deciding to migrate their Florida home from Del Ray Beach to here. Their decision to join TBI was in part attributed to their wonderful first impression 16 years ago and cemented by the robust programming of the Michael B. Eisenstat Miniversity.
Because of her particularly strong yearning to continue her journey into Jewish Studies, Gayle explains “it is very important to me to be in school.” Over the past 17 years, she has immersed herself in courses both with The Florence Melton School of Jewish Learning- the largest pluralistic adult Jewish education network in the world and through Gratz College, the oldest independent and pluralistic college for Jewish studies in North America.
The primary draw for Steve is attending services at Temple, “I’ve had ups and downs in my life and I find it soothing to sit in services, not to have my cell phone, and give thanks for what I have.”
The Marriage of Ingenuity and Vegetables
Though Steve began his career as a mechanical engineer and Gayle as a medical technologist, over the last 41 years they have cultivated a farming empire out of collards, kale, sweet potatoes and cabbage! Back in their twenties, an opportunity came along to help a failing farm. Steven, who approached the challenge as if it were a case study straight out of the Wharton School’s curriculum (his alma mater), advised the farmer to cut out the middlemen. He also suggested he turn it into a year round business where they could act as distributors without being limited to the growing season in the north, by finding growers in the south that could produce throughout the winter. Initially they helped to identify and manage growers to work with, but then as they

learned the business they established their own farms. Today they are the founders/owners of J & B Farms, which grows and distributes wholesale produce. In the last twenty years they have expanded the company’s customer base to the largest retail groceries chains on the east coast.
The Northern Connection
Steve and Gayle have very deep roots in Philadelphia. Steve received a BS degree in Engineering with honors from the University of Pennsylvania. He has two Master’s Degrees, in Systems Engineering and Operations Management, from the University of Pennsylvania.
His final degree he earned while on a forced sabbatical from the farming business due to severe injuries he sustained after being struck by a truck. For a stretch of time he required multiple surgeries. He embraced this setback as an opportunity to go back to school in his fifties, excited to earn yet another degree. In 2000, he graduated with an MBA in Finance and Marketing from La Salle University, with Beta Gamma Sigma academic honors.
After all the medical procedures Steve required, his doctors said he couldn’t live up north during the winter due to all the metal in his body. They suggested they live in a warm climate, which is what precipitated their move to Florida several years back. Though they began in Del Ray Beach, they decided to relocate to Sarasota as they felt the West Coast may be the better match. Their plan is to spend eight or nine months here and return to their northern home in Margate on Absecon, a barrier island on the Jersey Shore.
Carrying Out Tzadakah
“If we don’t help other people, why are we here?” The Kammermans
The central philosophy that has guided the Kammermans throughout their life - irrespective of how little or much they have had is their strong belief in finding ways to serve others and pay it forward. One of the fascinating and enduring service projects that Gayle embraced was capturing the oral histories of holocaust survivors. Between 1984 and 1990, after being trained on how to conduct interviews, she was instrumental in documenting with painstaking detail the experiences of many survivors. Gail started at “The Gathering” of holocaust survivors in Philadelphia. From there Dr. Nora Levin a professor of History at Gratz College took charge of continuing the interviews and research. Dr Levin was the founding director of the Holocaust Oral History Archive. Gayle was dedicated and instrumental in creating the oral histories of many survivors - many of whom never shared any of their story with their own families - before they passed. She truly wanted to save the stories so their families could know what really happened.
The Kammermans are sure to be visible and very engaged members of Temple Beth Isreal and the greater community. We are honored to be amongst the first to welcome them “home”!

Reflecting on impeachments, one Constitutional Convention delegate famously declared, “A good magistrate will not fear them. A bad one will be kept in fear of them.”But when is it appropriate to impeach a president, and should it be done? In their timely new book, To End a Presidency, Laurence Tribe and Joshua Matz take us inside democracy’s ultimate sanction — the power of
presidential impeachment — from its complex past to its role in today’s fractured political world. Hear from these constitutional authorities when they sit down with another expert on impeachment, former US Representative Elizabeth Holtzman, a member of the House Judiciary Committee who voted to impeach President Nixon, and CNN’s Jeffrey Toobin.

Ronen Bergman — “arguably Israel’s best investigative reporter,” in the words of David Remnick — pulls back the curtain on the country’s most effective secret weapon. Hear gripping accounts of the dangerous mis-sions undertaken by the Mossad, Shin Bet and the IDF to root out Israel’s enemies before they could attack the Jewish state. And explore the thorny ethical questions that Israeli forces have grappled with as they protected their homeland.

GLOBAL ISSUES SERIES IIIThursdays, 10:30 am
LONGBOAT KEY PROGRAMTemple Beth Israel
– JANUARY 17 –Reflections on U.S. Policy in Post-Soviet Russia
and Eastern EuropeThe end of the Soviet Union was the greatest strategic shift in the last fifty years. Reflecting on his work as a U. S. policymaker and representative in Russia and Eastern Europe over four decades, Amb. John Tefft will offer his thoughts on U.S. policy and the way ahead for the United States in this region which is critical for U.S. national security interest.
– JANUARY 24 –Russian Covert Intervention in the 2016 U.S. Electionand the Role of Intelligence in American Democracy
Dr. James Bruce will unpack the key controversies surrounding the election of the 45th U.S. President. How successful were Russian efforts to influence the outcome of that election? How should U.S. intelligence and law enforcement, vital to American democracy, and accustomed to attacks by Russia, counter Russian intervention when they are also under attack from the U.S. President himself?
– JANUARY 31 –Eurasia’s Strategic Realignment:
The Challenge to U.S. PredominanceThe dominant feature of Eurasia’s emerging security landscape is rapid strategic realignment among virtually all actors on which the United States depends. S. Enders Wimbush will discuss what this emerging security landscape looks like. What are the key actor’s objectives and strategies, and what challenges does the U.S. face to defend America’s interests in this dynamic geostrategic environment?
– FEBRUARY 7 –The German ProblemBrexit leaves Europe unbalanced, with Germany as the biggest and richest nation, and France a poor second. The Germans have learned – painfully and profoundly – to duck responsibility, but it is being thrust upon them. Martin Walker explores how Europe will cope, without widening its north-south divide.
– FEBRUARY 14 –The Impossible Presidency
Dr. Jeremi Suri notes the American presidency changed from the limited role envisaged by the Founding Fathers to the most powerful job in the world. In recent years the presidency became a victim of its own success. Now it is almost impossible to fulfill the expectations placed upon it.
– FEBRUARY 28 –The Future of War
The future of war is not what most think. The 21st century is maturing into a world mired in perpetual conflict. The weak defeat the strong, and battlefield victory achieves little. Forget what you know about war – it’s obsolete. Dr. Sean McFate will explain the new rules of war, andhow to win.
– MARCH 7 –
– FEBRUARY 21 –The Divided Kingdom of Britain
Britain is going through an identity crisis. With Brexit, Britain will detach from Europe and focus on internal affairs. Alternatively, the marriage of Prince Harry to a divorced, mixed race American has generated enthusiasm, with citizens embracing a more multi-cultural, multinational life. Baroness Margaret Jay will discuss what happens when normal conventions have been shattered. What does this imply for the future?
Tensions in the Ukraine and Why It MattersSeveral years ago Russia-backed forces and Ukrainian nationalists came face to face. Today Ukraine is increasingly at the intersection of Russian, American, European and even Chinese interests. Foreign correspondent Nolan Peterson, the first U.S. journalist to be embedded with the Ukrainian army, will discuss the current situation and why it matters to the United States. Mr. Peterson will explain why the U.S. needs to strengthen its diplomatic presence in the Ukraine or risk losing influence to its adversaries in Eastern Europe.
– MARCH 14 –India: Rise on the World Stage
Dr. Alyssa Ayres will look at India’s emergence into the global economy and world stage. After decades of looking inward, India’s leaders want the country to be featured in the ranks of the world’s great powers. India’s vastness, history, and diversity render it incomparable to any other democratic power.
– MARCH 21 –Understanding World Leaders
What do we know about the backgrounds, experiences, world views, leadership styles, and policymaking predispositions of current world leaders of people like Vladimir Putin, Xi Jinping, Kim Jong-un, Angela Merkel, Bashar al-Assad, Emmanuel Macron, and Aung San Suu Kyi? Dr. Margaret Hermann takes us on a tour to learn more about current world leaders.
– MARCH 28 –The End of White Christian America
The United States is no longer a majority white Christian country. White Christians are a shrinking demographic and that has profound social and political implications. Dr. Robert Jones, founder and CEO of the Public Opinion Research Institute, will examine the effect of this population shift on the United States and what it means for the future – politically, socially, and culturally.
– APRIL 4 –The U.S. Role in the World:
Domestic Debates and International ContextDr. Kathleen Hicks will explore links between the domestic and international contexts for U.S. foreign policy. She will address America’s internal debates over U.S. leadership in the world and present propositions on where we might rebuild Americans’ security consensus.
