FROM THE RABBI’S STUDY

The book is quite small. The pages are 14.5 cm by 7 cm. The measurement across the spine is 4 cm. The book was published in Amsterdam in 1817. Amsterdam was a center of Hebrew printing. The publisher was Joachim van Embden. The van Embdens were a family of printers in Amsterdam. Arleane had discovered what is often called a Shul Bible, comparable to the books we use at Temple Beth Israel to follow the Torah and Haftarah readings. We find the entire Five Books of Moses, all the Haftarah readings, the Five Scrolls read on special festivals (we are most familiar with Esther on Purim) and detailed charts outlining reading for special occasions during the year. In addition, what would be automatically expected, we find Rashi’s 11th century commentary. Through the ages, Jews did not read the text of the Torah without a commentary. I make the commitment to go through this volume carefully as I look for anything out of the ordinary. I will share with you anything I discover. Older Jewish books are special for more reasons than I can begin to list. I can pick up Arleane’s little book and easily find and read what we will read next Shabbat at our service. The continuity in Jewish synagogue practice, even from a Reform Jewish perspective, still inspires me. Old Jewish books are special because so many were destroyed. The particular edition we have in front of us may be one of many surviving copies, and, on the other hand, it may be extremely rare. I will try to find out. In addition to the willful destruction of Jewish books, especially in the last century, it doesn’t take too much imagination that think of what would have happened to the book in front of me if Arleane had not rescued it. We thank her for rescuing it. We thank her for sharing it with us. May all of us protect and preserve the physical objects that are part of our Jewish heritage. May we also be inspired by the spiritual values they represent.

Rabbi Stephen L. Sniderman

Let me tell you about a new donation to the Temple from Arleane Stier in memory of her husband, the late Hon. Carl Stier. Some decades ago when the Stiers were in Europe, they discovered an old Hebrew book in a flea market. Arleane insisted on buying it, and since it was in bad shape, she had it rebound.

FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S DESK

I join the Temple leadership and staff in welcoming back many of our northern friends to TBI. Of particular interest are the many new members we met at our New Members’ Dinner on November second. The event was well attended with 93 participants, our new members mingled with their new friends and without exception, praised our congregation and its family as being friendly and welcoming. The dinner was followed by an engaging and spiritual Erev Shabbat service led by Rabbi Sniderman who gave an inspirational sermon memorializing the eleven souls that were brutally taken away from us in Pittsburg. More than 150 were present, with the participation of some non-Jewish supporters. Our choir delivered an outstanding musical contribution to the family atmosphere.

On November 4th Gabriel Mirman was called to the Torah surrounded by family and friends. Gabe conducted the Bar Mitzvah service with aplomb and read expertly from the Torah and from his Haftarah portion. A lavish Kiddush followed the service, engaging family and friends in a joyful gathering.

This upcoming season, our educational and cultural offerings are numerous and stimulating. With more than one hundred programs, events, dinners and shows on our schedule you are sure to keep busy among friends. Miniversity and 92Y programs are free for TBI members, so please come and invite your friends to join you. If they are not yet members of TBI, they will get a taste of our excellent programing. This year we have added a slate of pre-recorded programs by SILL. Please refer to our ads for all the various activities we offer.

In 2019 Temple Beth Israel will celebrate its 40th Anniversary. Our Anniversary Celebration will take place on February 17, 2019 at Michaels On East. The Gala Committee is working hard to secure sponsorships. This is our single most important fund-raising event of the year and with your support we intend to break all fundraising records to date. Please call me to discuss your sponsorship opportunities and how you can make a positive impact.

Preparations are being made for our Scholar in Residence weekend. This year we are proud to announce that Dr. Gary P. Zola will present on January 18th to the 20th. Please refer to your current Bulletin, the frequent eBlasts and our Temple website for details. This event will be open to the entire community at no charge, so this is our chance to invite our friends to partake in a memorable scholarly presentation

The increased volume of programs we offer creates a need for volunteers to administer the logistics. You can help by serving as greeters the day of the events and as registrars by collecting admission fees and verifying reservations, and collecting email addresses and information about guests and visitors. This may seem like a trivial exercise but it is a way to make sure we gather the information necessary to communicate with potential members. By volunteering you would perform a very important service to your Temple. Please call me and I would be happy to discuss your involvement and provide you with more details.

A Way to Remember, Honor or Appreciate...

At the October TBI Board meeting the following proposal submitted by the new TBI Development Committee and recommended by the TBI Executive Committee was approved:

“The Temple Beth Israel Board establish a fund raising program of named seats in the TBI Sanctuary, via a small plaque with the honoree’s or member’s name to be placed on the top back of the seat, at a cost of $500 per seat plaque and with the clear understanding that such seats are not reserved for the honoree or member and may be used by anyone attending a service or event in the Sanctuary. Further it is understood that seats may be selected by the donor, but only on a first come-first served basis and no other criteria.”

The stimulus for this proposal emanated from a request by family members of Bob Berns(z”l), who asked if some of the funds contributed to TBI in his memory could purchase a plaque for the seat in the sanctuary that was his favorite. What a wonderful idea! By placing a plaque on the seat (which anyone can use) his family, friends and Temple members will remember him each time they see the plaque.

Thus, through this proposal we now have an opportunity do the same for those we wish to honor or remember. For a $500 contribution to the Facilities Fund (a much needed cause in our Temple), a brass plaque will be placed at the top back of a seat of your choosing (on a first come first served basis). The plaque will be inscribed with the name of your choice. You may purchase a plaque for yourself, to recognize the service of or honor another individual, or to remember a loved one. I am purchasing one in my beloved husband’s name (Dr. Martin Packard) both to honor his lifelong passion

for Judaism and because his aunt and uncle, Ann and Louis Bunis (z”l), were founding members of TBI.

It is important to understand that a plaque on a seat does not reserve that seat for the purchaser of the plaque or anyone else. All seats within the sanctuary will remain open for seating unless, as in the case of the two seats reserved for Rabbi Emeritus Michael Eisenstat and Nancy Eisenstat, the seats have placard on them saying “Reserved”.

Through the Bulletin, e-blasts, and at the end of each service, you hear messages about the need to repair and refurbish our 39 year old building. This new program is a wonderful way to help towards this goal and at the same time say “I support TBI”, “thank you for your service”, “I love you” or “In loving memory”. With the exception of the minor cost for purchasing and engraving the plaque, all the funds donated for a plaque will go to the Facilities Fund and you will receive a letter telling you the amount for tax deduction purposes. You may purchase as many seat plaques as you wish until they are all sold.

To donate and select a seat for your plaque, you may see either Isaac Azerad or Sandy Packard, or you may contact the office and Jen will alert Isaac or Sandy to contact you.

BIW HAPPENINGS

Our women’s group, as usual, has a bunch of fabulous events coming up. Mark your calendars in permanent ink!

First, on December 4 we are sponsoring our “Roll and Bake” happening. What rolls? Nothing. But you roll out the dough and decorate the cookies you’ll be making. Bring your own delicious dough and cookie cutters if you have some, and prepare to have fun. A Jewish Santa Claus cookie? I’ve never seen one, but dreidels are great. This gathering has been a big hit in the past, of course, our expert cook and baker, Sylvia Pastor, will be there to guide you should you have trouble shaping a cookie into a right and proper menorah.

We are also inviting you to a BIW Paid-Up Membership Luncheon. Sit and shmooze with friends after you eat. Cost? ZERO! Date: December 17. The ‘paid up’ part is the membership fee for belonging to our wonderful group. It’s only $40.00 for the year. A total bargain.

But before that at 5:30 p.m. on December 7 the BIW will host the TBI Chanukah Dinner. (Yes, Pearl Harbor Day in case it sounded familiar). The Sarasota Jewish Chorale will be singing for your pleasure and dinner will follow at approximately 6:00 p.m., followed by services at 7:15 p.m. The pricing for this event is as follows: Children 12 and under: $20; Members: $30; Non-members $35. Great prices for entertainment and food!

Bring a menorah to light at the Temple so we can admire all of them shining together. Reminder: The paper tablecloth under them, not the best idea. And then, just so you don’t plan to take the yacht out that day, our incredible Fashion Show takes place on February 4 at Michael’s on East.

Hoping to join all of you soon, it’s cold up here!

Judy Goldstein, Co-President, BIW

~ CALLING ALL SINGERS ~ Temple Beth Israel is inviting you to join and sing with our Temple Choir. We sing

weekly and have rehearsals generally every other week.

No prior experience necessary, only a love of singing. The Temple choir sings every Friday night for the 7:15 p.m. Erev Shabbat Service. We rehearse at 6:30 p.m. in the

Choir room. It’s fun, it’s good for your spirit and it’s uplifting for us and for the Temple service.

If you are interested in joining the TBI Choir, please contact Dr. Ann Stephenson Moe, Choir Director: [email protected]

MEN’S CLUB

The season’s activities for the Men’s Club have now begun. On November 11 we were pleased to have Erik Vatter, Merrill Lynch Marketing Executive, as our speaker. He gave an interesting presentation on the current local, national and global economic outlooks and how they might affect the market. As usual, a lox and bagel brunch was served. The program was well attended with over 30 attendees.

On December 16 will be our second Men’s Club Brunch and we are pleased to announce that we will have our own Bob Gary as our speaker. Bob will update us on the Bob Mueller investigation. Last year’s presentation was so well received that we are pleased he will continue sharing his thoughts and knowledge on what has occurred since his talk last December. Bob has extensive foresight in these matters having served as a federal prosecutor. The cost will be $12 per person. Please call the Temple for reservations so I can know how much food to buy.

On January 13 we are having a Dinner & Klezmer Concert that will feature a wonderfullyprepared meal by Chef Mike from Brooklyn Catering. Dinner will feature Jewish Deli delights. This will be followed by a Klezmer concert by Klezmania on the Gulf. They werefeatured last year and did such a great job that we had to have them back. Attendees were literally dancing in the aisles. This event will start at 6:00 p.m. The cost will be $50 per person. Reservations are required and may be made by calling the Temple. After the evening is over you will recognize what a bargain this has been.

On February 10 we will feature Brian MacNeal, Sarasota Crime Stopper from the Florida Crime Prevention Task Force, at the third Men’s Club Brunch. Brian spoke before a TBI Shabbat Dinner earlier this year on identity theft and safety practices we all should be doing. Brian thrilled his audience and had much more to share when time ran out. We will not give him a time limit so he can share information on the areas he was not able to get to at his previous visit. The breakfast will start at 9:30 a.m. and the cost is $12. Please call the Temple office to make reservations so I can know how much food to buy.

On February 25 Monday evening, we will be featuring the ever popular West Coast BlackTheatre Troupe. This group has been performing for TBI for many years and they continue to draw large crowds who rave year after year about their spectacular performance.

On March 27, the Men’s Club along with BWI will co-present the 3rd Annual Florence Katz Memorial Choir Concert. All net proceeds from this concert will go into the Choir Fund to help fund the cost of our beautiful choir each year. Ticket cost information will be in a future Bulletin.

On April 7, the Men’s Club will host a repeat of a new activity that was so successful last year, a Dinner Cruise on Marina Jack’s Yacht .Tickets will be $75 per person for TBI members and $85 for non- members. Reservations and ticket purchase may be made in the TBI office.

ADMIN REPORT

The September issue of the TBI Bulletin listed the Administration’s summer months’ activities and expenditures. As we come to the end of 2018, we look forward to continuing our improvements and maintaining the refurbishing of our Temple.

To meet the requirements of our current membership and to attract new members, we will continue to improve our facility and physical environment. During 2018, we have spent close to $100,000 on routine and preventative maintenance for our 39-year-old Temple. Budgetary constraints prevented further expenditures for our remaining much-needed improvements. We have over 30 additional projects necessary to maintain the high standards we have set forth for TBI in 2019. The projected cost for these improvements will be approximately $150,000. Along with many other Temples, we are unable to finance all of our important projects. We need your continued support to maintain and improve our Temple.

To obtain the additional funds needed for our building and grounds projects, we are encouraging congregants to donate to the TBI Facilities Fund. When you donate you may, if you choose, sponsor a specific project. Sponsors will be acknowledged in the Bulletin. The following are some of the projects needing sponsorship: 1. Exterior security cameras & monitors.

2. Safe Room (for individual & group protection)

3. Repairing the ceiling of the Sanctuary and repainting of the entire Sanctuary along with cleaning out the ceiling ventilation louvers and ducts.

4. New lighting fixtures in the Social Hall, with low-energy bulbs, along with new ceiling tiles, and with an improved audio

system with good acoustics from the front to the rear of our Social Hall.

5. Complete phase #3 of replacing the expansion strips between our sidewalks and repairing or replacing the broken sidewalks.

6. Complete the new panel for additional yahrzeit plaques.

7. Setting up an emergency remote control system, for locking the doors to the Sanctuary, our rear door entrance, as well as the (2) front entrance doors into the foyer area, and the doors to the Social Hall.

8. Installing Hi Impact Security 3M Film on all window areas of our Sanctuary, Social Hall, Library, Gift Shop, Choir Room and offices to prevent breakage from storms or burglary, and help to ensure the safety of our premises.

We are in the process of obtaining quotes for all the above projects. The eight projects only represent 27 percent of the total projects we need to implement at our Temple. Top priority is being given to improving the safety and comfort level of our members, friends and guests of TBI.

Please consider sponsoring one of these eight important projects. To learn more about the costs or plans for any of the projects listed here, please call Allan Goldfarb, V.P. of Administration, at (941-383-3428). I would be happy to meet, and discuss with you, these eight important projects, along with any of the other projects, that are planned for our Temple.

I thank you in advance for wanting to make a significant and positive impact on Temple Beth Israel.

The season has begun and our northern friends are returning. These past weeks have been busy at TBI. We were treated to memorable films: Nana and Kabbalah Me. We attended a Newcomer’s Dinner to honor and welcome the several new members to our Temple. The food was delicious and, most important, we made many new friends. The 92nd Street Y events have begun, featuring timely programs which expand our thoughts and horizons. The Miniversity lectures are also in full swing with notable speakers and thought-provoking topics. The Chanukah dinner, featuring the Sarasota Chorale is another example of the way Leadership Circle funds fortify and enhance the Temple Beth Israel experience.

We could not have presented these activities (and those to come, which offer a full range of educational, social and outreach programs) without the additional financial support of the Leadership Circle.

Plans are beginning for the February 1st Leadership Dinner which will pay tribute to our Leadership Circle donors and Life and Legacy donors. We hope to make it a special event for you, our generous contributors.

It is not too late to contribute but our Leadership plaques must be ordered very soon as the Temple budgeting process begins in December which examines our fiscal abilities in the planning of programs.

Thank you to all the early supporters listed below. Your financial donation shows your heartfelt commitment to TBI.

LIFE & LEGACY PROGRAM

As we enter the second year of our Life and Legacy Program, it is very satisfying to note that 22 members of the congregation have joined the program by submitting Letters of Intent. It is important for those who have made their commitment to move forward with the next step in fulfilling that commitment. Several options are available. These include adding a provision in a will for a bequest, naming the Temple as a beneficiary in a life insurance policy, transferring funds from an IRA account or even by making a direct contribution to our Endowment Fund. We strongly recommend a consultation with your attorney or financial adviser to determine the method that best suits your situation. For additional information or assistance, please contact our Executive Director Isaac Azerad.

MEMBERSHIP REPORT

Membership is growing as Jews in our area feel the need to join and support the only place for Jewish living and learning on Longboat Key. All the many new programs are attracting new members. We are so delighted. We currently have 21 new member units since June, 2018. Our committee will have presence at many of these activities to speak about TBI and hopefully bring interest in joining.

There will be a Wine and Cheese Party on Wednesday, December 19 at the Club Longboat Beach and Tennis Club House 4:30 – 6:00p.m. We will be sending personal invitations, so if you know of people that might be interested please tell us and bring them. It is inherent for all of us to be advocates for TBI. Please help!

BEYOND THE BIMAH: Steven Bush & Sherry Klein

Steven and Sherry both have played integral roles in their respective synagogues back home in Georgia. In fact, both have family ties going back three generations in the Temples in which they grew up. Each feels a profound pride and connection to their Judaism, so when they knew that they would be spending more time here in their home on Longboat Key, they were naturally inclined to seek out and engage with TBI.

But there was also another reason at play for joining Temple Beth Israel - a most special one – as they needed a Rabbi to marry them! Fortunate for us they had their close friend, Bob Blumberg, bring them to TBI personally to meet Rabbi Sniderman. Now we are proud to welcome Steven and Sherry as our soon-to-be-newlyweds members!

“Matchmaker, Matchmaker Show Me a Match!”

Both Sherry and Steven had been living on their own for many years. Although they are both from Georgia, they spent most of their lives in two different cities, Atlanta and Athens. Through a fantastic series of unexpected coincidences, they not only met, but learned their lives have actually been long intertwined. We’ll start with how TBI members Theresa and Bob Blumberg played the matchmakers during one fateful game of mahjong here in Sarasota.

Last year Sherry, who had moved to Sarasota to be close to cousins a couple years earlier, was eager to engage in an activity outside of her work. She decided to try out a public mahjong gathering at the Elks Club in Sarasota. When the game is played in this context, there is very little room for conversation as players shift tables often and talk is kept to a minimum, but on this particular afternoon she sat next to a lovely lady, Theresa Blumberg, for the last set. “You have a southern accent,” said Theresa, “Where are you from?” Sherry engaged in the conversation and then a short while later Bob came to pick up his wife. As he chatted with Sherry he asked, “Are you married, or have a boyfriend?” Sherry indicated she did not and he pressed on, “I have a friend in Athens, he’s going to call you tonight.”

Members’ Personal Stories in Choosing TBI

“For me the essence of Judaism is community.” Sherry Klein

“It’s my obligation as a Jew to support Judaism by joining synagogue.”

DEC 2018

BEYOND THE BIMAH: Steven Bush & Sherry Klein

The next morning Bob called Sherry and asked “Did he call?” He had not yet called so Bob promised, “He’ll call tonight.” And so he did. In their first conversation, Steven learned Sherry was from Atlanta and asked what Temple she belonged to. When he heard it was Or Veshalom, he shared that Rabbi Robert Ichay, who had served as the Rabbi there for 33 years, had conducted Steven’s first wedding.

“Oh my God, I’ve heard of you!” Sherry responded. “Everyone knows the story of your beloved late wife.” As the story unfolds, Steven learns that his late wife, Carol, was a close friend to Sherry’s family. Carol was the chair of the religious school and president of the sisterhood in Sherry’s synagogue in Atlanta. In fact, many in Sherry’s family were in attendance when Carol married Steven in 1990. Tragically, Carol and Steven were only married for 35 months before he lost her to breast cancer at the age of 45.

This intersection of their lives was remarkable, but so were the circumstances around their meeting. In 1942 Steven’s dad, Alexander Bush, was introduced to his future wife Marian by a friend named Harry Loef. Now, 70 years later, Harry’s daughter and son-in-law, Theresa & Bob Blumberg, similarly played matchmaker to Sherry and Steven.

After the initial phone call, Steven and Sherry’s courtship started when they had dinner in Atlanta last fall. Two months later, he called her when he came to Sarasota. Their date included dinner with the Blumbergs, and then extended to a walk on the beach. After this walk, it was clear to both of them that this could lead to much more. On June 22nd, Steven proposed to Sherry from a mountaintop near Interlaken, Switzerland. She of course said YES!

“My favorite thing is to be in the kitchen, I’m looking forward to cooking with Sylvia,” said Sherry Klein. While Sherry lived in Atlanta she had her own boutique kosher catering business. Much of her catering business was focused on weddings, and largely connected to her affiliation with Or VeShalom, a Sephardic Congregation in Atlanta for which her grandfather had a been a founder. Her talents and enthusiasm for cooking will be well embraced here at TBI!

Steven along with the entire Bush family just celebrated their 100th year of membership in Congregation Children of Israel in Athens, Georgia. This is the same Temple where TBI’s former Rabbi, Sanford Saperstein (z”l), had his first pulpit. Coincidentally, the current Rabbi Emeritus, Ronald Gerson, was also a classmate of Rabbi Sniderman at Hebrew Union College. Steven was a four time past president of this congregation, and also built the Carol Bush Education Center for the Temple in honor of his late wife.

We are delighted to share our excitement and best wishes for Steven and Sherry’s union on Dec 8, 2018 as they marry on the beach at the Water Club. Mazel Tov from the whole congregation of TBI!!

The weekend of March 15th-16th will provide all of us in the Sarasota-Manatee Jewish Community, especially those of us in the Temple Beth Israel family, the opportunity to sit together and engage in study and conversation with one of the Reform Movement’s outstanding leaders, Rabbi Eric Yoffie, President Emeritus of the Union for Reform Judaism (URJ). Installed as URJ President in June 1996, Rabbi Yoffie led the Reform Movement in exciting new directions, moving congregational life toward greater attention to Torah study and adult literacy. He spear-headed a major expansion of the URJ’s summer camping program. In 2005 he introduced the Sacred

Choices curriculum to teach sexual ethics to teens in camps and congregations. Rabbi Eric Yoffie is also an expert on Modern Israel, and has written widely on issues of peace and security in Israel and on the relations between Israel and America and between Israel and American Jews. He has been a major force in formulating American Jewish attitudes on issues of religious freedom and was instrumental in the founding of the Israel Religious Action Center, which is the primary advocacy group for religiouspluralism in the Jewish State. For 30 years he has met regularly with Israel’s top leadersand, today, he continues to address the important religious and ethical issues that all too often divide our two Jewish communities. Rabbi Yoffie has appeared on CNN, Fox News, and many other media outlets, and has presented at the World Economic Forum in Davos. He writes a regular opinion column for the Israeli daily Haaretz. Rabbi Yoffie and his wife Amy have two married chil-dren and one grandchild. Their daughter Adina is an editor and writer and their son Adam prosecutes healthcare fraud for the Justice Department.

intelligence community and armed services to defend against those who would do it harm. And in Rise and Kill First: The Secret History of Israel’s Targeted Assassi-nations, veteran journalist Ronen Bergman — “arguably Israel’s best inves-tigative reporter,” in the words of David Remnick — pulls back the curtain on the country’s most effective secret weapon. Hear gripping accounts of the dangerous missions undertaken by the Mossad, Shin Bet and the IDF to root out Israel’s enemies before they could attack the Jewish state. And explore the thorny ethical questions that Israeli forces have grappled with as they protected their homeland.

mann), and Oscar-nominated director Chris Weitz for a conversation with FOLCS/NYU Law School’s Thane Rosenbaum. Thursday December 20th, 2018 – 7:30 p.m. David Sanger with Nicholas Kristof: War, Sabotage and Fear in the Cyber AgeThe Russian attacks on the

American election are merely the culmination of the remarkable first era of cyberwar. Cyberweapons have reordered the way we conduct diplomacy and war, and though the US struck first in Iran with the cyber operation Olympic Games, it has since found itself backpedaling in the face of attacks from Russia, China, and North Korea that left it unsure of how to respond.

In his urgent new book, The Perfect Weapon, leading New York Times national security correspondent David Sanger takes us in-side this escalating conflict and shows how digital weapons inspire fear in their ability to both melt nuclear reactors and undermine democracies.

GLOBAL ISSUES SERIES IIIThursdays, 10:30 am

LONGBOAT KEY PROGRAMTemple Beth Israel

– JANUARY 17 –Reflections on U.S. Policy in Post-Soviet Russia

and Eastern EuropeThe end of the Soviet Union was the greatest strategic shift in the last fifty years. Reflecting on his work as a U. S. policymaker and representative in Russia and Eastern Europe over four decades, Amb. John Tefft will offer his thoughts on U.S. policy and the way ahead for the United States in this region which is critical for U.S. national security interest.

– JANUARY 24 –Russian Covert Intervention in the 2016 U.S. Electionand the Role of Intelligence in American Democracy

Dr. James Bruce will unpack the key controversies surrounding the election of the 45th U.S. President. How successful were Russian efforts to influence the outcome of that election? How should U.S. intelligence and law enforcement, vital to American democracy, and accustomed to attacks by Russia, counter Russian intervention when they are also under attack from the U.S. President himself?

– JANUARY 31 –Eurasia’s Strategic Realignment:

The Challenge to U.S. PredominanceThe dominant feature of Eurasia’s emerging security landscape is rapid strategic realignment among virtually all actors on which the United States depends. S. Enders Wimbush will discuss what this emerging security landscape looks like. What are the key actor’s objectives and strategies, and what challenges does the U.S. face to defend America’s interests in this dynamic geostrategic environment?

– FEBRUARY 7 –The German ProblemBrexit leaves Europe unbalanced, with Germany as the biggest and richest nation, and France a poor second. The Germans have learned – painfully and profoundly – to duck responsibility, but it is being thrust upon them. Martin Walker explores how Europe will cope, without widening its north-south divide.

– FEBRUARY 14 –The Impossible Presidency

Dr. Jeremi Suri notes the American presidency changed from the limited role envisaged by the Founding Fathers to the most powerful job in the world. In recent years the presidency became a victim of its own success. Now it is almost impossible to fulfill the expectations placed upon it.

– FEBRUARY 28 –The Future of War

The future of war is not what most think. The 21st century is maturing into a world mired in perpetual conflict. The weak defeat the strong, and battlefield victory achieves little. Forget what you know about war – it’s obsolete. Dr. Sean McFate will explain the new rules of war, andhow to win.

– MARCH 7 –

– FEBRUARY 21 –The Divided Kingdom of Britain

Britain is going through an identity crisis. With Brexit, Britain will detach from Europe and focus on internal affairs. Alternatively, the marriage of Prince Harry to a divorced, mixed race American has generated enthusiasm, with citizens embracing a more multi-cultural, multinational life. Baroness Margaret Jay will discuss what happens when normal conventions have been shattered. What does this imply for the future?

Tensions in the Ukraine and Why It MattersSeveral years ago Russia-backed forces and Ukrainian nationalists came face to face. Today Ukraine is increasingly at the intersection of Russian, American, European and even Chinese interests. Foreign correspondent Nolan Peterson, the first U.S. journalist to be embedded with the Ukrainian army, will discuss the current situation and why it matters to the United States. Mr. Peterson will explain why the U.S. needs to strengthen its diplomatic presence in the Ukraine or risk losing influence to its adversaries in Eastern Europe.

– MARCH 14 –India: Rise on the World Stage

Dr. Alyssa Ayres will look at India’s emergence into the global economy and world stage. After decades of looking inward, India’s leaders want the country to be featured in the ranks of the world’s great powers. India’s vastness, history, and diversity render it incomparable to any other democratic power.

– MARCH 21 –Understanding World Leaders

What do we know about the backgrounds, experiences, world views, leadership styles, and policymaking predispositions of current world leaders of people like Vladimir Putin, Xi Jinping, Kim Jong-un, Angela Merkel, Bashar al-Assad, Emmanuel Macron, and Aung San Suu Kyi? Dr. Margaret Hermann takes us on a tour to learn more about current world leaders.

– MARCH 28 –The End of White Christian America

The United States is no longer a majority white Christian country. White Christians are a shrinking demographic and that has profound social and political implications. Dr. Robert Jones, founder and CEO of the Public Opinion Research Institute, will examine the effect of this population shift on the United States and what it means for the future – politically, socially, and culturally.

– APRIL 4 –The U.S. Role in the World:

Domestic Debates and International ContextDr. Kathleen Hicks will explore links between the domestic and international contexts for U.S. foreign policy. She will address America’s internal debates over U.S. leadership in the world and present propositions on where we might rebuild Americans’ security consensus.
