Hello All
Well, the Wedding was lovely, wasn’t it? A beautiful
bride and handsome prince for her groom - it was like
a Disney film!
I need your help in tracking down a lady called Moira
Mason. She kindly rang me about a photo she has of
the gentleman in last month’s article about Temple
Ewell in Wartime. I was meant to ring her back, but I
must have taken her number down incorrectly
because when I tried it was not recognised. I would like to hear from Mrs Mason
again and apologise to her.
There’s plenty going on this month in the village. The School Fete is at the end of
the month and that’s always a very good and well attended event. Earlier on in the
month is the W.I. Exhibition of Arts and Crafts in the Village Hall, which I’m sure will
be very interesting, and of course there’s the Templeside residents’ celebration of
50 years residency in the village. It’s not that surprising that so many who moved
into Templeside when the houses were built are still there, as it’s such a lovely
village to live in. Even many who have moved out of Templeside have stayed in
Temple Ewell. Hope you all have a great celebration!
The 100 Club draw, being organised by Alison, see page 7, is a brave new venture
aiming to raise funds to help maintain the fabric of the church. It is hoped that even
non-church goers will want to contribute towards preserving this historic village
building for generations to come.

A quiet month for us, although we looked forward to our pre-
wedding party (Royal Wedding that is) on 18th May in the Village
Hall. We decorated the hall in bunting and flags to make it look
Royal and members wore their hats and tiaras.
We had a nice Strawberry Tea and continued the afternoon with a good old sing-a-
long with guest singers John and Peggy, my Pearly King and Queen friends.
I kept their visit as a surprise for our members so as not to spoil the fun.
Hoping you all enjoyed watching the wedding on TV and had fun if you
held celebrations of your own. I know we did.
Until next time

What is going to become of our Church, and who will be able to replace Father
Paul? These are frequent questions asked around our village.
Well, we are not sitting around doing nothing. As a PCC we are meeting with
Lydden and seriously considering the way forward. Having been present
at a wedding on the 12th May, it was an amazing how we are now on the
map and people realise that the Parish Church is active and needed in our
community.
We do qualify for a part time priest which may happen in the not so distant future.
In the meantime we have been praised for the warm welcome received by visitors
and newcomers alike.
You may not have heard our bell ringing that is because of a problem which we are
investigating.
Our new Archdeacon Darren Miller is coming to preach to us on 24th and a good
congregation would be most welcome.
Many thanks for your continued support.

Baptismal Tea
This is an invitation to any parents or godparents whose children have
been baptised in St Peter & St Paul Temple Ewell to renew their vows and join us
for tea on June 10th at 3pm.
Children will of course be most welcome – it would be lovely to see how they have
grown! Invitations will be sent to all we have addresses for and who were
baptised on the last 3 years but we would love to welcome all others who have
celebrated at our church.
Just let us know if you would like to attend for catering purposes. We would not
like to run out of cakes!!

Our coach trip to Penshurst Place, on a beautiful sunny
Saturday 5th of May, was enjoyed by everyone. There were
150 craft stalls, house and gardens to explore. Many thanks to Carol and Daphne
for organizing it for the club.
Our next event will be the Summer Show on the 14th July.
We hope all is going well in your garden or allotment. I am growing some chrysan-
themums for something different as well as my dahlias.

At our May meeting we discussed the Resolution, concerning mental
health issues, which will be put forward at our AGM in Cardiff in June.
Our aim is to lobby the government for better support for mental illness.
Jill, one of our members, gave us a humerous and informative talk about her
holiday to Morocco with her mother. Their adventures started as soon as they got
off the plane. Before they were taken to their hotel their taxi driver took them to
visit a souk. During their stay they were taken by camel to the Atlas Mountains and
spent some time with a nomadic tribe. They were also introduced to a Moroccan
family who invited them to stay the night. They appreciated their hospitality and
enjoyed an evening of fun, laughter and dancing - definitely a holiday to remember.
Our next meeting will be on June 14th when we will be playing short mat bowls.
Just a reminder about our arts and craft exhibition on 16th June 12-4pm.

We hope many of you supported last month’s play ‘Curtain Up!’. A the
time of going to press ticket sales were not great, hampered we think by
both a football Cup Final and a Royal Wedding on the same day as our last per-
formance! We’re sure that those who did attend enjoyed the hilarious comedy and
appreciated the huge amount of work put in by our Director Cindy, the cast and crew.
Our next show is ‘Oliver’, the well known musical, which naturally will feature our
Junior Players. This is a full scale show however, so we also need adults for at
least ten main roles such as Nancy, Fagin etc, and adult chorus.
There is a meeting about the show in the Village Hall on Thursday 31st May at 7pm
with auditions on 5th and 7th June, same time and place. Jon Regan will be
directing and Sally Parker is looking after the music. Come along to find out more
and ’consider yourselves at home!’ Mike Brodie

DDC AGM Report 2018
(Summarised for editorial reasons)
It has been another productive and extremely busy year
serving and representing the Ward of Lydden and Temple
Ewell as your elected Councillor. I must highlight a
special thank you to all residents for working and feeding
back directly to me, to help raise issues important to you all in both Parishes.
The last annual period has seen an increase in my general DDC duties and solid
good interaction with residents over many issues including broadband speed,
speeding traffic, potholes, resident social issues, verges, road signs, street light-
ing, anti-social behaviour, property boundaries and various planning applications,
as well as the usual ongoing fight to keep the village free from disrespectful foreign
HGV EU drivers whom still seem to be entirely ignorant of any UK traffic laws, road
skills or road signage!
Acting on residents’ information, several illegally fly parked HGV trucks have been
moved in the ward, although no EU HGV enforcement has been actioned to clamp
or fine illegal activity. However, I am very happy to report the area at the top of
Lydden hill (opposite Husks) is now a restored wildlife space, with more wildflower
seeds sown this year, successfully ceasing endless illegal HGV obstructions after
having organised the top soil to be placed there via KCC Highways. During the
year the wider area was also deep cleaned by DDC services, after my intervention,
to remove the final dumped littering of chemicals, car parts and alcohol and food
waste products.
I am delighted to see the road, which had been reported as terrible condition
between Temple Ewell London Road and Watersend Farm, has finally been
repaired.
In one two month period this year DDC saw our busy timetable go into overdrive
when previous long term leader Cllr Paul Watkins suddenly resigned and stood
down to make way for a new leader, Cllr Keith Morris.
The Government Electoral Boundary Commission declared its intention to reduce,
change and review Dover & Deal Ward boundaries in line with many other areas.
Dover is a very exciting place right now with more locally managed DDC inward
investment than anywhere else in East Kent and local house prices are souring as
a result.
17
We also saw St. James retail regeneration space start to open to the public with a
fantastic six screen cinema and various restaurants and shops. Dover is now
seeing the benefits of the development, the car park is full most days and it is still
not completely open. As for concerns regarding the Old high street shopping
areas of Dover being negatively impacted, we have seen a recent rise in footfall
from 60K per week to 110K people per week since St. James opened! This mat-
ter is still being monitored as part of the widening focus on Dover under our newly
elected DDC Leader.
May I personally put on record my thanks to the various departments at DDC and
Kent Highways for resolving a number of local issues over this last year.
Also special thanks to all those residents who have worked with me to help raise
issues important to both parishes.
I support direct contact with all residents over any DDC issues of concern and I will
engage and help protect the overall wider wellbeing of the villages, with
a particularly strong focus on planning applications or environmental issues that
do not benefit the village or surrounding areas.
Huge thanks to the both the Temple Ewell & Lydden Parish Councils for their
ongoing support during the last 12 months and apologies for not making so many
parish meetings this year, but DDC meetings elsewhere have been busy voting in
so many changes for DDC.
I hope to attend a few more parish meetings next year, however below are my full
24/7 contact details should anything ever need my urgent attention for any Parish
Council or resident issues.
Best wishes

MERCI MERCY
This month we will look at the meaning of the word mercy.
What is mercy? There are several Hebrew words that are associated with God's
mercy:
Racham – means "to love," "to have compassion," or "to show mercy." Chesed –
means "goodness," "kindness," "mercifulness," or "loving-kindness."
Kapporeth – means "ransom," "propitiatory," or "the mercy seat."
These Greek words are associated with mercy in the New Testament:
Eleemon – means "to show mercy," "to pity," "to have compassion," or "to be mer-
ciful." Oiktirmos – carries the concept of "compassion" or "pity.
We say mercifully something bad didn’t happen, so in that sense we are being
thankful of a good outcome.
William Cowper sums God’s love and mercy for us in his writing:
God moves in a mysterious way
His wonders to perform
He plants His footsteps in the sea
and rides upon the storm.
Ye fearful saints fresh courage take,
the clouds ye so much dread,
are big with mercy and shall break
in blessings on your head.
Our activities continue as usual:

Hedgehog Week
'Hedgehog Week’ in early May highlighted for us all the need to be 'Hedgehoggy'
aware. These spiky garden mammals are protected in England under the Wildlife
and Countryside Act, 1981. The British Hedgehog Preservation Society,
britishhedgehogs.org.uk founded in 1982, offers a plethora of advice and tips on
how to care and/or attract hedgehogs to your
garden. There has been a significant 75%
decline in their population and their extinction is
becoming a reality. Living in the lovely country-
side as we do we may be privileged to have the
Hedgehog as a regular visitor, devouring those
pesky slugs. So let's support their protection by
being aware of such hazards as:-
Open drains, slug pellets and pesticides, lawn mowers, stringers, netting
and bonfires.
I also recommend 'The Last Hedgehog' by Pam Ayres who gives us in poetry
exactly what we can do to keep them alive and see them thrive once more. Let
us all ensure that 'Mrs Tiggywinkle' is just not just alive in books but visible and
fascinating for our grandchildren!

KCC launches campaign to help children cross safely
Three in four crashes involving children on Kent’s roads are because of
youngsters not looking properly or paying attention before they cross.
Child pedestrians are consistently shown to be at their most vulnerable between the
ages of 11 and 16 as this is often when, with increasing independence, they begin their
first solo pedestrian journeys on potentially unfamiliar routes. As a result, Kent County
Council’s road safety team has launched a new campaign to address the issues with
this age group.
KCC road safety team leader Vicky Harvey said: “These are simple messages – for
instance ensuring you look right first - but it’s clear that young pedestrians aren’t
properly considering the dangers when crossing the road. Modern technology is
also causing distractions as well as not understanding the dangers when playing near
roads and this campaign is a reminder of some of the simple strategies children
can use to cross the road more safely. We want to get this message across to as
many children who will be making their first trips to secondary school in September
without their parents or guardians and new schools might mean longer journeys.
To help us engage we’ll be visiting retail centres across Kent over the
summer holidays with videos and quizzes to help educate children in the
importance of pedestrian safety.”
The campaign, which includes adverts on buses, goes back to the 8-bit era of com-
puter games and utilises pixel art to get the message across. It also harkens back
to a time before children had mobile phones – a recent survey found 64%
of children used their phones whilst crossing over or near roads.
Visitors will be able to pick up a branded top-trump style game and keyring, further rein-
forcing the pedestrian safety messages. Collision data shows most incidents take place
at the start and end of the school day and boys are slightly higher in the statistics.
Top tips:
• look right first – look left, then look right again before crossing -
that’s where the first car to hit you would come from, but also
consider a speeding vehicle overtaking, so keep checking as you
cross the road.
• don’t mess about with friends near the road - concentrate for those
few vital seconds to make sure it’s the right time to cross.
• find a safer place to cross - could be a crossing or just away from
parked cars.
23
• remove distractions such as earphones - have your mind on the
road and what’s important is to cross safely, your ears and eyes
together will give you more information.
• do not use a mobile device while crossing the road -
concentrating on a conversation or a song means you are not
concentrating on what can do you most harm.

Easter HuntAt Brownies we had and Easter Hunt. We had to find pictures of PeterRabbit and his friends hidden around the Baptist garden. When we hadfound any of them we stuck them onto a sheet. So, we set off to findthem .... some were easy and some were not! When we had found all 12stickers we were given 12 small Easter eggs. Then we had to find onesmall egg each, hidden in the room, and later on a bigger Smartie egg.All in all it was very good fun and a tasty Brownie evening. Delphie
Candles and CarrotsWe practiced with a long match. We made sure we struck it away fromus and then we lit our candle. It was the first time for me lighting amatch. We then went and had a go at hammering nails into a carrot, potato and grapefruit and the we had to pull the nails out with pliers. It was very hard with the carrot and potato and took a long time to pullthem out. We then had to put a screw into them and unscrew them. The carrot and potato were difficult but the grapefruit was reallyeasy. It was great fun and I would like to do it again. Ashlea

Mrs. Jane Coulson-Wright, Temple Ewell Parish Council,
5 Dour Side, River, Dover, CT17 0UX [email protected]
The Parish Council is delighted to announce that Dominic Castle
has agreed to take over the role as Chairman for the allotments
this year, with the full support of the allotment committee.
Dominic moved to the village in 2001 and has held an allotment
for the last 6 years. A few years later he joined the Allotment
Committee and has become a valuable member of the group. He works in local
schools teaching sports and also invests a lot of his own personal time educating
and promoting healthy living to local primary schools.
Since 2013 over two thousand children have
visited the Temple Ewell allotments, learning
about the growing cyc le o f f ru i t and
vegetables and gaining the skills required to
prepare the soil, plant seedlings, maintain
the plants and harvest the crops. The
children have been so inspired by their visits
to the allotments that the classes at River
Primary School are now involved with
their own gardening projects in and around
their classrooms and have designed a recipe
book to raise funds for future projects. In
addition St Margaret’s Primary School have
now established a courtyard garden and
each class has a section of the courtyard.
The Parish Councillors, allotment committee and plot holders would like to pass on
their sincerest thanks to Peter Upton for all of his hard work and dedication as
Allotment Manager, he has been part of the group since the mid-90’s. His support,
knowledge and encouragement to old and new plot holders, has been invaluable.

Remembering the end of World War 1 in November 2018 -
Please can you help us?
Our November issue this year will be a special one to commemerate the end of
War 1, which happened 100 years ago with the surrender of Germany on 11th
November 1918.
We have two things planned that we would like your help with:
1. A special edition of the Newsletter with articles about the war and
those who were affected by it.
Please send in anything that you think will be of interest.
Articles can be emailed to me at [email protected] or posted
to me at 13 Chilton Way, River, Dover CT17 0QB.
If you have information of any sort, but do not wish to write an article your
self we are more than happy to visit you and take down details instead.
2. An exhibition of photos and memorabilia from the time of WW1 with
soup lunch - a chance to have a look and a chat about the exhibits
If you have any of these that you would be prepared to lend us (we promise
to take VERY good care of them) please let me know.
If you would like more information or assistance with either of the above
please ring me on 01304 826386 - Jeanette Potts (Editor)

Smiling – always smiling
A day in the life of a hospital Carer or Nurse
with a long day ahead of her.
That beautiful smile fixed on her face
to care and reassure.
All that she is expected to do and more,
taking pressure readings, filling the saline tubes,
fetching the bedpans and commodes, and then cleaning
them out.
Making that patient feel they are the only one on the Ward.
Closing the curtains, giving the patient a wash
unless they can do it on their own.
If they can, the girls get on with the stripping, changing and
remaking the beds.
Then sitting the patient up dependent on the state they’re in.
Smiling all the while.
Temperatures to take, medications to give out,
answers given to Consultants and all.
Helping to feed those in their care.
Smiling all the while.
This I experienced for ten days a few months ago, if you can recall.
Care and expertise, respect and humour all.
Patience and reassurance when I had the post-op blues,
smiling all the while.
……………..
Thank you, Kings Ward C1
