As my son starts school full-time this term, my mindnaturally turns back to my own first days of school. I hadn'tattended nursery or anything like that, so I can only imaginethat starting school must have been something of a shock tomy system. But I can't remember anything about it! I dohave an image in my mind of being in the school hall on myfirst day, but I'm not sure if that's a real memory or amanufactured one, created by the necessity of writing es-says on "My first day at school" sporadically for yearsafterwards! I have the dimmest recall of my classroom inthat reception year, and can recall my teacher's name (MrsKing), the fact that we did a lot of singing and memorisedall the words- and little else. But even if my memories ofthat year are almost entirely absent, what I did and learnedthat year must have had a very formative effect on me. I canonly assume that during that year my reading improved, mynumeracy started to develop, and so much besides. I havebeen shaped and formed by experiences even though Icannot consciously remember them.

I wonder how much this endures into adult life. Howoften do we not consciously remember, yet we are nonethe-less significantly shaped and formed by something? I thinkthat happens quite often. Ask me about a course I went ona year ago and probably I'd struggle to tell you the pro-gramme for the day or the details of what was said. Wasthat day therefore a waste of time? I hope not. I think that, while many details will have been forgotten, I will havelearned things on a deeper level, gained an understandingof what I learned which changed me and which does staywith me. Likewise, ask me about a sermon I heard from oneof my gifted colleagues a week ago, and I might struggle togive more than a couple of sentences' description of whatthey said. But nevertheless I think there is a valuable ongo-ing benefit. Insights were gained, resolve strengthened, mercy sought, prayers prompted.

What I do remember, even years later, is stories. Perhapseven in that first reception year at school I was first toldstories- fairy tales perhaps- that I can repeat even now. Idon't remember where and when I learned them, but thestories stay with me. I can tell you about the three pigs andthe big bad wolf, I can pass that story on to the nextgeneration, even though I don't know how I know it. It'seasier to remember a story, to repeat it, to think about itlater, than anything else. This is perhaps one of the reasonswhy Jesus so often taught in parables. They are easy toremember, easy for people to share with others, easy toreturn to again and again in our minds. Great stories canform and shape us, even transform us, without us necessar-ily being aware of it. But we also remember them. That iswhy they are such a good teaching tool. The Christian faithitself isn't a dry collection of abstract theological principles. At its heart is a story. Christianity is the story of God's love,Jesus' life and death and resurrection, and the redemptionof all humankind. It's a story we tell and retell week byweek in church, and a story that forms and shapes us in the

IN CHURCH IN OCTOBERHarvest Thanksgiving is on 1 October. We will again be collecting non-perishable pro-

duce for the Epsom and Ewell Foodbank, which gives 3 days' emergency supplies to peo-ple in crisis in our local area. Please bring your gifts to church at any of the services onSunday 1 October: 8am Holy Communion, 9:30am Sung Eucharist or 11am Praise@11all-age special service for Harvest Thanksgiving. You can see the Food Bank's latest ur-gent needs at https://epsomewell.foodbank.org.uk/give-help/donate-food/

On Saturday 7 October, you are invited to sing- or listen to- the Fauré Requiem, rehearsed and performed from scratch. All are welcome to come and hear the performance,£7 adults, £1 under 16s. All rehearsal for the scratch choir will be on the day, costing £10each: there are flyers in church with more details or see the church website or phoneJonathan Holmes on 078825041427. This is my own favourite setting of the requiem texts, and it should be a very good evening.

Services on Sunday 8 October are 8am and 9:30am as usual, Choral Mattins at 11:15am,and our all-age service for everyone, All-in, at 5pm. This is a very different service frommany of our others, it is very interactive with lots going on, and it's good to see our regularcongregation of about 40 at this service, all ages getting involved on different levels and indifferent ways. All-in is followed by Club Sandwich (sandwiches, discussion, and gamesfor 7-11s from 6-6:45pm.)

Then on 15 October, after 8am and 9:30am services we have Toddle Up! at 11am, andat 5:30pm Choral Evensong. You may have seen recent reports in the news that attendanceat Choral Evensong is booming in cathedrals across England. We offer Evensong (and itsmorning sister Mattins) each month at St Mary's, your very own cathedral services here inour parish. Both services are an opportunity for reflection and prayer while listening to theglories of the Anglican choral tradition- it is no wonder they are growing in popularity. OnTuesday 17 October our bereavement cafe is open, in the church hall 2:45- 3:45pm, for allthose who would like to talk about their experiences of bereavement in a relaxed, cafe-style environment.

On Sunday 22 October, there will be prayers for healing at our 8am and 9:30am services. Those who wish to will have the opportunity to come forward to receive anointing with oilblessed by the Bishop, or prayer with laying on of hands. A service of Morning Prayer withHoly Baptism follows at 11:15am. Sunday 29 October is half-term and services will be at8am and 9:30am only.

FIRST COMMUNION CLASSESFirst communion classes for children in our church aged 7+ will start in October,

meeting once a month on a Saturday late afternoon, for first Holy Communion in 2018.Children who take this path are then able to receive the sacrament of Confirmation at anolder age. Please speak to the Vicar ASAP if a member of your family might be interested.

lasting 90 minutes. This course will feature some short video and audio from the Churchof England's leading bishops and theologians, but is mostly discussion in groups in theparish room led by the Vicar. This is another in the series of Pilgrim Continued on p 4

Courses from the Church of England, but you don't need tohave been to any of the other courses to take part. We willbe looking at the Eucharist: from Jesus' own instructions, tothe meaning and importance of the Eucharist in our Chris-tian lives today. Accessible and interesting whether youare very new to Christianity or you have been a churchgo-er for many years. Phone or email me on 0208 393 1297or [email protected] with any questions or to signup. Please bring £10 to the first session to cover the bookand refreshments for the whole course.

EWELL VILLAGE FAIROn 6 November there will be a meeting to discuss Ewell

Village Fair 2018, starting at 8pm parish room. After thegreat success of this year's fair we will start the initialplanning for next year. Each year, there is a changeover inthose involved, which keeps ideas fresh, but also meansthe continuation of the Fair always feels somewhat precar-ious until we know we have a full committee! In recentyears, we have been glad to welcome some new faces ontothe planning committee every year, and perhaps there is anEPN reader or two for whom this might be true this year?Just turn up to the meeting if you might be interested, orget in touch with me or anyone who has been involvedwith the fair to find out more.

ALL SOULS' DAYAll Souls' Day is the day when we especially remember

those whom we love who have died. We are holding ourAll Souls Services on the nearest Saturday, 4 November.Services are 12noon Said Requiem Eucharist and 4pmService of Readings and Prayers. At both services, we willread out names of the departed and remember them. If youwould like the name of a loved one who has died read outat these services, please put the name in the blue box inchurch, or email [email protected] with thedetails.

PLAYING FIELDThe church field, adjacent to the churchyard extension,

is now in use as a playing field by Ewell Castle School onsome weekday afternoons. It is good to see this projectfinally come to fruition after years of planning and devel-opment. It is a positive use for what was previously un-used land, in line with local public policy, and it gives thefield a use without requiring any building. As it is beingused by such a local school it cuts down on traffic andtransport in Church Street. The lease ensures that noon-street parking will be used in connection with the useof the field. Finally, as I explained when the proposalswere initially made, the rental income which the churchreceives will contribute towards the expenses of maintain-ing the churchyard extension, which is an active church-yard. It is important for all those who visit the churchyardthat it is kept in good condition, and this income will assistus in doing that.Your friend and Parish PriestRussell Dewhurst

Thanks be to thee, Lord Jesus Christ,For all the benefitsWhich thou hast won for us,For all the pains and insultsWhich thou hast borne for us.O most merciful Redeemer,Friend and brother,May we know thee more clearly,Love thee more dearly,Follow thee more nearlyDay by day.

Give me, O Lord, a steadfast heart which no un-worthy affection may drag downwards; give me anunconquered heart which no tribulation can wearout; an upright heart which no unworthy purposemay tempt aside.

Bestow on me also, O Lord my God, understand-ing to know you, diligence to seek you, wisdom tofind you, and a faithfulness that may finally embraceyou.

Bring us, O Lord God, at the last awakeninginto the house and gate of heaven, to enter intothat gate and dwell in that house, where thereshall be no darkness nor dazzling, but one equallight; no noise nor silence, but one equal music;no fears nor hopes, but an equal possession; noends nor beginnings, but one equal eternity, inthe habitations of thy majesty and thy glory, world without end.

O God, we remember before you those on whomdisaster has come.Bless those whose dear ones have been killed andthose whose dear ones have lost their lives seekingto save others.Bless those who have lost their homes and a life-time's toil.Help us to remember those who, in the fire service,life-boat service, police and medical services, risktheir lives for others. In your love remember those whose lives will neverbe the same again.

O God, from whom to be turned is to fall,To whom to be turned is to rise,With whom to stand is to abide for ever;Grant us your help in all our duties,Your guidance in all our perplexities,Your protection in all our dangersYour peace in all our sorrows.

OLD AND NEWWhat doth the Lord require of thee?----

to do justlyto love mercyto walk humbly with thy God.

Micah 6.8

As, therefore, God’s picked representatives, puri-fied and beloved, put on that nature which is mercifulin action, kindly in heart and humble in mind. Acceptlife, and be most patient and tolerant with one anoth-er, always ready to forgive if you have a differ-ence with anyone. Forgive as freely as theLord has forgiven you. And, aboveeverything else, be truly loving, forlove binds all the virtues together inperfection.

RAY'S GATEIt having been decided that the very dilapidated gate to the

two churchyard sheds in Church Street would not much longerwithstand many more attempts to open it without itdisintegrating, Ray Eyres undertook the construction andreplacement of a new gate and posts.

But there was a vast quantity of vegetation, ivy and the like, intertwined with the adjacent fence that he, assisted byRosemary Eyres, had first to clear, revealing, when cleared, thesorry state of the hidden fence.

Ray purchased new timber posts, timber fencing panels, theassociated ironmongery, and post grout; measured andconstructed the new gate and posts, painted them, and dug thepost-holes; and the posts and gate were levelled and erected inthe course of a long morning.

However, he somehow thought that it looked incomplete, sodecided to purchase, at possibly great expense, two finials, each of which now adorn the top of each post (see photo below).

Whilst the labour cost is given free, the timber andironmongery are not so similarly freely given by Wickes, butthe expensive looking finials were apparently old stock, andwere bought for princely sum of two pence – not each – thepair!

The gate can now be opened without holding it to prevent itfalling to pieces – many thanks, Ray and Rosemary.

The next step will be to replace what remains of the fence(see photo) on the one side and re-wire the fencing on the other– any help or contributions will be gratefully accepted.

There is also a great deal of debris, including muchvegetation and some glass, still remaining behind the gate, thatneeds clearing away. Any one interested in helping will haveour grateful thanks, and will find the gate padlock key in thekey safe in the office.

A TRADITIONAL PRAYEROF A 17th CENTURY NUNLord thou knowest better than l know myself,That I am growing older and will someday be old.Keep me from the fatal habit of thinkingI must say something on every subject and onevery occasion.

Release me from craving to straightening outeverybody's affairs.Make me thoughtful but not moody,Helpful but not bossy. With my fast store of wisdom, it seems a pityNot to use it all, but that thou knowest Lord,That I want a few friends at the end.

Keep my mind free from the recital of endlessdetails.Give me wings to get to the point.Seal my lips on my aches and pains,They are increasing, and love of rehearsing themIs becoming sweeter as the years role by.

I dare not ask for grace enough to enjoy the tales ofother pains,But help me to endure them with patience.I dare not ask for improved memory,But for growing humilityAnd a lessing cocksurenessWhen my memory seems to clash with thememories of others.

Teach me the glorious lesson that occasionally Imay be mistaken.Keep me reasonably sweet.I do not want to be a saint - some of them are hardto live with,But a sour old person is one of the crowning worksof the devil.Give me the ability tosee good things inunexpected placesAnd talents inunexpected people.

And, give me, O Lord, the grace to tell themso.

Amen
