Tesco School Uniform

We have now added the unbranded items of school uniform to the Tesco website available ordering. Tesco are aware there was a problem with ordering some items of uniform but this has now been resolved.

Macmillan Coffee Morning The Macmillan coffee morning and cake sale will be taking place on the 30th September, any donations of cakes will be gratefully received. The Fox Pub Car Park Please may we remind you that The Fox carpark is a private car park for paying customers and should on-ly be used by parents if they have been in there. They are supporters of the school and the events that we run and it would be nice to show them the same courtesy by supporting their business.

School Hours The school hours are 8:50am to 3:15pm. You can deliver your child to the playground from 8:40am (when staff are on duty) and collect from their class at 3:15pm. The school gates are closed at 8:55am and will be opened at 3:00pm. If your child is late you will need to come to the office to sign them in. If someone else is collecting your child from school, please make sure the class staff or office are aware. If your child is off sick an adult needs to inform us and the nature of the illness. If your child is in late, an adult needs to come to the office and sign them in.

After School Supervision

Acorns (Term 1) Ourselves. We are welcoming our brand new Acorns with great excitement this term! The new Recep-tion children will be settling into their new class and getting to know each other and their new school. The grown up Year 1’s will be taking on more responsibility in the classroom this year and will be spending more time working in the Year 1 area to make it a learning zone that they can call their own. This year we will hit the ground running and jump straight into our first topic: ‘Ourselves’. We will be investigating all the things that make us, us. This is a brilliant first term topic to get to know all the things we are really good at and the things that we are interested in which may help us with our learning. Philosophy and Literacy we will be focusing on feelings and emotions, using existing stories and making up our own stories through ‘Helicopter Story Telling’ to discuss how and why people might feel a certain way. In Science we will be learning all about our body and senses and what we can do to help our body be healthy! We are also welcoming two new adults to the classroom, making Team Acorns even more awesome!

(Term 2) Toys. Everyone loves to play and this term we will be exploring all things toys! We will be investi-gating what toys children from all around the world play with and we will look into the history of toys themselves as well as the materials used to make them. We will be creating our own Toy Museum that the grownups from home will be invited to, as well as the rest of the school. Having been to school for a whole term now, the Reception Acorns are practically part of the furniture! And our Year 1’s are experts at being responsible Key Stage 1 learners. We will continue with all our hard work and efforts in our learning, With Christmas just around the corner, this term will include the Key Stage 1 Nativity play, the Acorns and Willows will join forces to amaze you all with their performance. We will be working on lots of Christmas songs and stories throughout the term as well as producing some winter poetry. Please come and talk to us if you want to find out more. We will be sending home class newsletters to keep you informed with any important information and also events that are coming soon.

Willows

Term 1

Fire! Fire!

It's all about fire this term where Willows will be learning about the Great Fire of London and Samuel Pepys, fire safety and The Gunpowder Plot.

We will be practising our joined handwriting and through literacy and history we will be writing seasons and firework poems, sequencing, diaries, fact cards and information, newspaper reports, posters and labelling. Our role play area will be Samuel Pepys’ house.

In maths we will be learning all about adding and subtracting numbers as well as problem solving. We will also be exploring measuring and graphs.

E-Safety will be our main focus in computing but we will also be learning a using a range of different software packages to create pieces of work across the curriculum.

RE is Harvest festival time as well as learning some of the stories starting from The Creation.

Through science we will be drawing human and animal life cycles and finding about healthy living and exercise.

We will also be celebrating the country of India in our Multi cultural week looking at Rangoli patterns, learning some Indian style dance in PE and finding out about the Festival of Diwali.

Term 2

Toys R Us!

Toys! Toys! Toys! Christmas is on its way! A busy term with KS1 presenting this year's Christmas nativity production all about the birth Of Jesus.

Literacy is all about writing letters of persuasion to Father Christmas, poems about animals, toys and Christmas and writing Christmas present lists.

Toys in History is all about comparing old and new toys and reading Old Bear Stories.

As our topic is toys we will be exploring and playing games and using controllable toys through computing, looking at algorithms of instructions and evaluating each game and toy.

This term Science and Geography are linked looking at Living things and finding out what each animal needs to survive in their habitat.

We will be developing our addition and subtraction further in our maths problem solving and we will be exploring these skills using money. We will be measuring ingredients to make Christmas treats. Our role play area will be a toy shop where we can practise using money to buy toys and give change.

Our Art topic will be using the techniques of appliqué and embroidery to make amazing Christmas

decorations.

Elms We have another exciting year of work planned for the lovely Elms class. Our first topic is ‘Rotten Romans’, where possible our learning will be linked to this. We will be writing poems, stories and non-fiction pages linked to our topic. In mathematics we will continue to work on problem solving with particular focus on addition and subtraction strategies. In Art we will be making Mosaics and finding out about the traditions behind this ancient art form. Using maps for various purposes will be our focus within Geography - we will be exploring where the Romans controlled; both within the UK and further afield. Not all our work links to the Romans. In Science will be studying animals and humans, Year 2 will focus on changes from babies to adulthood whilst Year 3 will explore skeletons and teeth. In RE Year 2 focus on Judaism and Year 3 on rules for living. Our computing work will create animations and in French we will be learning greetings and instructions.

Sycamores The new Super Sycamores are going to be immersed in the rainforests of the world. We are going to find out: where rainforests can be found; what can be found there; the weather conditions and why they are so important to the whole planet. We will also be finding out the different habitats that can be found between the different layers of the forests. The rainfor-ests will inspire our writing using descriptive writing and explanation texts.

As well as exploring the rainforests we are going to be historians looking into the ancient civilisation of the Mayans. Finding out: who they were; where they were and how they have influenced our lives today? The Mayans told many myths which we will learn and use to create our own.

In numeracy we will be expanding our knowledge of numbers and digits, solving real life problems in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, using decimals and money.

During science we will be investigating how light and sound works, how it travels and how we

can (and do) use them. The rest of the term will be electrifying! The whole class will be

working safely with electricity to design and make our own torches. Hopefully we will find

some budding electrical engineers.

Oaks

Peaky Pyramids and Freaky Pharaohs

We begin our learning journey on the banks of the River Nile where Literacy lessons will be based around stories from Ancient Egypt which have been passed down over the last 4,000 years. We will be writing extensively and this term we will be focussing particularly on grammar and punctuation.

In mathematics we will be working with decimals, rounding large numbers, fractions and converting measurements. (These themes will all help with the topic this term!)

Exploring tombs, unwrapping mummies, and searching maps and timelines are some of the activities we have planned during this term which hopefully will excite and engage our young explorers. There may even be some amazing discoveries rather like Howard Carter’s in our history and geography lessons!

What did Ancient Egyptians eat? What were their jobs and why did they live by the Nile? These are already some of the amazing questions that have been asked in the class. The children have eagerly written on our working wall the questions they would like to research and answer over the coming weeks.

We plan to have an Egyptian feast too, where we will wear our jewellery designs that we will have made in Art and we will be able to celebrate our Egyptian houses which we will have designed and made in our DT lessons.

As usual, a busy time in Oaks this term, welcome to Year 5 & 6!

Your child will be doing a Christmas art project in class again this year and they will have the opportunity to have their work made into beautiful Christmas cards and wrapping paper for you

to purchase for family and friends.

You will be able to view your child’s work on the 20th October 2016 at 3.15pm and then order your requirements shortly after online.

Thank you for your patience whilst we get up and running with ParentMail. Whilst this seems to be working perfectly for most of you there does seem to be a few teething problems of which have been reported to ParentMail and will hopefully be rectified shortly.

If you would like assistance with setting this up then please do not hesitate to speak to Mrs Cock in the school office.
