Gerry & Rose Wilson. These two individuals started their story in August of 1953 when they walked down the wedding aisle. They adopted a child and then gave birth to three more children within the next two and a half years. One of them was a financial advisor, the other, a former TV cooking show host. Family and work placed at the top of the list of their priorities. Neither one was ready to risk all their savings when one of their grown children suggested launching a new family business.

At first they looked at Solvang, but it didn’t seem right for them. Then they discovered Temecula and in 1996 they decided to take a gamble on creating a small winery and called it Wilson Creek Winery. They sold their home in South Pasadena and by 1997, three of their children and their spouses picked up from where they were living to move to Temecula too. Now that the family is grown, they still enjoy spending time together. In fact, three of their children and their respective spouses are key participants in the business.

Today they own 90 acres and sell over 30,000 cases of wine each year. Each weekend the winery welcomes more than 1,000 visitors. Their winery hosts multiple charity events each year that bring in hundreds of thousands of dollars, and the Temecula Valley Chamber of Commerce named them 2010 Gold Business of the Year. This family enterprise started with a dream before it grew into the successful commercial entity it has become since the tasting room doors opened in 2000.

Last issue we outlined the craziness that occurs in Sacramento prior to the June legislative crossover date, when any bill that’s been introduced during the session must pass from its house of origin to the other house or it dies. Well, as crazy as those days are, August is even worse.

Our Legislators just got back to work on the 4th after a few weeks off to rest, relax, enjoy their families or maybe take a free trip courtesy of some lobbying group or another. Others took the time to line up attorneys to try to stay out of jail for shenanigans they’d pulled. And believe it or not, a few actually took the time to meet up with their constituents back home to find out what their neighbors think about the job they are doing and get their input on the bills they will be voting on between now and the end of the year. A few.

Did I say end of the year? Well, yearend actually comes for our legislature the end of this month. Every bill that still has a prayer of becoming a law (and there are still hundreds), must be passed by August 31 or it’s toast. August 15 is the last day any committee that deals with fiscal matters will meet and report bills to the floor. That means if a bill has any monetary impact on the state it will have to vetted by committee prior to this date to see if it will fit in next year’s budget. If a bill has a D behind the authors name it will fit the budget

2014 LEGISLATIVE SUMMIT: “ G O V E R N M E N T R E G U L A T I O N : O P P O R T U N I T Y O R O B S T A C L E ”

IT’S THAT TIME OF YEAR A Y E A R - E N D P R I M E R F R O M T H E S W C L C

regardless of the cost. If it’s an R bill, it will not fit the budget regardless of the cost.

Then from the 18th through the 31st (assuming they meet on Saturday and Sunday), there will be floor sessions only - no committees. The hundreds of bills that have been working their way through the process, some for the past two years, have to be passed during these two weeks or they will have been for naught. Hopefully this will be the result for many, many of these bills but never enough and rarely the right ones.

After the end of the first week, the 22nd, no more amendments will be allowed to any bill. What you see is what you get. No more last minute gut & amends that would turn a benign bill to name a section of freeway into a job killing monster that would raise your taxes by 30%. Supposedly that can’t happen anymore after the 22nd, although somehow last minute changes always seem to creep in. That’s why you have to stay vigilant right up til the end because you never know precisely what will emerge from the bowels of the legislature to get dumped on the Governor’s desk.

Then the legislature has one last week to pass everything. One week, hundreds of bills, mass hysteria, crying in the streets, sleepovers in the chambers, pilgrims awaiting white smoke to signify consensus. Wait, we don’t need consensus anymore, the D’s control the show. Never mind.

Whatever’s left after August 31st heads over to the Governor’s desk and he has until the end of September to sign or veto the mountain of effluvium. That’s our last chance to impact a bill. We’ve spent the last year working with legislative authors, committee members and floor votes to advance or kills bills that impact our business community. Now it’s up to the Governor and we have one more shot at convincing him a bill is either really good and deserves his signature of approval or really bad and should be vetoed. And with Governor Brown you just never know what he’ll do. Heck, most of the time he doesn’t even know what he’ll do. I will say that Governor Brown has a track record on business friendly bills about 20% higher than his predecessor so we remain optimistic.

Being a member of the Temecula Valley Chamber of Commerce (TVCC) offers numerous benefits and keeps business owners on top of important, ever-changing issues and trends within the City. Membership with the TVCC gives your business credibility, making consumers more likely to do business with you. Founded in 1966, the TVCC has long been a crucial element to Temecula’s business initiatives. The Chamber fosters a greater sense of business community, identifies emerging leaders, and advocates on behalf of small businesses. To learn more about being a member of the TVCC, call Katie Cook, Membership Director, today!

“I write this with an incredible amount of emotion and thankfulness at the same time. I wanted to say thank you for sowing into my life. You guys don’t know how collectively you have played a huge part in my life and words can barely describe how I feel. I came to this valley not knowing anyone besides Loree (my wife) and a friend that introduced us. I decided just a few short years ago to step out in faith and join the chamber as a part of Fitness Together and then Trinity Reprographics. I wanted to get connected and be an active member of making this great valley an even better place. Little did I realize that the chamber staff and its members would become part of my family. Because of the warm reception and true hearts of the chamber staff I was not only nominated as Citizen of the Year, something my family is extremely proud of, but now am working with the finest business owners in the city to bring health and fitness awareness through breaking a Guinness Book of World Record. I’m so grateful to be a business owner myself in this city. I can’t thank you enough for literally changing my life. I am looking forward to a lifetime relationship.”

IT’S OUR TURN I T ’ S O U R T U R N T O S H O W O U R “ C A N D O ” A T T I T U D E !

On March 3, 1983, in an address to the U.S. Olympic Committee, President Ronald Reagan praised Americans for their “can do” spirit and specifically talked about volunteers in Temecula, paying tribute for their efforts in the construction of a community sports park without government funding. In 2013, Perry Peters was recognized by the Temecula Valley Chamber of Commerce with the Lifetime Achievement Award, in part due to Perry’s longstanding dedication to keeping the “Can Do” spirit alive in Temecula. For over 28 years, Perry has been a dedicated leader in our community. When he first moved to Temecula, he became General Manager for the Temecula Valley Chamber of Commerce and in 1989 was instrumental in the incorporation of the City of Temecula. The late President Reagan kept two plaques on his desk, one read “There is no limit to what a man can do or where he can go if he doesn’t mind who gets the credit;” Perry has never been someone afraid to get his hands dirty. The second plaque read “It Can Be Done.” Perry has proven that with determination and perseverance the seemingly impossible can be conquered.

Not long after Reagan died in 2004, Perry helped found the non-profit organization, Friends of Ronald Reagan Sports Park, to keep that spirit alive. Each year the group sponsors scholarships, essay contests and other special events to honor the city’s hard-working young people. This organization came together to raise money and dedicate their time to building the Ronald Reagan “Can Do” Monument, which was unveiled in 2012.Now Perry needs our help! There is still work do be done to complete the “Can Do” monument and Perry and his wife Marianne, are moving out of Temecula at the end of 2014. “Temecula has a long tradition of initiative.” says Perry, “This Monument provides a permanent reminder of this unique source of civic pride, our historic Can-Do spirit.”Perry wants to complete this legacy here in Temecula before he leaves, and needs donations to do it. No amount is too small. Your gift will be an important part of preserving this legacy on to future generations. You can learn more about the completion of the moment and make a donation to the Indiegogo fund raising campaign at http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/ronald-reagan-monument-a-legacy-of-liberty-the-american-spirit.

Roger is an outstanding addition to the TVCC Ambassador program! He served as the 2013 Ambassador Chair and continues to be a huge supporter of the TVCC. His belief in the Chamber and his positive influence with community business owners is the reason that he has enrolled numerous business owners as new members of the Chamber. Roger is committed to making sure the Chamber is an effective way to grow community relationships as well as a way to promote economic growth.

Jennifer has been an active member and Ambassador and attends as many events as she can. She attended 17 events in May including Chamber and Valley Young Professionals. She continues to promote the TVCC in a positive way and encourages other member businesses to become part of the organization. Jennifer is willing to assist TVCC staff at any event or workshop and has become a great leader within the Ambassador team.

Congratulations to Liza...second time winner this year! She attended 17 events in June which included the Chamber and Valley Young Professionals. Liza not only attends almost every event but also plays a very active role in each event; she mentors new members, greets guests as they arrive at Mixers and attends most ribbon cutting celebrations. It has been a joy having Liza as an Ambassador and the Chamber is very appreciative of all her hard work and continued support!

Liza has played a very active role in the Ambassador program since joining in 2013. She has assisted in many capacities within the Chamber and most recently the Chamber’s retention program and new member welcome committee. Liza attends as many events as possible in order to bring awareness to the many services provided by Novell & Novell Counseling Services. The TVCC is grateful for Liza’s participation and her continual positive attitude in the community.

Roger has been a member of the TVCC for several years and jumped right in the Ambassador program after joining. He has also been involved in various capacities within the Chamber including Ambassador Chair and is the current Membership Committee Chair. Roger continually assists the Chamber with recruitment of new members, retention calls, City Walk events and others. Roger is currently attempting to break the world’s record for the largest circuit training ever held at a single location on Saturday, January 17th 8am at the Lake Elsinore Storm Stadium.
