Determine a theme or central idea of a text and analyze in detail its development over the course of the text, including how it emerges and is shaped and refined by specific details; provide an objective summary of the text.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.9-10.4

Lesson Objective(s): Students willAnalyze a poem for specific words and phrases

Identify man-made objects in their natural social environment

Connect the natural environment with a man-made environment

Create a poem based on a template

Introduce the Learning Activity:I will tell students that they will be writing a poem based on a major theme of science fiction; that is, the natural versus the man-made. Students will know that their poem will also be based on another poem, which they will draw from.

To get students interested, I will ask them what they already know about poetry, and if they know any major themes of poetry. I will ask similar questions about science fiction.

Provide Information:I will tell students how to get to my website, where I will have listed the other 2 websites needed to complete the activity

I will explain what verbs and adjectives are so students know what to look for in the nature poem, as well as the importance of imagery to poetry

I will explain what type of man-made objects students will be able to include in their pictures, and what they will be using this picture for

Provide Practice:I will begin by telling students we are beginning a unit on science fiction, and that every Monday throughout the year, we will be working with poetry. With this in mind, I will ask students what sets poetry apart from other forms of writing, leading them to the subject of imagery in poetry. I will then ask them what some frequent subjects of poetry are until someone mentions nature.

I will then ask students what some themes of science fiction are. If nobody mentions it, I will be sure to lead the discussion to nature vs. technology as a major theme. I will then tell students that they will be combining man-made objects and natural objects in a poem based firmly in imagery.

I will ask students to retrieve their cell phones and take a selfie, making sure that they have a man-made object visible in the background. I will tell them that they will be using it in the poem.

Students will make their way back to their computers, where I will instruct them to go to my website and find the Resources tab. Once there, they will be going to a poetry website containing a massive array of poetry. The poems can be sorted by subject, so I will ask students to look through poems in the Nature category.

Students will be tasked with finding a nature poem that they like. They can use one they already know of, or they can try and find one. I will ask them to take notes of specific words in the poem: verbs, adjectives, and any specific phrases that resonate with them.

Once students have their notes, I will have them go back to my website and click on the Diamonte Poem link, keeping the tab with their poem open in case they need to refer back to it. I will also ask the students to pull up the selfie they took.

Once on the Diamonte Poem website, students will read the directions and fill in the blank spaces. They must connect the subject of their poem with the object in the background of their poem. The Diamonte Poem will ask for specific verbs and adjectives related to both objects. This is where students will use the verbs and adjectives they took from the nature poem. They will then have to come up with verbs and adjectives for the object in their picture. They can only refer to that specific object: for example, if they have a clock in their background, they can only come up with words for that specific clock, not for clocks in general.

Once finished, I will ask students if they would like to share their finished poems. If not, I will go around and look at the poems, the pictures they took, and the nature poem they chose.

I will wrap up the lesson by asking students if they found any connections between their man-made objects and the natural object. After a brief discussion, I will remind students of the science fiction theme we were working with, telling them that they will have just delved into this theme and explaining that we will be working more with it tomorrow.

Provide Knowledge of Results:I will ask students what words they took from their nature poems and ask them to explain why they chose it. I will ask the same thing with the words they chose for their object, making sure they are making connections between the words and object.

I will also collect the poems the students wrote at the end of the day and write a few quick comments. I will use it more as formative assessment than summative assessment.

Review the Activity:I will ask students if they found or made any connections between the two subjects of their poem, and tie that into the theme of man-made versus the natural in science fiction. I will also ask them what sorts of images they used in their poems, and how they fit into science fiction.

Method of Assessment: CriteriaUnsatisfactorySatisfactory

Uses specific words from nature poem

Uses words for specific object in picture

Makes connection between 2 objects
