DESCRIPTION

The TBR Computing team research recorded a webinar on Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2013, recapping vendor performance as reported in TBR's 3Q12 Computing Data Center Benchmark, with a focus on how specific vendor, go-to-market and resource management strategies impact financial performance. TBR Senior Analyst Christian Perry shared his perspective on the results and provided additional insight into the performance and future of the data center market. This deck was used in this presentation. Topics he addressed were: •2012 is proving to be a watershed year for converged infrastructure, as Cisco continues to enjoy dramatic x86 server growth (61% in 3Q12) on the shoulders of its pioneering UCS converged platform and other vendors are responding by investing heavily in their converged stacks, including solutions from Dell, HP and IBM. •Huawei achieved strong year-to-year x86 and storage revenue growth in 3Q12 by continuing to apply the low-price model of its traditional telco business to its enterprise business. •TBR expects vendors will see improvements in revenue as x86-based converged solutions and updated proprietary models gain traction among data center customers — despite overall server market revenue being down in 3Q12 from its year-ago performance. CBQ 3Q13 Research Outlook: Key VendorsTBRTablet vendors are encountering competitive pressures, leading some tomake aggressive portfolio investments in Windows 8 devicesWindows 8 offers vendors a way to differentiate from Apple on features, not priceAppleApple introduced the 7.9-inch iPad mini and thefourth generation iPad in November, which helpedboost tablet growth in 4Q12 amid rising competitionfrom lower-cost competing tablets, such as the sub-$200 Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire.HPDespite a refreshed portfolio that includes Windows8 tablets (which, on paper, compete with ApplesiPad), HP will struggle to compete with mobile-centric vendors such as Apple and Lenovo. Aninability to compete in the tablet market will hinderHPs growth in the consumer segment, where its PCsand printing solutions are consistently losing marketshare.AcerAcer, with only a single tablet, will focus on the high-end market to support higher tablet margins.
