It will involve a warm, loving community that’s not nearperfect, but is enthusiastic, alive, growing, involved, cultured,educated,andintimewillbecomemyfamily. I will work with a Rabbi who is vibrant, sensitive, patient,ambitious,charismatic,kindandcompassionate,whowillinspireme to grow and deepen my spirituality while respecting measequal. Iknowthatasa teamwewillwear thehatsofclergy,chaplain, teacher, mentor, and friend in the community andultimatelysupportandtrustoneanothercompletely. Then,Icontinued..... In this job I will sometimes sing with live musicians onShabbat.Thecongregationwillbemiddleoftheroad,somewhattraditional,andopen-minded,willingtotrynewideas.Theb’naimitzvahstudentswill leadmuchoftheShabbatmorningservice,with myself and the Rabbi by their sides. There will be a largevarietyofadulteducationprogramsaswellassupportgroupstocomfort those in need.We will have bikor cholim visits to localhospital facilities, and we will be involved in tzedakah projectsbothlocallyandnationally.Ourcongregationwillsupportthearts,andwillactasacommunitycenter,holdinglecturesondevelopingissues,discussiongroups,concerts,andwillincorporateanythingintellectually and spiritually stimulating that is relative to ourcommunity members. Our youth programs will be dynamic andengaging and fun, and we will encourage and ultimately strivetowardbuildingastrongfamilyeducationprogram,becausetheycarryourfuture.IwillbeacceptedandembracedforwhoIamandforallthatIoffer. AsIcompletemyfourthyearherewithourTempleBethDavidfamilyandwiththearrivalofournewRabbiDavid,Ibelievemyvisionhasbecomereality.And,thereareevenextrabonusfeaturesthat I could not have dreamed of envisioning: Rabbi David’sbeautiful daughters for my Lila to love just like sisters, frolicwitheachShabbatandholiday, andgrowupbeside,hiswonderwomanwifeHeatherwhosecompassioniscontagious,andRabbi’smusicaltalentthatinspiresmysoul.IhavebeensoblessedthesepastfouryearswithsomuchloveandcompassionfrommyTBDfamily,andtheselast9monthshavebeenfilledwithexploration,creation,andtransformationwithRabbiDavidandithasbeensomuchfun!AsItoldRabbiDavidduringhisinstallationceremony,Iamsogratefulthathechoseustobehisfamily.IcelebratethisnewbeginningwithRabbiDavid,andIlookwithexcitementtoourfutureheretogetherandallthatitwilloffer. Re-Packaging Judaism

Foryearswehavetalkedin theJewishworld,andspecificallyintheConservativemovement,oftheneedtore-packageourselves.WhenwelookatthenumberofJewswhoarechoosingJudaismandagain,specifically,ConservativeJudaismcomparedtojustafewyearsago–wemustacknowledgethatwearenotreachingpeoples’heartsandsoulsasweusedto.It’snotthatourmessagehassouredorbecomeanylessprofound–justthatourdeliveryofthatmessageandthewayitispackagedisn’treachingandinspiringtheJewsofthe21stcentury. Veryoftenwemixupthepackagingforthepackage– the wrapping for the contents. Think of a preciouspieceofchinathatyouwanttosendtoyourfriendacrossthecountry.Whenyouwrapitupforshippingyouuselayeruponlayerofbubblewrapandtissuepaper.Thenyouplacethatinaboxfullofpackingpeanuts.Bythetimeyou’redone–thecontentofyourpackageishardtofindinallofthepackagingthatyou’veusedtoprotectit. IntheJewishworldwecallthispackaging–SiyagotLaTorah–fencesaroundtheTorah.Thesefenceskeepus from transgressing the most important laws andvaluesofJudaism.Theyalsocreatelayersandlayersofcustomandtraditionthatveryoftendistractusfromthecontenttheyaretryingtoprotect–Torah.Inre-packagingJudaismandTorahweneednotwaterdownorsimplifythecoreteachings,lawsandpractices–onthecontrary,wemustamplifyandcelebratethem.Andwemustalsodistinguishbetweenwhatistrulyatthecoreandwhatwehavelayeredoverit. In our community too, we are searching for ourcore:Whatareweabout?Whoarewe?Whodowewanttobe?Eversincemyarrivalalmostayearagowehavebeen hard at work asking these questions and peelingawaythelayersofpackaging.. IwonderwhatyoufeelisatthecoreofyourJudaism?What core ideas do you protect with layers of bubblewrap? I wonder what might be at the core ofTempleBethDavid?Ifweweretobreakthroughthefencesthatwehavesetup–whatwouldwefindattheheartofourbeatingandlivingcommunity?

Ourkidsdirectingandproducingalmost-but-not-quite“Oscar”qualityvideoversionsofBiblestories. MakingIndiandessertswithScholarinResidenceRahelMusleah,whoalsointroducedustoaflavorofJudaismfromIraqandIndia,asshehelpedleadShabbatservices. EverysinglePurimcarnival,especiallytheonewhereIwasmadeupasaclown(andprobablyscaredabunchofkids.Sorry!) BarniethedinosaurandmyFridaymorningpre-schoolworkout. became a Bat Mitzvah on April 25, 2015. Sarah is a 7th grader at Watson B. Duncan Middle School. She enjoys tak-ing dance and piano as her extracurricu-lar activities during the school year. This will be her 5th summer at Blue Star Camps in Hendersonville, NC. For her Mitzvah Project, Sara is collecting new or gently used music playing devices and creating a playlist of joyful songs to give to the Quantum House for children who are undergoing medical treatment at St.

Iknowthatasa teamwewillwear thehatsofclergy,chaplain, teacher, mentor, and friend in the community andultimatelysupportandtrustoneanothercompletely. Then,Icontinued..... In this job I will sometimes sing with live musicians onShabbat.Thecongregationwillbemiddleoftheroad,somewhattraditional,andopen-minded,willingtotrynewideas.Theb’naimitzvahstudentswill leadmuchoftheShabbatmorningservice,with myself and the Rabbi by their sides. There will be a largevarietyofadulteducationprogramsaswellassupportgroupstocomfort those in need.We will have bikor cholim visits to localhospital facilities, and we will be involved in tzedakah projectsbothlocallyandnationally.Ourcongregationwillsupportthearts,andwillactasacommunitycenter,holdinglecturesondevelopingissues,discussiongroups,concerts,andwillincorporateanythingintellectually and spiritually stimulating that is relative to ourcommunity members. Our youth programs will be dynamic andengaging and fun, and we will encourage and ultimately strivetowardbuildingastrongfamilyeducationprogram,becausetheycarryourfuture.IwillbeacceptedandembracedforwhoIamandforallthatIoffer. Foryearswehavetalkedin theJewishworld,andspecificallyintheConservativemovement,oftheneedtore-packageourselves.WhenwelookatthenumberofJewswhoarechoosingJudaismandagain,specifically,ConservativeJudaismcomparedtojustafewyearsago–wemustacknowledgethatwearenotreachingpeoples’heartsandsoulsasweusedto.It’snotthatourmessagehassouredorbecomeanylessprofound–justthatourdeliveryofthatmessageandthewayitispackagedisn’treachingandinspiringtheJewsofthe21stcentury. Veryoftenwemixupthepackagingforthepackage– the wrapping for the contents. Think of a preciouspieceofchinathatyouwanttosendtoyourfriendacrossthecountry.Whenyouwrapitupforshippingyouuselayeruponlayerofbubblewrapandtissuepaper.Thenyouplacethatinaboxfullofpackingpeanuts.Bythetimeyou’redone–thecontentofyourpackageishardtofindinallofthepackagingthatyou’veusedtoprotectit.
