    General Peter Pace is the Vice C hairm an of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.In this capacity, he is a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and theNation's second highest ranking military officer. General Pace is thesixth officer to hold the position and the first M arine.As the Vice Ch airman, General Pace serves as the Chairman of theJoint Requirements Oversight Council, Vice Chairman of the DefenseAcquisition Bo ard, and as a member of the National S ecurity C ouncilDeputies Committee and the Nuclear Weapons Council. In addition,he acts for the Chairm an in all aspects of the Plann ing, Programm ingand Budgeting System to include participating in meetings of theDefense Resources Board.General Pace was born in Brooklyn, N. Y ., and raised in Teaneck,New Jersey. He received his comm ission in June 1967, follow inggraduation from th e United States N aval Academy. He also holds aMaster's Degree in Business A dministration from George W ashingtonUniversity an d attended Harvard University for the Senior Executives in National and International Securityprogram.Upon com pletion of The Basic School, Quantico, Va., in 1968, he was assigned to the 2d Battalion, 5 thMarines, 1st M arine Division in the R epublic of V ietnam, serving first as a Rifle Platoon Leader andsubsequently as Assistant Operations Officer.
