SUSTAINABLITY REPORT 2018
Mike MichelCEO of Telenor Serbia
Corporate responsibility is much more than just a wish to do
the “right thing”. When a company commits itself to being
responsible, that implies that everything it does aims at having
positive impact on customers, partners, citizens, environment,
employees and the society.
Since August 2018, Telenor is part of PPF Group, which
operates in 22 countries, on three continents and for which
telecommunication is one of the strategic areas. Nevertheless,
when we look on the year behind us and activities in the field of
corporate responsibility, the key word is – continuity.
Creating safe online environment and building digital
competences are among our top priorities. We are living in the
digital world that opens incredible possibilities for learning and
improving the daily life. Digital literacy is becoming the basic
child’s right in 21st century, and all that carries certain risks. By
using core expertise and accelerated growth of digitalisation,
Telenor is actively participating in creating safe internet and
educates, not only children and youth, but also parents, guardians
and teachers to take advantage of online world. The project
Family Safety Net, which we are implementing in cooperation
with UNICEF, our partner for many years, with the support of the
Ministry for Education, Science and Technology Development
and Užice Child Rights Centre aims to reach 100,000 parents
and 2,000 educators and teachers to go through training on the
internet safety.
With all benefits of telecommunications industry, we strive to help
overcoming the challenges the society in Serbia is faced with. We
support projects in which technologies and digital solutions are
used to reduce inequalities and connect the society better, by
investing in education, social inclusion, environment, culture and
arts. Together with our partners, we have created new platform
such as the application Dostupnibeograd.rs to help persons with
disabilities to easily find their way around in Belgrade, while
through the initiative Sport for All, in cooperation with UNICEF, we
have enabled children with difficulties and disabilities develop
their capacities through play, recreation and sports.
Through regular business operations and relation towards
partners and suppliers, we endeavour to achieve market standards
in the segments of environmental protection, human rights and
health and safety. In the past year, we have signed 68 Agreements
on Responsible Conduct with partners, which undertook to respect
regulations and fulfil their obligations in these areas. With re-
certification of ISO standard 14001: 2015 in the area of human
environment, we have channelled our efforts to reduce of resource
usage, by encouraging customers to opt for electronic instead of
paper bill, recycle mobile phones and electronic equipment.
I have mentioned only some of the initiatives, and in this report
you will find detailed description of others, which have been
implemented in the previous year.
I would like to thank all our partners and associates for good
cooperation and great results we have achieved together. I also
want to thank our employees who, with their attitude to work and
continuous efforts, make Telenor responsible and better company
every day. I am confident that together we can create positive
changes and create a better future for Serbia.

According to results of an anonymous and independent
survey with more than 10,000 participants traditionally
carried out by the Infostud portal, Telenor is the second
Most Favoured Employer in 2018. That ranks us one
place higher compared to the previous survey.
More and more people of various profiles wish to work
in the industry of information and communication
technologies, which also includes some new professions
and competencies. Flexible working time, stimulating
workspace, quality relationship with employees, open and
dynamic working environment in which employees may
develop and advance – are just some of the benefits which
make us one of the most attractive employers.
Results of the survey Most Favoured Employer 2018
demonstrate that the participants consider good
interpersonal relationships and working atmosphere
to be the most important qualities of an employer,
and they were chosen by 76% of the respondents
(compared to 66% in 2016). Treatment of employees
by the management is in second place, while the salary,
i.e. material reasons are in third place.

In Telenor we believe in young people, their ideas,
creativity and driving energy. For this reason, for nine
years we have been providing opportunities to students to
gain their first practical experiences in the areas of their
education, and to become familiar with Telenor’s corporate
culture. Internship programmes allow them to gain insight
into the way the company operates, but also to adopt new
practical knowledge and prepare for their future career.
In 2018 thirteen interns attended the programme
Internship for Students at Telenor.

Telenor operates in a very dynamic industry which is
changing faster than ever, requiring employees to
continuously improve their knowledge and skills and
new methods of work, with the company supporting such
changes through a stimulating and creative workspace.
In accordance with the latest global trends, the workspace
is fully designed and conceptualized so as to respond
to different needs of employees during the working day.
The appearance and setting of the workspace encourage
innovation and cooperation, support team and project
work, but also contain areas for quiet work or telephone
booths for unobstructed communication. In this sense,
employees adjust their work environment to themselves
and the dynamics of their workday.
A creative work environment is complemented by the
Telenor collection of contemporary artists, which is
made up of over 200 works of more than 80 creators of
contemporary local art. By investing in this type of art,
Telenor has also supported young local artists and became
an important partner in their promotion.

Occupational health and safety, as well as the wellbeing of our
employees are priorities in our business. For that reason, we are
aiming to ensure compliance with all statutory requirements
with the aim of preventing illness, damage and injuries at work
and we are working on elimination and reduction of potential
workplace risks. We operate in accordance with the requirements
of the international standard ISO 45001 and continuously
work on the education of employees regarding the topics of
prevention, information and recommendation on careful and
adequate conduct in the workplace.
Along with an annual physical examination, in 2015 we
introduced additional health insurance as an opportunity for
the employees and their families to use the services of private
medical institutions. The employees also have at their disposal
an infirmary which is located in the commercial building of
Telenor, as an alternative to visiting public health centres, and
every employee may transfer their medical record and go to
examinations whenever necessary.
IT IS IMPORTANT
TO KEEP
EMPLOYEES
HEALTHY AND
SATISFIED
Employees have at their disposal a general practitioner on duty,
and the possibility to be treated in the infirmary, which is also an
option for the members of their immediate family, i.e. spouse and
children insured through the employee at Telenor.
Telenor employees have company covered monthly recreation,
which they can choose themselves, and they can choose among
fitness programmes, physical therapies, massages, use of sports
and spa centres and other activities contributing to good health.
Employees also have bicycles at their disposal, for coming to
work and going home, as well as showers which can be used at
any time.
Among the most important benefits mentioned by employees is
the always flexible working time – possibility to work from home
five days a month, and to have shorter business hours on Fridays
during summer.

At Telenor, we are committed to respecting human rights as set out by the documents of the United Nations − Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights and the Ten Principles of the UN Global Agreement. Both documents are based on the UN Charter on Human Rights. Telecommunications allow exchange of ideas and access to information, but also bring many challenges. For that reason, in everyday business we devote a lot of attention to recognizing those challenges and finding adequate answers.

The internet has provided incredible opportunities for
education and entertainment to children; but on the other
hand, it has also increased the risks of exposure to content
unsuitable for their age, cyberbullying and various types of
abuse.
We initiated the project Family Safety Net in 2017 in
cooperation with UNICEF, with the support of the Ministry
of Education, Science and Technological Development
and the Užice Child Rights Centre. The project is focused
on the education of children aged four to eight, as well as
their parents, guardians and educators. One of the main
goals of the project is to train 100,000 parents and 2,000
educators and teachers.

Children start using the internet at an increasingly younger
age, and their parents do not have enough knowledge or
skills to protect them from potential abuses, as evidenced
by a survey developed within this project.
The first encounter with digital devices mostly occurs in the third or fifth year.Every fourth child in of preschool age and more than half of schoolchildren have their own digital device – mobile phone in the first place and tablet in the second place.70 percent of children use their phones independently, 24 percent with someone’s assistance, and only 6 percent of children do not use this device. Two thirds of parents entered into conflict with their child while trying to restrict their time spent online. One third of parents entered into conflict with their children due to restricting available online content. One third of parents cannot effectively block commercial or inappropriate content on the internet.Up to 68 percent of teachers rarely assist students when using the internet.More than half of teachers do not teach children at all how to react if they are disturbed by some content online or if they experience cyberbullying.

Results achieved within the project
The pilot project was successfully initiated in five cities in
Serbia – Belgrade, Kragujevac, Novi Sad, Niš and Užice. After
research, training courses were developed for trainers and
leading teams, but also teachers and educators, and 150 of
them were trained in the said cities. Teachers and educators
initiated a pilot program of workshops in five primary schools
and five preschool institutions in Serbia, with 3,750 children
four to eight years old and approximately 2,000 of their
parents. At the beginning of the school year, we prepared
leaflets about dangers on the internet. The leaflets were
printed in 70,000 copies – for every first-grader in Serbia
and they are available online. We have talked about the
importance of digital competencies and online safety for
younger children at panel discussions with more than 500
teachers and parents in the said cities so as to familiarize
them with the basics of safe internet.
One of the workshops was organized at the Primary School
Laza Kostić in Belgrade
First-graders of the Primary School Laza Kostić in Belgrade
learned about the benefits of using the internet, its dangers
and what digital literacy entails, in a workshop organized
by UNICEF with the support of Telenor. For the first and
second grade students in the Primary School Laza Kostić
in Belgrade, eight interactive workshops on safe use of
the internet were organized, while four workshops were
organized for their parents. The last workshop was a joint
workshop for children and parents and, with the practical
use of digital technologies, both groups found a solution on
how to be a part of the digital world in the best and safest
manner.
Detailed brochures Children and the Internet – Smart from
the Start were distributed in workshops, with specific advice
for children, as well as their parents and teachers.

At the final conference in Velika Plana, the results of the
project Peer Education against Cyberbullying, which was
carried out by the Association of Citizens World of Words
with the support of the Telenor Foundation.
During six months in ten municipalities in Serbia, 14
teachers and 36 peer educators were trained, who
organized 120 workshops at their schools. A total of 3,250
teenagers, aged 12-19, learned how to act safely and
responsibly on the internet.
To what extent the primary and secondary school students
actually heard, learned and transferred the obtained
knowledge was evidenced by short videos received within
the competition organized upon the completion of the
educational workshops. Their works send a very clear
message: there is no place for bullying in the real or the
digital world.

Within the project Improving Digital Literacy with ICT in
Primary Schools in Serbia, which we initiated in 2017,
ten primary schools in Serbia were equipped with
Coprix interactive ABC Books, applications for learning
mathematics and English, interactive boards and tablets.
Through interactive instruction , teachers are allowed to
use adequate and modern teaching programs, with useful
and creative ideas which keep children’s attention in
classes. Reports on the work of students within applications
further facilitate work and provide the possibility of
full dedication to students. Owing to this project, local
communities are also familiar with the advantages
of digital teaching, which in our country additionally
contributes to the promotion of digital literacy from the
first school days.
Interactive teaching was introduced in 280 primary schools
in the past school year and it included more than 16,000
first-graders. This project is carried out by the Citizens’
Association Jerinin grad with the support of the Telenor
Foundation.

Digital technologies are important in increasing the level
of education. This particularly refers to environments with
a large number of people who abandoned primary school
education. According to the information of the Ministry of
Education, Science and Technological Development, this
is most often the case with children of Roma nationality.
For that reason, we have initiated a project that will
increase the number of Roma children who will finish
primary school. This time we have provided interactive
teaching resources for assistance and additional support
to students in mastering reading and writing in the
territory of the Aleksinac Municipality, in cooperation with
the Roma Women’s Association Nada.
The project was conducted in four primary schools and
included 193 students who need this type of additional
support. Pedagogical assistants used the Coprix interactive
ABC Book in their work with children, which facilitated the
process of learning to read and write, and thus master
other materials in school more easily.

Two smart solar benches in Velika Plana were installed
in April in central locations in the city. The benches were
provided by the Telenor Foundation, in cooperation with
the Velika Plana Municipality, aiming to allow citizens to
charge their smart devices using solar energy, and use
Telenor internet.
Strategically, through various projects, the Velika Plana
Municipality reduces expenditures allocated for energy-
generating products and wishes to use alternative
sources of energy such as solar energy, wind energy,
biomass energy. These projects helped in convincing
citizens that solar energy is available and free, and that
investment into renewable energy sources is useful and
profitable.
Smart solar benches, produced by EnGo Planet,
have solar energy, which is available 24 hours a day,
regardless of weather conditions, with a solar panel
supplying 120 watts of electricity per hour. Benches have
four USB ports that can be used for connected various
devices, additional wireless charges, LED lighting, and

Figures of the National Organization of Persons with
Disabilities of Serbia tell us that 12,000 persons with
physical disabilities are registered in Serbia, while the
Association of Deaf and Hard of Hearing of Serbia has
130,000 members.
To what extent are modern technologies actually
available to them and how included are they in the
process of digitization of society?
Through the activities of the Telenor Foundation we
are working on sustainable and innovative digital
solutions which provide equal possibilities to everyone.
Within the Fon Assistants project we have supported
the development of Android applications Deftalk and
DaktiloFon, which will enable greater accessibility to
mobile devices and mobile communications to persons
with disabilities.
The application DaktiloFon continuously recognizes
speech, and turns it into text, which is then saved as a
text document. In this way, persons who have typing
difficulties can dictate their message to their phone and
the application will turn it into a written format, which
can be shared with others as a document via available
applications, such as Viber, Messenger, email. This
whole conversation is seen on the screen as a chat,
making communication with people who don’t know sign
language much easier.
The purpose of this action was to create adjustable
solutions, taking into account that special technologies
are increasingly accessible, thus bridging the digital gap
and creating equal opportunities for development and
progress.

According to unofficial estimates, approximately 700,000
people with disabilities live in our country, while there is no
official data. The availability of infrastructure, structures and
locations is extremely important for persons with disabilities
so they could equally participate in all spheres of life and have
the possibility of unobstructed movement.
The Centre for Society Advancement, with the support of
the Telenor Foundation, within the project A step towards
Accessible Belgrade developed an internet portal and an
Android app dostupnibeograd.rs. It is a database with simple
overview with information on the accessibility of buildings to
persons with disabilities, facilitating their movement and daily
activities.
The application and website allow the users to actively
participate in the creation of a more accessible city. After
registration, the user may rate a location or building, leave a
comment, or even enter the name of the building and general
information on accessibility by themselves.

through games, recreation, and sports.
With our donation, the Society for the Development
of Creativity of the Aleksinac Municipality, with the
professional support of UNICEF, for the first time allowed
children with development difficulties and disabilities,
together with other children, a series of sports and

effect of our activities, products and services. We are
working on putting our ideas and resources in the service
of the environment – from educating employees and the
public to planned actions and initiatives.
Aware that business in accordance with preservation of
the environment requires the company to systematically
approach the introduction of the environmental
management system, eight years ago we implemented
During 2018:
the international standard ISO 14001. In addition to
regular annual inspections, we have even carried out
two recertifications in 2014 and 2017, and successful
transition to the new version ISO 14001:2015.
We regularly analyse our influence on the environment,
and relative to those results – we are working on the
reduction of consumption of resources and carbon
footprint, and all other potentially adverse effects of our
business on the environment.
We reduced the total amount of generated waste by 38%
We reduced electricity consumption in administrative
buildingsand stores by 2%
We reduced fuel consumption in official vehicles by 6.4%
We minimized official airplane travels and reduced them by
21% (in travelled kilometres)
We reduced water consumption in work premises by 23.9%
With almost 40,000 new users of electronic bills in 2018 we
saved 300,000 sheets of paper and 300,000 envelopes.

Joined around one goal, more than 500 participants of
the Belgrade Marathon ran under the flag of the Initiative
Digital Serbia. The purpose of the action was to jointly
express public support and collect funds for further
development of the free portal petlja.org, which provides
an opportunity for primary school students in Serbia to
make their first programming steps.
Telenor joined the #TrkaZaPetlju action with seven other
companies gathered in the initiative Digital Serbia, a non-
profit organization advocating transformation of Serbia
into a digital society. Together with their families, Telenor
employees showed support for the Petlja Foundation
and drew attention to the importance of developing
algorithmic thinking starting as early as primary school.
Funds collected during the race were used for further
development of free interactive materials for teaching and
learning programming.

Aiming to contribute to the systemic resolution of issues
at the national level, we are enabling activation of
humanitarian numbers. In this way we are connecting
charity organizations, foundations, associations and citizens
who wish to simply and quickly donate funds for certain
humanitarian purposes.
Only during last year, a total of RSD
120,182,370 was collected within 21
activated humanitarian numbers. The
majority of actions were intended for
the collection of additional funds for
the support of treatment of citizens,
mostly children and young people,
who are on special therapies.
