Operator Training 22

Detectors: OverviewDetectors: Overview

Acronyms:– TSS: Transportation Sensor Subsystem– RTMS: Remote Traffic Microwave Sensor – MVDS: Microwave Vehicle Detection System

TSS provides:– Speed and occupancy data down to the “lane” level– Generates “alarms” which indicate an abnormal traffic condition– Supports a variety of detector technologies, the GUI is “detector

neutral” in that the source of the data is not pertinent at the GUI

From the operator perspective, TSS is comprised of:– Detectors– Lanes– Links (a link is a collection of lanes)

Page 23: SunGuide SM Software Development Project Operator Training CDRL 5-1.3 SunGuide-TM-Oper-1.1.0

Operator Training 23

Detectors: Detailed DataDetectors: Detailed Data

Link/Lane data:– Select a lane from the graphical map and a

graph of the link (that contains the lane) will be displayed (shows one direction only):• Lane Speed:

– Current average speed (large text)– Last reported speed (smaller text)– Current alarm threshold (under graph)

• Occupancy:– Current average occupancy (large text)– Last reported occupancy (smaller text)– Current alarm threshold (under graph)

• Volume (if supported by detector):– Last reported volume

Detector status:– Allows operator to change the status of a

detector

Page 24: SunGuide SM Software Development Project Operator Training CDRL 5-1.3 SunGuide-TM-Oper-1.1.0

Operator Training 24

Detectors: Current AlarmsDetectors: Current Alarms

Alarms are generated when the speed and/or occupancy crosses the SunGuideSM Administrator established thresholds (these thresholds can vary by time of day)

Current alarms are displayed, the operator may:– Dismiss: remove from the system– Generate Incident: start the process of managing an

incident (details of incident management will be provided later)

DMS: Send MessageDMS: Send Message

Allows operator to:– Edit a message (will be formatted for the sign geometry)– Set attributes of the message– Search message library for a “saved message”

Message is sent to MAS for “processing”

Page 30: SunGuide SM Software Development Project Operator Training CDRL 5-1.3 SunGuide-TM-Oper-1.1.0

Operator Training 30

DMS: Conflict ScreenDMS: Conflict Screen

Displayed when a message being sent to DMS has a spelling conflict (a word is not the in the “approved word” list that is managed by the SunGuideSM Administrator

First operator (with override permissions) to respond will cause the conflict screen to be dropped on all workstations

Operator can alter the message and its attributes

Page 31: SunGuide SM Software Development Project Operator Training CDRL 5-1.3 SunGuide-TM-Oper-1.1.0

Operator Training 31

DMS: LibrariesDMS: Libraries

What are they: libraries “store” messages for later retrieval

Capabilities:– Manage libraries– Manage sub-libraries– Manage the messages stored

Page 32: SunGuide SM Software Development Project Operator Training CDRL 5-1.3 SunGuide-TM-Oper-1.1.0

Operator Training 32

DMS: SequencesDMS: Sequences

Capabilities:– Manage libraries of sequences– Manage sequences– Manage the sequence items stored

Page 33: SunGuide SM Software Development Project Operator Training CDRL 5-1.3 SunGuide-TM-Oper-1.1.0

Operator Training 33

DMS: GroupsDMS: Groups

Groups of DMS devices are established to facilitate putting the same message on a “group” of devices

DMS Groups are useful if you wanted to display a PSA on all the signs in a corridor

Capabilities:– Manage groups– Manage the content of the group

Page 34: SunGuide SM Software Development Project Operator Training CDRL 5-1.3 SunGuide-TM-Oper-1.1.0

Operator Training 34

MAS: OverviewMAS: Overview

MAS implements the SunGuideSM message priority algorithm

Default priorities (1 to 256 possible values):– 1: default for “manually created messages”– 2 – 255: used for message priorities in response plans

(more on this later)– 256: default for message sequences

When an operator or subsystem generates a message request (for either a DMS or HAR device), it is routed to MAS for queuing

Page 35: SunGuide SM Software Development Project Operator Training CDRL 5-1.3 SunGuide-TM-Oper-1.1.0

Operator Training 35

MAS: Overview - continuedMAS: Overview - continued

MAS will send the “top” (highest priority) message to the appropriate subsystem for processing

Queued messages are stored to the disk in the event of a subsystem restart

Southeast Florida Message RulesSoutheast Florida Message Rules

SunGuideSM implements a set of messaging rules known as the “Southeast Florida Message” rules

Basic format (varies based on sign geometry):– 1st line       What (Location)– 2nd line      Where (Problem)– 3rd line       When or Reference Location (Location)

When a response plan is generated, the recommended messages will be based on these rules

Response plans are RECOMMENDATIONS – the operator decides the final content of ALL messages

Page 55: SunGuide SM Software Development Project Operator Training CDRL 5-1.3 SunGuide-TM-Oper-1.1.0

Operator Training 55

DMS Sign Selection AlgorithmDMS Sign Selection Algorithm

Signs are selected a “configurable” distance down any roadways leading to the event

Distance varies based on “severity”:– Level 1: least severe– Level 2: moderate– Level 3: most severe

Priority of each message increases with distance from event, priority is calculated as “2 + miles the DMS is from the event location”

Note: many of the sign selection criteria are configurable and can be changed by the SunGuideSM administrator

Page 56: SunGuide SM Software Development Project Operator Training CDRL 5-1.3 SunGuide-TM-Oper-1.1.0

Operator Training 56

DMS Sign Selection Algorithm: DMS Sign Selection Algorithm: continuedcontinued

Sign “relationships” are established by the SunGuideSM Administrator; these relationships are used to determine what signs should be in a recommend response plan

Graphic shows possible signs:

Page 57: SunGuide SM Software Development Project Operator Training CDRL 5-1.3 SunGuide-TM-Oper-1.1.0

Operator Training 57

DMS Sign Selection Algorithm: DMS Sign Selection Algorithm: continuedcontinued

When an event occurs, signs along any possible routes (for the specified distance) are included in the recommended response plan

Graphic shows possible signs based on a hypothetical event:

Operator Training 58

IM Response Plans: Generating IM Response Plans: Generating Recommended PlansRecommended Plans

Response plans include recommended signs: operators have complete control

Operator may “tune” the parameters to alter the number of signs in the plan

Operator will select a response plan where final edit capability is provided

Operator can merge a (new) recommended response plan into a currently executing response plan (used as events are “managed” over time)

When this dialog is presented to “selected devices” (those in the plan) will be highlighted on the map

Operator may “Activate the Plan” – this will cause messages to go to MAS (does not guarantee the message will go to the sign – MAS displays messages based on priority)

Operator may “Terminate the Plan” – this will remove the messages from MAS (messages may or may not be on the sign)
