    The Factor Retired cont.

The Factor began 2012 with a score in the GII SanCarlos S. at Santa Anita and finished his career withback-to-back runner-up efforts in the GI Triple Bend H.

and GI Bing Crosby S. at BetfairHollywood Park June 30 and DelMar July 28, respectively.Topping the 2010 Barretts MayTwo-Year-Olds in Training Saleat $250,000, The Factor retireswith an overall record of 13-6-2-0 and earnings of $922,180.AThe Factor showed brilliantspeed and exceptional scope andquality in his three seasons onthe racetrack and Lane=s End isvery pleased to stand thisstunning horse whose pedigree

will be of great interest to breeders,@ said Will Farish. The Factor will stand with an initial stud fee of$15,000. AWe=re really doing a deal--[Fog City=s] DavidShimmon and I with Lane=s End--to have a five- to 10-year plan,@ Bolton explained on HRTV. AInstead of tryingto have a high stud fee and a lot of mares the first year,we=re trying to get really good mares and, we think, because he=s fast and he=s got that great Danzig line, that people will like him at that level.@ Bolton, who wasroomates with Bill Farish at the University of Virginia, added, AIt=s very exciting for me because Bill Farish andhis father were the ones who got me into the sport, soit=s fun for me to have a colt who=s good enough to godown there [to Lane=s End].@ Click here for The Factor=sbrisnet.com catalogue-style pedigree or brisnet.comlifetime past performances.

VETS, MEDS FOCUS OF NY TIMES STORY The New York Times has published its latestinstallment in a series of articles on the darker side ofthe horse racing industry, focusing this time on theabuse of prescription medications and the veterinariansprescribing them (click here for complete feature). AOnly veterinarians can legally prescribe medicine, yetthey often let trainers, who are paid to win races, makemedical decisions, including which drugs to use,@ thearticle reads. AThese veterinarians also have a powerfulfinancial incentive to prescribe drugs: they are bothdoctor and drugstore, and so the more drugs theyprescribe, the more money they make. Selling andadministering drugs, in fact, accounts for most of theirincome.@ One of the medications discussed is clenbuterol, abronchodilator that reportedly has steroidal qualities.California recently eliminated threshold levels forclenbuterol and recommended a 21-day withdrawalperiod for the medication. The Racing Medication andTesting Consortium (RMTC) is awaiting the results ofan ongoing study by the University of California, Davisbefore ruling on a possible clenbuterol ban. Another medication addressed in the article isoxymetazoline, an ingredient in the over-the-countercold remedy Afrin. According to the Times, over a 12-day period in 2011, Standardbreds at tracks inPennsylvania and New York were treated withoxymetazoline and that A36 of 38 horses using the drugfinished first or second, with 31 winning their races,@the article states. In December, the New York State Racing andWagering Board revealed that fines and suspensionshad been levied to 16 individuals for oxymetazolineviolations at the harness racing venues Yonkers,Monticello and Saratoga. Dr. Louis A. Grasso, who isbelieved to have treated several of the harness horsesin question, lost his license to practice at New Yorkracetracks, but is one of the few veterinarians to havebeen thusly sanctioned, the Times reports. ALosing a racing license is not a big enoughdeterrent,@ Edward J. Martin, president of theAssociation of Racing Commissioners International, toldthe Times. AWe believe losing a veterinarian=s license is.This is a hole in the regulatory scheme and needs to beplugged.@

When the gates opened for the Cotillion--the firstGrade I event in Pennsylvania racing history--bothQuesting and My Miss Aurelia came away alertly, before jockey Corey Nakatani ceded the early lead toQuesting and Irad Ortiz Jr. The Godolphin filly racedwell away from the quicksand inside paths throughdawdling splits of :25.19 and :50.04, with My MissAurelia just behind to her outside. Nakatani gave theEclipse Award winner her cue on the far turn and sheresponded immediately. The two stars went at itshoulder to shoulder, brushing several times in thestretch, but the taller My Miss Aurelia would not bedenied in the end. "We decided we'd let Questing doher thing early and save our best for later," saidNakatani. AWith such a slow pace, I had to move a littlesooner than I would have wanted. It was a horse race.@My Miss Aurelia, a professional winner of her Saratogadebut last July, went into the GI Breeders Cup JuvenileFillies as the favorite following victories in the GIIAdirondack S. and GI Frizette S. A three-length victoryin the marquee event under the Twin Spires sealed herchampionship claims, but she was sidelined with shinproblems subsequently. In her only outing thiscampaign, the bay was successful in the restrictedMandy=s Gold S. at Saratoga Aug. 8. Her yearling half-brother by Distorted Humor sold for $850,000 toShadwell during Keeneland September=s Book 1.

Godolphin=s unbeaten Certify (Elusive Quality) wasthe subject of a positive bulletin ahead of Friday=s G1 Shadwell Fillies= Mile at Newmarket, for which 11remained at the six-day stage. Trainer Mahmood AlZarooni reported the Aug. 11 G3 Sweet Solera S. andSept. 14 G2 May Hill S. winner to have pleased in herrecent work. ACertify did a nice, easy piece of work thismorning and we are hopefully aiming her towardsNewmarket,@ he said. AWe have the option of stayingclose to home or going to France for the G1 Prix MarcelBoussac the following week. The decision is basedmainly on how she came out of her run at Doncaster. She is in good form at the moment. Certify showedthat she is a good filly in the May Hill S., because shekicked off a slow pace. It=s usually not very easy to winfrom behind if there is no pace, and she still showed alittle bit of greenness. She is learning with her racing, and I hope that she will be better on her next outing. She is improving all of the time and seems to go on anyground.@ Among her opponents is likely to be Nick andOlga Dhandsa and John and Zoe Webster=s unbeatenAug. 25 G3 Prestige S. scorer Ollie Olga (StormyAtlantic) from the Mick Channon stable; Mary-AnneParker=s July 26 Listed Star S. winner Roz (GB) (Teofilo{Ire}) from Harry Dunlop=s barn; and Khalid Abdullah=sWinsili (GB) (Dansili {GB}). John Gosden yesterdaysupplemented that homebred, who was a latest secondto Godolphin=s Lovely Pass (Ire) (Raven=s Pass) in a mileconditions event at Ascot Sept. 8, at a cost of,15,000.

French Fifteen Out for the Season... Trainer Nicolas Clement has ruled French Fifteen (Fr)(Turtle Bowl {Ire}) out of the remainder of the 2012campaign. Sheikh Abdullah bin Khalifa Al Thani=s G1Criterium international winner and G1 2000 Guineasrunner-up has not been seen since beating only onehome in the G1 Prix Jean Prat at Chantilly July 1.AFrench Fifteen sustained a tiny hairline fracture to ahind leg and the vets are now very happy with him, buthe won=t run again this season,@ his conditioner told theRacing Post. AWe will try and win another Group 1 racein 2013.@

A TALE OF TWO SALES The second week of the Keeneland SeptemberYearling Sale (seven sessions in Books 3-6 fromSaturday, Sept. 15BFriday, Sept. 21) established atleast three things. Most significantly, Books 4 and 5(Monday-Tuesday-Wednesday), with a combined76.7% clearance rate from those catalogued and acombined $36,988 average for 913 horses sold, demonstrated that the contracted foal crop andre-calibrated market >third tier= can operate in a vibranttrading (if not profitable; that=s another issue) manner. In other words, between domestic and newly developedinternational markets, there is big demand for $40,000American-bred yearlings. Second, the re-calibration of the bottom tier of thecommercial yearling market in Kentucky is increasinglymoving from Keeneland=s second week toFasig-Tipton=s October Yearling Sale, scheduled thisyear for Oct. 22-24. This might have once beeninterpreted as a slur on Fasig-Tipton, but not as of lastyear, when they catalogued 1,007 yearlings, and sold710 of them (70.5% of the catalogue) for a gross of$17 million (near enough double the sale=s gross in2010), and a very respectable average of $24,010. Thisyear, Fasig=s three-day sale has 1,254 catalogued--anincrease of another 25%--many of them refugees fromKeeneland Book 6. We may have to wait another fourweeks to confirm the suspicion that the market for$25,000 yearlings is just as strong as it=s been thisweek for $40,000 yearlings at Keeneland. The third thing we learn from the Week 2 results ismore sobering, and it has to do with the comparisonwith the four-day Week 1, Books 1 and 2. Mondaynight=s Book 1 got off to a slow start with only 57% ofthe catalogue selling, but the market started toperceptibly pick up midway through Book 2=s openingTuesday session, and Wednesday and Thursday feltvery strong. Yet, in all of Book 2, 72.2% of theyearlings sent through the ring were sold. For Books1-2 combined (Week 1), the figure was 71.4%. In week2, the comparative figure was 84.7%. If you want tolook at it from the point of view of percentage soldfrom the catalogue (which in America especially takesinto account increased day-of-sale withdrawals due tolack of vets, scopes, second looks, etc.), in Books 1and 2 combined, 62.5% of the catalogues were listedas sold--five out of eight. In Week 2, the comparativefigure was 72.8%--over a 10% higher clearance ratefrom the catalogue.

This statistic can highlight only one thing: a lack ofbuyers for $200,000 yearlings--$202,829 was thecombined average for Books 1 and 2. At KeenelandSeptember 2008--literally the last sale before The Crashhit the Thoroughbred market--Books 1 and 2 grossed$206.7 million; this year, Week 1--Books 1 and 2Bgrossed $132.8 million. The Week 1 gross has declinedby 36%. The number catalogued has declined by 19%,the number sold by 22%, and the average by 18%.Yes, the Week 1 market (like the whole of theThoroughbred market) then was bloated; yes, thereneeded to be declines, world market collapse or noworld market collapse. But the recovery in Week 1--themost important sector of the North American yearlingmarket--is happening much more slowly. The market for$40,000 yearlings is stabilizing; the market for$200,000 yearlings is not. TDN Publisher Barry Weisbord made a typically astuteobservation to me a couple of months ago when wewere talking about the >flattening= of the APEX ARunner indices for the top sires: keep in mind, he said, with the big crops all these sires are running against alot more horses by other good sires, rather than a lot ofhorses by mediocre sires. Good point, and it applies to the yearling sales, too.Sure, Books 4 and 5 were super-strong, but are thesires in those books a lot stronger than they used to be,too? And this whole line of thinking also applies, evenmore so, to commercial breeders who must nowconsider what they can afford to sign up for in the wayof 2013 stud fees. Take a look at the table of 115 sireswhich had six or more yearlings sell at KeenelandSeptember, ranked by their Keeneland Septemberaverage only (click here to see averages for all 239 siresrepresented at Keeneland, alphabetically; click here togo to the Instatistics table ranking all yearling sires forall sales covered in 2012). Seven sires who arecurrently scheduled to be standing in North America in2013 had September averages between $218,000-$319,000. Can commercial breeders, as I asked lastweek, really afford to be paying $100,000 stud feeswhen the top sires, at the top sale on the continent, average between $218,000 -$319,000? It=s a toughask. Keeneland=s first week grossed $132.8 million, and itwill still be the highest-grossing sale in the NorthAmerican and European yearling market at the end of2012. But it may not be the most important.Tattersalls= October 1 Sale in Newmarket (Oct 9-11 thisyear), grossed the equivalent of $87.7 million (attoday=s rates), and averaged over $240,000, with 364sold (71.6% of 508 catalogued) in 2011. That is a 9%higher clearance rate from the catalogue thanKeeneland Week 1 achived this year. This year=sthree-day October 1 sees 577 catalogued, an increaseof 13%. With 42 yearlings by Galileo catalogued, andover 175 by consensus World Top 15 sires, that=s thesale where the big guns will unload their arsenals.

Weekly Sales Ticker by Bill Oppenheim

“Week 2, starting with Book 3 last Saturday, was a

different sale: though 19% fewer were catalogued and 14%

fewer sold than in 2011, the Week 2 gross was up by 11%,

and the average by an impressive 29%, with an amazing

72.8% clearance rate from the catalogues. Shrinking the

foal crop has worked, at least to some extent: the Week 2

average is now higher than even in 2008, from when the

number of Week 2 horses catalogued at Keeneland has

plunged by 40%.” – Bill Oppenheim

Not all the buyers of $200,000-plus yearlingsdisappeared in The Crash; some are concentrating theirattentions more on Newmarket than on Lexington, which I have no doubt will be confirmed in aboutanother 16 days. Kentucky desperately needs more ofthe kind of sire power which will attract back Europeanbuyers--that, to me, is one of the principal messages ofthis year=s Keeneland September sale, and particularlyof Week 1 results. And there=s only one way to do that:go buy them. That, and no race-day medication. Buyersof $40,000 yearlings don=t mind; some potential buyersof $200,000 yearlings clearly do.Bill Oppenheim may be contacted at [email protected](please cc TDN management [email protected]). The homebred paired up98 Beyer Speed Figures when clearing her first-levelcondition at the Spa July 21, but was a no-show aftera rough start in the GI Test S. Aug. 25, checking insixth. Backed down to favoritism here, the chestnutwas content to lag towards the back of the pack early, but began to pick off horses with ease on the hometurn in what appeared like a potentially unsustainablemove. She kept right on rolling in the lane, however, and reported home a convincing winner from HolidaySoiree. Test third-place finisher Beautiful But Blue filledout the trifecta. AShe usually doesn't break that well,@rider Javier Castellano noted. AThe last two times shehasn't really broke. This time she broke a lot betterthan normal but still not good enough to be real closegoing into the first turn. I saved enough ground on thefirst turn to be able to go wide and make the runaround the second turn. She just kept giving tonight.@Click for the brisnet.com chart or Video, sponsored byTaylor Made Sales.
