Barbara Fritchie cont. Funnys Approval got an inauspicious start to hercareer--she finished last of seven in a $15,000 maidenseller at Turfway in March--but the Bobby Rankinhomebred has now won four straight. The chestnutbroke through emphatically in career start number fivewhen trying the dirt for the first time at MountaineerOct. 5, and streaked to similarly impressive tallies backat that venue Oct. 28 and Dec. 7. Those last twoscores came in the slop, and similar conditions hereproved to the longshot=s liking. Crowded a bit out ofthe gate, Funnys Approval rushed up in between horsesto seize the lead and post splits of :23.02 and :46.46.She was confronted by favored My Wandy=s Girl at thetop of the lane, and while the former looked poised toscore when she took the lead briefly on the rail, FunnysApproval dug back in gamely to re-break and blow upthe tote. AI always knew she was good enough to makegood races,@ trainer Jose Lopez said of FunnysApproval. AShe won three races in a row and we werewaiting for races. I came last week and I ran one hereand I looked at the stakes and said >Let=s take a shot, you=ve got to be in it to win it.=... When I saw theforecast I was happy about it. I was doing the raindance. It must be nice being Gary Stevens. The Hall of Famepilot has only been out of retirement for some sixweeks, and he=s already won two graded stakes. Henursed Slim Shadey (GB) (Val Royal {Fr}) along on the

Great Hothad last found thewinner=s circle in the2011 GII Raven Run S.at Keeneland, but theveteran=s touch andthe addition of blinkersdid the trick this time. The highlight of thehomebred=s 2012

campaign was a track-and-trip second-place effortbehind Eclipse finalist Include Me Out (Include) in theGII La Canada S. last January, but she could do betterthan ninth in the GI Breeders= Cup F/M Sprint here Nov. 3. Third behind next-out winners Teddy=s Promise(Salt Lake) and Snow Fall (War Front) in the Dec. 29Kalookan Queen S., she was stretched back out tofinish fourth here behind Snow Fall in the Jan. 13Pasaena H. Allowed her head by Stevens to establish commandafter breaking from the rail, Great Hot settled nicely intorhythm as she faced little resistance through splits of:23.94, :48.19 and 1:12.11. Favored GI La Brea S.winner Book Review tipped out to confront thepacesetter entering the straight, but Stevens exudedconfidence, and never bothered going to the whip ashis mount bounded to victory. AIt was so sweet,@ Stevens said of his trip. AI movedher out about threewide and she just shutit down and waslistening to mycommands all the wayaround. I was just beinga passenger until thehead of the stretch.@ Ofhis hot hand in recentweeks, the 49-year-oldsaid, AIt feels good. I=vehad that feeling before.I guess that=s why Icame back, I had that feeling, and I wanted it again.@ Winning conditioner A.C. Avila, who said he willpoint Great Hot to the nine-furlong GI Santa MargaritaS. here Mar. 16, was quick to praise Stevens. AGary got the breaks,@ he said. ANobody wins 5,000 races for no reason. I put the blinkers on to giveher more focus. He spoke to me yesterday, I said, >I=mgoing to do one thing. FUTURE BRIGHT FOR VADASHAN, CLUBS Unbeaten Vadashan (Aus) (Redoute=s Choice {Aus}),who stamped himself as a solid prospect for Classic

distances with a smooth winat Warwick Farm lastSaturday (click here for TDNfeature), will carry new colorsin his next start. Bred by HHThe Aga Khan and ArrowfieldStud, the A$440,000 InglisEaster yearling purchase hadbeen campaigned by the

partnership of Arrowfield, Saeed Naser Al Romaithi andRenata Coleman to date, and those names will bejoined by Young Professionals in Racing (YPR). Thelatter group was recently established to encourageyounger racing enthusiasts. AThis is a fantastic opportunity for young people onthe fringe of racing who may be considering racehorseownership in the future,@ said Kathryn Thomson, YPR=sfounding chair. AYPR=s involvement with Vadashanprovides a social and educational alternative to thesometimes daunting responsibilities associated withracehorse ownership, yet enables members toexperience all the excitement of racing a horse they feelconnected to. AWe are truly grateful to Arrowfield and their partnersin Vadashan for their support of this initiative, and look

forward to workingtogether to achieve astrong future for theThoroughbred industry, through increasingawareness andparticipation in racing,@Thomson added. AIt=s alsovery fitting that Vadashanis by Redoute=s Choice, given that YPR hasrecently joined forceswith the Redoute=sChoice Club.@ YPR is social racinginitiative; its members donot pay costs and will notreceive prizemoneyearned by Vadashan.Ballots will also be held toselect a group ofmembers who will enjoyownership privileges ondays when he is racing. In addition to racedayaffairs, the initiave also

provides opportunities for various industry experiences, including attending bloodstock auctions and trackwork,as well as stud tours and fashion events.

YPR is now lined with the Redoute=s Choice Club, which came into being just over a year ago in an effortto develop future industry participants. Spearheading theRedoute=s Choice Club are Vicky Leonard, Arrowfield=smarketing manager; Bruce Slade, racing manager forleading trainer Gai Waterhouse; and Gus Roland, theracing producer for SKY television. AWe decided to throw open the door to the backstageof racing to the younger generation in Sydney by offeringthem access to the world of racing,@ Leonard explained.AWe capped membership at a manageable level of 100,which was reached within a few weeks, highlighting thatthere was strong interest out there. There is a simplecriteria for membership: must be between 25 and 35, bebased in Sydney, and have a strong interest in horseracing, but not already be employed in the industry.@ Redoute=s Choice Club members have attendedtrackwork at Randwick with Waterhouse, John O=Shea,Graeme Begg and John Thompson. Other events includeda breakfast at the Inglis Easter Yearling Sale with guestspeakers explaining the auction process, and racedayevents with owners, form analysts and bloodstockagents recounting their industry experiences andinvolvement. Though the primary aim of the group is to educatefuture participants in the industry, it has already inspiredmembers. AWe had many groups so keen to get involved thatthey have taken shares in horses with Gai Waterhouse,Graeme Begg, Paul Messara and a couple of the majorsyndicators,@ Leonard said. ABruce, Gus and I have madeourselves constantly available for any information thatthe members requiring, helping to introduce members torelevant people in the part of the industry they are mostinterested in.@ The fact that YPR was created with a focus on thesocial aspects of racing dovetailed with the Redoute=sChoice Club mission. AMany of our core values are similar and had the maingoal of helping to drive the new generation of horseowners in New South Wales,@ Leonard noted. AThe RCCwould continue to have a strong education componentrunning the industry specific events, while YPR will drivethe social and networking events.@ For more information on YPR, visit www.ypr.com.au.Further details on RCC can be viewed atredouteschoiceclub.com.au.
