JOCKEYS’ GUILD, CDI REACH AGREEMENT A dispute between the Jockeys= Guild and ChurchillDowns Incorporated (CDI) has been settled after thetwo groups reached a multi-year agreement that callsfor CDI to make payments to the Jockeys' Guild tosubsidize health insurance, life insurance and disabilitybenefits for members of the Guild who ride in the U.S.Terms of the agreement were not disclosed. "Wesincerely appreciate the commitment made by CDI tosupport the benefits that impact our jockeys," saidTerry Meyocks, national manager of the Jockeys' Guild.AThis agreement will directly benefit approximately 950active, retired and permanently disabled members. It iscritical that we receive support from all of our racetrackpartners within the industry.@ Last summer, CDIannounced that it would no longer make financialcontributions to the Guild. Under the previousagreement that expired Dec. 31, the four CDI tracks--Churchill Downs, Fair Grounds, Arlington Park andCalder--paid about $330,000 to the Guild through per-mount and per-race fees. In return, the tracks got touse images of the jockeys to promote themselves andthe sport.

A petition signed by 240 jockeys was submitted tothe CDI board of directors in mid-November in thehopes of urging the board to reconsider its stance, andat least two states--Illinois and California--had delayeddecisions on the renewal of the advance-deposit-wagering operation Twinspires.com, which is owned byCDI. Currently, the Guild provides life insurance, AD&Dinsurance and temporary disability benefits to its activemembers, as well as life insurance and aid topermanently disabled members.

Canadian Up-And-Comer Maritimer Sold Privately Maritimer (Stormy Atlantic--Highland Mood, byHighland Ruckus), one of Canada=s top juveniles lastyear and a likely finalist for a Sovereign Award as

champion 2-year-old colt, has been sold byowner/breeder HowardWalton. Walton, who racesunder the bannerNorseman Racing Stable, confirmed yesterday thatthe multiple-stakes-winning colt had beensold privately, but

disputed a story in the Toronto Star that said Maritimerhad been sold to controversial Chechen leader RamzanKadyrov. Walton said the horse had been sold in a dealbrokered by two bloodstock agents, but that he isn=taware of who the purchaser AI don=t know where that information came from,@ hesaid, referring to the Star story. AThere were twoagents that dealt primarily with my lawyer, and that=sabout all I know.@ Walton declined to disclose the price, but said, AIt was good for them, and it was good for us.@ Walton, who operates the Toronto-based NorsemanPlastics, co-bred and raced Maritimer=s dam HighlandMood, who was undefeated in four career starts. Herwins included the 2001 editions of the Ontario DamselS. and Passing Mood S. Trained by Sid Attard,Maritimer, her fourth foal, won sprinting six panels ondebut at Woodbine in July. He then ran second in thesix-furlong Vandal S. three weeks later, defeated a headby another Norseman homebred in Buongiorno Johnny(Mr. Greeley). Maritimer hit his best stride in the fallwhen stretched to two turns on the main track, winning the Coronation Futurity S. by 2 1/4 lengthsNov. 6 (video) and the Display S. by 5 1/2 lengths Nov. 27 (video). AHis speed figures spoke for themselves, which iswhy we had a lot of the big people calling,@ saidWalton, who declined to disclose the purchase price, but said, AIt was good for them and good for us.@Walton has campaigned, among others, MGSWSignature Red (Bernstein). The 35-year-old Kadyrov is a former Chechen rebelwho became president of Chechnya in 2007. An avidhorse racing fan, he has competed internationally, andin 2009 was represented by G1 Melbourne Cup thirdMourilyan (Ire) (Desert Prince {Ire}). Last year, heprivately purchased the GIII Holy Bull S. runner-upSweet Ducky (Pulpit) and sent him to Dubai for the G2 UAE Derby. The colt went unplaced and, returnedto the States and, sent to Seth Benzel=s barn, wentunplaced again in a Woodbine allowance race in lateOctober. The Toronto Star said that Benzel would alsotrain Maritimer, but the TDN couldn=t confirm as of lastnight. -LM

It could be an exaggeration to describe Don=t TrickHer as an ugly duckling, but there can be no denyingthat she has now developed into a magnificent swan.Include Me Out is her third stakes winner by an Airdriestallion, following Don=t Trick Me=s speedy CanadianFrontier filly On The Menu and her excellent StorminFever filly Check The Label, who numbered the GI Garden City Breeders= Cup S. among her four gradedvictories on turf. The mare=s younger progeny are Look Busy, a brotherto Include Me Out who sold for $340,000 as a yearling;the 2-year-old Divine Park filly Wooden Nickel who soldfor $180,000 as a weanling and $220,000 as ayearling; and a 2011 filly by Divine Park. Don=t TrickHer was sent to an outside stallion for the first time inher eight-year broodmare career when she visitedMalibu Moon in 2011. I described Don=t Trick Her as an ugly ducklingbecause she is an unraced daughter of an unraced mareand was covered for the first time as a 3-year-old in2004. Neither her sire Mazel Trick nor her broodmaresire Northjet ranked among Airdrie=s numerous successstories. By 2006 her sire Mazel Trick had been movedfrom Airdrie to Pennsylvania, where he lasted only oneseason before moving on to British Columbia in Canada. The future had looked much rosier in the early yearsof Mazel Trick=s stallion career. He had earned his placeat stud with his performances in California, after hisreturn from France. He won all four of his starts on dirtand on one occasion dipped under 1:20.00 for sevenfurlongs, when he set a new track record in the GII Triple Bend H. Mazel Trick also collected a pair ofGrade IIIs over a mile and a sixteenth. There had been quite a buzz about Mazel Trick whenhis first foals reached the sales. Sired at a fee of$15,000, they averaged more than $75,000 asweanlings and nearly $80,000 as yearlings, when theyachieved such prices as $535,000, $290,000 and$255,000. Unfortunately, such optimism proved to bemisplaced and Mazel Trick=s career yielded only onegraded stakes winner (the sprinter Major Success)--hence his departure from Kentucky. However, anotherof his daughters, Mazel Tov, produced that smart turffilly Summer Soiree.

Include Me Out=s second dam Lucy Sims also ranksas the second dam of the previously mentioned SilverMedallion, winner of the GIII Ft. Lauderdale S. on turf acouple of weeks ago. Silver Medallion=s dam AnotherVegetarian failed to win in four starts, but she too hasserved Airdrie very well. She is also the dam of SweetTalker, a Stormin Fever filly who became a Grade Iwinner in the Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup. Include Me Out=s third dam Join The Waves won onlyone of her 24 starts, but there is another successfulfamily descending from her, via her Gallant Man fillyPorthole. Porthole produced the Grade I-placedPersonable Lady, who in turn produced the GI LasVirgenes S. winner Likeable Style. Likeable Style nowranks as the second dam of last year=s leading freshmansire Scat Daddy. Having said that Don=t Trick Her didn=t look hugelypromising at the start of her broodmare career, how doI explain her success? Perhaps it has something to dowith the fact that her pedigree is free of many of themajor influences, her only inbreeding in five generationsbeing 5x5 to Nearctic and 5x5 to Big Game. Big Gamewon the 2,000 Guineas and appears in Don=t TrickHer=s pedigree through his talented daughters Queenpot(winner of the 1,000 Guineas) and Safari Moon (seconddam of the Irish 1,000 Guineas winner Even Star). I could also add that Don=t Trick Her=s female linetraces all the way back to the famous mare Marchetta. She belongs to the Rosetta branch, which has providedEuropean racing with numerous classic winners. The sire=s side of Include Me Out=s pedigree wascovered fairly comprehensively when I assessed thepedigree of Her Smile last July. As I pointed out on thatoccasion, Include=s career represents a perfect exampleof the peaks and troughs that affect so many of today=sstallions. His first crop, which featured the Grade Iwinners Cash Included and Panty Raid and thosetalented fillies Runway Rosie and She=s Included, helpedrestore demand for Include=s services in 2007.Consequently, he had only his second three-figure cropin 2008, and it=s deja vu all over again. This time the125 members of this crop include the GI Prioress S.winner Her Smile, the Grade II winners St John=s Riverand Include Me Out and the Grade III winner Redeemed. Unfortunately, Include attracted fewer mares over thenext few years, the end result being 60 live foals in2009, 29 in 2010 and 20 in 2011. As he covered 55mares in 2011, let=s hope the tide has turned onceagain.
